Panasonic ZS100/TZ100 Hands-On Field Test

  • For well over a decade, Panasonic were renowned for their travel zoom series. These small cameras with big zooms were perfect for travel and family photography, but their small sensors were restrictive for more creative photographers. Now, the new ZS100/TZ100 brings a much larger one inch sensor to the mix, while maintaining a big 10X zoom. Is this the new standard for travel cameras?

A few years back I was looking for a travel camera and found TCSTV which produced enjoyable, informative, and (for me) understandable reviews. Using your videos to develop my shortlist I eventually bought the model you reviewed here (TZ100 here in the UK). I agree with your comments about gripping the camera, and I find that I use both hands to hold it - mainly because I'm short sighted and with my glasses I don't get on with the view finder at all so I compose my shots via the back screen.

Have Jordan considered reviewing the JVC LS300? After the last FW update, I feel like it has been gaining some attention and it seems to have a nice DR and colours, it's also inusitated the fact that is uses a S35 sensor AND Micro4/3 mount, plus it sits below the FS5. A lot of 3rd party's lenses cover S35 and Micro4/3 mount seems capable of dealing with S35 image circle, this is a really interesring camera.

  • @yippie6862
    @yippie6862 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The main reason I didn't buy the ZS100 was the lack of front and rear grip. This camera is pretty smooth and slippery so it was a deal breaker for me. I really don't understand what Panasonic was thinking. The same applies to the front of the Sony RX100. I know they are going for clean sleek looks but I don't think a grip is going to ruin that. They are not sexy cameras to begin with so a grip can't ruin them. Anyways, just my 2 cents. Good review guys.

98% of the comments are about the baby....LOL. Great camera, baby and review. I purchased one for my UK/Paris Holiday and it did not let me down. It beat taking my Canon 1DX with 3 lenses, far too much to handle and keep safe. The TZ100, lived in my jacket pocket and daily got charged via a portable powerbank when on the move. No need for extra kit, just one camera with everything I needed.

An excellent review.. very well done..and your little girl seemed to enjoy it too..!../.. I have the TZ-100 (UK) and am getting very good results .. I agree with the rubber grips issue but I always use a 'pistol grip'- tripod' - I also have Sony apsc and full frame .. but the 'pocketable' TZ does everything so well .. that this is the camera that is getting most use...Cheers from Dj... l bought this little cam specifically for concert photography. It is small, not flashy, and I took it to Guns N Roses in Vegas. It did ok, but obviously nowhere close to m43 results I had had before in same time of event. But they will always let you in with it. As for video, Jordan did not mention it but I read somewhere that 5 Axis Image Stabilization only works for 1080P mode, not in 4K mode, so the 1080p handheld image would be more stable. Good thing about 4K video is that your zoom gets extended to 370mm at tele end so it was of a benefit to me at the concert.

at 9:54 where you compare the noise in high iso, the picture from the zs60 on the left looks quite a bit softer than the zs100 but not because it´s noisier, but because it is not in focus properly. when you look at the net on the background on the shoe it actually is in focus.
    thought it might be important.

I just purchased this camera and chose it over the LX10 really because of the zoom. I assume I can zoom to a good portrait focal length which some experts have said is in the 90 to 100 mm range (where the LX10 stops at 70). Cant wait to try the burst modes. This will be my first camera other than an iphone in years.

    What's going on at 8:14 / 8:15 ? Framedrop?
At 12:50 you can see the AF pumping between Jordan and the background. Is there no face detection?

Hi Jordan! another great video. When you reviewed the video aspects of the ZS100, I would have loved to have seen an annotation link to "Microphone Wind Noise & Steps to Prevent/Remove." For example, Chris, in one scene, was cupping his hand over the lav mic to prevent wind noise. You can dead kitten a lav mic or dead cat / blimp / dead wombat a shotgun mic; I'm sure viewers would love to see tricks for built-in mics.
perhaps a click link to an FS5 review too, when the intro card says, "filmed on the FS5." I love the FS5; great autofocus, slow motion & light weight, but it's not for everyone; eg, many cinematographers prefer heavier, more stationary cameras, with more film features.
    thanks!

Thank you a lot!!! I was using a G7X mk1 but I was looking for a longer zoom range. For the compromise of lowlight quality i know i will use my fullframe with my lovely lens 20, 35 and 50mm. I was just thinking on zs100 against zs60 and finally i decided for the smaller sensor at this time! (and the FZ300 also looks good for no serious commitment but i prefer the smaller body).
PS For 1" sensor my prefered one was Nikon DL 18-50, i love wide angle and image stabilization, but it seems wil be on sale only in 2017. Then i saw the Sony X3000 and AS300 action cams with optical stabilization and it looks great for me.

I did a comparison with lumix gx9+140mm and I was impress with tz100 image quality in low light, almost the same detail at 250mm, suffers a bit in color accuracy and dinamic range, wide open performs great, I think its near a m43 system with decent light in an impressive small package. I wasnt impress with autofocus in video, Im not sure why sometimes starts hunting in a 180 pan even in daylight. The 2x digital zoom and even 4x can help to read something in the 1000m territory but I would stick to the 250-500mm for extreme usable zoom. At 250mm its very useful for birds that come close. The tz200 can give more zoom but loses aperture turning it hungry for more light and the bokeh effect its more difficult to achieve. Price is a bit high but can do great things for a pocket camera.

I am interested in GX 80 too. That's the camera i am looking into currently. I need something for both great photo and video. And it has to be on compact side, suitable for traveling. Really have a hard time making up my mind. #help

Thanks for the review. You say that the video stabilization is excellent but I see no evidence of it. Indeed we know already that on the ZS100 it is completely disabled in 4k. Image Stab is a really important feature of any half decent compact because so many people use it for travel, vlogging and video. The best way to test image stab is to select 1080, point the camera away from you with the widest angle then walk slowly and steadily, then secondly do a slow horizontal pan to test for jitters. I suspect that the ZS actually has very poor Image stab and have yet to see a single clip anywhere on youtube where it is smooth. Bear in mind that there are at least 8 other similarly priced cameras that have superb stabilization, including the RX100, GX85 and even the tiny, old, cheap Sony HX20V which has incredible stabilization. The reason I ask is because image stab is the number one priority for travel videos, all other things being equal! Thanks for your time.
