We pulled some videos from TH-cam that contained divers who panicked under water so we could react live. Woody hadn't seen these videos and his reaction is priceless!

    Video #1: • Diver Panic
Video #2: • Scuba Diver Panic
    Video #3: • mask squeeze

When I was 12 my parents took us to Mexico, me and my dad did the class in the pool and it was no prob. When we got to the spot my dad jumped in then I jumped in. I wanted to float on the water and get used to being in the ocean which is scary. The instructor swims over deflates me I don’t have my regulator in and I’m sinking. So I freak out trying to stay a float. Could have been an amazing experience but the instructor didn’t give me the time to go at my pace . At the end everyone was on the boat he went around and congratulated everyone then got to me and told me how disappointed he was with me . I said well if you hadn’t forced me to go under the water before I was ready I would have been fine.

I think she just panicked and he was trying to get her to work through it and solve the problem. She had calmed down, he thumbed the dive and when he turns around she had spit out her reg and torn the mask off. Then he immediately tried to put his reg in her mouth and help her ascend. Here's why she pulled off her mask and regulator.... when you aren't used to having anything on your face... and you have a panic experience, you can't breathe, Instinct is to remove anything from your face... any impediments to that have to go away. Not logical, but instinct is like that and divers learn to feel their breathing gear and mask as safe places but she has not learned to feel them like safety. To her they were impeding her breathing and vision.

    • @dawsonje

She was too uncomfortable in open water to perform this skill without panic. After the fist few unsuccessful attempts to clear the mask she needed to be calmly taken to the surface (not forcibly restrained and kept underwater by the instructor) and retrained on this skill in the pool prior to returning to open water.

This is a very insightful comment. As someone with zero diving experience I never considered the perspective that the mask and gear is your safe place underwater. I have been a professional tree climber for 20 years and the feeling of being totally safe and secure on my rope in the treetops is similar to this... most people balk when I talk about climbing and working 150ft up in a tree, but the reality is that it doesn't matter how high you go once you've learned to trust your ropes and equipment (and learned your limits, of course). My harness and rope provide my safe place. Never thought to make that comparison before - thank you!

When I did my CF1, my instructor basically did the same thing the instructor in the beginning did. I could not read him, I started to panic after a while, was overweighted and he even started to pull me back down as soon as I decided to just go up because he would not let me and we were not even deep underwater. I was 14 y/o at the time and it was the beginning of me having panic attacks regularly for maybe one year. Since I watch your videos I know now it was not only me not being able to calm myself, but it was the need of mine to just have somebody with me whom I can trust to read me and keep the clear mind if I lose it. Him pulling me back down on my leg was just scary. It took me a while to go back into the water. Thank you for your very helpful videos. Keep up the wonderful work. I think people get confused when their mask is full of water. They can panic from feeling like they can't breathe even though they can breath with their mouth and clear with an exhale from the nose, and I get it because I had that feeling the first time. This is one of those skills that Woody is right, needs to be mastered at the surface because it's hard to communicate to someone who can't see or hear you. I've also had the feeling of urgency to get to the surface when I became exhausted underwater from exertion. I felt like I couldn't get enough air, but I knew that I needed to relax myself because I imagined if I had been in a cave. I knelt at the bottom and focused on calming myself and controlling my breathing until I calmed down and could continue the dive.

I seriously think that whoever wants to start diving with scuba should first properly learn how to snorkel. Most of these basic problems and panic would never happen that way. Even if your mask is just gone you're not in a serious problem as long as you don't panic.

There is a phisiological response in the human body when water enters the nose, making it to stop breathing.

@@l3lackoutsMedia I'm not sure about snorkeling. Having proper free diving training (where you learn, how to breath properly) will help you with air consumption, but I'm not so sure that anything else really transfers to scuba diving. But you are right that one of the most important realizations you need to ingrain into your brain is the knowledge, that as long as you have a working reg in your mouth (and you aren't doing stuff you are not trained for), nothing bad is going to happen to you.

I'd posit that you don't need an air supply to master basic mask skills and get used to some water in your nose AND ears... It's kind of silly just how mundane and little a sensation can be so annoyingly distracting, but once you've got tanks on and you're deep, you don't want or need to get distracted on "stupid stuff"...
There may not be a whole lot that transfers from snorkel to scuba, but what there is CAN be learned in a considerably safer and more discrete circumstance with a mask, a pair of fins, and an ordinary swimming pool... at least to the minimal degree.
Then, once you've knocked the novelty off the whole weightless drifting sensations and general condition of being underwater, you can put on tanks, inflators, weights, and step up the game...
In motorcycles (my passion activity) we don't advise anyone just run out and buy a 1000cc Supermoto... It's an open invitation to disaster. Even the MOST responsible among us is prone to "mischief" once in a while, and on a monster like that as your first bike, you'll get killed rather than learn any better... There's no good (as a noob' at anything) to come of making the beginning any more difficult or complicated than it has to be. SO get a 250cc ish Cruiser and just enjoy riding the damn bike for a while... THEN get into the drills and building good habits and all... You've already got to worry enough about using technique JUST to stop without falling off or dropping the bike... Why add to that???
Same thing here... JUST take a mask into a pool and fill it with water... and practice clearing it. Take a breath, duck down and clear it... and repeat.. Same for the other skills... JUST focus on this part for the beginning... Once that muscle memory is down to where it's actually hard for you to screw up and get water up your nose or freak out and possibly drown... THEN worry about more sophisticated or difficult "advanced" stuff. ;o)

A personal story - during my confined water dives I struggled mightily with a panic reaction during the mask skills section. I got through the skills but only barely. The instructor stayed with me after class and in about 15 minutes of practice I was swimming laps underwater with no mask and just the reg in. Just taking the time to show your brain that, in spite of instinct, it will actually be ok if your face feels flooded - as long as the reg is in. Open water cert dives were easy after I got past that initial fear reaction

I feel that. When I first started out, my instructor wasn't very clear on clearing water from the mask. Just watching this brought back panic memories. I wish I would have had you guys as my instructors back in the day. To be honest after watching your videos, I feel that I was a bad diver for my first few years. It wasn't until I was living on the coast and diving quite regularly with dedicated divers did I get my confidence. I love your videos and hearing you guys and remembering my instructors, night and day. Please keep up the excellent work with your videos. Like I said I wish I had your videos back in 1983.

When you have a panic attack, the last thing you want is something to be on/stuck to your face.
And she was having so much trouble breathing WITH the regulator, that she probably thought the only thing that could help her was fresh air out of the water.
I think that in her mind, she was getting rid of hindrances that were only making her ascent more stressful. Like: "This regulator is doing nothing for me anyway, I just need to get this stuff off my face, and get out ASAP!"
Logic flies out of the window.

Once I finally start getting training, I’m bracing for the inevitability that I won’t get a diving instructor that is as clear and understanding when explaining things. I’m autistic and it’s hard for me to find teachers of any kid that really “click”. The way you guys teach is so accessible that it clicks with both neurotypical people AND people like me!! That’s so awesome.

I remember reading a book when I was about 8 years old (Christopher Pike yessss)where the characters go scuba diving. In the book, the “diving instructor” character gives the advice to the main character on how to clear her mask. I have never been scuba diving unfortunately, snorkeling only😢 , but the knowledge of how to clear a mask has been drilled into my head since reading that book😂. That one guy needed it (and the first woman!)😂

The lady that ripped the mask off of her face did it because she was having a panic attack. I don't dive but I do have ptsd and panic attacks. Very often when I have a panic attack I will remove anything near my face. I've torn off my hat, necklace, scarf, sunglasses, and have even ripped off my shirt because I feel like my breathing is being restricted. It's a panic reaction. Of course removing those things isn't going to help you breath any better but in the moment you feel like you're just trying to do anything you can to get air. This is why even though scuba diving looks like a lot of fun I will not do it unless I somehow get my ptsd and panic disorder under control. I can imagine how deadly it could be for me or anyone to have a panic attack like that while diving and because I can't control the panic attacks I feel it would not be smart for me to try scuba diving. I'd like to know your thoughts on people diving who have panic disorders.

I took a scuba class years and years ago. We practiced the mask clearing thing in a pool, I was just sitting down. As best as I can remember, I never really “got it”, and was ALWAYS uncomfortable underwater (and that was just a pool). On our scheduled certification class off a boat, somewhere out in the Gulf, something happened in my life and I had to cancel. I never tried again - and glad I didn’t. I was just not cut out to be a diver. BUT, sure love these videos. 😊❤️

My gosh the second video gave me major anxiety when she took her mask and breather away. The awful thing about actual panic attacks is that you become kinda irrational and stop caring about your surroundings, having a pa underwater can be a big problem. I felt so much for that girl, she definitely needed more training on how to act in the scenario of an emergency. But knowing that might have been overweighted by the instructor makes me furious cause this part wasn't her fault.

The first time I saw a full blown panic was from a dive guide on the surface while waiting to get back on the boat. It was in Fiji above a dive site called The Supermarket. The guide was a rather large local whose voice went up several octaves and had developed those crazy eyes. He said that there is a very large Tiger 5m below us cruising back and forth. He didn't wait for the ladder to clear, he went back into the boat straight over the side weights, tank, and all.

I did the classes and dove a bunch of times with my father when I was a teenager. Luckily nothing bad ever happened to us and we had quite a rigorous training in case it did but listening to the stories on this channel made me realize how much more dangerous diving is than I ever thought when I was doing it. Humans are not meant to be 30 meters under water any more than they are meant to be 30 meters in the air - in either cases if sh*t goes south it can very easily be a bye bye... Have fun and make sure to find some proper instructors!

After this I practiced with snorkel and mask until I could stand the water without the mask.
    But the fear remained forever.
I was able to clean my mask and even managed the Advanced in the end, but I was never able to remove the mask deeper than one meter under water again.
I don't dive anymore now, it's probably better that way... I've never forgotten that panic.

I have 110 dives. I am a PADI Master Scuba Diver and SDI Solo Diver. When I first learned to dive, I struggled massively with buoyancy. I couldn't understand that my lung volume influenced my position in the water. I had to repeat my pool seasons twice, and going on three times. I decided to quit and try again later. I did not at al struggle with mask clearing or regulator recovery. I thought that both scuba instructors for my initial open water training were pretty lousy. They never fully explained why we needed to do the skills. They just demonstrated the skills and asked us to repeat them back.
The second time that I learned to dive and passed. I only put one puff of air into my BCD. My instructor gave me a 4'11, 120 woman with a 3mm wetsuit, 16 pounds for the ocean. I was constantly kicking and kicking fast to stay off of the bottom. We did no weight checks. I confronted my instructor about being overweighted. He gaslit me. I think it took about 12 dives for me to learn that I needed more than one puff of air to achieve neutral buoyancy. I now dive ten pounds with a 3mm wetsuit in the ocean. I feel that I could go down lower, but the Sea of Cortez was very salty.

I was the unflappable student that knew the whole manual by heart and passed every test on the first try, it was to the point that my instructor would ask the class a question, point to me and say "NOT YOU!". That being said, all of that swagger and knowledge would have flown out the window if I had to do open water in the Sea of Cortez, the thought of diving in great white infested waters terrifies me. You are way braver than I am. And yeah, it sounds like your instructors sucked.

Also, when I dove, for the rest of the night I couldn't keep my balance afterwards, on land, I think due to the waves on the boat, but I'm not sure why.

Totally agree to the instructor on the left of the screen. I was diving instructor myself. Experienced some situations myself in teaching. Did see a lot of **** with other diving instructers, too. Best regards.

I could never scuba dive myself as I already have a huge fear of drowning, not breathing cause I suffer from asthma already. I have had enough scares when I don't have my inhalers and almost passed out from lack of oxygen when heading to the hospital. I am naturally a very panicky person in general with many things in my life, however, I have such admiration, and fascination with scuba diving, whether deep diving, cave diving, free diving, etc. This is the closest I will ever get to having the diving experience by watching these videos. I truly appreciate the knowledge you provide about diving. Love this channel.

Ok, watching Woody and Gus in this video has killed me dead. It’s 1 a.m. and I am trying so hard not to laugh loudly in my house.
Woody, trying to hold back hysterical laughter, says to Gus, “Gus we really should not be laughing. I feel bad for this guy.”
His eyes were so bugged! Hilarious. Poor guy.

So glad I found this channel! (Found it from a TH-cam comment on Blue World, a vid about cave diving safety and the guy who wrote the book on it, so someone pointed to your reaction to the documentary reenactment of him and his buddy nearly running out of air. I'm *not* a diver, but I loved freediving to the bottom of the pool as a kid, so I may give SCUBA a try once I confirm my eardrums are okay for it. (One of them feels slightly off even tho my hearing is fine, so I worry a bit about the pressure. I've been fine on planes though, but that's not any guarantee).
