    I absolutely agree with you. I use my SD1 in front of an overdriven Marshall for solo sounds. But what is really amazing: Whichever guitar you use, whichever pedal - it always sounds awesome!

    I’ve never understood the lack of love for the SD1, I’ve always preferred its slightly less ‘smooth’, “rockier” sound over the TS. Not sure how much of that is the asymmetrical clipping, or just a different tonal spectrum, but it’s great!

      It is definitely the asymmetrical clipping of the circuit. Tubes themselves naturally clip asymmetrically so the SD-1 is already technically closer from a sonic recreation standpoint. You are right sir!

    Couldn't agree more. The SD-1 is vastly underrated in my opinion.
    I find it much more useful than a tube screamer, even though they're similar. There's something the TS adds that I just don't care for.
    Anyone looking for it to push the mids, just take a look at the mid knob on your amp and give it turn clockwise 😄
    I also highly recommend the spark boost. I have the full size, which I got for the price of the mini during a sale at Sweetwater, and it's amazing. It has a level and gain knob, a bass and treble knob, and a 3-way mode switch with clear/mid/fat, which gives tons of tonal variation.
    Can use it as a straight clean boost, or frankly use it as a TS replacement all on its own. I prefer to use it to push my other drive pedals like you're doing here though, or just to rough up a good clean tone.

    I picked up the 40th Anniversary pedal not too long ago (would have gotten the classic as well, but that's what was in stock) and I like it to get certain sounds. Definitely worth the dough. I got it specifically to goose my Marshall JMP. Toss in a dash of delay and/or chorus and it's an 80's time machine.

    Wow! I actually just learned something from this video lol! I’ve been playing professionally for some years and I’ve always used a distortion pedal and a tubescreamer afterwards because that’s what everyone does for the most part. I had no clue I could just use a boost pedal and my OD of choice. You can set ya amp a lil dirty to get some dirt for stage 1, kick on the boss for rhythm and kick the boost for solos…definitely a great option. This will help me make more money now. Lol! Thank you!

    I came here to say that I have all 3 pedals plus more my Grandmother spoiled me. Tonight I tried most of them all. The SD1 was the winner by 1% as the main overdrive to push a Marshall 4010 JCM800’s and Jubilee studio. I have to admit that the Tube Screamer is creamier and smoother. The sound of the boss can be off-putting if you like that balanced chord strum. The asymmetric clipping indeed produces a raunchier sound. Ok, so I was A/B Ing them and ended up setting the TS into the boss. I tried the spark and arrows from EQD, and I don't know the best tone is rhythm with SD1 and engaging TS for lead that makes the sound so good. 😊 Spark is very flat basically only pushes the SD a little bit and Arrows has an interesting eq curve but can overdo some frequencies. The smooth push of the TS is the way to go.

    The funny thing is , The first Overdrive pedal I ever bought was a Boss sd-1. Much Later I bought a cheap ( TO-800 ) and oddly I just found out they sound pretty similar. The TO 800 has a different thing for spicing up cleans with a very small amount of drive that the ad-1 just does not do but when the drive is up they are almost the same and I also have the Tc Boost so this was extra cool for me. I happen to have a fuzz pedal that is in the way..but it turns out that when the sustain is turned way down it also has a nice overdrive sound that mix's well with my normal set up.

  • @ericolson8016
    @ericolson8016 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yep, the Boss SD-1 is the champion of all drive pedals into a Marshall, Laney or Vox. The pedal gets inhaled into the circuit of British type amps like nothing else.. A tube screamer into a Fender amp is wonderful too.... Whatever works for you, there's no rules to find your tone.. Boutique pedals are great too and I've had hundreds (it's an illness). In my old age the SD-1 is what I lean on most.. A good klon/klone is a fun pedal too, but if you play hard or punk rock the SD-1 is the king/queen....

    The SD-1 just sounds so much raunchier and more alive even though the difference is kinda subtle, the TS seems to filter off the end subtley(or maybe the Asymmterical clipping generates a little more high end) and a bit too much low end - great for a specific kinda almost lo-fi effect but you can kinda get that with the SD-1 with the tone knob up. Maybe in a mix I'd have more trouble telling them apart(aside from the extra gain) but played like this you'd have a much easier time selling me the SD-1 as an actual amp or ironically, tube-based.
    The SD-1 rules for "Classic Metal", it was the one pedal that worked with my Vox AC4TV back when I had one too, and also helping get those QOTSA vibes

    There's a lot of folks here that apparently don't understand what a Tube Screamer is used for. It should be used to either push you amp, or pair with your favorite overdrive to push it so your solos to cut through the mix with the midrange hump. It gives just enough extra magic to make your tone sing. Other drives can pull it off, but he Tube Screamer is famed for doing it so well. SRV, John Mayer, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Marcus King, Gary Moore, and on and on. It's personal preference really. What do your ears like. Dude here could ditch that spark, and put the Tube Screamer in front of the SD-1. I guarantee it would yeild a good result.

    I've got an original SD-1 from the 80's that I am using together with a CS-2 compressor. Gives it a lot more oomph and sustain when needed. I replaced this couple of pedals alternatively with a SuperSigna from CmatMods: a great double OD/Boost pedal, 3 clipping modes, 3 band EQ, independent Boost. For me, it's the holy grail of pedals: if there's only one, that's the one I would keep. In fact I have 2 just in case anything goes wrong, as these are not being produced anymore.

    I play a Marshall JCM 900 and a JCM 2000 and both I run through a Friedman Buxom boost and then I switch out between a boss sd1, Mosky Silver Horse, and a Behringer vintage tube overdrive 0800. I play simple 90's Era pop and skate punk (all rhythm) so nothing fancy but I like messing with different tones. Each pedal work's well with the amps OD channel but if I want a super saturated sound I'll combine either OD pedal with the Friedman and it kicks it up a notch. I think what gets me the most high gain saturation is the Mosky Silver Horse believe or not. Also that Mini Spark works really nicely for bass, I was running a Hartke LH500 head with a Hartke preamp pedal and then the Spark and man did it make that amp sound nice, now I run a Gallien-Kruger RB700 paired with an MXR Bass DI preamp

    They sound basically the same except the tube screamer has Les gain and seems a bit more mellow. I kinda liked the boss pedal more.

    Another great video Paul. Wondering if you still prefer the sd 1 over the overdrives in the gx 100? Great playing btw and the Tele sounds great!

      Cheers Gary, it’s a subtle thing but yes I do. Even with the Axe Fx I still use real drives, I feel it helps with all modellers.

    WOW...with all knobs at 12 O'Clock, SD-1 is crunchier than TS pretty significantly! 👌🏻

    Is it possible to get classic SRV-style tones with a SD-1 as well as a Tube Screamer?

    • @MikeCarvin
      @MikeCarvin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea but less SRVish than TS9, I'm afraid. Still works, but SD1 is better for humbuckers.
      When it comes to strats with just single coils, TS9 is better.

    SD1 all day. Bought one as a new guitarist, hated it, sold it. Grew up, played many pedals and realised that used right the sd1 is a class act.
    Personally not a tubescreamer guy, the sd1 is my winner. And it remains a mainstay on my board, as a gain boost 👌
