This is a critical market for automakers and an increasing numbers of consumers. As Car Confections points out so well, price and features as well as warranty are exactly what the well informed buyers in this segment are valuing. Great clear comparison...AGAIN.

I'm currently in the market for a new car. After looking at several other brands, my last two are in fact Honda CRV and Toyota Rav4. I congratulate you for this excellent video. It certainly touches most of the important aspects. One that was not mentioned is the fact that Honda CRV opens the four doors almost to 90 degrees while no other car does the same. I've notice this aspect absent from all of the reviews that I have been watching. This is very important to those families that have baby strollers or even those individuals with some sort of mobility issues as it happens with my wife.

Great video comparison. Love the split screen and how you went back and forth with each comparison. Kept me engaged and I didnt feel lost or forget key points that matter to me. I've had my Element for almost 15 years and I'm interested in something new and was thinking CRv until the new Rav4 came out. Now I'm leaning more toward Rav4 Adventure. Thanks again for this video!

You did a great job ! I have a 2021 CRV and i love it. What you didnt talk about was the efficacy of the AWD and the CRV has a more responsive less spinning on its AWD than the RAV 4 which might in fact of brought it to equal or more in points.

He also didn't mention that the CR-V has LED front and rear turn signals, and the CR-V should have been awarded another half point for pricing and rain sensing wipers. It would have won with both of our analysis' added up. I feel this comparison was very biased towards the Toyota.

It failed to mention that the Honda's rear doors open all the way but the Toyota Rav 4 doors open about 90%. Not leaning towards either but this is what I found when looking at them both. It also doesn't mention that the Honda has a switch from the hatch that can be pulled to fold down the rear seats while the Toyota doesn't.

I’d lean strongly towards the Toyota for a few reasons:
    1) I suspect the Honda’s smaller displacement turbocharged engine won’t hold up as well as Toyota’s larger, naturally aspirated one over time.
    2) The Toyota’s AT will most likely be longer-lasting and more reliable than the Honda’s CVT.
    3) The RAV4’s 2019 restyling means it no longer looks like a mommy car, while the CR-V still does.

I've heard of some problems with Honda's 1.5L turbo engine, something about gas or oil mixing. As far as transmission longevity, that's hard to say. I've had a toyota AT and a Nissan CVT, and have so far liked both.

The 2017-2019 Honda CR-Vs have experienced gasoline contamination of the engine oil due to an issue with the the new dream works 1.5 liter turbo engine design. This also creates an in cabin gas fume issue. Please do not buy!

I really like the Rav4. Shame that my grandmother needed a new car before the 2019 came out, but she bought a 2018 Rav4, which is awesome as well. Big issue with the CRV. The 1.5 Turbo that is on 3 of the upper trims, so on most CRVs, has a MAJOR oil dilution issue that they have yet to recall or fix. We will see if 2019 is different. Since this car would replace my grandmothers Camry, which she got rid of because of the oil consumption problem, this kept us from even looking at the CRV. The reason why we still looked at the Rav4 although her Toyota has that oil issue, was because Toyota admitted the mistake and recalled it. Sadly, she was not eligible for the recall. This is why Toyota is my FAVORITE overall brand, next to Kia and Chevrolet.

I have a 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and have test driven many gasoline only 2019 RAV4's while waiting for my Hybrid. In my experience the CVT that Toyota has put in the Hybrid is much better than the 8 speed automatic that is standard in the non-hybrid version of the RAV4. It delivers power smoothly and effortlessly under all conditions without the constant upshifting and downshifting that is very noticeable in the 8 speed. Toyotas CVTs are extremely well designed, well integrated and reliable.

I don't like how you gave The Rav a half a point for 19 inch wheels that can be added to the Honda, but later, when you pointed out stuff the Honda has standard, but you can to buy the option on the Toyota, you didn't give Honda points. I have been driving Honda’s since 1996, and have a 2009 CRV EX-L with 111,000 miles. My wife’s 2006 Accord, I sold at 170,00miles & it was still going strong, but started to have problems, being 70 years old I sold it. I looked at purchasing a new CRV for her but the CVT trans and small engine turbo was just too new for me to swallow. I purchased. 2017 RAV4 XLE, 2 wheel drive. In 2017 the RAV4 came with many safety features that weren’t available in the CRV in this level range, but could be purchased for thousands more. Honda fell analeptics. The Toyota is as good if not better than the Honda. With the regular engine, no turbo and regular transmission, my wife getting about 25% better mileage than my CRV. In 2009 I paid $26k for the CRV, it does have 4wd. In 2017 I paid $26.1k for the Toyota RAV4. My wife is happy with her RAV4. Jim
PS......I live in the Chicago area, my CRV ‘s 4wd has kicked in once in the 10 years I’ve had it, what a money make for the mfg. look at what you get, this is nor what it’s made out to be.

If you had used the hybrid Rav4 Limited instead it would have completely destroyed the Honda!!! 41 mpg in the city, 230 hp vs 204 in gas version of Rav4 and much quieter! And more standard safety features.

I got a lower trim level 2019 RAV4 (XLE) this week and am loving it! Even if it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that the limited AWD in this video does, it still feels premium. I don’t have anything bad to say about CR-V as I know there’s a lot of people that love it but I did test drive it and found that I just liked the Toyota better.

I was the same way. The CRV had so many perks for the cost that the Rav either didn’t have or you had to pay way more, but the Rav just had a much better feeling for me. It felt more like a truck as opposed to a van. That’s the only way I could describe the feeling. It just felt younger and more rugged while the CRV felt more soccer mom/dad ish.

Great job putting this together! My money would go to the Rav4 and mostly because of the powertrain. It’s cool that you can get a bunch of extra features in the Rav but dang, they should be included for that price! Can’t imagine spending nearly $40k on a compact crossover.

It boils down to a few things. I’ve owned both. Traded crv after 7 months due to few issues. Gas leaking into oil, car wouldn’t warm up in Minnesota winters. At stoplights the temp gauge dropped to zero everytime and blew cold air. That and it’s very mini van/soccer mom. It had to go. I got the rav because I loved the truck look. It’s definitely not soccer mom. I’ve got black rims and black emblems on charcoal gray paint. I love the transmission and drive. I just am night and day happier after switching. Take that for what you will, and I was a strictly Honda guy since 2007.

They are both quite noisy in their own way. It depends whether you can tolerate whines better or roars better. Neither are any where close to the notion of refined. Honda also has a slightly stiffer ride, if you enjoy feeling every bump. The cars are made for picking up n the kids from school. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to buy one or the other, because the others are worse in their own way.

These two are on my short list. It will probably come down to the test drive as I haven't driven either. Also add the 2019 Subaru Forester and Mazda CX-5. On paper, the CR-V EX-L has a couple features that the RAV4 and Forester don't unless you go up to the Limited trim on the RAV4 or the Touring trim on the Forrester. That is the memory driver seat and the rear area handles/buttons to fold down the rear seat. On the Subaru, both only come on the Touring. On the Toyota, the memory driver seat comes on the Limited only. The button for the rear seat is not available on any trim level. For me, I have to fold the rear seat down almost every day for work. So that's a consideration. And I like the memory seats since my wife and I both will drive the car regularly. Honda gives a lot in that EX-L trim price range. The Mazda is nice too with a smaller cargo area than the other three. I like that 800 Watt JBL stereo on the RAV4 but it will cost to get it.
