In my experience I always use a slow retrieve. With multiple twitches. Also I'm using a tandem rig of gulp. I find multiple places in Galveston, that I can get really nice flounder. I've limited out on good keepers 16-24 in. doing this method. Just like specks if you miss them with the first one, you have the second one and BAM monsters. I've beat my beast ever, with 3 limits back to back to back. I'm using 3 in. Gulp glow in the dark shrimp with a chartreuse tail. By far the best bait I've found and believe me I've fished most of them.
Fished last 4 days. Day 2 and 3 we got a total of 6 flounder from 12" to 26". The big one was a monster! Great fish and even better stuffed with crabmeat and shrimp!
I don’t recommend using light line with flounder. Flounder love to hang out around structures and in areas where anglers get hung up. For that reason I recommend using a fluorocarbon leader (because it sinks and is abrasive resistant) of about 20-30lbs.
This is honestly the best video for flounder fishing. If you ever plan on catching flounder this is the most useful video. The only thing I would recommend for people who are very impatient is to get the Gulp Pearl White, just know that the tails would be ripped off pretty quickly compared to these ZMans, but you get quicker bites because the Gulp just has that quick but very weak tail.
Thank you so much,I wached this video 20 times and I follow all the tips and finally today I got my fist flaunder my 7 years old is the happen kid in the world because he had a good dinner
See John skinner for some flounder prowess. There are good reasons to fish a teaser a foot or two above the jig. No reason it wouldn't work down south.
My best 2 flounder soft plastics for flounder are a Gulp Alive Shrimp(Natural) or Zman Paddlerz Swimbait( Slam Shady)... always produces if fish are around.
Love the tips and I've honestly tried using the ones in this video several times throughout the spring and summer of 2024 and didn't get a single bite what so ever until I took off the fake baits and put on some natural habitat baits. Instantly started catching keeper flounder. Maybe it's just where I fish they just only like the stuff that they eat everyday. Not trying to diss on your video at all just saying what happened to me and my buddies when we tried any kind of lure and/or fake bait.
Good advice but I do wonder if we should be using soft plastics that are biodegradable ? I worry about how much plastic is ending up in our waterways. Any comment? Like your videos and try to adapt for my situation here in Oz. Carol, Sydney kayak fishing gal from Australia
We fish between 7 to 14 miles of Delaware and we use a top and bottom rig spro on bottom and glass minnow at the top for a teaser we use the gulp grub 5 inch which is killer on faster tides I would recommend for ocean excursions
Wyatt, love your material. I am a kayak fisherman and live in Fayetteville. Caught 12 flounder and 2 trout on Monday close to where you fished in this video. Biggest flounder was 23 inches and the biggest trout was 26 inches. Used 5 inch dieZel and paddlerZ in slam shady color. Would like to connect if you have time.
Ever since I was told to twitch twitch reel slow let it sink repeat I've been on em! Caught a 9.4 lbs 28 inch one the other day once in a lifetime fish
I live in the bay area on the Richmond bridge I catch a lot of flounder, halibut.leapord shark, and striped bass the way you explain it is really accurate thanks
Great video, love the Diesel Minnows. Just wish I could find a 1/4 oz jig head with a long shank so the hook would sit more to the back. Does anyone know of ewg jig heads with long shank?
It's surprising when using live baits anyway how even a small flounder will hit a large bait. They have huge mouths when they open it to get a meal. Thanks for sharing. I'm not a artificial fisherman inshore but only because I have never used them my confidence is with live mullet or pinfish. Jimmy Price flounder king loved jigs and artificials for flounder.
I grab tube worms off the side of the dock, cut them out of the tube then into pieces less than half an inch long and use them to catch surf perch in the marina, then I put the surf perch on weighted hook and drop it to the bottom and pull up ten feet and jig..... Except I don’t catch flounder that way, I catch Pacific Halibut... The Inside Straight rocks!
Flounder, fluke, sole, whatever they are considered, still part of the flounder fam, these fish are very aggressive when feeding and fishing for them. I've caught them on Buggs lures, on gulp, on D. O. A. Shrimp, even caught them on frayed string with smeared peanut butter. I don't think there's any type of special bait to use for flounder. I see as long as they're visible then their great bait. Tight line's never stop!
My largest Fluke/Flounder fell to a squid jig with a bergal fillet in Peconic Bay. It weighed in at 11lbs2oz. and it was taken on a 'dead-stick in the rod holder in about 60 feet of water. Often the wave action and the right rod(fast action) and braided line. Follow the squid, spearing, peanut bunker and especially in bays 'striped killie's' drifted or slow trolled. Catch them up folks!
Flounder will sometimes suspend right under a school of bait vs just laying on the bottom. You can even see them popcorn out of the water slapping the bait with their tail and then eating what they kill. They spin a circle slapping at the bait with their tail as well. When there feeding like this you can see the flounder nip at other fish competing for the same bait. Other times they will school right under fish busting bait and eat the injured ones that fall to the bottom. It just depends how hungry they are. When hungry there extremely aggressive and will chase down basically what they can fit in their mouth.
I limit out almost every time I fish flounder mostly in fall i won't keep them under 15 or 16 inches i fish in boat dockage areas deep side on moving water
I really found this video very intriguing. I fish the great south bay on long island, near the Wantagh bridge. The water depths are generally from 10 to 30 feet. Do you think this method works well I depths up to 30 feet? I already bought several of these jigs last year, but haven't used them yet. I normally use a 1 1/2 ounce to 3 ounce bucktail with a teaser tipped with gulp mullet. I jig from my boat 1 to 2 MPH drift speed. I generally do well but still would like to try something different. And I liked you're instruction of how to retrieve. Your thoughts on depth??? Thanks for a very well explained approach! Rick
Different opinions out there on setting hook hard vs feeling weight and simply lifting rod tip to apply pressure. Seems in this video you do the latter. Am I correct to assume no hard hook set? Thanks.
I noticed that. I give em the business and set the hook. If i didnt, i lost a lot of flounder at the boat or my feet. They seem to just open their mouth and drop it.
Idk if the flounder in the Southeast and East Coast are similar to that of those in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, but drop shots work great for flounder here. And by similar, I don't mean species, I mean eating patterns/behaviors.
What about location? I have never caught a flounder. Where i'm fishing in the Chesapeake Bay has striper, reds, specs and bait galore. It would seem likely that flounder are present right? I'm gonna check the other vid now.
I've been using the diesel minnow with the redfish eye on 15 and 30 pound braided line with liter and the line keeps breaking while bouncing if off the bottom. A few times at the jighead and a few times at the braid to liter knot. Any recommendations on line to use? Lost a doormat flounder right at my feet because the line broke
In my experience, short strikes like that are going to be either small fish or trash fish like pin fish or puffers. Keeper flounder will typically eat it pretty aggressively. I'm in the Florida Panhandle though so YMMV.
Thank you for putting together this great video! I'd like to know if everything shown in this video will work for catching "halibut" in the west/pacific ocean?? I believe they strike similar to the flounder. Thank you!
Great video! Wondering if the same baits and techniques will work here in San Diego. Won't say the word California because I know it's a bad one. What rod and reel setup are you using. Thanks again for the awesome tips!

@@robfish2303On your tandem do you use lead on both baits or just the lead bait?

can never stop watching this video.....always my go to vid when i target flounder.. great job...👍🙏
Sebastian inlet flounder season is right around the corner
Thank you so much,I wached this video 20 times and I follow all the tips and finally today I got my fist flaunder my 7 years old is the happen kid in the world because he had a good dinner
One of the best baits out there. For reds and flounder
Man Wyatt thanks for the way you showed the retrieve using your palm!
First time I've seen ur channel. Awesome video. I'll be subscribing. U speak clearly and ur vid is very informative. Killing the game!
See John skinner for some flounder prowess. There are good reasons to fish a teaser a foot or two above the jig. No reason it wouldn't work down south.
These catch and release guys crack me up. The best part of fishing is eating what you catch.
Appreciate the tutorial on the retrieve so many videos never show that, that’s the thing I question what I’m doing the most is how I’m retrieving
My best 2 flounder soft plastics for flounder are a Gulp Alive Shrimp(Natural) or Zman Paddlerz Swimbait( Slam Shady)... always produces if fish are around.
Great video. They don’t seem to like the paddle tails in the back bays in Delaware but have been loving the 5” gulp grub in pink shine lately

Thanks for the tips. I'll be taking my Dad down to the Crystal Beach, Texas area this Sunday. He loves to kayak fish in the backwaters there.
We fish between 7 to 14 miles of Delaware and we use a top and bottom rig spro on bottom and glass minnow at the top for a teaser we use the gulp grub 5 inch which is killer on faster tides I would recommend for ocean excursions
This is the perfect breakdown cuz I've been telling ppl the similar stuffs
Nice description and explanation , thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the support!

Great video. Flounder have always been a bi catch for me, cant wait to try these techniques. Thanks.
Love to see how you southern guys do it love from the northeast
Excellent video my friends appreciate the tips and tight lines
Great video, extremely informative and helpful. What would you suggest as the perfect rod for this technique?
Ever since I was told to twitch twitch reel slow let it sink repeat I've been on em! Caught a 9.4 lbs 28 inch one the other day once in a lifetime fish
Best breakdown I have seen!
Ok best flounder video I seen yet. Will use the bigger paddle tail salt strongs next time, with your twitch twitch rod/reel motion and thanks 🎣
Thanks for watching!
This was a good tutorial video, very detailed and engaging not boring & too wordy.
This is malarkey the best bait is your favorite bait period why it’s because the confidence you have in such bait
Awesome video and thanks for the tips🙏🏼👍🏼
That was a terrific explaination to target shallow water flounder that will work anywhere. Earned a new sub from nj.
5 in. White paddle . 🔥
I live in the bay area on the Richmond bridge I catch a lot of flounder, halibut.leapord shark, and striped bass the way you explain it is really accurate thanks

Excellent videos. I live on the body of water from the second spot and have caught a lot of trout from there as well. Very cool.
Great vid man

Well made vid, clear, helpful. Thanks!
Nice video. Good tips - explained well.

Gret video guys, gonna give it a try this week. Thanks

ives had pretty good luck using gulp jigging and a top and bottom style rig with silversides as bait
Those animations were top notch. Did Luke do those with Microsoft Paint? 🤣
I have always seen using a slow constant retrieval is the best way . Maybe being in a kayak makes it different.
Same here - on the Texas gulf coast. Like worming for bass in the summer.
Good stuff! I'll be trying this out this week 🤙
Would these lures work from piers. Great video
Thanks...and yes, they should be fine to use from a pier
i just purchased a lure called a flounder pounder. It is a double curly tail tube plastic with a pre rigged double hook. I am excited to try it
Very cool!
I use a lure called a flounder pounder" from walmart, best flounder lure I've ever found.
Just picked up this lure stoked to try it
chase downey the flounder pounder is a great lure

My favorite fish to target. Guess I will have to try this method out.
You need to do a video when fishing from a boat in ocean or bay when tide and wind come into play. Changes the whole technique.
We have tons of specific detailed content like that available for our members on our site!
I will definitely try this. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
Can this technique and retrieve be used on the surf? It's definitely a different angle than from a boat of kayak.
I limit out almost every time I fish flounder mostly in fall i won't keep them under 15 or 16 inches i fish in boat dockage areas deep side on moving water
Thanks learned something new👍
I really found this video very intriguing.

Your thoughts on depth??? Thanks for a very well explained approach! Rick
This guy’s video’s are very helpful just one comment, please slow down what is the rush? That a breath once in awhile, thanks
Thank you for checking it out!
was that mullet juice that was their?
Would this work for California halibut?
Do you recommend scent’s to this tails?
Adding scents would be fine
I was wondering what pound leader you would suggest running for these fish
Awesome tutorial thanks so much for this great info!! I’m rusty at fishing lol and wanted to take my grandsons fishing 🎣 this helped a lot!!! 😊🙏
Glad it was helpful!
What is the most popular color to use?
Where do you catch flounders these big??? I catch plenty here in Puget Sound (WAshington State) but not these size.
I'll be on the yak tomorrow. Let's see what I can do! Nice vid
What pound Tess were you using? Litter or no? Thank you for the video
Nice vid. How deep is was that water where you caught those fish?
Different opinions out there on setting hook hard vs feeling weight and simply lifting rod tip to apply pressure. Seems in this video you do the latter. Am I correct to assume no hard hook set? Thanks.
I noticed that. I give em the business and set the hook. If i didnt, i lost a lot of flounder at the boat or my feet. They seem to just open their mouth and drop it.
You have to let flounders chew on your bait just a tad bit, but I let it rip on em. Hard hook sets on flounder due to how their mouths are shaped
Would a drop shot be as effective and more efficient (no jigging just slow retrieving)?
Idk if the flounder in the Southeast and East Coast are similar to that of those in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, but drop shots work great for flounder here. And by similar, I don't mean species, I mean eating patterns/behaviors.
I like to use a similar rig and Every so often along the retrieve i pop it up to give it more action.
I use a dropper loop instead of a regular drop shot Palomar and it works great for me.
Will it work in California.
What about location? I have never caught a flounder. Where i'm fishing in the Chesapeake Bay has striper, reds, specs and bait galore. It would seem likely that flounder are present right? I'm gonna check the other vid now.
flounder are on the eastern side of the shore in all the back bays of seaside not many in the chesapeake anymore
Do u wait too set the hook on the initial strike or do u count too 10 before you set the hook? Some say set right away and some say to wait a bit??
I set it right away. The times i use live mullet, ill let them eat on it for a little bit. But artificials on jigs, i dont wait.
I have the same saltwater fish sign, I bought it many years ago
Yes I need to buy everything I seen in the video plus like 30 of those lures lol
Let us know how we can help! Check out our online tackle shop here: fishstrong.com/
is there a way to add a second hook near the paddle tail? because sometimes the paddle tail will get bit off and I lose the fish.
No idea how to do it, but that’s a great idea. Going to have to do some thinking.
In my experience, short strikes like that are going to be either small fish or trash fish like pin fish or puffers. Keeper flounder will typically eat it pretty aggressively. I'm in the Florida Panhandle though so YMMV.
Sounds like it'll change the action and be counter-productive.
She’s a keeper !!
Great video ✔🏁
VERY VERY VERY VERY THANKS
Great channel for avid fisherman like me.
Thank you for putting together this great video! I'd like to know if everything shown in this video will work for catching "halibut" in the west/pacific ocean?? I believe they strike similar to the flounder. Thank you!
I have noticed that you do not do a hooksett in the video or am I just not seeing it if you see this please reply
Using braided line, doesn't require the big hook set.
Thak u I'm going to do this.
Where are they fishing?
I’ve tried those Zman lures a couple of times, they just don’t get the job done like the down south lures or Berkeley gulp. I love all the info
You still feel this way? I've caught more fish on zman minnowz than any other lure in my life.
Thank you for this video .
Thanks for watching!
Which is the real rod combo u used on this video can u link them??
Great video! Wondering if the same baits and techniques will work here in San Diego. Won't say the word California because I know it's a bad one. What rod and reel setup are you using. Thanks again for the awesome tips!
Any tips for 100'+depth
So what can i type to buy one on google ?
