    Our Quail story started Early In 2020. We hatched, brooded, and raised over two dozen quail...only to loose them all because the door was not latched 😞. We tried again and hatched 16 quail in July 2020. This has been an excellent adventure and we highly recommend anyone with space (which means you 😉 ) raise quail: they are tiny, fit anywhere, are fun to raise, and will help you get a little bit closer to self sufficiency!
    TOOLS AND SUPPLIES for our Easy Quail Cage With Egg Roll Out Tray :
    electric saw and screw driver/drill
    decking screws
    1/2 inch hardware cloth
    2 hinges (for the door) and a latch
    2 8ft long 2 x 4
    4 8ft long 2 x 3
    2 8ft long 2 x 2
    2 8ft long 1 x 2

    Excellent job and well built - It's also big enough to give them a sand bath - I use a seed tray with a cover to keep down the amount of sand scattered - with a hole at each end for them to enter and leave - I know they will probably lay some of their eggs in it but it does keep them healthy and mite free - I put in a little DE and grit to help with shell formation - they pick what they want out of it and it's all natural....!

    I like the design. Good job. Dewalt makes a 1/4 crown stapler just like your Brad nailer that anchors the wire down solid. A sand box for the birds keeps them occupied. For the cage the only real change I would make is to put the door in the center. So you can reach the whole cage more easily. I also cover the bottom third of the doorway with a piece of wood. Keeps them from hopping out but I can still reach everything well.

    quail eggs are much thicker than chicken eggs so there's less of a chance that the little eggs will crack hitting the wood but I guess if you're concerned about fractures when you're incubating, you could use a thin foam weather strip on the wood. Thanks for sharing your build.

    I like the design of the quail coop. However, its obvious they don't like the hardware cloth. Looks to be hard on their feet. I would love for hubs to make this for me but will have it sit on the ground to make it easier on their feet. This will also give the quail access to grass. I've had quail for almost a year and they don't have a dust bath in their current pen. They've never seem to need it. Thank you for the concept for the coop.💚

    Great video. Very nicely made. I am about ready to build my own. Watched a lot of quail hutch builds recently. Just curious everyone has a different design. Some fully enclosed, some with just a wind break. Is this just due to the weather where you live? Or more of a hide out from predators, safe space? Do they need it to breed? Thanks

    • @4KidsandaFarm
      @4KidsandaFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably has to do with the weather but quail also need some privacy to feel comfortable from predators. So a little of both...but preference for the human also has a lot to do with it. It can be easier just to nail up plywood rather than wrestle with hardware cloth 😊 hope that was helpful and thanks for taking the time to comment.
