I LOVE how Chris starts to talk about focus speed for family usage. I wish you guys can keep it up since you have to realize that most of use don't really use our camera for "pro" usage all the time. Sometimes it's just nice to have a pocketable camera that can keep up with the kids whether in video and stills. Great job guys.
Jordan touched on it right at the end. Which is what I purchased a ZS100. When I am traveling I find not having more zoom range can become a problem. The ZS100 focuses great wide open, just like Jordan touched on. These camera's do not need this amazing fast picture taking capability, they do need quick focus for a few frames and both do a good job at that. DSLR is for sports, not a pocket camera. Pocket camera should take good pictures and video. The ZS100 with it's 1" sensor finally delivered. I think a lot of people are missing out on taking advantage of it. I think the video quality at night is perfectly acceptable, given the camera, and during the day the 4k footage is great. Cropping the sensor is a bummer I will admit, and hopefully the next version will stop this madness. And guys, thanks for the dedication. I know shooting this must have been physically challenging with the cold that bad.
Malifestro I’m very seriously looking at the zs100. Main question now for me is how is it in low light? And if you happen to know, how is it in low light compared to earlier ZS travel zooms? I know it SHOULD be better, but if it really? Thanks!
RX100V wins for Vloggers as LX10 just does not focus well enough in video, wish Panasonic start improving their video auto focus soon as its their main weakness as otherwise that camera would been a great vlogging camera.
Panasonic would crop to 36mm at 4K, but not at 1080p. Should be mentioned at least. I would probably expect a lot more people would vlog at 1080p, given also that the LX10 would have the full 5-axis stabilization at 1080p, while it goes down to like 2-axis at 4K. And the Sony can't shoot more than 5-7 minutes of 4K video before overheating. But if you would vlog at 4K, yes the Panasonic will crop 4K. The Sony can do 4K without crop but it also overheats; the LX10 doesn't overheat.
chungdha I got the LUMIX for vlogging and tbh it focuses pretty dam good!! Sometimes loses the focus a little but gets it back! And tbh it sometimes given me some really coool arty shots I never even tried to get haha!
Some golden humor in this video. Loved the remark about The Revenant. I think Chris and Jordan have struck a good balance between being adversarial and the friendly banter. In the past, sometimes the adversarial vibe was too intense and I legitimately thought they hated each other but was forced to do the videos together by their boss. I used to obsess over being able to carry a tiny point-and-shoot that can still give me great results, but the results were always disappointing when compared to what I could achieve with larger cameras. Eventually, I decided that carrying a small holster pouch with a Micro Four Thirds system is actually the best compromise/solution. It gives excellent results yet is small and light weight enough that I never feel like it's a burden to carry one M43 body with 3 lenses.
I’m 7 yrs late to the party, but agree with the sentiment expressed. I went with a full frame camera, A7C for my larger than point and shot but still relatively small camera and keep in a small shoulder bag like you with an additional lens to swap.
I've had the Panasonic for a long time now. It it awesome to have the 1.4 aperture. But the focus really isn't dependable. Also it crops way to much while recording 4K. Also the stabilisation isn't very good. But overall it's pretty good. Especially for picture taking.
The RX100 has a 5min 4K recording limit regardless of the temperature and the LX15 has a 15min limit, which is far more usable and they did forget to mention that.
STOP IT! Not every Sony camera overheats during video recording, and those that do only do so in specific circumstances. What the hell people, research a bit before posting BS.
Why are the colors so much better on the Panasonic (13:51)? Look at the led flowers. The LX matches the video of the review, the RX flowers look much more blue (13:59).
To me a more interesting comparison would be LX10 vs RX100 III, as they're priced more or less the same. I guess it mostly comes down to EVF vs better physical controls.
Great video guys! Thanks, for producing yet another informative piece. I love your work! One minor suggestion, (and perhaps it’s me, so apologies if I’m out of line)... can you use the name of the camera more often when you comment on its performance in the various areas, rather than saying, “mine does ‘x’ or yours does ‘y?’” I found myself a bit confused about which camera you were referring to. Thanks, again for your great work, and keep it up!
Thanks so much for sharing this well done comparison between this 2 cameras!! I myself have been working with the sony rx 100 for yeas. I love the mark II version because of the battery time life!! last for ever...... almost 1/2 day working and also the shoe mount on top which I can put a remote control for strobes to bad the new version don't have that features. Now I have been working with the IV for almost 4 years, just broke it a 6 months ago and now trying to replace it with the V which similar and a little better on video. Almost the 70% of my work had taken with Sony rx 100. Thanks again guys you rock cool photos and art you have. here some of my work if you want to see what i have done with the rx 100 @contenporad Cheers!! RC
Kindersama The issue is that the rx100 is not that slim either, and given the price, and the risk of getting dust onto the lens area. Would anyone want to put it in their pocket. To me, this seems like the people who opt for an ultra book that is only slightly thinner than the slim sub 1 inch laptops, but often cost much more, while offering lower specs, such as a 50-60% slower core M CPU instead of the core i5 or core i7 CPU.
Razor2048 You really haven't handled a Rx100 do you? It's really pocketable. And it's an apple to orange comparison. At least, you can compare it to a G7x or a LX100 (despite the larger sensor), but you can't compare it to a DSLR.
Kindersama I understand that the rx100 can fit in a pocket. The point that I am getting at, is how many people will risk putting it in a pocket instead of a proper protective case, or purpose built camera bag? It is like the people who pick a ultra book over a slim laptop. They are for some reason, willing to give up 60% of their performance for probably a 0.2 inch reduction in thickness, and both devices will still have them using a dedicated case or bag to carry the laptop around. Sure you can do the apple thing where they stuck a MacBook Air in an envelope, but no one in their right mind would do that on such an expensive device, outside of a marketing campaign.
We did enjoy this, thanks for bearing the cold. Love your reviews always, one day I will visit your store in Canada. If not, would love to take you out in London if you come here :-) Never cared for the viewfinder when I had Rx100, always wanted touchscreen instead. That makes more sense for the modern looking camera I feel.
Lol, loved the trash talk. I think The Camera Store should send you guys up to Banff to do a similar video between the Hero5 and the latest Sony action cams with optical stabilization... out on the slopes, rocking the snowboard lingo :)
Thanks Chris. You're assuming that because we live near the mountains we are physically fit, and adventurous though... not the case. Jordan goes on vacation to read books, and I drink Coke Zero all day long. Wait we do both Ski and Snowboard, never mind. Chris@TCSTV
Hmmm... I'm now envisioning you guys kicking back with a few Coke Zeros, then making some toboggan runs down a local hill with your respective camera trained on a book in front of you while riding down. Then afterwards, the person who can read the page from the [least shaky] video clip the fastest wins. Three birds. One stone.
I thought I decided on the a6500 because the video is absolutely so beautiful to my eye. I like it better than both the A7Rii and A7sii. In low light I love the noise patterns so that doesn't bother me at all. Still hesitant tho...When I found out about how bad the dimmed screens are on ALL Sony's I froze up. The rolling shutter is horrendous on these cams, too. For 2000-4000usd(with a quality lens) I expect more. I think we are soooo close to A7iii and A7siii updates it might pay to hold off and see. Plus the GH5 is available so soon... but, well over 3000usd with lens, sLog, filters and cards. With that all being said... Do I want to invest over 3000usd in something a bit better.....SHIT! Brings me right back to the a6500! I think that's the way to go.... and on a gimbal. People are creating al kinds of beautiful content with it... so, we should be able to also. Hope a decision comes to you soon and I will look forward to seeing the rewards on your channel:)
Your videos have inspired me to go to Calgary and the Canadian Rockies this summer....but surfing for plane tickets now I understand why tickets are a 100 bucks one way to Calgary right now.
Maaaan, I have a sony RX100m3 and hardly ever use the EVF. Dont get me wrong, Its great and works well...But a little small and you gotta go through the small process of setup and set down. Takes only a few extra seconds but I find myself choosing to making the screen work rather than pop and pull the finder out...Really digging the panasonic and that touch screen seems veeerrry handy. Much cheaper and faster lens! Totally would get the panny.
I enjoy carrying the Panasonic ZS100. It fits a niche for everyday walk around and carry. Sometimes I just don't want to bring my larger DSLRs or Mirrorless bodies and their lenses. I think Jordan mentioned the ZS100 near the end of this video. I did enjoy this video.
An LX100 or GX80 with Leica 15mm f/1.7 solves that too. -- though, smartphones are getting more capable each release too. Looking forward to the Huawei P10 with dual Leica set-up
Yas never addressed the over heating issue I keep hearing the RX100v suffers from. I've a horrible 5 minute record time? Say it ain't so? Also does the RX100v actually do 960fps slo mo?
Dear How is going!? Please can you tell me what is better regarding this two camera options? So is better to have an APS sensor with 16MP and 4896 x 3264 photos or having a 1" sensor with 20MP with 5456 x 3632 ? About pixel density ? Photo quality and also maybe printing quality? What you suggest? Thanks Mark
Another thought: I'm planning to upgrade from my little Canon S95 to something with more updated sensor, pixels, focus, LCD screen, etc. So, for me, as a carry-cam, the LX10 is a good use of my money. For a more "serious" cam, I'll probably spring for either an FZ1000 (constant f/2.8 and big zoom for shooting animals) or GX8 (interchangeable lenses and bigger sensor). Ideally, I'd want at least an APS-C sensor on that camera, but just don't like the Sony or any SLR. If only Pentax took its old Spotmatic body and put a digital sensor and LCD on it. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, screw-in lenses and all!
great review!! the missing ND Filter is really hurting when comparing These 2 cameras. What about the focus system of the rx100iii in comparison to the lx15? Have a nice weekend guys
The snowed in maze and hotel scenes in the Shining were filmed at Elstree studios in London with artificial snow. The hotel interiors on the sound stages there.
This would have been useful if you compared the same scene using both cameras. The photos taken with each camera were too drastically different to be of any use.
great video guys, funny video while still being informative. I've watched a couple of time to make up my mind and it's always amusing. Also if I can ask for an advice , do you think it is still worth to buy a Panasonic lumic dmc-gm5? I wanted something along that size to be my daily driver something to have always with me in my pocket. However it turned two years old and I just don't know if there's any successor to it right behind the corner or not.Otherwise what you think is a camera that could be effective as a daily driver while not being too much of a burden ? I thought even to sony rx100 mark V but it is not really my coup of tea.
thanks for this, I spent a good 2 weeks debating these exact two cameras as a pocket option. Went with the RX100v and I'm honestly astonished at how happy I am with it. For the first time ever I feel like I can shoot the kind of video clips I want (I have a toddler) and it just rocks. Not only that though I find those moments where I'm debating on taking my Fuji X-Pro2 with me to be less and less often. For casual outings etc I feel 100% equipped with the Sony, saving the Fuji system for intentional photo outings.
Did the stereo audio at the end when Jordan was building the soft box sound really strange and distracting to anyone else? Was that the internal camera mics? Because that seemed pretty unusable in that particular clip to me...
I don't think you guys mentioned that the LX10 can record 4K video for 15 minutes, VS only 5 minutes for the Sony. And another somewhat popular TH-cam guy was able to hit record after the 15 minutes was up and recorded 4K video like this until the battery died which was about an hour. The Sony just can't compete on the shooting 4K for more than 5 minutes.
I’m 7 years late to the party, but I agree this would have been a great thing for the video to note. 4K on the sony model is very limited, (5min clips) and while it may not have a crop, the stabilization is non existent making any hand held footage pretentious to use at best. What they did not mention about the LX10 is the rolling shutter performance, which is horrible on the ZS100 and ZS200 cameras.
What a great way to learn about these cameras! Loved the friendly rivalry - you really were serious about defending the honour of your cameras. Good shooting by Levi as well, especially the shots in the mall. Quick question to Jordan: As a videographer - Panasonic G85 with its stabilisation and feature set or Fuji XT20 with those lovely colour presets?
What camera is better for someone whose looking for high qaulity photos for traveling. and Sometimes 4k video not for vlogging though. I been looking up the cameras consistantly for 5 days and I can't decide which one is better choice since lx10 is 300 dollars cheaper. I just cant decide which one has better photo ability..
I know its 7 years later, but considering everything (including price), I’d like to try the LX10. I owned the RX100 VA for 3 years and it is a very good camera. They have a less expensive model ZV1, which doesn’t have the EVF or built in flash but introduces touch screen controls now. I think for photos the panasonic has better colors straight out of the camera, better dynamic range, better lower light performance, better exposure controls with the aperture ring and additional dial on it’s top for shutter speed or ISO control, and I’d appreciate the touch controls on the screen. The continuous auto focus reliability can be overcome by shooting in single point or manual.
It's extremely difficult to shoot more than outros and B-Roll in the store, as customers are usually trying to talk to us while filming. Maybe we'll do one after the store closes one of these days... Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV I meant off hours of course. why freeze your butts when you have a store that is full of lighting equipment. in any way, love them any way you do them.
Really enjoyed the video. I hope you would have also included Canon G7X Mark II in comparison. Btw, where does G7X II stand in comparison with these two? - Especially in areas of IQ, Dynamic Range and Low light performance. I know video cannot be compared. As a Canon FF DSLR user, would like to stay with Canon for ease of familiarity with controls and dials. Please advise.
always love your videos! your brutal honesty on your reviews is refreshing and insightful. i'm in the market for a simple camera that can shoot 120fps without breaking my piggy bank. i've considered going as far as getting a6300 or a6500. i just want something i can shoot some professional looking slow motion with. the end game being, hopefully, shooting some amateur music videos for local talent/ friends. the camera's main purpose will be capturing slow motion at 120fps and i haven't been able to find a camera or camcorder that has had the reviews the rx100 v has received or even in this price range. do you have any suggestions i can look at for more options? budget range tops out around $1,000 usd. thank you! keep up the awesome work! always a joy to watch!
Hi there, I appreciate your videos! I'm looking for a quality pocket camera with slow motion and great zoom (focal length?). The Sony RX100 V is my current pick, but the zoom is weak.. I really want both but am having a tough time. I would love to find a quality compact with 250fps at least and preferably 400+, and 250mm+ focal. Any ideas? Anybody? Thanks!
Minus 25 😳😳😳. Great review, thanks guys. I’m in the hunt for a compact for street photography. Maybe you should of compared the lx with the rx100IV as the price point as you keep pointing out is way out. We all have our different requirements when I comes to purchase but I think I’m going for lx15. Reasons, lens, don’t need viewfinder. Thanks again for an entertaining review.
On image quality, I’d take the full frame camera, even with the kit lens, all day long over a 1in sensor any day. For pocket-ability and no fuss with serviceable quality use the 1in pocketable point and shoot.
Didn't realize you guys were from the Calgary store. I bought my Sony a7ii from there!! I can't go in any camera stores for a while though. Always spend too much money.
Sony not changing the body is very nice for under water photographers because they don't need to get a new and potentially very expensive housing every time they upgrade their camera.
It is worth mentioning that the 4K video is limited to 5 minutes, and after 9 minutes the camera is so hot that it can no longer be photographed, and that there is no entry to an external microphone
I don't know what it is but Sony has always a flatter image, i don't know to explain it. But with a Panasonic or a Canon I get a more photo feeling from the old days. That's why I prefer the Panasonic range. I had a lot of Sony camera's in the past, but hopefully there is coming a LX200....i want something small with a big sensor and of course 4K...but as always great review, I love this channel :-)
These videos are getting more and more badass than before
Can't wait for best and worst of 2017. Can the year finally be over? ;)
I hope they move back to hard spirits this year. None of this soft beer drinking stuff pls.
I guess one more advantage on LX 10 is the post-focus option which RX100 doesn't have.
RX100V wins for Vloggers as LX10 just does not focus well enough in video, wish Panasonic start improving their video auto focus soon as its their main weakness as otherwise that camera would been a great vlogging camera.
True but for vlogging they should also improve the crop. The Sony can shot at 24mm and the panasonic only at 36mm which is a huge deal for vlogging.
Vloggers use Canon anyways. Sad but true.
Totally agree.
And the Sony can't shoot more than 5-7 minutes of 4K video before overheating.

chungdha I got the LUMIX for vlogging and tbh it focuses pretty dam good!! Sometimes loses the focus a little but gets it back! And tbh it sometimes given me some really coool arty shots I never even tried to get haha!
A good example of how 2 people can have a totally different opinion and still handle that with a nice and friendly way of humor!
You guys are so much fun together in front of the camera! More of this please!
So snarky, so hilarious, that extra cold weather really brought it out in you guys for this one lol, freaking hilarious, loved it
In terms of photo/video quality, how does LX100 compare with LX10?
Some golden humor in this video. Loved the remark about The Revenant.
I think Chris and Jordan have struck a good balance between being adversarial and the friendly banter. In the past, sometimes the adversarial vibe was too intense and I legitimately thought they hated each other but was forced to do the videos together by their boss.

Sony has overheating issue in video mode... And you didn't tell about this issue in your video...
Andrew Lazarev you can't when it's -30 ambient
***** they knew what they did )))
I haven't noticed this at all and have shot a fair bit of video with it. Case doesn't even warm up.
The RX100 has a 5min 4K recording limit regardless of the temperature and the LX15 has a 15min limit, which is far more usable and they did forget to mention that.

To me a more interesting comparison would be LX10 vs RX100 III, as they're priced more or less the same. I guess it mostly comes down to EVF vs better physical controls.
yeah id like to see that too, since im planning to buy ether one. due to budgeting hehe
III doesn't have 4k video

Very nice review style, love it. The concluding chapter is terrific.
Where i live the LX15 is 400 euro cheaper... that is a lot to consider.. 599 vs 999...
very helpful video, thanks guys. You managed to tacle al the questions I had about these 2 cameras before buying one.
Here in Florida it hasn't been below 38 all year. Its usually about 75 though.
Great shootout, gentlemen, great job as always.
Can we get a shootout comparing the Sony RX100 mk5, in comparison to the Nikon D5500 + Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 lens (both come out to a similar price)?
but not size
Well, a D5500 is not really pocketable, specially with a 17-50/2.8 lens... Comparison done! :)
Kindersama The issue is that the rx100 is not that slim either, and given the price, and the risk of getting dust onto the lens area. Would anyone want to put it in their pocket. Panasonic may have a 1.4 aperture but it stops down quickly right after you start zooming following the wide angle
What about the zoom? How many is it all together, the optical and the digital? Thank you!
the Sony needs a touch screen.
why does sony have a problem with this tek that Olympus was giving us six years ago with the OMD EM5.
We did enjoy this, thanks for bearing the cold. Love your reviews always, one day I will visit your store in Canada. If not, would love to take you out in London if you come here :-)
Never cared for the viewfinder when I had Rx100, always wanted touchscreen instead. That makes more sense for the modern looking camera I feel.
Love the vibe of this whole vid. You guys are great together.
And for those interested in visiting Alberta in the Spring...it starts in early June.
So, what is list for all compact cameras with ND filter inside :) with 4k of course?
Do you guys get paid for this? this top notch stuff , great work guys.
Not really... which is what makes them even more astounding!!! Thanks for watching Supernova1976
Chris@TCSTV
If it's between lx10 or the rx100 iv (I can't afford the v) which is a better camera?
WOOO so happy for another video :)
This was great guys... super entertaining and informative!!
why you didn't test the post focus option on panasonic??

Also does the RX100v actually do 960fps slo mo?
totally lol rx100 is lame because of the over heating issue
The only condition where the RX100 V won't overheat...
I'M KIDDING, I'm kidding... I really want an RX100V... So much money. :(
Great comparison and fun comments. Very glad that Nicholson didn't get either of you in the snow maze.
you guys are a riot! great reviews, with entertainment value!
You guys are awesome. Loved the review
"Lick the outside of it and freeze it to my skin", lol. Nice hat. Love the video guys. Informative and fun.
Did they mention S-log in Sony? Dynamic range in video? Or I missed that?
2 mm is a big difference when every inches counts, and I'm not just talking about the camera and its lens either. =P
It makes a big difference at the wide end, but not that much at the long end.
That's what she said! ;P

Thanks
Mark
What's the difference between these and the TZ100/200? Apart from the lens range
HAHAHAHA, I had a feeling you guys would have Pho! another great video guys, love the humor!
I am a HUUUGE fan of lounge/chillout and 1:08 is such a glorious track.
Hope Chris asked before he borrowed his girlfriend's bobble hat
Totally did and she was fine with it. I'm not giving it back though.
Chris @ TCSTV
And she's probably fine with that too... :D
I have a Samsung NX500 APS-C with a 30mm f2 lens, would it be worth to swap to a Sony RX100V for travel video work?
Shooting in the hood! I love it!! Great episode guys!!!
What about Sony's overheating issue, why they didnt tackle that?
The snowed in maze and hotel scenes in the Shining were filmed at Elstree studios in London with artificial snow. The hotel interiors on the sound stages there.
Both are true entertainers - they do anything to spice up their reviews. Love you!
Absolutely! We will do anything for your entertainment... anything...
Chris@TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV Next bowls of Pho will be on me. You guys are the best!
Can you guys do a comparison using the Panasonic Lumix zs1000?
The continuous auto focus reliability can be overcome by shooting in single point or manual.
you guys are hilarious… love these two cameras n you 2 :D
Why don't you do shootouts in the store? I think it would be very cool. so many objects with tons of detail.
It's extremely difficult to shoot more than outros and B-Roll in the store, as customers are usually trying to talk to us while filming. Maybe we'll do one after the store closes one of these days...

I meant off hours of course. why freeze your butts when you have a store that is full of lighting equipment.
in any way, love them any way you do them.
You guys are the best ;)
can i ask you something, what the brand of this boots?
just one question, will Lx100 overheat when shooting 4k videos?
Get'm Jordan! Dang it's cold out there. I'm freezing just watching this.
That intro was awesome!
"When I'm shooting I'm looking for anything... phallic."
XD
You two are hilarious. I love this format.
always love your videos! your brutal honesty on your reviews is refreshing and insightful. i'm in the market for a simple camera that can shoot 120fps without breaking my piggy bank. i've considered going as far as getting a6300 or a6500. i just want something i can shoot some professional looking slow motion with. the end game being, hopefully, shooting some amateur music videos for local talent/ friends. the camera's main purpose will be capturing slow motion at 120fps and i haven't been able to find a camera or camcorder that has had the reviews the rx100 v has received or even in this price range. do you have any suggestions i can look at for more options? budget range tops out around $1,000 usd. thank you! keep up the awesome work! always a joy to watch!
Any ideas? Anybody? Thanks!
Thanks for the video guys. Get comparison.
The Nikon DL cameras are rumored to start shipping in a month or so :)
they've been saying that for half a year now.
it's been announced almost a year ago!
Very important: No overheating problem at all. Hurray!
And here I thought that camera measuring in the cold can only lead to dissapointment. Also, touching tips at 10:00.
Hello
Specs-wise can panasonic lx-10 compete with sony A7 I with kit lens?
Looking forward for your answers
On image quality, I’d take the full frame camera, even with the kit lens, all day long over a 1in sensor any day. For pocket-ability and no fuss with serviceable quality use the 1in pocketable point and shoot.
15:17 So typical of those who complain about viewfinders... they almost never use them.
Didn't realize you guys were from the Calgary store. I bought my Sony a7ii from there!! I can't go in any camera stores for a while though. Always spend too much money.
you guys are awesome. wish I was up there to visit your store.
Please tell me none of the cameras overheated?
Sony not changing the body is very nice for under water photographers because they don't need to get a new and potentially very expensive housing every time they upgrade their camera.
I guess you can't test overheating.
Love the review just subscribed- What Lav Mics are you guys using?
Hey guys, how do you think the lx100 compares to these 2?
The Sony RX100 M1 was made in Japan, the subsequent ones made in China. Do you think that makes a difference?
When are you going to review a99 ii?
I wish all camera shootouts were like this.
