Spearfishing on the Isle of Skye (Part 1)

  • In June 2022 I had a superb Spearfishing trip to the Isle of Skye, one of the Inner Hebrides islands off the west coast of Scotland. The visibility was generally excellent, and large numbers of Pollock and Coalfish were present. I was also fortunate to see plenty of Grey Seals and Common Seals, as well as Puffins, Guilemots and other diving birds.
    Aaron, who runs the Skye Spearfishing channel (see link below), kindly took us out on his new boat and gave us plenty of tips, check out his channel for more content.
    Spearfishing in Scotland can be pretty tough, with most of the fish being fairly deep compared to the rest of the UK and a limited range of species (Pollock and Coalfish are the main species present). Water temperatures are also much lower, during the week I was on Skye 11-12 degrees.

    Thank you for your nice video. I'm french and spearfish here but I went to Ile Of Skye and it's the most stuning and beautiful seascapes I've ever seen. Thank you for showing me what it looks like under the sea. I wish I spearfish there when I'll be back for hollidays. (sorry for my bad english).

      Thank you! Diving in Scotland is incredible, so much marine life around. I believe there’s a number of species that live at deeper depths than I’m currently diving to so that’s motivation to improve

    Awesome vid mate once again! Heading to Skye on the 29th, huge amounts of Coaly last time I was there but didn’t see many pollock! Any tips, tricks or marks you had would be ace!

    • @jackmetcalfe8542
      @jackmetcalfe8542  ปีที่แล้ว

      Seemed to work best keeping moving until we dropped onto fish, a lot of marks were barren and others had loads of Pollock. I’ve definitely found that pollock will move in quite quickly if they’re in the area, so if nothing has appeared after 30-35 seconds on the bottom I head back up to avoid wasting energy

      Generally the northern parts of the island seemed to hold more fish, and had better visibility. However I would reccomend asking Syke Spearfishing, I've only done around 10 dives off Skye whereas he lives there and has a superb knowlege of the island

    Nice video. May I ask what would be the minimum depth to shoot pollock on Sky. I'm on the second half of the bridge so don't dive very deep any longer- hence asking:)

    • @jackmetcalfe8542
      @jackmetcalfe8542  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen decent fish in 8 meters, although have seen far more good fish deeper than that. Aaron (who does the Skye Spearfishing channel) has shot some very large Pollock in 5-8 meters so they do definately come into the shallows at times
