- A guide to spearfishing at Aberffraw, North Wales, one of the best marks on the Isle of Anglesey
Tips and tactics of how to spearfish large Sea Bass, as well as spearfishing for flatfish (Plaice) and freediving with Thornback Rays
Covering shallows stalking (Aguatto) at low tide and on the ebb tide and hunting Bass on breath hold (Aspetto)
I now run spearfishing coaching days in the North Wales area, focused on improving hunting technique and tactics, if you're interested add me on IG (@Jack_Metcalfe_3) and drop me a message - กีฬา
great video, thanks for sharing your tips
Had my second ever go at spearfishing the other day at this mark. I stayed to the left of the church and Saw lots of lobster just undersize walking out in the open. Had a chance to spear a nice bass in the shallows but when I pulled the trigger the safety was on. Gutting but one step closer to my first fish. Thanks for the tips 👍
@@georgeworsley2601 you’ll have it cracked soon. My first season I shot 4 Bass in 20ish sessions, barely even saw them, nowadays see dozens every time I’m out
Time in the water will hone your hunting strategies
Well done!!!
Brilliant 👏🏼
Great educational content Jack, really enjoyed it. Lovely pair of bass!
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope to see you in North Wales at some point
Great to see you putting content out and enjoying yourself. If you are ever in the lizard in Cornwall get in touch and I’ll show you around some great spots.
Hopefully will be at some point, have heard big things about that area
“Spearfishing is a bit like sex, sometimes you’ve gotta take your time and you get better results” the epitome of educational content.
Its nothing like sex, I go spearfishing at least 3 times a week in summer 😂
@@carlhescornish and I’m in the water for 3hr + 😂
@@carlhescornish 😂 😂 😂 got to balance it out in winter then 😂

Love the educational voice over. Very informative. Keep the videos coming
awesome vid as always
A really interesting vid. As a shore angler it's great to get the perspective of a spear fishermen. Fascinating stuff and keep up the good work 👍
Spearfishing completely changed how I approach line fishing, have been a lot more successful since seeing how fish behave underwater
Hoping to get there this Sunday.
I was going to come up on tuesday but got dragged off somewhere else! Very upset I didn't go now haha
This session was Tuesday evening haha, had 8-10m vis in places
Great vid 👌🏾 Seals often year thornback rays. Fairly often they take them once you’ve hooked them while fishing
That’s interesting, I’m amazed there’s any left, must be so easy for a seal to catch

Plenty around that area and Ty Croes
I was in west Wales last weekend and was seasick on every dive. First time that's happened! Bleuurgh. Do you ever experience this, and what, if any, precautions can you recommend beyond not diving?!
Had it in Indonesia once. The first few times I speared off Wales was dizzy for days afterwards, found that swimming to an area that’s rocks and not kelp helps
The kelp chaotically wafting everywhere tends to make it worse
@@jackmetcalfe8542Yes, that's precisely what I thought. It kills my sense of perspective and 'balance' 😂
Well, I am hitting Anglesey in a week or so, and will stick to my flatties hunting - that's what I love to do!
@@JackAcid July can be superb for Plaice, Enjoy!!
Excellent content enjoyed that. Subbed 👏👍
Good to hear, hope you enjoy the next videos
alright mate, wots the best way to weight yourself for this, how to find how much lead you need on your belt?
Get out there.
Every vessel is unique, sunny day like this just get in with a 5mm and pick some rock up and see how you hang in the water column.
Weight is best adjusted to the hunting depth, I wear a belt and a vest, meaning I can remove the vest and attach it to my float when diving deeper
In this session I'm using 12kg of lead, and an 8mm wetsuit top & bottoms. Am 6'1 and 83kg myself
On deeper dives in a 7/5mm wetsuit I often wear as little as 5kg
@@jackmetcalfe8542 Would you be positively buoyant at the surface with 12kg.
@@jackmetcalfe8542 So does this mean you are positively buoyant when at the surface. Do you have to tread water to keep you head out when breathing.
@@andjjones9728 with this set up I am neutrally bouyant at 5 meters. An 8mm wetsuit is extremely thick and no one else I know wears one
A suit this thick and that much lead makes Spearfishing much more tiring, however I’m exceptionally physically fit and also get cold fast so prioritise being warm over anything else
I do NOT recommend this set up for others!! Finding the right weighting takes lots of practice and you just need to get out regularly and see what’s best for you
I leave the big Bass as they are the breeders and being one of the slowest growing fish off our shores, find it better to keep the 3-5lbers.
An understandable choice, interestingly this particular fish didn’t appear anywhere near as big as it was, and the smaller one had much better meat
@@jackmetcalfe8542 8lb is a rare bass these days. In America they use size slots. Return the large and small fish makes a healthy fishery long term.
@@nospoon4799 shooting larger fish is extremely difficult - most spearfishermen will never get a fish like this, they’re so skittish. Spearing really doesn’t present any threat to fish populations, it’s simply too difficult and too conditions dependent
Interestingly I thought this fish was around the 5lb mark when I saw it, judging size underwater is extremely hard
Why kill the wrasse/and the breeders.U 2 not welcome on Anglesey.
@@keithowen7331 you’re clearly a local given that you’re still texting as people did before smartphones were invented 😂
@@jackmetcalfe8542 Why kill the wrasse though? They aren't good eating at all.
@@nospoon4799 I’ve personally never shot one, they seem like pet fish underwater and I think it’s unsporting
Some southern europeans say they’re good eating so perhaps we just don’t know how to prepare then well here
