lovin it mate, Ive speared for 30 years and always get my Donkey Bass in the shallow weeds, Lace weed is great for ambushing, very rarely need to dive. Saw a shoal of Giltheads yesterday just couldnt get a clean chance on em, but, i know their mark now, had 1 last year. hopefully a few this season. I love the shallows, so beautiful at the mo.
Great vid, gave me wings as I am known as ‘death from above’ as I don’t tend to do much breath hold stuff…interesting to hear your slack tide theory, which is the direct opposite of what I tended to believe/do…cheers,see you on The Llyn !
Such fantastic videos you put out. Im actually going to north Wales this weekend for some rock climbing but going to take my spearing gear with me. Iv never been to north Wales before as i normally go to Pembroke. Without giving your spots away can you share any general areas you would recommend for a traveling spearo. Regards Craig
Used to do a lot of climbing in N Wales, was the reason I moved to the area! The W coast of Anglesey is good but dependant on the wind, Treudder Bay area holds plenty of fish. N coast of the Llyn has better vis if there's an onshore wind, but be really careful of currents around the points and headlands Generally the N and E coast of Anglesey have poor vis and are best avoided unless there's a particularly small tide
@@jackmetcalfe8542 amazing, thanks for the advice. I do a lot of sailing so I'm pretty good at reading the tidal steams so shouldn't get caught out with currents. Maybe I'll see you at a crag with some ropes or in the sea with some rubber bands then. If you want a dive buddy this weekend give me a shout 👍 thanks again
Hey mate, great videos, I've fished bass in north wales the last few years and next step is to spear one. If you're up that way this summer and fancy a dive / sharing some tips that would be great.
Maxime Blondel is a brilliant coach, I’d recommend him (The Frenchman Spearfishing). In N Wales have a look at Adventures Per Mare, they do some introductory Spearfishing packages too
You'll have to come and try some cornish flounder mate, they are great 😁 Awesome video bro, I love stalking the shallows for big bass that are hiding/resting up. Keep smashing it dude 💪
Great video, very informative and entertaining. I would like to make your viewers aware that the very big bass are the females that produce most of the eggs that sustain the species. Nothing against spear fishing for bass, but, assuming you care about conservation, please don't kill those big girls. The 45cm to 55cm fish make better eating anyway.
Hi Jack, really enjoying your videos, I live on the North side of Anglesey and thinking of giving spear fishing a try, I also have a boat and have some marks I think would be perfect for shallow spear fishing bass. I need to get myself a spear gun, what would you recommend? all the best mate, Gareth.
For shallows stalking a 70cm gun with single 16mm band would be perfect My main gun is 85cm and too long for Anglesey, I often miss out on fish as tracking is slow
Love watching your videos, I like the way you explain why you do certain things, it all helps other spearos to learn, good job mate, just out of interest , what gopro editing software do you use, i struggle with mine,
Glad you enjoyed it. Always trying to add value, making videos is about a lot more than showing off the catch and playing some music! I use the most basic setup imaginable - GoPro Hero4 and Windows Movie Maker Content and voiceover is more important than a fancy edit
have you tried the Narrows or the kelpy shallow waters the beach end of Starvation Island? had a few nice bass in around 2 foot of water but need to be very stealthy!
Always thought about Starvation, a long walk to get there though?? It’s exactly the sort of place I’ve been having fish, the only structure/kelp in a big area of flat sand
@jackmetcalfe8542 I was at the search and rescue base for just over 5 years. The narrows are interesting with a small wreck on the Holy Island side and there's another wreck just over half way to Starvation Island.
@@johnno952 ah yes I’ve been in the narrows, only seen small bass there, I think the big ones dislike expending energy in that current Whereabouts is the wreck you mention off the main beach? I absolutely love diving wrecks!
@@jackmetcalfe8542 it's maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the way from the Narrows to Starvation Island. Should be able to make it out on Google Earth, not that that existed when I last dived it! I'm in Aus now..
I was in the water lots in the area at the same time and saw a huge amount of thornback rays which id never seen, however, just been for a drive and they are all gone. I reckon they might have been breeding? There are a shit load of jellysifsh now whilst none a fortnight ago
Really like your vids jack. Second year spearing and already done some of those tips instinctively so nice to have someone else confirm the same. I spent quite a while lurking really slowly right at the beginning of the season and missed a big bass due to taking too long to aim and shoot. Do you lurk with gun extended or by your side and then extend?
I have it half extended, sometimes holding it with both hands like an assault rifle, this means you can track really fast. Shot my PB Bass in Ireland like that last August
You do realise that I’m not an idiot and as I run one of the most viewed UK Spearfishing channels ensure that I don’t nail 5 bass a day then upload the footage It should be VERY obvious due to the differences in visibility and speargun setup that the clips shown in this video are taken on a number of different days It is a source of great frustration to me that people post comments such as yours without having watched the video properly
@@jackmetcalfe8542 You do not have to be "an idiot" to not be aware of regulations. Rather than saying that you wouldn't upload that you kept more than two fish per day (which suggests you do actually take more than two per day), you could take the responsible line as a role model and explain the regs to people less experienced than yourself.

I’ve seen giltheads but from above, thought they were small bass with strange pectoral fins! Such a cool fish though
Cheers mate, really liked the video
