Reason 1 Iconic tone, 2 versatile, 3 sound quality, 4 works well with other pedals, 5 Boss quality you can count on, 6 Built to last! 7 price. 8 Excellent for blues rock,9 Best sounding Overdrive on the market! It's on my board 20 yrs and got it used. I pity the fool that doesn't have one 😂
I've owned a few over my career, dont own one at the moment. My drive selections for quite a while have been an MXR TS clone, an Ari9n SOD-1, and a modded Turbo Rat. The MXR has a dip switch in it that will change the tone stack to an SD... Guitar Center puts them on a blowout sale about this time every year😉
One of the few things in life that never downgraded quality for sake of selling more over a short period of time. Boss pedals for the win! My sd-1 is over 35 years old and never had any issue's with it. It's the equivelant of a good 'ol Nokia for musicians.
I like the Nokia comparison. True. Another great thing about these, besides sounding great, is that you can get another one in just about any music shop anywhere on the planet. Very handy for a touring guitarist.
All you need to know is Prince, who could have any pedal of any kind regardless of price for whatever he needed, be it gain, modulation, etc, his board was nearly ALL Boss pedals(save for a wah and Whammy pedal). If that's not and endorsement, I don't know what is!
The late, great, Criss Oliva (of Savatage) used 2 of these: both full up, with one tone all the way off (for rhythm) and the other all the way up (solo's), running into the clean channel on (usually) a Marshall amp. The man had tone for days.
As a bass player working in a trio I always used a Boss CE2 Chorus when the guitarist went into a solo, it filled the sound out perfectly. Another useful one was the OC 2 octave, as long as it was no deeper then a low B.
More than a guitar pedal... I've moved this to my electro synth setup as a send on the desk and it is a great sound shaping tool. Had the pedal for 25 years and still rock solid!
I got some of SD1 used for mods, I got the best of it by disconnecting one cap C6, and replacing the electrolytic 47uf cap for another 47uf but at 100V (bigger) the sound improves big time, I don't recommend touch anything else, but if you want to go to a completely new level, get rid of all the switching components section (caps, resistors, transistors, and some coupling) and add a true bypass module like those Griffin Effects to continue using the flip flop switching, the extra components actually muffle the sound, by clearing this you actually get a clear and louder pedal, you will realize that this is the only pedal you need for the rest of you life.
I have one and I'm so glad I never got rid of it. Other pedals have come and gone but this one has always been in the stable. I can't be certain but I believe I got mine in 2002.
Plug n play, had used the older one in late 70's , and helped older practice amps wake up., ⏰ 🎸 as old as this is (and I am, ) it's still very popular from the current videos
I actually have and use 66 pedals, all of them come to my every gig. I have at least 20 pricey Overdrives. BIG BUT. If I am asked to recommend an OD and yet know nothing about the style you will use it in I would recommend the Boss SD-1. Even later if you specialize in a certain sound etc. and get another OD you will still have that Boss sitting beside it. There always a few tunes you will 'need' it for :-)
I have my SD-1 since 1998 and still one of my gems, specially when I use it like a boost, is like feeding the sound with a powerful active humbucker while playing the rhythm guitar.
I went digital awhile back, circa Axe FX II era, when Kemper was still newish, but mature. Sold off my pedals. But then I started adding pedals again, mostly just OD and Distortion pedals. Decided to Collect, 'classic' and/or 'iconic' dirt pedals. Why? One was, because the Axe FX III I was at, as well as some digital combos work well with them, But I also added back one Tube Combo. And frankly I just like pedals. One of the first was the SD-1. THough I did go for the WAZA version, catching a great sale on them.
A DOD was the first one that I bought, I replaced it with a SD1 when my dad 'borrowed' it. It has never left my pedalboard since I have had it in conjunction with other overdrives and still do, currently with a zendrive clone which is always on with a small amount of drive. I bought the DOD IN '87 I think.
I've had the sd1 for years and love it. Several years ago I came across a guy called Robert Keeley who modded the sd1. I sent my stock sd1 to the states and it has never left my side since. These days Keeley mod new pedals and sell onwards. Its nice to have an early Keeley mod and the Keeley logo he put on my pedal is as indestructible as the bloody pedal. 😂👍
I've been trying a lot of stack combos the past couple of years between od,distortion, boosters and equalizers (od/od , booster/od, booster/booster od/distortion booster/dist, eq/booster ...etc) I find that one of my very favorite pairs is the sd1/ehx the glove (ocd clone) it sounds amazing
I put this peddle behind my boss ds 1 distortion and crank all the settings like level and drive up with the tone at noon for some good nirvana sounds same setting the ds one too
Did Boss send out a request to all the guitar youtube channels to feature the SD-1? This is like the 4th one I've seen this week featuring this pedal. Also had the salesperson at my local shop recommend the pedal to me! lol. It's a great pedal. I'm not dogging the pedal. It's just curious that all of a sudden there are multiple videos made about this pedal from multiple channels in a very short span of time.
things like this happen a lot of times and not only in the music world. Nowadays we're all influencing others, a simple online article could snowball into youtube channels minds.
Cheap but seriously great. Plug an EMG equipped guitar through an SD-1 into a JCM800. Massive chainsaw tone. Durable too. I have an '82 that has never given me grief.
Put one if front of a fuzz (that plays nice with other pedals), distortion or another overdrive and get them flubby bottoms nice and tight! Now do the SD-9! Another killer “must have” pedal.
I like to use em the other way around. You filter the fuzz through the od circuit, which gives them better mids and cleans up the lows, but without sacrificing that fuzzy attack.
i have a tube screamer since i started playing 2 years ago i never turned it off when i play pretty much (unless super clean) so explain the diffrences on what makes this a must have if someone has a tube screamer OR is there no point for me to buy a SD-1 if im content with ts9
I have the sd1. ts9..and the 808...the difference between the tube screamers and sd1 is the ts are a little compressed the sd1 is bright and open sounding .I played the tube screamers forever..got sd1 and it replaced them....after all Zack Wylde and john 5 can't be wrong🤘
SD-1 turns every Tube Amp into a Rocking Monster, even my Class 5 Marshall (5 wats no over drive) with the SD1 in front of it, it sounds awsome. Not to mention the larger amps, and the SD1 Loves Marshall Plexis, Ive also heard of adding another SD1 in line and double the Awsomeness, the Overtones and Pinch harmonics are almost automatic And its Overdrive not "Distortion" its just an increase in Input so it doesnt sound Fuzzy
i have indeed been that snobby guitarist who turned his nose up at Boss pedals. The DS-1 in particular sounds nasty to me (not in a good way). But DAMN i am sold on this pedal. I don’t need it, but I’m now convinced of this pedal’s stature in the world of guitar and guitar pedals.
Great video Dagan. I love the versatility of this pedal. Never had one but which one should I get? Such as… Waza, Non Waza, 80’s or 90’s version. Would prefer to power it with an isolated power brick. I would use this with a couple of 2011 Gibson Melody Makers, one has a stock single coil Strat like pickup, the other has a Lollar Melody Maker P90 in it. Thank you.
I'm pretty sure that patent expired ages ago but it was still in effect when Ibanez created the original Tube Screamer. hence their choice to make it a symmetrical clipper. Today, asymmetrical clipping is not hard to find.
So I’m using an orange crush . It’s got that switch to go from clean to Dirty . Would this pedal nest ne ised with the dirty on and then this pedal will give it extra “ death metal “ sound ? Or what best pedal I’m trying to get more old school death metal tone . Thank you
Just got a orange super crush head and trying to dial in a 80s thrash tone, don’t know should I get a EQ pedal to shape the tone or a tube screamer/OD pedal to get that thrash tone.
The rock stars that he mentioned more than likely had their pedals modified as well as their back-line gear. That's why they get the wicked tones that they have.
Volume cranked, drive at about 7 o’clock, tone at about 11 o’clock: the perfect clean boost to give your clean amp some grit, while simultaneously acting as the perfect gain boost for heavy shredders. Most overdrive pedals aren’t that versatile, especially for the money. The SD-1 is king, and has a permanent place on my board, outlasting the TS9, 808, RC booster, MXR Micro Amp etc…
I have an unusual set of gear, and I bought this as my first pedal when I had a resurgence in electric guitar playing - when I first started at age 16, pedals weren't a thing like they are now in my 50s. My guitar is an incredible sounding (and playing) Godin solid body, LG EMG it's called, with double humbucking pickups, active too. This pedal does not have an iconic tone when mixed with this guitar, when mixed with this guitar and stacked with other pedals, the sound quality isn't very high end, and about the only thing I can agree with from that other commenter is that it would take some effort to destroy - isn't that always the way with evil things.
I hate how sterile, cold, nasal and THIN it makes the tone. The only thing I do like, is how it makes the notes sustain better, brings out harmonics way easier etc. Other than that. Yes, absolutely and Prince was innovative but chose BOSS because...they also SOUND GREAT too.

Savatage's guitar tone is always super tasty.
Still have mine and used it off an on for 34 years. Used it on albums tours and still to this day .
I still have mine from the early 90s. Still use it to this day. Absolutely ❤ it.!!
I bought the 40th Anniversary SD1 model a while back and absolutely love it!
As a bass player working in a trio I always used a Boss CE2 Chorus when the guitarist went into a solo, it filled the sound out perfectly. Another useful one was the OC 2 octave, as long as it was no deeper then a low B.

6. My favorite guitarist of all time Criss Oliva used two, one for main crunch tones and one for a solo boost.
I love mine. I pair mine up with a Boss Blues Driver and it is awesome.
Same here along with GE-7. It's all I need!
What do use it as a boost for solos? Or both always on?
@@nickklein4676 Probably depends on the song
I pair mine with the Fulltone OCD, sounds great together or separately
So thats how it works, great Demo and playing, i never realized how much influence the Tone pedal has 👍😁
Absolute beast of a pedal. This one is never leaving my board!
It's the only pedal I own, and for now it's the only pedal I need. Works really well together with the boss katana 100 mkII. 😄
I have many pedals. Too many lol. But I will never part with my SD-1. Nothing else quite sounds like it.

Truly indispensable. Boutiques just can’t quite nail the same sound.
Ya man, big fan of the SD 1! Found 1 from 1986, and is currently on my board, thanks!
Best distortion pedal ever. Walks all over tube screamer. And Wazza versions.
I actually have and use 66 pedals, all of them come to my every gig. I have at least 20 pricey Overdrives. BIG BUT. Just bought one because of it.
I have my SD-1 since 1998 and still one of my gems, specially when I use it like a boost, is like feeding the sound with a powerful active humbucker while playing the rhythm guitar.
The first pedal I bought, and after trying much pricer overdrives I have never seen a better one
Stellar chops as always! I really enjoyed listening to the playing. Def know how to make good use of the pedal.

Would this be a good alternative to a tube screamer?
Yes in my opinion.. they both are killers!
It's a little different than a tube screamer. Tube screamer is killer also in my opinion
Killer pedal! I didn't like any drive pedals I tried until I found this one. It's great for tightening up amp sims too.
Didn't like any at all?

Is there a concerted effort to sell the SD-1 now? I've seen 3 or 4 popular youtuber featuring the pedal this week.
Was just gonna ask this…there’s a bunch of new videos featuring it. Not sure why.

I prefer speaker breakup (25 watt Celestion greenbacks) and an EQ. Its all good.
The rock stars that he mentioned more than likely had their pedals modified as well as their back-line gear. That's why they get the wicked tones that they have.
A tried and true classic, it hits that sweet spot. Check out a TS9 for a more meaty OD :)
Can you make a vid of boss ds2 , reason to by. Thank you dagan

How come in the last week EVERY channel has done a SD-1 video?!
Christmas is coming and they need to advertise likely presents...
