  • I open a drive unit for a 22" Craftsman mower in this video. It is my first time seeing the inside of this unit, so consider this an exploratory video more than an expert tutorial. I found this teardown to be quite interesting and will hold onto the unit for use in a future project.

Why not find something to hold your camera while you’re filming.

I own a Craftsman lawnmower that is front wheel propelled but sometimes the pulley on top of the transmission will not turn and I hear a squealing noise. What would cause that? Can that be fixed?

My Craftsman self Propelled says use "Texaco Starplex Premium 1 Grease, Part No. 750369" so its all grease inside but they don't sale the grease anymore? Any Ideas?

If you can find out what type of grease that brand is, you can use a substitute. As long as it's close, it should be OK. These units don't see a huge amount of stress. I think you just need a light grease that is ALMOST liquid, but still stays put without dripping.

They sure don't build them like that any more.... All plastic now days
Too bad that one wasn't rebuilt every year and lubed with synthetic grease
It would be like new 25-50 years later
Just service it and keep running it for the rest of your life

The transmission on my front wheel drive Craftsman mower barely propels the mower when I'm pushing it. Is it worth it to remove and disassemble the transmission to repair the bad part(s)?

Why did you say the belt needs tension?

Ok but the belt is kind of easy to remove from the transmission pulley.

I already tied down the engine control lever so I can engage the front wheels. I turned the pulley on the transmission by hand and sometimes the front wheels will not turn forward but they always turn backwards when I rotate the pulley to make them turn backwards. I think there is a broken part in the transmission. What do you think now?

I can not remember which way I turned the pulley to make the wheels turn frontward and backward but how does that matter?

The mower already has high rear wheels.

This not showing any body how to remove the gear.
