    When you start down a path in your talking and then your background music starts or you have a little disclaimer on the screen (story time....) etc... I just find myself giggling. So kudos to you. You continue to entertain me, educate me, and make me feel like I've spent time with a good friend. I just adore your channel and exactly the way you choose to present your makes to us. Thank you so very much for all of it.

    Laughed OUT LOUD when you held up the Frankenbag with the two cakes of yarn in it!!! Also, loving the sock colors you're working with!

    Historically, cuff down socks were preferred because a new sole could be knit by simply unraveling from the toe up.

    I got so excited when you started talking about tea tins. My wife gets mad when I keep them and she heard from the other room when I was watching this. So help me out and do a mid-week ramble feature about all the ways you used your tea tins, please!

    I love the bag even if you don’t use it for anything functional it would still look grand in your office as a reminder of your sweet grandmother. I would love to try sock knitting but I think I should do one at a time first 🤣😂. I also love tea tubs and tea pots - anything related to tea 🍵

    I have tried two at a time socks magic loop. I really don’t enjoy the yarn management.
    I have tried two at a time socks consecutively (two separate needles but do cuff on one then cuff on second, leg on one, leg on second, etc.) I didn’t love it.
    I’m an old fashioned one sock at a time knitter. But I really don’t struggle with second sock syndrome. I just love the compactness of a one at a time sock project.
    But to be truthful, summer heat has caused me to lose my sock mojo because I don’t wear socks in the summer. 😅

      I'm with you on this! I find it very satisfying to hit the halfway mark with that first sock, if anything it motivates me to go knit the second one so I can wear the complete pair.

    I love how your grandma’s bag turned out! And back to a previous comment I made about attending Rhinebeck when the boys are older……there is so much history you guys would enjoy in upstate NY. A few suggestions, the Woodstock museum is fantastic and very interactive, Saratoga Springs is a fun town where the battle of Saratoga took place and West Point is right on the Hudson’s river with tours available. Plus Lake Placid is so fun. You can see where the USA guys beat the Russians and ultimately won the gold in ice hockey.
    Have a good week 😄👍🧶

    I definitely recommend the Shadow Wrap Heel! Once I learned it there was no turning back. I love that I can do both heels at the same time when doing TAAT socks and the magic of NO HOLES is the icing on the cake. This was such a fun podcast….the “balls in the bag!”-a total hoot. Thanks Tayler.

    I love your podcasts. I feel like I'm chatting with a friend. I never miss an episode. Love your bag and it's history. I've made a few bags and I line them with a non-stretchy fabric so they hold their shape. One small little comment (I am a technical writer and editor so I tend to be picky)--casted is not the correct past tense of cast. Cast is an irregular verb and the past tense is just cast.

    • @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Robin! And yes. You’re absolutely right regarding the tense of cast. I too am aware of this, however I think now it’s used this way as more of a colloquialism than a proper use of tense. It’s like ‘knitted’. It’s acceptable (more so than casted) but it’s not ideal. So in my defense, I’m using “casted” here as a knitting colloquialism that I’m sure you’ll hear often now now that I’ve brought it to your attention. 😉

    • @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m coming back to report that I am doing a survey over on Instagram (because I’m a curious nerd) to see just how common “casted on” really is before I deem it a colloquialism. I’ll report back with my findings. I may just be among a minority who happen to be using this verb incorrectly. 😬🤓

    The Titanic exhibition is so interesting. My great-great-grandfather was one of the crew of the Titanic. He survived and he tried to help others. He spent most of his life on the sea, too old to enlist in WW1 he was instead one of the merchant sailors who contributed to the war effort. He sadly got shot in the leg, came home and took up a gardening job and he got good enough that he became the head gardener. Then as his leg got worse over time the docs wanted to amputate. But he needed to support his family so he refused. Over time it got worse until eventually he died from an infection.
    His daughter (my great grandmother) then carried on in his footsteps and became an amazing gardener. Her garden featured on gardeners world here in the UK. She lived into her 90s and always said "the secret to a long life is to stay active, as soon as you stop doing anything you've had it."
    She was a wonderful lady and the world sure is poorer without her 💔

    Thank you so much for featuring the budget friendly yarns sometimes. A lot of us cannot afford high end yarns. It makes me happy that you use both kinds, I use Lion brand quite a bit and I get my 100 0/0 wool from Maritime Family Fibers. They feature Briggs and Little yarn . It is $7:50 for a skein of worsted. 215 yards

    Hi Tayler. Another fun filled episode! My apartment is in a 200 year old former textile mill (Amoskeag Manufacturing) which basically built the city of Manchester NH to support their industry. The Millyard Museum is next door and has many of the actual items (including a loom) used in these buildings. I sometimes sit in my space and imagine what it was like to have hundreds of those machines running constantly. Have a great week. ~ Mary Beth / MommaBethKnits

    I love the knitting tote. I used to collect old knitting bags like your grandmas. Each one was so different, mostly were the old fabric barkcloth, tapistry fabric. Some even had the knitting needles and notions inside. Mostly I would find them in yard and estate sales as nobody thought them interesting, too old fashioned. I used one as a purse for a long time. And always have some project inside of them. They are easy to store, I put hooks up in a spare bedroom closet and I can get at least 2 of the totes hanging off of one hook. Love them and love how you recycled and renewed them into something useful for you. I am a grandma, so I am very proud of what you have done to keep your loved one's memory alive. Thank you for sharing.

    I'm in such a bag knitting mood at the moment, I don't even need bags. I have found that lining them makes all the difference, both for reducing stretch and meaning that you never have to weave in yarn ends ;)
    A nice cotton lining can also be a good base for adding a million pockets to the inside if you want, and I like how I can use it to hide a zip tape

    I also like buying tea tins as momentoes. I'm a knitter, can't crochet. My mom crochets, so when ever I see a crochet project I like, I buy the yarn and ask mom to make it for me. The first time you showed the Sundance throw I wanted it! Got beautiful long dyed yarn cakes in bright rainbow colours and mom made it for me. I love it! She says it was an easy make.

I keep thinking "What happened to that "blank" that Tayler was knitting?" I feel better now! If you are ever headed San Diego way the USS Midway would probably be so fun for your boys. What a fun post! Our family did a Titanic walk-through exhibit where we "became" actual patrons of teh RMS Titanic and we had to wait until the end to see if we survived. Fun stuff while visiting family in Michigan. I love tea in all it's forms--well, not so much savory teas (lookin' at you, Lapsang Souchong!), but nearly any other tea. Your grandma would be so proud of you! That generation was of the "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without" mentality. She'd be proud of your upcycling. I finally cast on my granddaughter's Christmas stocking, now that you cranked up my knitting mojo with the Knitting Badge Neckerchief. Thanks for sharing!

    • @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jennifer! Thank you for watching. So it sounds like your Titanic walkthrough was just like our in that we also were passengers. Turns out my youngest and I survived, however my husband and my oldest son went down with the ship. 😬 It was interesting to read the real stories of these people.
      Now I've never heard of Lapsang Souchong. Sounds interesting. I've never tried a savory tea before!
      And thank you for what you say about the tote I made with my grandma's handles. I hope she likes it looking down and what you say is true. That time was so different and disposable things just weren't feasible in many cases. Perhaps I'm not only honoring my grandma, but also tipping my hat at the era when she purchased and was using the bag most. ❤️

Coincidence: I just learned how to do the shadow wrap heel from watching Denise's tutorials (Earthtones Girl: love her podcast) and did heels on my TAAT socks just yesterday. They turned out great. I might suggest that you line the inside of the bag with a cotton fabric and it won’t stretch out so much when you put items in the bag. That golden haze from a forest fire can be very eerie, sadly we have a fire not that far away from us at the moment as well. For me, I'm thankful for air conditioning as the smoke can get to the point that I can't have windows open with out getting headaches.
    I know you enjoy reading Taylor, I found a book called "The Girl Who Came Home" by Hazel Gaynor. It's about a young woman from Ireland that sailed steerage on the RMS Titanic that survived and her journey back to her village in Ireland in her later years with her great-granddaughter. The story was inspired by true evens, poignantly blends fact and fiction to explore the impact the Titanic tragedy has on survivors and their descendants. Have a wonderful week

Trying to manage the tangle-untangle, twist-untwist while knitting two at a time socks it can be a way for training one's patience. First of all, always enjoy your videos. Been some great inspiration for me and love the vibe. I don't know if I've commented this on another video but I used to only knit, I only ever knitted blankets though and some failed colorwork blankets. Eventually i gave crochet a try, and now i crochet every thing. Its funny that you mentioned that you feel like you cant do as much with crocheting because i feel the opposite I feel like I can make anything with crochet lol. I've been knitting longer then crocheting but I experiment more with crocheting then knitting which is why I can make anything I want with crocheting, sweaters, plushies, blankets and colorwork. Knitting always seemed a little too complicated to be trying new things and experimenting. But I've been watching your videos for a couple months and its really got me back into knitting. I finished my first knitted sweater 2 months ago, and just started a month ago making a fisherman sweater for the first time. which is super complicated but has been fun to make while listening to your podcasts. I cant wait to make socks next. Never knitted socks before.

    It's sad that there's a brush fire, but I totally get it! California experiences wildfires frequently enough, but the orange, smoky haze is always bleh! Do NOT go outside, as much as possible, as long as that haze lingers, for your lungs.
    There's a really good Titanic museum in Branson, Missouri, that I visited. There was this beautiful, topaz heart-shaped bracelet, and this bowl you could stick your hand in, to feel how cold the water was that night. I also enjoyed seeing the kitchen items, including the kosher items.
    FYI: Tea leaves (from the tea plant, not herbal) become bitter if the water is too hot, when the leaves are exposed to it, therefore scalding the leaves. Some tea boxes, and tins, have temperature indicators, for how hot the water should be. The more delicate/young the leaves were when picked, the lower the temperature needs to be (silver, white, and green, versus darjeeling and black/red). Me, I watch the steam, to know when to put the leaves in. If the water is whistling hot, it's WAY TOO HOT! Wait until the steam can't decide if it wants to go up or sideways, when it's fwoofy, lazy-hazy, curling around itself, and not a steady stream. When tea is brewed incorrectly, it gets bitter. There's a number of ways to fix it, if this happens. A couple of ways include adding milk, to mask the bitterness, or, I've found, if you have a very fine black pepper (so fine it's a soft brown), put enough in your cup to drag the thicker, bitter substance to the bottom. Or, just wait for the water to cool, before mixing it with the leaves. EVERY time I get tea at a coffee place, I insist they add ice to the cup, before adding the hot water, and that they let me put the tea bags in myself. Even specialized tea places can get it wrong, but coffee places ALWAYS get it wrong, because the water from the machine is TOO HOT for tea leaves, but I'm positive it is just the right heat for burned berry pits, masquerading as so-called beans.
    Speaking of crochet, I finished my first two crochet projects; the first: six strands of 100 chains to make a plant pot hanging do-dah (from a pattern in a 90's pattern book, using colorful bread clips, instead of beads), the second: what I call a crochet sampler scarf (roughly six foot rows of single, double, treble, double, single, star [I got ambitious], single, double, treble, double, single; I may or may not add some kind of border). The yarn on the scarf was absolutely awful to work with, but I got in some good practice on learning the stitches!
    Glad you finished your new/old bag!

    The bag turned out great! Maybe not putting grapefruit sized balls of anything in it though, lol (oh my!)
    Looking forward to seeing the blanket finished and still having a hard time wrapping my head around using such small diameter needles (the sock needles) A different kind of Oh my!
    So, Titanic... Tasting History With Max did like 5 episodes on the different tiers of menus on the Titanic, which I thought was pretty interesting. (stuff you watch/listen to while knitting)

    I think it looks fine. Have you watched Stephen West way to weave ends as you go? I think it would have worked great with this project and any color change project.

    If you are ever in the Kansas City area, visit the Steamboat Arabia Museum. It’s downtown in the City Market, which is a fun experience in itself, with lots of good restaurants, but the Arabia is fascinating. The steamship was loaded with tons (literally) of goods for the pioneers heading west. It sank in a storm and was left there, with the mighty (and very muddy) Missouri River slowly burying it mud. The detective story of how it was found again almost 150 years later is so interesting but the main attraction is the incredible amount of items that were recovered intact because the mud preserved it all. There’s also a glassed in area where you can watch them continuing to restore more items. I highly recommend going for anyone interested in history!

      Oh, this sounds fascinating! It's really interesting to see sites and artifacts that have been submerged. That preservation is surreal. We have an interest in visiting Kansas City and I will definitely keep this in mind. Thank you! ❤️

    @tayler - grandma's bag. block the purse to extend to the width of handles and put a stay-stitch to tighten at each end. I also think a woven lining would do wonders to keep it's shape and give the purse some longevity. Very nice!!

    Have you given any thought to lining the bag. A knit bag can streach.

    I wonder if you could do a reinforcement type crochet stitch on the bag to make it both wider and well, reinforce so it doesn't stretch like knit is known to do.

    When I make two-at-a-time socks I wind the balls without cutting the yarn (wind all of it, then wind half from the outside for the second ball). I use a scale to get a rough guess of half - but because you aren't cutting it doesn't matter. Then when you are about to finish the socks you don't have to worry about one ball having a few yards more than the other. Yes - I prefer toe-up so I use every inch of yarn. But having different colored toes on your socks is not the end of the world. (There is a lovely pair of orange socks on my Ravelry page with black toes.)

    Like others suggested, I would love to see the bag lined with some cotton fabric. Then you could tie your ends and hide the snipped tails. I also wonder if you could add magnetic circles to the inner face of the handles! That way you could pick it up easily and comfortably. See, now we're all experts in the restoration of grandma's bag 😝

    We have a great exhibit of Titanic artifacts here in Halifax NS at The Maritime Museum. I've lived in this city for over 30 years now and I have never been, which is ridiculous. So for our staycation this week, we've added that to the To Do list.

    Your boys are adorable. What a great picture of the four of you enjoying the Titanic artifacts. I fear the bag you knitted for Grandma's handles will stretch out of shape if you carry things in it. An alternative is might be to display it next to the original fabric.

    You didn't have to explain the tea, but I do appreciate it! ;) I need to *let go* a bit about timing mine....sigh. Your socks remind me of two sweaters I have on hold right now, each stranded with a silk mohair. The wool and mohair twisting up is driving me insane. I'm thinking about putting the yarn on a lazy Susan on the floor and just spinning that to untwist...I've tried holding up the project to unspin, a strand "ring" on my finger to keep the twist to a min. It's a huge problem. The socks look a LOT more approachable, tbh, hahaha!

    Oh truboo loves to grow widthwise for me, so I'm sure it will fill out that handle space 😂 (as long as the cotton doesn't change how it grows too much haha)
