    I hear the differences you mentioned. In the context of this video (not hearing them live), I prefer the TS-9. It seems to be crisper and more pronounced. The TS-808 seems like it could easily get lost in the frequency soup of a live mix.

    • @c1arkj
      @c1arkj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      completely subjective to the setting it is on and to what pickups you are using. I prefer the 808 as it doesn't cut out sound but magnifies it. I can switch from my neck to my bridge pickup to make up for whatever frequency I want to hit.

  • @wrobinson1702
    @wrobinson1702 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree with most of the posters here. The TS9 is brighter, crisper sharper, however you describe it. Plus-it cuts thru Marty's guitar loop more clearly than TS808. And that alone would be even more important in the context of a full Blues/Rock band. (2 guitars, bass, drums)

    I came upon this video because I am interested in purchasing one if these pedals. It was great to find a comparison video that did a very nice job at making my decision even tougher! Both pedals sound GREAT! I agree that the TS808 is a bit smoother then the TS9. However, it all really depends on your playing style, and ears. You can't go wrong with either pedal.

    From my experience, a TS808 into a Vox AC30 is one of the greatest sounds you will ever hear and is what sold me to the TS808 in the first place! IMO the TS808 is best for handwired Amps (British especially).

    YOU MARTY TAUGHT ME how to play my very first cover solo with the Fade to Black video by Metallica you made six years ago. In fact, that solo was the first thing I had ever learned to play on guitar... I was only 18. Over the years, my ability to play has grown tremendously due to that inspiration I received from you that day so many years ago and for that I am forever grateful for what it is you've meant to me in my life and to the lives of many others. Helping me find my love for guitar changed my life and always will I be thankful and appreciative for everything it is you do. Thank you Marty. 😌
    Now normally I do not do this and never have I requested a video to be made... however, there is a solo I'd absolutely love if you could help me with and learn to play. It's the opening solo to "The Ballad" by Testament. Nobody has ever made a tutorial video for that song, ever! It'd be amazing if you could. Again, thank you for everything Marty, truly 🙂

    These pedals have different purposes to me. The TS808 is better on its own than the TS9, but the TS9 is a god as an overdrive add for tone tweaking any distortion you're running or for already warmer amp tones. Very different uses.

  • @vicpnut1
    @vicpnut1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    U weren’t kidding about the 9 ,definitely a lil harsh on the high end. The 808 to me, is more smooth / even across the frequencies

  • @StraightToSuperSound
    @StraightToSuperSound ปีที่แล้ว +1

    TS9 came in 1981, production years 9-series where first 1981 to 1985. These two pedals are almost the same internally but TS9 had different output, what caused the pedal sound brighter and less soft or smooth. Then there was a rare ST9 Super Tube Screamer which was only sold in Europe and Australia. I got TS9DX which have more options and manual says this; TURBO : Delivers a powerful, bottom thick sound popular with today’s alterna-tive / modern rock guitarists. - HOT : Crunchier tone with boosted mids that will have sounding like you’ve just plugged into a wall of 4×12’s. then; + Mode : Grittier that the original Tube Screamer and first but here final - TS9 : The classic TS9. No modifications, exactly like the original. Classic pedal series indeed!
    Very nice comparsion video and nice playing.

    I think that the TS808 really shines when used to push a distorted amp into a really saturated, compressed rock sound. I even use it with a fuzz face, I find that the warmer sound compared to the TS9 prevents it from getting too shrill.

    I love all the Tube Screamer models, but my favorite is the TS808. I recently purchased the TS808 reissue and got compliments on my tone from band members after punching it in for the first song. To my ears, it's sound is slightly more appealing than the other models. It has instantly become a valuable tool on my pedalboard.

    The jam at the end with those settings has me liking the ts9 better. The grit and the cutting through sold me, even though I was rooting for the 808 the whole time.

    I'm with you, Marty; I'll take the TS808 over the TS-9 any day (with a Strat). The 808 has just enough of that "warmer" tone to make the difference for me.

  • @elidlewis
    @elidlewis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Fantastic comparo! It's a hard call to make between the two. I dig the rich, smooth, "creaminess" of the 808, until the TS9 comes in. Then I really enjoy the clarity. I think you're right on Marty, in that the 808 makes a great pedal for straight up lead, whereas I prefer the punch and clarity of the TS9 for everything else. I might be a little biased because I just got a TS9, but I think someone nailed it in a comment below: the TS9 has more punch for live performances, whereas the 808 would work better in the studio. Either way, great vid, keep 'em coming!

    • @c1arkj
      @c1arkj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      clarity can be achieved on the 808 via simple amp/guitar adjustments. I suppose it just depends on how one is used to playing in their default setup.

    I think the 9 is brighter but the 808 sounds warmer. I use a modified TS9. Not sure exactly what was put in it or modified but it has the tone range of both and the saturation can go a lot heavier. I'd be lost without it.

    I like the green one. :-) I think the TS9 cuts through better with solos whether live or in a mix. 808 does have the better mellow buttery sound, love it on a Hot Rod Dlx III with some amp drive. But, and this is the catch, they react differently to pickups and amps. So, it all depends on what you play and with backing or not and what setup you have. Personally love both, can't go wrong with the green. I'll bet if people listen to this video with 10" monitor speakers on a good system they get a whole different view than from $100 logitechs. Just sayin'.... Equipment, equipment, equipment. We can never have enough.

    The TS8 seems like it removes some high end and the TS9 seems like it adds a little. With the tone cranked, I feel the 9 has a little too much on the high end but at 12 oclock I prefer the TS9. So it comes down to settings for me.

    Great video. As presented, I think that they sound increasingly similar as the drive gets cranked up, not sure how tweaking the tone and level more would affect this. But with low drive and high tone, the 808 sounded a lot better, warmer to me.

    I think you should try to match the sound, rather than the position of the knobs. To my ears, the TS9 needs to be dialed back ever so slightly to make it sound like the TS808. If the knobs on the TS808 max out at 10, the TS9 can probably go up to 11.

    I think a good summary of these pedals would be that the 9 has a bit better tone at low drive, whereas the 808 sounds better when the drive is turned up. I felt that the depth of the 808 shines a little more at high drive, but they’re so similar I feel that the difference is negligible. It’s like having 2 power drills made by the same brand, but 1 year apart, the differences are so minor that only someone highly trained to notices any difference

    I have a TS808, Squier CV 50’s Telecaster and a Fender Blues Junior IV. I struggled at first to find out what was the big thing about this pedal. If you are looking for big distortion this pedal is not for you. It is famous for pushing a breaking up amp to get that breakup from the tubes and I have to agree. It is an amazing pedal but in my opinion it has it’s limitations although very few of them. God bless!!!

    Thanks Marty well done video as usual. I could definitely hear the differences I myself prefer the 808 ironically I came across your video because I recently bought an 808 and I never owned one until today and I really like it as far as the ts9 I don't have that but by your comparison I can say I I think I chose the right pedal with the 808 for my preferences. Cheers

    I have both the TS808 and TS9 on my board. I use the TS808 for warmer drive and the TS9 when I want a little harder drive. And the two together when I want to fly like a maniac over the clouds. I have a story about my TS9. I did a lot of research and pulled pictures of the boards for all versions of the TS9 (or so I thought). My plan was to replace a couple of components and drop in the really good op-amp and make it more like an 808. I found a TS9 on ebay for $70 and bought it. When it arrived I opened it up and was surprised to see that the board looked nothing like any of the pictures I had found and it had the really good op-amp. Maybe I missed something in my research. I will never know. Whatever the case, I closed the TS9 up and left it just like it was.

    Awesome, Marty. I run both. TS9 as the pre (front) overdrive at the start of my pedal chain to push the downstream effects when I want. The 808 as post (end). This allows me to stack them with each other (thank you, SRV!) or with the pedals in between. I like the 808 at the end because it simulates an overdriven amp if I am playing clean but want to be able to get the full range of fuzz from my Fuzz Faces.

    Its just like choosing an amp or pickups. U want attack and clarity or sweeter tone. Actually you could choose based on what u have already. If youre tone is super sweet then maybe go with the ts9. If its bitey, the 808

    Ts9 sounds vicious through an amp cranked to where it breaks up.. roll the tone back to a hair before half with volume at about 3/4 and the drive at 1/4. You'll see what I mean lol.

    I've owned a few pedal's from that era. I could get pretty much any tone I was wanting depending on the circumstance, recording, playing live with a band or alone. I don't hear that much difference between the two that would be a deal breaker for me. I would like to try the same A/B test and fiddle with that tone knob. I had and original Marshall Guv'nor back then that was pretty cool. They are high dollar now too.

      I still have my Marshall gov’ner (sorry for misspelling) after all these 25 years...
      I hated the way the graphics on it looked... so I covered it in electrical tape except the Marshall logo.🤣🤣🤣
      But I loved the sound... so I kept it.
      I haven’t thought about that pedal in years.
      I’ll have to go find it and play it once more.👍💪

    Have owned a TS9 for a lotta years. I thought I'd like the TS808 MORE ,WITH ALL THE HYPE ON THE 808 . BUT hearing this shootout, I am really happy with my TS9.I'll keep it. If I find a real steal on a 808 I'd maybe buy it ,only if someone sold it for a blowout price. Ts9 over ts808 .

    In the first and third comparison the TS9 was set louder and that's why it sounds a tiny more trebly (any recorded track will sound more trebly if you raise its volume). In the second comparison the tone knob of the TS9 was clearly set higher than the TS808, so again it sounded harsher. Actually if you change those two output buffer resistors and convert a TS9 into a TS808 you gain a (very) tiny more presence, so the opposite of what you say at the beginning.

    Great vid. Debated this choice a while. Having many guitars, I'm glad I went TS-9. And I got it for $99 on SW. With humbuckers, you need that extra bite. Also, with my 65 Princeton and Strat, I'm very pleased. You can warm it up if you need to. You probably won't. P-90's? Hell yes TS-9 is a beastly combo with P-90's, bridge or neck. Cheers Marty!

    In the 80s, Ibanez pedals were considered 2nd best to Boss, believe it or not - I coudn't afford a Boss flanger, so I bought an Ibanez and excellent it was too! I remember guitarists with the TS9 - one band mate had a TS9 and a Big Muff plus a cheap MXR phaser going through a clean Peavey combo; hard to beat and not expensive at the time. Heady daze mate, heady daze. So, my verdict: The 808 is smoother and sweeter, so better for studio, but the TS9 will cut more when you're playing live. One of each then.

    I have a very old 808 that I’ve gigged with for decades, and use the
    TS 9 also. I play through a Twin, I mostly use them instead of a volume pedal for soloing. Way back there I used them with some flanger, I’m gonna say I prefer the 808 it’s never had any issues other than I hate the small switch. I’ve had two of the TS 9’s fail when they were relatively new. I also use the Ibanez Gem, it’s bad ass do a review on that one Marty
