  • For $5.00, you can transform your boring old push mower into a high-revving monster! This mower is my "beater" mower. The deck is rotted and patched with bondo. The engine has bad rings, scored cylinder, and no repair is possible. I would NEVER do this on a good mower.
    This is meant for entertainment only, so do NOT do this unless you know what you are doing.
    WARNING: Running your mower at an elevated RPM can cause injury or death due to:
    * Blade failure.
    * Exponential increases in projectile energy.
    * Increasd time to brin engine to a stop after letting go of the handle in an emergency.
    Make sure you have a strong blade that is VERY balanced and in excellent condition. Do NOT do this if near other people. Do NOT do this unless you have researched dangers of increased blade RPM and know what you are doing!
    Do NOT wildly over-rev the engine! Rev it in bursts and be reasonable with RPM. Holding the throttle wide open with no load will cause DANGEROUS engine and blade RPM!
    Do not keep engine RPM at eleveated levels for long durations. It increases the chance of failure. If you feel any odd vibrations or hear odd noises, shut off the mower and inspect blade for damage before continuing! Excess vibration can cause an otherwise strong blade to disintegrate!

    4000 RPM is only recommended on those machines that were built before October 1, 1968, before ANSI changed the maximum blade tip speed limit from 21,000 FPM to 19,000 FPM.
    Maximum RPM at 21,000 FPM:
    16" blade: 5013 RPM = 4800 RPM
    17" blade: 4718 RPM = 4500 RPM
    18" blade: 4456 RPM = 4250 RPM
    19" blade: 4222 RPM = 4000 RPM
    20" blade: 4011 RPM = 3800 RPM
    Even with the examples listed above, once you get to a 20" size deck, 4000 RPM is rarely achieved at when using a 4-cycle engine.

    I put a pressure washer engine on a push mower and the blade really wasn't low enough to do a great job but the engine was "cheap". I had to lower the rpms because it was stirring up anything that wasn't buried under the soil. Crap was slinging everywhere and dust was aweful. Great for a wet lawn maybe. It was set at 3600 and the blade was a 22" mulching blade by Craftsman Husqvarna. I can't remember the oem but they were an oem with a funny logo.

    one thing I would do is use bicycle brake cable for the string

    Thumb throttle maybe on the left side.... Assuming that left turns are typical.
