Yeah it's just great to see, how the pedals sound through the mix. That Pedal show really helped me to shape my tone. And with those bandjams there are just many more ideas to try:)
Guys, apart from how incredibly useful these jams are for “in the mix” sounds, they are also my favorite for the killer playing!! I love the noodles, love the noodles, but whilst in a band context it is immediately clear you have both spent a lot of time on stage playing in bands. As someone who has not done that, yet, it’s wonderful to see how relaxed you are, how happy, paying attention to the other musicians, the tones and licks. Crafting a solo. Just when I thought TPS couldn’t possibly be better, you go an add an entirely new world. Thank you again for all the hard work, for being FREE, my goodness, and continuing to challenge yourselves. @@michaelmichael7043 Same for me, but they both sound good. Based on the solo testing (without the band) I thought the SD-1 might cut through the mix more, but that wasn't the case to my ears. The winning solution for me might be to have multiple overdrives each set with a rather small amount of gain, and cascade them together when you need a bit more.
The hardest part is getting up there the first time. After that, it gets a lot easier. And remember, you're there to have fun. The more fun you have, the more fun your audience has!
Full band format is absolutely killer; hugely informative show has now become groovy as hell. Not to draw any comparison, but the jam format was why I used to always (and still) watch JHS, for Josh's awesome creative skills, and now getting to see you guys bring your musical creativity to the show in these larger arrangements actually inspires you to go and pick up your guitar first, and think about buying pedals later
Well, for me it is clear why I got ts9, sd1 and bd2... They sound great. They are classics. If you can you must get these pedals... Tone is something amazing and contextual... There are days I like the clarity and transparency of the TS9, that mid boost... somedays I would go for SD1 (They are quite simliar and different). BD2 sounds completely different to my ears. But These are great pedals... If I had to choose one of them I would be in double trouble... But I would go for TS9 cause I love SRV and his sound.
I'll just chime in with everyone else and say that these band context vids are an excellent addition to the TPS catalog. You guys are creating and evolving one of the best, if not the best, Internet resources for us pedal tone chasers. Happy Friday!
I have been watching your show for years and I have never decided to subscribe nor have I written any comment anywhere on TH-cam. But today, finally, I decided to do both. The only reason is that you went to a higher level and finally showed us what a guitar pedal means in the context of basic instruments in one band with multiple different guitars. This format puts you in a difficult position because all future shows must not be less than this. Your opinion, knowledge and patience in making each clip is invaluable to many who need to make decisions and, believe it or not, spend the money we have less and less today. These 36 minutes should be a global introduction to the world of basic overdrive pedals and basic guitar types in the context of the band. Not only that, the type of music you performed is, for me, exactly one in which any differences can be heard and I think you hit it 100 percent. I wish you all the best. I've used both. Get a Bluesdriver...or at least compare in store. You'll be surprised with the Bluesdriver. The name doesnt fit that pedal. It's not just for blues. Works great for 80s rock and metal tones

In the band jam, the SD-1 with the Tele was no doubt my favorite combination. As for the Strat I think I liked it more the few times Mick engaged the BD-2.

The SD-1 wins this one, surprisingly! It retains some natural harmonics in the highs, and as someone already mentioned, doesn't roll off the highs as much as the TS-9. What you''re getting then is the sweet chime + the overdrive. More clarity and more bite. Definitely better in a band context. The TS-9 is just a tiny bit muffled. If they weren't side by side most people wouldn't be able to notice, though.
Surprisingly feel I could use either and me being a TS guy for a long time My TS was modded by Analogman and has lasted 35 years or more and still counting
As others have said, this “band context” format is just so so so great. You can keep going down the rabbit hole of possibilities, but I’d just like to say that the differences between OD pedals in a band context also depends on whether there’s a second guitarist and what their tone is like. I know. I know. The band possibilities are endless (keys, distorted bass, etc) but a two guitarist rock band is very common and has a major impact on partnered rhythm tones and certainly solo tones to stand out. 😁
We’ll get there Richard. It’s my belief - Mick here - that’s it’s far less about the tone and far more about what you’re both actually playing. Hopefully we’ll get there in due course. Cheers!
Great video as always and love to see the SD-1 getting some love. Although I have to say, Can’t believe you had an SD-1 and a BD-2 on the board and didn’t stack them! One of my all time favourite combos
I love this. That Pedal Show is pulling us from the bedrooms and preparing us for gigs. All with reasonable gig levels, attainable amps, pedals that we can all afford, and showing us how to use it. 2022 is gonna be the best year ever
Would love to see an episode like this about fuzz. Alot of people find it hard to get fuzz to cut through a mix in a live band situation. They love it jamming alone but in a band setting it just gets lost. Cheers.

I picked up a SD 1 Second hand on a whim, having never heard one before. I love the damn thing. I'm glad to hear it keeping up with the other pedals. They all sound great to my ears.
SD-1 boosting my Recto has been my go-to sound for the last decade on the road! That gnarly top end makes the Mesa come alive! Thanks for making this boys!

I appreciate that you guys are using pedals that most of us have owned or at least tried. While I love all the boutique stuff I dig the real world stuff too once and a while. Both pedals have their place for sure. I prefer the SD1 with humbuckers and the TS with singlecoils.
The SD-1 has been in my rig for like 20 years. For me, there's no other overdrive pedal. I like it for the reason stated at the beginning: it's more aggressive. The TS-9 sounds a little muddy and I prefer a crisp, bright sound. Nice to get a good listen between the two. Would have been nice to hear some chords with the Blues Driver. That was my second choice for an overdrive pedal and I suspect it sounds very much like the TS-9.
Blues Driver sounds nothing like a TS-9, it's based on Marshall Bluesbreaker and has way more bass and crispy highs like a cranked amp, where a Tube Screamer cuts low end and top end and pushes mids. Also the Tube Screamers (and SD-1) mix in a bit of the clean signal, the Blues Driver does not.
@@everope ya the Blues Driver with the gain set up to a certain point will give you almost Jimi Hendrix vibes, although if im not mistaken Jimi just played straight through a cranked Marshall amp, the Tube Screamer definitely has more of a rock tone, but if you pair it on certain amps you can get some pretty high gain. alot of metal bands used the tube screamer for 80% of metal that came out late 70's, early 80's. the Blues Driver is a like clean boost, when you turn up the gain it gives you a crunchy bluesy sound. you gotta be careful what you pair with it, because it won't take certain pedals as well as the Boss Overdrive and Tube screamer. i noticed where they had it on there pedal board.
@@Jeymez Metal bands use a Tubescreamer as a clean boost with the level maxed and the gain below 25%. Thus pushing the tubes into high-er gain while tightening up any flubbyness. The BD-2 goes from clean boost to a raunchy, fuzzy distortion, with a much flatter EQ. Much more gain on tap with the Blues Driver. Both can be heavy rock machines depending on the amp/pickups.
I also liked the stack. I was using the tube screamer almost always in front, one day a friend came to my house a drummer by the way, and we played, i was playing guitar and he played with the pedals. I have three overdrives/ distortions, a ts9 style by behringer, a rats by foxgear and a bass big muff. He puts the ''ts'' after the others and i instantly loved it. The filter and compression of the circuit colours the sound,it takes a bit the hair and bite of the other drives out, and boosts a bit the amp. Changing the parameters can sound like changing the whole amp to an other one. Stack it and try settings out of the norm, a non guitarist experimenting took my sound to unknown places that i was avoiding without thinking about it by following the ''norm''
Had an SD1 as my 3rd ever pedal purchase, been on every pedalboard I've ever used, only recently appreciated the tube screamer! for me Strat = ts9 Humbuckers = SD1 (and Dan's tele in this case ) the answer of course is both !
I like the shows that feature the classic pedals that we all have like the SD1 and TS, showing how they are used and set up. And nice to see them with the modern classics like the DD-200. Another great show.

This video really points out the subtle differences in these pedals. I already have the SD-1. But now I'm thinking I need both for what they do separately, and to get that SD-1 into the TS9. LOVED that tone. I would love to see more live band jamming. It gives a very real world perspective on the pedals, and I just love to hear you two play.

Free-form creativity, this is how new ground is broken and glorious sounds emerge. I’m probably not alone is saying that I could listen to this for hours.
In the mix is absolutely the best even though I only play by myself. I find the interaction very cool. What I've gotten from this particular video is that I prefer the SD-1, but stacked was awesome. Guys, I know its more difficult to do the band format, but please keep going with it. I especially enjoy watching how all of you (yes Dougie too) meld at certain times. Coming from a drummer background, I do remember what it was like when things just started taking on a certain feel.
I've seen a lot of That Pedal Show episodes. None have been more informative and useful than this one. I especially appreciated Mick's systematic play a lick, switch, play the same lick again, switch approach. Well done by all.

Thank you for these band mix episodes and for starting to concentrate on more common stuff. The episodes on top shelf $300+ pedals are necessary as well but so are these $50-$100 pedal episodes! And the context pedals here are spot on. We've needed this episode for 5 years! 😁
The only problem I see with these comparing pedal videos, is that once Mick has a strat in his hand you are too mesmerised with his playing to spot any variables in tone. Awesome playing as usual guys

@@stephsheehy3576 Using as a boost in front of a more scooped overdrive amp channel has helped. Also, staying away from a very midrangey guitar like a LP, and using more single coils. Currently, I'm using a Boss Katana Artist MkII, and I have tweaked the EQ settings on each patch to compensate. I still can't use the SD-1 in all possible situations; but when it works, I love the sound.
@@MrvlZmb Totally. I just bought an SD1 for my Strat into 65PRRI (scooped mids), and it sounds great. Ive been setting my SD1 tone at about 10 o clock, and drive at about 12 for Rock. But then i pulled out my Les Paul Trad which lives in the cupboard due to my favouring the Strat. But WOW ...LP thru SD1 into Princeton is just pure magic! And thats with the SD drive only on 9 o clock (and i usually like heavy gain).
Dan is giving Pinot Cappuccino a run for his money! Loving the grooves here; Jam 3 is tastiest for me. Lastly: this week's band name / song title suggestion is "Dougie Likes the Blue One."
TS-9 sounded better in the mix, but for leads the SD-1 sounded better. Blues driver was better overall. Thanks for bringing a drummer and playing some music. Super Awesome. Cheers!
Somehow the TS9 makes the strat a little more vocal and raspy. The SD1 and Tele is a kick ass drive sound too. Fantastic format for the show guys, so nice to hear you playing in the mix, much more natural and really engaging 👌

SD-1... Have all these pedal but I just like the kick of the SD-1. No loser though as each has their on quality and could easily be in a line up. I'm enjoying these jam band videos. Your options for this format are almost limitless, really. For me, I prefer the SD-1, and I'm learning that I really enjoy Boss OD pedals. The BD-2 has been on my board for years, but I've found myself trying to find something else to top it. Now I'm thinking that a D&M Drive style Boss dual OD with the BD-2 and SD-1 would be amazing!

That SD1 sounded tremendous! Thanks for these band context videos leg ends, it helps give an idea of what levels of gain we need and how to shape drive pedals to allow for clarity and audibility. On a slightly festive note, are you fellows familiar with the Trans Siberian Orchestra? The guitar tones they can get are just insane and their renditions of classic Christmas songs are lovely to behold. My goal this holiday season is to be able to reproduce one of their solos from my own fingers!
You know it's going to be a good episode when Mick mentions Zakk Wylde before the playing starts. Zakk indeed used the SD1 along with the CH1 Super Chorus out in stereo to two 2203 JCM800s. My favourite guitar sound by far! Great episode. Mick, your band mixes are sounding really good.
@@SlingShot830201 No More Tears was this setup including a Crybaby and Rotovibe. His setup has stayed pretty similar over the years. The Super Chorus changed to a Chorus Ensemble at some point, and then the Boss pedals changed to MXR when Zakk got his signature pedals with them.
Just revisited the 3rd jam for about the 8th time and I know I said Dan knocked it out of the park but I'm really starting to appreciate the job Mick and Doug did behind him. All round that was great from start to finish. In fact reminds me of Phish when they cut loose and really start to muck about and enjoy themselves. This is a really great format. Gives everyone a chance to express themselves. More power to your elbows guys.
I think these are some of the most valuable shows you’ve done. Comparing gear in a band & TH-cam context really helps to highlight what makes the difference in context where certain nuances are going to get lost. (Of course, how the gear affects our performance is important, but you also want to consider what the audience can/cannot hear.) Generally I did find the TS to stand out more with the Strat while the SD stood out more with the other guitars. But probably the biggest take away is that the difference isn’t big enough to worry too much about. It did seem that, whenever it was on, the BD really stood out. Though that may have been just that it seemed to have more of just the right high-end. I do wonder if most of the differences in the band context could be made up for with an EQ.
Yes, yes, yes and YES! These jams are absolutely fabulous! Beyond the sheer fun of seeing you guys enjoy yourselves playing, they really put everything in context. I never thought I would want an SD-1 and a TS-9 so much as when I heard them stacked. Brilliant. BTW I agree with Dougie - I liked the blue one. And the yellow one. And the green one(s). Just great.
The price and it's similarity to the more expensive tubescreamer automatically make it the best pedal ever. It's also way more reliable than a ts9. That spring switch on a tubescreamer breaks so much. Anyone claiming that the boutique pedals are worth more than a regular tubscreamer are justifying their purchase. Either that or they are only bedroom players. SD-1 one sounds rad alone coming out of my mesa half stack clean tone.
I'm only here for the smiles! Both pedals seem to accomplish that - Can't go wrong and 'buy both' is probably the most sensible choice! Well done fellas. Loving this in-context live format.

I am new to the TPS community. I love the shows about all the gear and I tune in as I get ready for my day to the Q and A. Lately I have been loving the band demonstration of pedals and gear. More, please! Great playing. Great sounds. As Dan would say, “This is Awesome!”
They are incredibly similar circuits with the most notable difference being that the TS9 has symmetrical diode clipping and the SD1 has asymmetrical diode clipping. If you add a switch to a TS9 for an asymmetrical clipping mod it becomes so much more versatile. It's such a great mod. Remember Boss had a patient on the asymmetrical clipping overdrive so Maxon couldnt use asymmetrical when they designed the original tube screamer even if they thought it sounded better which in my opinion it can sound much better depending on the situation of course. Like Dan said here the tone stack also plays a big role In the differences but when most people say they prefer the SD1 it's because they prefer the asymmetrical clipping sound even if they dont even know what clipping is lol. Anyways both are excellent drives and they are both fully capable to work within any genre. I personally prefer a ts9 with a mod for an asymmetrical clipping option and a no diode clipping option (with a slight eq tweak in the no diode position to let some more low end through). And for a warmer open sounding drive I prefer to use a Klon instead of a SD1. But again the SD1 is just as capable; if I were to show up to a gig without my gear and all I had for an overdrive was a stock SD1 I wouldn't have any trouble dialing in a great tone.
I've owed both Tube Screamers and SD-1s and although I find both to be great pedals the SD-1 takes the cake, especially the Waza Craft edition I'm now using to drive my Marshall. I get most of the gain from the amp but turn the level up and the drive down on the SD-1 and get some amazing tones and tighter, more focused low end with better clarity. These pedals will not turn a clean amp dirty, but they will take a dirty amp into more complex territory and help you hone your tone. A great investment.
Wow, another great show. I haven't had a chance to comment on many of the recent videos, but let me add my voice to the chorus shouting how great the band setting format is. I really look forward to shows when you bring back our favorite bass player so that we can hear how things work in a two-guitar setting as well as a one-guitar setting. From my (limited) gigging experience, adding another rhythm/harmony instrument can really affect how things sound in the mix. But in the meantime, this is great stuff. Thanks guys!

Yes, lower gain overdrive and boost pedal stacking is the way to go. It seems to maintain some clarity while giving you added sustain and harmonics, but you are right about keeping the pedal's output close to unity.
Both, I've just added a 'that pedal show t shirt' to my list for santa. It'll be my third t shirt but I feel compelled. The recent band context vids are the best you have ever done. Highly listenable, let alone informative. Making me feel better about still using my beat up old SD 1 too.
Great show today guys. I have always thought which one of the sd-1/ts sounds best is about how the player hits the strings. I play lightly and so the ts often sounds too smooth and the bite in the sd-1 pushes me forward in the mix. Similarly when I listen to others that hit the guitar harder that same "bite" becomes overwhelming and the smoothness from the ts suits them better. BUT most importantly of all, I prefer the yellow to the green!
Also loving the band mix idea. Would love to hear different non-octave fuzzes - muffs, tone benders, fuzz faces in band mixes and what are enough mids. Since COVID and band inactivity my sense of what cuts (beyond a very general rule of thumb) has waned
Great demonstration and objective descriptions. I enjoy how you leave it to the observer to the side. This type of objective presentation is seldom seen on the Internet.
Dougie's right, the blue one's the best! This mostly served me by reinforcing that I like the sound of more full-freq ODs... Thus my Keeley 1962x, Catalinbread SFT and Supro Drive.
With Telecaster: alone SD-1, in a band SD-1. With Les Paul: alone SD-1, in a band SD-1 (slightly over TS9) With Stratocaster: alone TS9, in a band it's a tie. The winner is SD into TS9 with Stratocaster, that sound was amazing! What a great video btw, i'm subscribing right away, cheers!
In a band setting, with Mick on the strat, I think I like the TS9 the least. It just has such a full mid push. It’s almost colouring the sound too much. The SD1 allows more of the guitar come through while also giving it a nice push in the mids. Plus I prefer the SD1’s slightly more gnarly overdrive.
I think the SD-1 has exactly what I think the TS doesn't (and annoys me): the roll off of the highs in the TS makes it sound muffled to me, like you're listening to the tone in the next room, and makes it's nasal qualities that much more apparent. The SD-1 has enough clarity and bite that makes those things more attractive to me, though it's very gainy; I don't think I'd use it at lower gain settings, but I don't often go for such a gainy sound - which I thought he does best. All in all SD-1 came out on top to me.
@@Maschine_Elf oh, I bet. I totally love the sound people get out of it, it just doesn’t work for me. I prefer bluesbreaker style pedals. And out of these here on the show both Blues Driver and ODR-1 would be best for me.
@@Maschine_Elf lol loved the sound effects. Yea, it's pretty cool doing that, but then it's a different application/context and the other parts of the equation matter. The TS alone doesn't do it for me, for slightly broken up tones or fattening up tones. I don't play strats, I play a tele. And I prefer BB and Klon-style pedals for the break-up and boosted tones. In that context it just gives me more of what I love on my tele. The TS rolls off that chime and makes it too nasal to my ears.
The TS-9 has a large spike in high midrange, which makes the other frequencies seem lacking. However if your ears are sensitive to that frequency range (MINE ARE!) and or your guitar rig already has a similar hump, the TS-9 will sound like clangy hot garbage! The sd-1 if it offends is in the high range, but to remedy any harshness there is a high trim pot to remove it. The TS-9 can't trim it's abnoxious mid hump.
@@nunninkav you're right about what we hear being relative (that spike meaning it appears the rest is lacking). I use a HSS strat and a 50's tele, and in both cases the TS9 doesn't work for me: the humbucker on the strat is already mid heavy and kinda dark; and for the tele it dampens the chime that is usually associated with a tele. So with my gear it's not good. But there are plenty of examples of people that use it and I love their tone.
@@shinjial yep. If you are either deaf or you have a low output single coil which lacks midrange, you will enjoy the TS-9. Others, buy a Boss, maybe even "the blue one" ;)
Really in enjoyed the Band setting video this week. To me, this is so much more informative than trying to contextualize to backing track. The interactions of the band as both of you went through the different pedals and guitars was very interesting and enlightening. When the pedal combination would change, everyone would respond to it, often in subtle ways, but defiantly effected the direction of the jam. To me, the best matchup with the TS9 was the Strat. That pedal just takes the strat sound to a whole new place. Whereas the TS9 and the Les Paul was just too much mid grunt and really muddled the sound. The DS-1 worked with Lester much better :) The Tele could work with either. Only thing that was missing was for Mick have a go on the Lester. :)

@@michaelmichael7043 Same for me, but they both sound good. Based on the solo testing (without the band) I thought the SD-1 might cut through the mix more, but that wasn't the case to my ears. The winning solution for me might be to have multiple overdrives each set with a rather small amount of gain, and cascade them together when you need a bit more.
The hardest part is getting up there the first time. After that, it gets a lot easier. And remember, you're there to have fun. The more fun you have, the more fun your audience has!

Full band format is absolutely killer; hugely informative show has now become groovy as hell. Not to draw any comparison, but the jam format was why I used to always (and still) watch JHS, for Josh's awesome creative skills, and now getting to see you guys bring your musical creativity to the show in these larger arrangements actually inspires you to go and pick up your guitar first, and think about buying pedals later

Well, for me it is clear why I got ts9, sd1 and bd2... They sound great. They are classics. If you can you must get these pedals... Tone is something amazing and contextual... There are days I like the clarity and transparency of the TS9, that mid boost... somedays I would go for SD1 (They are quite simliar and different). BD2 sounds completely different to my ears. But These are great pedals...
If I had to choose one of them I would be in double trouble... But I would go for TS9 cause I love SRV and his sound.

I have been watching your show for years and I have never decided to subscribe nor have I written any comment anywhere on TH-cam. But today, finally, I decided to do both. The only reason is that you went to a higher level and finally showed us what a guitar pedal means in the context of basic instruments in one band with multiple different guitars. This format puts you in a difficult position because all future shows must not be less than this. Your opinion, knowledge and patience in making each clip is invaluable to many who need to make decisions and, believe it or not, spend the money we have less and less today. These 36 minutes should be a global introduction to the world of basic overdrive pedals and basic guitar types in the context of the band. Not only that, the type of music you performed is, for me, exactly one in which any differences can be heard and I think you hit it 100 percent. I wish you all the best. I’ve always been a TS-9 fan, but after hearing these examples, I think I need an SD-1. 😀
It is not expensive and a good staple pedal to have in your collection.
I've used both. Get a Bluesdriver...or at least compare in store. You'll be surprised with the Bluesdriver. The name doesnt fit that pedal. It's not just for blues. Works great for 80s rock and metal tones

In the band jam, the SD-1 with the Tele was no doubt my favorite combination. As for the Strat I think I liked it more the few times Mick engaged the BD-2.

The SD-1 wins this one, surprisingly! It retains some natural harmonics in the highs, and as someone already mentioned, doesn't roll off the highs as much as the TS-9. What you''re getting then is the sweet chime + the overdrive. More clarity and more bite. Definitely better in a band context. The TS-9 is just a tiny bit muffled. If they weren't side by side most people wouldn't be able to notice, though.
Disagree. Both great pedals, but TS9 has more "high" treble and more "low" bass. SD-1 is all mids and kills more bass than the TS.
Sd1 sounds fuller and more natural to me. More like an overdriven tube amp.
Surprisingly feel I could use either and me being a TS guy for a long time My TS was modded by Analogman and has lasted 35 years or more and still counting

As others have said, this “band context” format is just so so so great. You can keep going down the rabbit hole of possibilities, but I’d just like to say that the differences between OD pedals in a band context also depends on whether there’s a second guitarist and what their tone is like. I know. I know. The band possibilities are endless (keys, distorted bass, etc) but a two guitarist rock band is very common and has a major impact on partnered rhythm tones and certainly solo tones to stand out. 😁

Great video as always and love to see the SD-1 getting some love. Although I have to say, Can’t believe you had an SD-1 and a BD-2 on the board and didn’t stack them! One of my all time favourite combos
I love this. That Pedal Show is pulling us from the bedrooms and preparing us for gigs. All with reasonable gig levels, attainable amps, pedals that we can all afford, and showing us how to use it.

I picked up a SD 1 Second hand on a whim, having never heard one before.
I love the damn thing. I'm glad to hear it keeping up with the other pedals. They all sound great to my ears.
I have a ts-9 but thinking about swapping it for a sd-1.
SD-1 boosting my Recto has been my go-to sound for the last decade on the road! That gnarly top end makes the Mesa come alive! Thanks for making this boys!

I appreciate that you guys are using pedals that most of us have owned or at least tried. While I love all the boutique stuff I dig the real world stuff too once and a while. Both pedals have their place for sure. I prefer the SD1 with humbuckers and the TS with singlecoils.
In my band I use both. I prefer the overdrive tone of the Boss, so I run the tube screamer into it for a lead boost like hitting the front of an amp.
Likewise. And a Blues Driver
TS > SD-1 > BD-2
The holy trinity of gain stack
The SD-1 has been in my rig for like 20 years. For me, there's no other overdrive pedal. I like it for the reason stated at the beginning: it's more aggressive. The TS-9 sounds a little muddy and I prefer a crisp, bright sound. Nice to get a good listen between the two. Would have been nice to hear some chords with the Blues Driver. That was my second choice for an overdrive pedal and I suspect it sounds very much like the TS-9.
Blues Driver sounds nothing like a TS-9, it's based on Marshall Bluesbreaker and has way more bass and crispy highs like a cranked amp, where a Tube Screamer cuts low end and top end and pushes mids. Also the Tube Screamers (and SD-1) mix in a bit of the clean signal, the Blues Driver does not.
@@everope ya the Blues Driver with the gain set up to a certain point will give you almost Jimi Hendrix vibes, although if im not mistaken Jimi just played straight through a cranked Marshall amp,
the Tube Screamer definitely has more of a rock tone, but if you pair it on certain amps you can get some pretty high gain.
alot of metal bands used the tube screamer for 80% of metal that came out late 70's, early 80's.
the Blues Driver is a like clean boost, when you turn up the gain it gives you a crunchy bluesy sound. you gotta be careful what you pair with it,
because it won't take certain pedals as well as the Boss Overdrive and Tube screamer. i noticed where they had it on there pedal board.
@@Jeymez Metal bands use a Tubescreamer as a clean boost with the level maxed and the gain below 25%. Thus pushing the tubes into high-er gain while tightening up any flubbyness. The BD-2 goes from clean boost to a raunchy, fuzzy distortion, with a much flatter EQ. Much more gain on tap with the Blues Driver.
Both can be heavy rock machines depending on the amp/pickups.
I also liked the stack. I was using the tube screamer almost always in front, one day a friend came to my house a drummer by the way, and we played, i was playing guitar and he played with the pedals. I have three overdrives/ distortions, a ts9 style by behringer, a rats by foxgear and a bass big muff. He puts the ''ts'' after the others and i instantly loved it. The filter and compression of the circuit colours the sound,it takes a bit the hair and bite of the other drives out, and boosts a bit the amp. Changing the parameters can sound like changing the whole amp to an other one. Stack it and try settings out of the norm, a non guitarist experimenting took my sound to unknown places that i was avoiding without thinking about it by following the ''norm''
Had an SD1 as my 3rd ever pedal purchase, been on every pedalboard I've ever used, only recently appreciated the tube screamer!

I like the shows that feature the classic pedals that we all have like the SD1 and TS, showing how they are used and set up.
And nice to see them with the modern classics like the DD-200. Another great show.
Both the tube screamer and OD-1 are great for minimizing the 'drive' and maxing the level for a clean boost!

This video really points out the subtle differences in these pedals. I already have the SD-1. But now I'm thinking I need both for what they do separately, and to get that SD-1 into the TS9. LOVED that tone. I would love to see more live band jamming. It gives a very real world perspective on the pedals, and I just love to hear you two play.

Free-form creativity, this is how new ground is broken and glorious sounds emerge. I’m probably not alone is saying that I could listen to this for hours.
In the mix is absolutely the best even though I only play by myself. I find the interaction very cool. What I've gotten from this particular video is that I prefer the SD-1, but stacked was awesome. Guys, I know its more difficult to do the band format, but please keep going with it. I especially enjoy watching how all of you (yes Dougie too) meld at certain times. Coming from a drummer background, I do remember what it was like when things just started taking on a certain feel.
I've seen a lot of That Pedal Show episodes. None have been more informative and useful than this one. I especially appreciated Mick's systematic play a lick, switch, play the same lick again, switch approach. Well done by all.
TS-9 for me. Except I also really liked the blue one.

Thank you for these band mix episodes and for starting to concentrate on more common stuff. The episodes on top shelf $300+ pedals are necessary as well but so are these $50-$100 pedal episodes! And the context pedals here are spot on. We've needed this episode for 5 years! 😁
The only problem I see with these comparing pedal videos, is that once Mick has a strat in his hand you are too mesmerised with his playing to spot any variables in tone. Awesome playing as usual guys

My SD-1 has been an essential part of my rig for many years and I LOVE the crunch it gives me. Only downside has been trying to tame the mids.

@@stephsheehy3576 Using as a boost in front of a more scooped overdrive amp channel has helped. Also, staying away from a very midrangey guitar like a LP, and using more single coils. Currently, I'm using a Boss Katana Artist MkII, and I have tweaked the EQ settings on each patch to compensate. I still can't use the SD-1 in all possible situations; but when it works, I love the sound.
@@MrvlZmb Totally. I just bought an SD1 for my Strat into 65PRRI (scooped mids), and it sounds great. Ive been setting my SD1 tone at about 10 o clock, and drive at about 12 for Rock. But then i pulled out my Les Paul Trad which lives in the cupboard due to my favouring the Strat. But WOW ...LP thru SD1 into Princeton is just pure magic! And thats with the SD drive only on 9 o clock (and i usually like heavy gain).

Somehow the TS9 makes the strat a little more vocal and raspy. The SD1 and Tele is a kick ass drive sound too. Fantastic format for the show guys, so nice to hear you playing in the mix, much more natural and really engaging 👌

SD-1... Have all these pedal but I just like the kick of the SD-1. No loser though as each has their on quality and could easily be in a line up. I'm enjoying these jam band videos. Your options for this format are almost limitless, really. For me, I prefer the SD-1, and I'm learning that I really enjoy Boss OD pedals. The BD-2 has been on my board for years, but I've found myself trying to find something else to top it. Now I'm thinking that a D&M Drive style Boss dual OD with the BD-2 and SD-1 would be amazing!
I love this live format so much!! The only thing I would want to hear are examples of ‘not working in a mix and how to fix’. Especially for the same pedal

That SD1 sounded tremendous! Thanks for these band context videos leg ends, it helps give an idea of what levels of gain we need and how to shape drive pedals to allow for clarity and audibility. On a slightly festive note, are you fellows familiar with the Trans Siberian Orchestra? The guitar tones they can get are just insane and their renditions of classic Christmas songs are lovely to behold. My goal this holiday season is to be able to reproduce one of their solos from my own fingers!

You know it's going to be a good episode when Mick mentions Zakk Wylde before the playing starts. Zakk indeed used the SD1 along with the CH1 Super Chorus out in stereo to two 2203 JCM800s. My favourite guitar sound by far! Great episode. Mick, your band mixes are sounding really good.

@@SlingShot830201 No More Tears was this setup including a Crybaby and Rotovibe. His setup has stayed pretty similar over the years. The Super Chorus changed to a Chorus Ensemble at some point, and then the Boss pedals changed to MXR when Zakk got his signature pedals with them.

Just revisited the 3rd jam for about the 8th time and I know I said Dan knocked it out of the park but I'm really starting to appreciate the job Mick and Doug did behind him. All round that was great from start to finish. In fact reminds me of Phish when they cut loose and really start to muck about and enjoy themselves. This is a really great format. Gives everyone a chance to express themselves. More power to your elbows guys.

I think these are some of the most valuable shows you’ve done. Comparing gear in a band & TH-cam context really helps to highlight what makes the difference in context where certain nuances are going to get lost. (Of course, how the gear affects our performance is important, but you also want to consider what the audience can/cannot hear.) Generally I did find the TS to stand out more with the Strat while the SD stood out more with the other guitars. But probably the biggest take away is that the difference isn’t big enough to worry too much about. It did seem that, whenever it was on, the BD really stood out. Though that may have been just that it seemed to have more of just the right high-end. I do wonder if most of the differences in the band context could be made up for with an EQ.

Yes, yes, yes and YES! These jams are absolutely fabulous! Beyond the sheer fun of seeing you guys enjoy yourselves playing, they really put everything in context. I never thought I would want an SD-1 and a TS-9 so much as when I heard them stacked. Brilliant.

I have never liked the tube screamer, but love the SD 1. For $50, it's the best overdrive on the market and better than $200 boutique pedals.
It's great for 50$ yes, but there not really a comparison to more expensive "boutique" pedals.
The price and it's similarity to the more expensive tubescreamer automatically make it the best pedal ever. It's also way more reliable than a ts9. That spring switch on a tubescreamer breaks so much. Anyone claiming that the boutique pedals are worth more than a regular tubscreamer are justifying their purchase. Either that or they are only bedroom players. SD-1 one sounds rad alone coming out of my mesa half stack clean tone.
I'm only here for the smiles! Both pedals seem to accomplish that - Can't go wrong and 'buy both' is probably the most sensible choice! Well done fellas. Loving this in-context live format.

I am new to the TPS community. I love the shows about all the gear and I tune in as I get ready for my day to the Q and A. Lately I have been loving the band demonstration of pedals and gear. More, please! Great playing. Great sounds. As Dan would say, “This is Awesome!”
They are incredibly similar circuits with the most notable difference being that the TS9 has symmetrical diode clipping and the SD1 has asymmetrical diode clipping. If you add a switch to a TS9 for an asymmetrical clipping mod it becomes so much more versatile. It's such a great mod. Remember Boss had a patient on the asymmetrical clipping overdrive so Maxon couldnt use asymmetrical when they designed the original tube screamer even if they thought it sounded better which in my opinion it can sound much better depending on the situation of course. Like Dan said here the tone stack also plays a big role In the differences but when most people say they prefer the SD1 it's because they prefer the asymmetrical clipping sound even if they dont even know what clipping is lol. Anyways both are excellent drives and they are both fully capable to work within any genre. I personally prefer a ts9 with a mod for an asymmetrical clipping option and a no diode clipping option (with a slight eq tweak in the no diode position to let some more low end through). And for a warmer open sounding drive I prefer to use a Klon instead of a SD1. But again the SD1 is just as capable; if I were to show up to a gig without my gear and all I had for an overdrive was a stock SD1 I wouldn't have any trouble dialing in a great tone.

There is no looser in my opinion. No wrong pedal at all.
I've owed both Tube Screamers and SD-1s and although I find both to be great pedals the SD-1 takes the cake, especially the Waza Craft edition I'm now using to drive my Marshall. I get most of the gain from the amp but turn the level up and the drive down on the SD-1 and get some amazing tones and tighter, more focused low end with better clarity. These pedals will not turn a clean amp dirty, but they will take a dirty amp into more complex territory and help you hone your tone. A great investment.

Wow, another great show. I haven't had a chance to comment on many of the recent videos, but let me add my voice to the chorus shouting how great the band setting format is. I really look forward to shows when you bring back our favorite bass player so that we can hear how things work in a two-guitar setting as well as a one-guitar setting. From my (limited) gigging experience, adding another rhythm/harmony instrument can really affect how things sound in the mix. But in the meantime, this is great stuff. Thanks guys!

Yes, lower gain overdrive and boost pedal stacking is the way to go. It seems to maintain some clarity while giving you added sustain and harmonics, but you are right about keeping the pedal's output close to unity.
Both, I've just added a 'that pedal show t shirt' to my list for santa. It'll be my third t shirt but I feel compelled. The recent band context vids are the best you have ever done. Highly listenable, let alone informative. Making me feel better about still using my beat up old SD 1 too.

I have always thought which one of the sd-1/ts sounds best is about how the player hits the strings.
I play lightly and so the ts often sounds too smooth and the bite in the sd-1 pushes me forward in the mix.
Similarly when I listen to others that hit the guitar harder that same "bite" becomes overwhelming and the smoothness from the ts suits them better.
BUT most importantly of all, I prefer the yellow to the green!

This mostly served me by reinforcing that I like the sound of more full-freq ODs... Thus my Keeley 1962x, Catalinbread SFT and Supro Drive.
1962x is fast becoming my fave drive. Second only to my Boss OD-3...:)

With Telecaster: alone SD-1, in a band SD-1.
With Les Paul: alone SD-1, in a band SD-1 (slightly over TS9)
With Stratocaster: alone TS9, in a band it's a tie.
The winner is SD into TS9 with Stratocaster, that sound was amazing!

In a band setting, with Mick on the strat, I think I like the TS9 the least. It just has such a full mid push. It’s almost colouring the sound too much. The SD1 allows more of the guitar come through while also giving it a nice push in the mids. Plus I prefer the SD1’s slightly more gnarly overdrive.
Perfect way to show these pedals, in a band situation, which is what it's about.

I think the SD-1 has exactly what I think the TS doesn't (and annoys me): the roll off of the highs in the TS makes it sound muffled to me, like you're listening to the tone in the next room, and makes it's nasal qualities that much more apparent. The SD-1 has enough clarity and bite that makes those things more attractive to me, though it's very gainy; I don't think I'd use it at lower gain settings, but I don't often go for such a gainy sound - which I thought he does best.
All in all SD-1 came out on top to me.
@@Maschine_Elf oh, I bet. I totally love the sound people get out of it, it just doesn’t work for me. I prefer bluesbreaker style pedals. And out of these here on the show both Blues Driver and ODR-1 would be best for me.
@@Maschine_Elf lol loved the sound effects. Yea, it's pretty cool doing that, but then it's a different application/context and the other parts of the equation matter. The TS alone doesn't do it for me, for slightly broken up tones or fattening up tones.
I don't play strats, I play a tele. And I prefer BB and Klon-style pedals for the break-up and boosted tones. In that context it just gives me more of what I love on my tele. The TS rolls off that chime and makes it too nasal to my ears.
The TS-9 has a large spike in high midrange, which makes the other frequencies seem lacking. However if your ears are sensitive to that frequency range (MINE ARE!) and or your guitar rig already has a similar hump, the TS-9 will sound like clangy hot garbage! The sd-1 if it offends is in the high range, but to remedy any harshness there is a high trim pot to remove it. The TS-9 can't trim it's abnoxious mid hump.
@@nunninkav you're right about what we hear being relative (that spike meaning it appears the rest is lacking). I use a HSS strat and a 50's tele, and in both cases the TS9 doesn't work for me: the humbucker on the strat is already mid heavy and kinda dark; and for the tele it dampens the chime that is usually associated with a tele. So with my gear it's not good.
But there are plenty of examples of people that use it and I love their tone.
@@shinjial yep. If you are either deaf or you have a low output single coil which lacks midrange, you will enjoy the TS-9. Others, buy a Boss, maybe even "the blue one" ;)

Really in enjoyed the Band setting video this week. To me, this is so much more informative than trying to contextualize to backing track. The interactions of the band as both of you went through the different pedals and guitars was very interesting and enlightening. When the pedal combination would change, everyone would respond to it, often in subtle ways, but defiantly effected the direction of the jam. To me, the best matchup with the TS9 was the Strat. That pedal just takes the strat sound to a whole new place. Whereas the TS9 and the Les Paul was just too much mid grunt and really muddled the sound. The DS-1 worked with Lester much better :) The Tele could work with either. Only thing that was missing was for Mick have a go on the Lester. :)
