  • A simple and inexpensive pvc watering system that you can easily build in one afternoon for your quail or other poultry. The materials needed are available at most big box home improvement stores with the exception of the poultry watering cups and t-fittings. Links to both below.

    PVC T-Fittings: amzn.to/34KP8eC

    The fittings for the bucket are a male and female adapter......the tees for the cups are 1/2 x 1/8 x 1/2 and you should use a female adapter with a threaded plug at the end of your cup line instead of a glue cap.....that way you can clean out the line without cutting off the cap.....otherwise a great system

    very nice setup and saves a lot of time.
    Using the compression connector is great idea, I was trying to think of something similar but cheaper and smaller.
    ball valve is sure handy to drain the system too. I'll follow your ideas but will put a screw off cap on a male fitting at the end of the rails.

    I use a union piece (I think that's what it's called) to attach to the bucket. I've never needed silicone to seal it. Also, I like the sturdiness of the pvc pipe. I'm using 1/4 and 3/8" tubing right now and it seems to have a lot of play and movement. Doing very well. I like your videos. I've recently created a self feeder that is working amazing. Contemplated J-feeders but, I think these hold more feed and only cost me

    Really liking your setup! For the height of the cup from the floor, I'm curious why 4" but not 3" or 2"? Is it to prevent the quails from jumping onto the cup? One TH-camr said that his quails had been sitting on the cups pressing onto the yellow trigger causing the whole tank of water to leak out. Would that be a concern for you as well? Just trying to think over all the details before building mine. Thanks!

    HELLO! My husband and I build your three cage enclosure with the egg roll floors. And I just recently built THIS watering system. I had some leaking issues due to not use enough glue, I fixed that but now my quail have not figured out how to peck the yellow piece in the watering cups and I have to push it and fill the little water cups for them. Have you had this issue before? If so, did your quail eventually figure out how to use the pecking cups?

    I've been binging on your videos today. Really thoroughly presented and good units. I have a question regarding your hutch. Why did you choose to have the doors swing up rather than down? If they go down, you wouldn't need the zip tie, would they? I'm going to start my quails in the beginning of April. I can't wait to put what I've learned from your videos in to practice. Thank-you so very much.

    • @troyalanr

      Most bird cages have a door that swings up because if you don’t get it latched good the doors weight keeps it closed, helping to prevent escapes.

      I glue all joints, although I did add a threaded plug at the ends of the water cup rail to aid in cleaning. You talked about using the quart waterer for your juveniles before they learn to use the cups. My quail seem to make huge messes with that style waterers. I can't figure out exactly how they're doing it. Is that unavoidable? Or do you have any tricks to prevent this? I'm in the process of building your 3 tier style housing. So I'll be doing this watering system once that is done. But in the meantime (and for future reference with the juveniles) I was just wondering if there was a way to stop mine from leaking out all of their water.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I place a 6" square floor tile with a paper towel over it in the brooder and place the waterer on top of it, this helps keep the chicks from kicking pine shavings into the waterer. Although, you still will get an occasional bird poop in the waterer.

    Fully automatic would be to run it straight to the water supply. Couple ways to do it, but pipe it up.

    • @CoturnixCorner

      That's normal, what they don't drink will evaporate pretty rapidly.

    Thanks for your guide. It's interesting to see you don't put any PVC cement on the down tubes. I assume it doesn't leak at those points?
    Also, I assume you fill the orange bucket up periodically using a hose? How often do you have to do this - how thirsty do they get?

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do use pvc cement on all the fittings. I usually fill the buckets every other day, as they drink quite a bit in the summer months.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robbphillip6663 That's the way they work. There is not water in the cup until the bird pecks at the yellow plunger, then it releases a little water for them to drink. When teaching them how to use it just use your finger to half fill the cup, by the time it's empty they will know how to use it.

    Have you considered using uniseals instead of bushings? They might be cheaper and easier for the build. I've used them for other projects with great success.
