Breeding quails with all these videos from Terry. It's so easy even a cave man can do it!!! I've saved more than 15% on time and $ by watching these videos.
I'm glad Stromberg's added free shipping ($100+) to their website, because the shipping costs on those feeders was way too much. I used this video and the comments on it to make my design. I used 1x1 vinyl 90 degree corner strips along the trough area. The sides are bent straight and the front is bent to around 110 degrees. I made my own welded wire to go on top of that, which is .75" x 1.5" and 18ga. The welded wire is also at a 22.5 degree angle so they can't stand on it. With this setup, they can't rake the food forward or shake it out along the edge of the trough. It works in grow out cages too. I haven't seen any feed on the poop trays.
I use similar metal J-feeders as well. I love that you can put labels on the feeders. I've found that using magnets with the info attached work best for me. I can easily move the magnets around if needed and easy to take off when I'm cleaning the feeders. Great videos! Thanks for putting the work into sharing your experience and knowledge. It is appreciated!
Love your video. It inspired me to use a j feeder for my cage and also modified it a bit. I added a rectangular plastic bottle at the top to increase the feed capacity and to also see if the feed is getting low since the plastic bottle is transparent.
Glad I saw the video on j feeder modification because my quail want to sit on the feed and eat and scratch the food out and then it's not available for them to eat right now my cage's are outdoors so my free range chickens will eat what falls but it means feed cost for the quail is higher from the spilled feed my cage's already had j-feeders from the rabbits that were in them when I got the cage's
I followed your lead on this with the exception that I used 1/2" by 1" wire and trimmed up the openings to make them 1" by 1" and it has been working wonderfully. I've got a few birds that still waste a fair amount of feed, but there's been a significant reduction in their wasted food collecting underneath the feeders. Thanks for sharing this idea!
Great mod, Terry! I combined your mod with a "feed flow restricting baffle" mod I saw over on fellow Tuber Aloha Quails. His video is titled "No waste quail feeder. Is it possible ? YES" If you fiddle with the size of the gap enough, the amount of feed that accumulates in the trough of the feeder can be significantly reduced but is ever present due to the quail agitating the feeder. My feed waste is almost nothing now. Thanks again for the great videos and timely responses to questions!
I was just watching another quail feeder design video and I thought it was perfect lol. This seems even better if you have stacked cages. Thanks for sharing. Janice

Thank you... really appreciate your videos... always can use great ideas !
I'm thinking instead of using the cage wire to create slots, what about using a piece of plastic and cut small circles out of it ? Just like one of those round brooder feeders. Wonder if they'd still be able to fling feed around with that.
Hey there, I really appreciate all that you have shared from which I have learned much. I have a question: What size J FEEDER is suitable for 6-10 birds? I just purchased one on Amazon and when it arrived I thought, it's too small. The entire unit is just 5 inches left to right; the hopper is 5-6 inches tall x 3 inches deep, front to back. It's hard to gage how much food this will hold and how long it can be expected to last before refilling is needed. You stated yours is 7 inches in this video. how many birds is yours feeding?
Great info. I'm going to copy this template for outdoors. Do you think 1/2" mesh to cover the top will prevent outdoor animals from stealing the food from the j feeder?
Terry, Hey there again. I've watched your multi-level cage build video for the shorter length versions, but the LONG cages to which you attached this feeder is what I really want to build (I've got a 21 ft wall and a 13 ft wall for my cage positions). I'm dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to cutting and building things; theory doesn't do me squat, if I have the numbers written down in front of me, so that I know what specific lengths and widths to cut (for the frame, the Poop Tray supports, and the Egg Roller Shelf (I'm STILL a bit 'iffy' on the proper angle to cut for that sucker...I think you said 4 degrees, but I wasn't sure), THEN it's just like a big jigsaw puzzle that makes sense (I can look at the paper I've written noting each piece, so that part A goes 'here', and part B attaches to part A x number of inches down the length of part A (ie, the support braces for the 'flooring' for each level). But in my head, when I'm just thinking about it, only SOME of it makes sense and I get easily lost......3 D was never my strong suit: if it's on paper, with the measurements, I can build it, but that's the only way that works for me. I've looked online for free cut list programs and I can't find one that shows me what I need, just the numbers but none of them are attached to what those numbers refer to at all. Like I said, I'm dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to this stuff....Abstract Construction just doesn't gel with me. Don't get me started on wiring; I stay as FAR AWAY from wiring as I possibly can. Anywho, thanks for your hard work on the videos, and you've just solved the Feeder issues for me......I love your mods on the feeder, easy peasy, should preclude most waste issues (can't stop it 100% with any bird). Do they make a longer feeder, so that the feed hopper lasts longer between refills? Lastly, I've been looking at DuMor and Purina Wild Game Feeds. The DuMor offers Medicated and non-Medicated, while the Purina seems to offer 3 varieties of Game Bird Chow. The DuMor hovers around 24% protein, while the Purina offerings come in at 30%. The DuMor is a bit cheaper (under $2.00 less), but that extra 6% protein seems like a wise choice from chick stage up to 10 weeks when they become adults. I figure I could switch over to DuMor 24% at that stage (non-Med so it doesn't affect the eggs), as I'll be feeding them meal worms I raise, along with Barley/Wheat Fodder. (and providing Grit for digestion as well, witih the 'live' food I'll be feeding). Thanks again. Stay safe. Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
Great tip, was searching for a way to make less waste feeder for the stacked cages i'm building now. I have some questions : what measurement do you recommend for the coated hardware cloth in the floor ? Note i only have metric sizes and want to get the best footing and waste dropping rate. What is slope angle for the eggs to roll out fast and safe, my cages are 2 feet deep x 3.3 feet wide What is the best height all in all between the sloping floor and the feeder so my eggs can come out easily + the quails don't have a problem reaching feed?
14 mm X 14 mm on the hardware cloth. For the slope I use a 2" drop in 2 feet. My feeders are approximately 5" off the floor of the cage. Good luck and thanks for commenting.
@@CoturnixCorner this was helpful and very close to what i was planning usually i ask here bcz i get the simple right answer not rocket science complications. Thank you
Hey buddy, love your videos. Just a quick question. I have built my quail cages like yours but outside. Are these J feeders water proof or if not do you know of any waterproof feeders? Cheers
The J-feeders have an open top so water and pest can get in. They to make lids for them which will help keep out anything you don't want in there, including water.
Terry, I've seen daily feed consumption averages of 16 gm (.56 oz) to 60 gm (2.11 oz) per adult Coturnix quail. I'm trying to budget for feed costs but those figures are too varied. Wondering if you have calculated a daily/bird average feed consumption rate. Your information is considered gospel around here! Thanks!
Terry, Just starting all this. I know I saw a video before of the cages you have on the right being built but I don’t see it any longer. Could you repost again. Also is there a difference in what you use the cages on the right verses the ones on the left or is it just an evolution in your preference?

Terry, The Stromberg link is leading to a blank page. Can you let us know what model J-Feeder you are using here? I can't seem to find anything in the 11-inch range.
I did something similar! I tucked the front under the lip and push the back just below the bend with a tab out both end and bend them down so cant be pushed down!!
Hi Terry, how many 12 Inches j feeder do you recommend for 35 jumbo quails between 4 weeks and 8 weeks? I was planning to do one but from what I can see these guys eat constantly.
I did that with my J feeders and the stupid birds would still manage to rake back the feed and get it to fall out. My J feeders have a small lip in the front too... I used the tip from Aloha quails to narrow the aperture from the hopper using glued on cardboard. Only a small layer of feed would be dispensed to the feed tray with that modification and they couldn't rake it back. It worked until I used feed I got from a local mill. The feed was a little bit too moist, which caused it to not dispense properly. Once I tore off the cardboard, they were already back to raking the feed out.
I have noticed that I too get some waste even with this modification, although it is much less than with out. I tried the tip from Aloha quails also, it worked temporarily until the cardboard got flimsy. I am testing a metal baffle that can be pop riveted into the feeder. I'll let you know how that works out. Another thing that works pretty well is going to a pellet feed for all your adult birds, they don't seem to kick that out as much. Quail are just slobs, they always think there's a better piece of food below. Thanks for commenting!
@@CoturnixCorner I used an abandoned election sign instead of cardboard. And zip ties instead of cage wire since I didn't have any wire around. Turned out to be 1 of 2 feeder designs out of the 5-6 I tried that didn't waste food. Thanks for the info.
