James at 3:38: I haven’t done the fish. I think I’m gonna leave that. It gives him a choice. If he doesn’t like salmon then he can go with something else.
So yeah. It was a surprise that Barry didn’t change the dish. He normally does that. When he doesn’t like something, he just ignores it or leaves it for someone else.

@@alleosussquirt8041 He didn't really. At 3:38 he points out that the fish could be swapped out. If Barry actually cared about the fish, then he could have switched it at any time during his time, since the Salmon hadn't been cooked yet.
Barry:
Double breadcrumbs the fish which improves it massively.
Starts making a tartar sauce.
Begins cooking the chips.
Doesn't hide the pineapple curry.

OMG What if the first person gets a different brief than the rest of them, so the first person sets up their dish and the rest try and wrangle it into what their dish was haha.

The Scottish-Italian chip shops usually have a Fritto Misto (mixed fry) and Salmon is usually there -- and it really works

@@yukononun thats the problem. He never has to eat for cooking he chooses to. They have even asked him not to eat. So he may just be a dumbass. Mike will purposely not eat meat when he does his vegan or vegetarian diet. Even if he cooks it.

Pirie’spinkargylesweater thank you. Some people don’t take it very seriously when it could cause death. I’ve seen someone almost choke to death because they forgot their antihistamines in a mountain hike. Very scary experience

You could also have it so it’s swapped. Let everyone pick 3 ingredients without the others knowing or what the dish is and for their turn they don’t get to work with the ingredients they pick but with the ingredients someone else picked
That is a fantastic idea that is sure to bring out a lot of laughs for us all.
Yeah, swap them and don't tell them you swapped it, until they start the challenge! That would be great!

@@emeleel It WAS his choice though. He could have gone another path. How many times have we seen Barry go an entirely different direction than what was on the board right in front of him? He does have a long enough history of saying "F^*( this! I'm gonna do this instead!" for me to legitimately believe the sob story "But it wasn't really his decision." Yes, I am being tough on him but that's what happens when you come in and present a negative attitude towards a situation.
@@GutsBatman He hasn't done that in a long time, and even so, he wasn't entirely sure that it WAS fish and chips. It was 100% James's fault. He knew that salmon was unconventional yet he put it on the table anyway.
@@yukononun James chose the fish, and Barry chose to continue using the fish. Who cares about an "unconventional" fish! If Barry didn't like it in the fish and chips, since he was complaining about it the whole time, then he should have swapped it out. But to say that it's James's fault for not wanting boring and flavorless "traditional" food is just ridiculous.
The worst thing James did was the pineapple, which was just wrong, imo.
You know a great relay for when you come back and can do it:
Labeless Tinned Food Relay.
Selection of canned food, missing labels.
Some fresh veg to modify flavor/combo.
If you open a can, you have to use it.
Maybe separate the cans into categories (meat, bean, etc) so that you don't just have everyone open cans of beans.
Order: Any as long as Jamie is first and one of the cans has spam.
Consider it a celebration of coming back from Covid by using up what we all bought for our pantries.
Might want to label the cans with numbers so you can use the leftover ones without random later.

Also feel like the "only first person gets to know the dish"-thing works quite well to force them to pick up, what the others have done. Great job.
I love how ever since they started doing specific dishes and stopped having the "I don't care what this was going to be before me, I'm going to change it to something else" issue, I don't think they've failed a single challenge.
Well..... there was the last one which was definitely a fail
They should do one where they say there is a specific dish that only the first person gets to see, but not actually have a specific dish and instead let the first person start whatever dish they like. I wonder if they would still take it in random directions then or not
@@zzskyninjazz1821 I'm not sure which you're referring to. If you mean the Brunch challenge for Ep9, they technically passed that one and it also wasn't a specific dish challenge. And before that, the croquembouche was a very impressive pass. Did I miss an episode somewhere? I hope I did because I always want to watch more of this.
@@chrisvrana706 2 months later. We have returned to rock bottom. James Currie has proven to be the worst person to start off ever since his plans for dishes are too complex for a normal to make. The pastry challenge was already handwritten to be an easy pass but James decided to go and make Sponge cake instead.
So proud of (and surprised by) Barry biting his tongue when James blamed the salmon on him, I'd have kicked off by that point 😂😂
He seemed so flustered.
I feel for Barry with his pineapple allergy! I'm allergic to apples and my sister always forgets and offering to give me apple stuff. And I tell her, "I know you are on my life insurance but can you try not to kill me?"
What we've learned is that James frustrates Barry with his experimentation. James chooses white wine for the spag bol and Barry immediately replaces it with red. James chooses salmon for fish and chips, Barry complains endlessly about it. Pretty clear who the traditionalist is!

Theme idea: a random country or region is revealed to the first person to go, then said person has to pick a classic dish from that country or region. Could work for many episodes.

I love how Barry can be the most cockiest member and the most nervous wreck at the same time all dependant on which format he is in.
I felt so bad for barry. It all started when he picked up the pen off the floor and then asked where the pen went.

Also Barry’s blowtorched pepper and leaving the hob on. Plus Ben’s sprig of mint.
Janice' narration is a great addition to these videos. It's much better than mere music in those moments while the boys are too busy to explain what they're doing.

@@canadiandude1965 If you were presented with a classic well known in your region that has an abnormal twist to it (salmon instead of a white fish) and half of the stuff made so far would potentially kill you (Barry's allergic to pineapple) you would be unhappy as well. Barry did an amazing job by still contributing to this dish - double dipped the fish to improve it's taste, made another side dish... He could've just cross his arms for 10 minutes and sass James for being an asshole who always bullies Barry, but he did not.

I live in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the us and my favorite fish and chips shop (Newman’s) does salmon fish and chips and it’s delicious. Also many shops do salmon over here because this fish is such a big part of the PNW culture.
