I made a no-waste feeder out of a 1-foot section of 4" PVC pipe. I drilled eight, 1.25" holes, 1.5" off of one end. I installed a pressure test plug as a floor of the feeder. But the key of the feeder is the top of a 2-liter bottle that only lets food down into the base when the quail eat what is currently in the bottom of the feeder. It will feed eight quail at a time and won't allow the quail to waste food. Any food they sling stays inside the feeder. The materials cost for the feeder was less than $5 and it will hold nearly two quarts of food.

Awesome I think I am going to print some of these feeders with my 3d printer. It should be a easy design and print

Thank you Terry. Good video. Still haven't found decent design for our outdoor setup. Closest is son did gutter trough with wire ontop for 1 cage, works well, but we'd love figure out some kind of container that feeds into it. Staying away from anything on outside cages because of other animals/predators getting freebies.

I hear ya, a lot of people are still looking for a decent outside feeder that they can fill outside the cage.

Ever since I started feeding fermented feed and in partially closed feeders, food waste went from ~20% to almost nothing. As a bonus they overall eat a lot less. Probably saving like good third of feed budget this way.

Great video Terry, detailed and informative as always. Thank you. I think I'll try those trough feeders. Have you done a build video on the all wire cages shown in this video? I'm using the wood frame cages that you did a build video for quite a while ago, but I like the design of the all wire cages in this video. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks again for all of your great content.

I wish I could use open feeders as well. I have to snake proof the entire cage including the egg rollouts, therefore I have to use J feeders. Lots and lots of waste, I'm hoping that your tip of not pushing food down will eliminate that problem.

Hi Terry, Thank you so much for all your help with new comers to keeping quail. Where can I purchase the 36” trough style feeders? Thank you.

Nice Terry, unfortunately I can not use open feeders outside the cage as it attracts the wild birds into the barn.

@@CoturnixCorner I use to have open feeders on the outside of the cages, one day I walk around the corner and see the chickens jumped the fence and we’re going in to eat the quail food in the bottom cages. Add that to the wild birds flying in and out I just couldn’t win. 🤦‍♂️

Do Jumbos have any trouble getting their heads through the the 1x2 wire to get to the trough trays ?

Thanks Terry. Do you really need a feeder (Hatching Time type) to go all the way across the front of the cage? Is there a rule of thumb as to number of birds and length of feeder needed? I find that as long as my birds have not run out of food, they have no problem sharing a smaller feeder. I ask this as the shorter feeders are less costly. It is about saving money. Thanks.

Feeding Trough looks nice but I'd like to know how to build one like it cuz they are WAY over priced.

Looks like they are too deep. Can they eat all the food easily ? I’m looking for a good feeding system. Mine still have the baby feeder that looks like a flower and they waste about a 1/3c every day.

WalMart preys on the poor, the fixed income, the lazy, and the stupid.
With a little bit of effort a consumer can usually find a better deal than Walmart prices.
