Swamping around ... with wire wheels, louvres and a 1500cc hillman engine

- this week on 'swamping around' I go to a wire wheel builder to get some wheels rebuilt and get a very interesting guided tour....next, I replace the solid mounts on my Austin 12 'the leaf' for rubber mounts ....moving on I continue reassembly on a 1958 hillman 1500 cc engine with the help of Chris from the Bracket factory / @thebracketfactory
along with sorting the wire wheels for 'the rat' I also get some louvres pressed by the local engineer Ted.....finally finishing with a dry fit of the tonneau cover for 'the leaf' and a ride in an early 60's renault Caravelle

Wheel building part wax very interesting and I was really pleased when I watched Brent at half-ass give you a shout out
cheers👍
No worries; the broken bits of ring will blow out through the exhaust valves if you slip the clutch and
rev the snot out of it. I know; we've done it before on the way to deliver a Commer van, my mate had just sold.
[Beautiful slide playing, there, Jim!]
i heard that ...jim is such a good musician man
Love the shop tour with the wheels .
Enjoyed the whole show thanks 😎✌️
thank you !
Lovely long vid this week. Swamp and Bracket could catch on, you know. It was a real surprise to see The Wheel Man. Long live men in sheds!
hahahaha it was indeed a shed !!!💪
You're weaving a spell and drawing us in...not that we mind too much cos it's so nice and cosy in there.
hahahahaha👊
❤ the Caravelle, the louvers, the music, the visits to the shops. Life is good. Super video. Thanks.
hahahahah ...
Another great video Bryan, great tunes from Jim and Nice to see the all new comedy duo Swamp n bracket making an appearance ❤
hahahah cheers Warren ...hows Alan performing?/
@@oakswamp doing some bits, lowered the driving position, gearing is way too tall and rear suspension is really harsh so a few bits n pieces to sort out👍
Last night, after struggling to make progress on my project because of arthritis i came in,looked at my tablet, and there you were.just the tonic i needed and still the best thing on you tube.regards jim
thanks alot , sorry to hear about your arthritis Jim , fair play for keeping at it mate
I can’t believe that I hadn’t seen this channel until Brent at Halfass mentioned it. This channel is AWESOME! Love the ingenuity and the music!
glad you found us dude, Welcome aboard!
A great symbiosis of Engineers, Musicians, old stuff and good-good times. Good times GOLD! More and onwards... Great entertainment/video compilation too!!! Oak Swamp's growing. Well done!
Symbiosis is any type of a close and long-term biological interaction between two biological organisms of different species, termed symbionts, be it mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic. In 1879, Heinrich Anton de Bary defined it as "the living together of unlike organisms". The term is sometimes used in the more restricted sense of a mutually beneficial interaction in which both symbionts contribute to each other's support.
thanks mate👊
Man did you cram a whole lot in this episode! Wheelwright was outstanding
The level of craftmanship on this channel is amazing, from all concerned. The Caravelle is a peach!
thank you👊
Chat with machinist reminded me of the guy who trained me on a lathe saying to all us apprentices that when he retired he was going to erect a lathe on his front lawn and every day would take a cold chisel out and chip a f---king piece of it!!! Needless to say although I admired his superb skills and had acquired some practical knowledge, I did'nt pursue a career in machine shop work.
hahahahah ...funny man, cheers
YeeY! Great ViD . . and . . .BIG UP to HALFORDS tools . . . I;ve still got a socket set and a set of spanners I got for my 21st birthday present back in 1984 . . . FORTY YEARS later most of the socket set [apart from the racket!] and ALL of the spanners AND the tool roll I got the spanners in are still going strong!
fantastic...because you know how to look after stuff !! cheers mate
The louvres are way cool in more ways than one . Jim thanks for the great music. The wheel man needs a bigger shop . Thanks Bryan a good video.
thanks mate ...yes a man in a shed ! he seems happy there thou
Another excellent video Bryan, loved both the shop tour and especially the out-takes. Paul
cheers Paul.👊
Great to see these old skills alive and well ❤️
indeed, but not in big numbers ...so glad to find him
Great as always!!!! A little "Pro" tip for you. Cut 2 lengths of fuel hose to go around the bolts of the conn rods to assist in line up with the crank and protect the crank from dings. You can make some studs from cut off bolts if it is the screw in type. Cheers!!

cheers dude great idea
The louvers look great. Love the Caravelle. My dad had a'59 Caravelle in the last '60's. He drove that thing for years. Probably the best looking car Renault ever made. Thanks for the memories!
such a nice car ...cheers mate
I find, at least for myself, the reason I enjoy scratch building projects is that everything you do creates a set of problems that one has to solve, the problem solving I think is the most enjoyable part, keep up the good work my friend
we are problem solvers by nature ....and its fun! cheers
Fabulous! Always fascinatin'
thanks !!!
First time viewer, loved it mate. Quality!
Awesome, thank you!
Great update mate, Back in the 80s I built a Burlington Arrow, I hand punched Louvres on the bonnet and engine sides. Made my own jig from hardwood and a large bolt welded to another bolt in a T, ground down and filed to shape. Took a while to figure it out, but they looked "factory" in the end. Love your vids👍
thanks mate...Ive seen people make the die out of wood before ...initially that was my plan! cheers
Feet in the paddling pool sun shining & swampin around , great watching other folks doing their stuff from piston rings to tarps ,Ace🎉🎉🎉🎉😂❤
Thanks 👍
Brett is that laid back he is still in the middle of last week!! You have to go back to pre workshop fire to get his mantra . His favourite toy is the laser de-ruster , what a tool !
Ive been watching the channel...nice fella
❤ great entertainment ❤
cheers
As ever highly entertaining. I also now know a bunch of stuff about piston rings and what they look like when they "throw in the towel"!
Glad the little Hillman Minx is getting a bit of attention. A good old vintage classic, the same as me, and exactly the same age!
cheers Steve .....looking forward to smoking it about for a while ...put some music in there yaaaaaa ! cheers bro
So much to enjoy in this one Bryan. As ever! I love that adding an extra carburettor gives a whole three horsepower...Wow!
The spokey doctor was fascinating. Jim's music, Ted's Louvre magic. The lost lord of the piston ring.
And a Hamble cruise in a Caravelle. Brilliant.
Lovely evening here in Netley. So nice sitting in the garden watching Oak Swamp with a roll up and a whisky.
Cheers.
Nick.
thanks mate glad you enjoyed it👍
Great to see a chap with common tools and a typical garage doing such good work. Tired of seeing youtube channels with million dollar garages and equipment the common man will never have.
Thanks 👍
peace be upon you sir

Nice one mate from Australia.
Thanks mate👍
Those guys sure know how to make great music and you sir know how to bodge broken car parts like an expert a bloody good one at that.

indeed ...hes a good bloke Ted..cheers
Love Ted ❤️ Amazing job 😍
hes a legend !!!
Last monday had a job up the hill at the wind farm found all staff watching the England Spain euro match. Someone commented that that the the last time England won something was 1966. We were on a camping holiday and my dad had gone to pay for petrol and returned saying England was in the world cup final. Then we went on with our holiday. Not big footie supporters. It was a year of foot and mouth .
Tee shirt has arrived ,thank you . Will wear it to our annual auto jumble. Suspect along with several clothing layers and waterproofs.
yes i dont really follow foot ball just the england games and when they played in 66 i was not quite born ! thanks for the support mate
Another absorbing potpourri of automotive culture. Still the most entertaining YT channel.

I’ve commented before, and feel inspired to do so again. Love the show. Refreshing, natural, artistic, and a hoot. Great job. The addition of live music really takes it to the next level. Not your bog standard knucklehead car guy TH-cam channel.
Thank you very much !

Another great video! This past weekend I bought a 67 Austin Healey Sprite! (Not a Frog eye) but it will be a fun run around car!

hahahahah
Brent sent me, im in the Philippines
welcome....hope you like it here
Great video, love the outtakes.
thanks mate
One the rat .the bolt that goes thru the steering box arm looks to be very close to hitting chassis . There's a view on film that looks like a hit to it or bump might make it hit and get stuck in the chassis hole . Maybe worth a look for safety . Love the cars and videos every time . Great watch cool cars mate .
you mean the pitman arm?
Yes pitman arm . Bottom bolt . Or small end looks very close to chassis during the shot on video . I'm sure you checked it .
It's about 38.14 on video .
Another great video 🇨🇦
Thanks 👍
Lol, open with a guitar for a vid about wire spoke wheels...
i'm overwhelmed with memories of tuning spokes when building bike & motorcycle wheels...
nice one ...tis an art
Another very good episode. Had heaps of everything. Probably could have done without the phone thing. Thanks.
yes you are right it was gonna lead into me going down later in the video ...thanks mate
Great video Brian
thanks
that pointer about top ring breaking when 'easing' motors, worth the admission price alone
and Jim with the toons; blindin'.
why not hone the bores on that motor?.
I was gonna hone them but cleaning up after put me off...cheers mate
Like the content of cars and the music,Brent from half ass custom sent me to do a shout out
awesome thanks dude !
Another great vid Brian ans liked your shout out for Billy Strings. I found him on TH-cam a couple of years ago when I started getting into Bluegrass. Check out his cover of Jethro tulls Thick As A Brick awsome and so is Turmoil and Tinfoil about coping with his alcholic parents
thanks mate ...yes ill check that out ...ive been in the roots scene for some time ...love it !
cheers
Halfords tools are made by the same company who make Blue point / Snap on company
that'll explain it then....
Loveley work as always! That cat of yours does he have an insta? He's a handsome lad!

thanks mate ...yes hopefully a full line !
how long does it take him to rerim & respoke one wheel, including tuning the spokes?
(i'm trying to calculate his cost per hour & compare to how long it takes me)
I really dont know mate , but he dosnt make lots of money tbh
I think halfords tools are made in the same factory as snapon. That is why they offer a lifetime warranty.
really?
😎👍
