If you notice in the song, he asks for mercy from the Lord but not the court. He knew before he kicked in the door that he was going to go to jail for what he was about to do. He wasnt concerned with that. He willingly sacrificed his freedom for hers. Now his only concern is that he receives mercy, in the end, from God.
You are right! The thing a country man has to be concerned about is if she is going to listen. Most of us will get out and help or try to stop it from happening.
I come from a long line of rednecks/country folk on both sides of my family. You're right when they say to wait in the truck, shit is about to go down. Most times, when it comes to domestic assault, the offender will get a light sentence for what they've done and when they get out, will be even more abusive to the girl. This is a fact. Once the courts don't do much about it, then , yea, country folk will definitely instill their own justice on the bastard. Country folk generally will not put up with that kind of abuse on women, especially their own, whether it's a sister, etc..they will mete out their own justice. Also, fyi, I was once like this girl in the music video many yrs ago. I was working and would go to work with bruises around my neck, face, etc. and was pregnant too at the same time. My co workers hated his guts for what they saw what he'd done to me. I tried to hide the bruises but it's hard to do and I still had to work.
I'm not a great country fan, but I listened and watched the music video one day. Always considered my self hard core being a military vet. It actually brought me to tears, thinking of the possibility of that being my daughter someday. I would have done the same thing. The only difference is I would have made him suffer more before killing him.
Cops do not help those of us in domestic violence situations. This, is what a real man does. Southern justice at its finest. Proud Louisiana girl here.
This is based on true a true story. The guy did 20 for it. If your from the south you know what wait in the truck means. The Judge under the seat lyrics, references a gun that is actually called the judge. It can take regular bullets or a shotgun shell
She continues to "waiting in the truck" after 60 months they are both doing the time. She is committed to him now. She is waiting or him to be released and what a reunion that will be. She's even driving his truck and keeping it safe for him. That's a good woman right there. It's jsut a pity her drunk ass husband couldn't see that, he could have saved everyone a lot of trouble.
Been there.. Many nights set up waiting for him to come in his mood. THOUGHT I COULD NOT SURVIVE WITH 3.CHILDREN BUT I DID FINALLY GOT AWAY FROM HIM IT WAS HARD😊
Also please notice that he did not light the cigarette bc he smoked the one that the guy had been smoking... Love it!! Also the girl has his truck and is still waiting...
Hardy is a FANTASTIC song writer. He actually wrote 10 number 1 songs in 2021 (recorded by Morgan Wallen, Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line etc etc) listen to as much of him as you can. “Mockingbird & the Crow” “A Rock” “Rednecker” “Truckbed” “Give Heaven Some Hell” all recorded by him. The very first time i heard this song, it gave me head to toe chills, as a DV survivor, it STILL gives me those chills EVERY time I hear it, DV survivors can relate! 🙏❤️😢
On a deeper level, she was serving a life sentence with an abusive man until he came along, he sacrificed his freedom so she could finally be free. They basically swapped roles in the story.
This song is based on a true story of a friend of Hardy’s who did 20 years and she waited for him to get out….. The guy grew up in an abusive home where I think the man eventually killed the mom. I have to assume he saw his mom standing in that road that night and saw the man in that trailer I get it
Grow a pair, Doug ! Be prepared son !!! We need MEN not men !! I have 4 daughters and have had 2 wait in the truck moments !!! We call it " reading from the goodbook " Our women our precious and a treasure!!! Come on guys STAND UP !!!!
My cousin is currently in prison for this reason. A man punched a woman at a bar and he got up and with one punch he killed the man. My cousin is a combat vet so he knows where to hit. He didn’t get life though. Just 10 years with parole
Not you? Christian, me too. Am I my brothers keeper, yes! No greater love than to lay down your life for a brother or sister. In the heat of the moment, count me in with be Hardy’s cell mate. He traded his freedom for hers. 100% worth it! When good men do nothing……if that was your sister in that road, your daughter or mom. There is no justice any more, it’s broken, it’s just US! Firefighter for 13 years, ems for 30, no different than running into a burning building in my view! Wait in the truck hun, freedom is on the way! Fear no judge, only the judge in heaven. What he does with me is up to him.
Man what you said about the story’s with country. I grew up on it from my parents. And very quickly learned and found my love of rap music in 1987. When rappers told a story and just just use words that rhyme. Just paint me a picture in my mind while I’m listening to you.
The first time I saw this video I thought if he had at least let him reach the shotgun, or flipped him over so he didn't shoot him in the back.... But then I remember he busted down his door and had a weapon, so the intent was clear. Awesome video that makes you think.
I think I love these reaction videos because I see myself in the 80S listening to rap for the first time. Of course we didn’t have phones to make reaction videos yet, but you gen xers know what I’m talking about. Two Live Crew forever.
I was born and raised in fort myers fl. I moved to North Carolina to a small town of 372 people. When I was walking they would stop and ask if I needed a ride. I was like ah no. Lol 10 years later I'm stopping and asking if they are OK or if they need a ride. Lol Florida is bad.i would not talk to anyone there here I see someone and say hi how are ya today lol it's night and day. I love my small mountain town
one of the things i love too is at the end she’s singing “have mercy on me” as well because maybe she feels like she’s a part of the piece of shits death or the hardy character doing time? this song is damn near perfect
1000 % agree!! Unfortunately, calling the cops only infuriates the abuser more and it’s even worse the next time - so happy in this song she’ll never have a “next time”
@rhondawillems1203 Yep. It is unbelievably rare for an abuser to change. The "I will find you and kill you" have been proven to be the truth. Short of changing your name, creating fake documents and hiding for the rest of your life, you are still in danger. I'm a retired Trauma Counselor and abusers know exactly what to say to trick the counselors or whoever they talk to. People wonder why we don't leave but have never taken the time to learn about DV...if they did they wouldn't ask that. If this was a true story, Hardy's character just saved who knows how many women from being abused or killed. When I first saw this I felt like I had been punched in the stomach...it really got to me. But the line "it was worth it" settled me down and he became an angel in my book. I never wanted anyone to spend time in prison for protecting me but this song gave a whole new perspective on the word "angel".
@melvance7281 I've got one under the seat and I will never go through DV again. Would I do what he did? Probably. I'm 60 years old, terminally ill and I never have kids. Worst they can do is give me a life sentence and knowing my sense of humor, I probably would bust out laughing when I'm informed that I am sentenced to life! I can save someone, or more than one, and not really end up in a worse situation.
@@melissawitt3773 after being released he continued to harm others before finally overdosing on meth and dying. He lived 15 years longer than my mom did though and that was 15 years too long. He killed her because she wouldn’t steal from the churches treasury to supply his drugs. She was disabled, stood 4ft 11 inches and weighed less than 100 pounds,he was over 6ft and 200 pounds but he waited until she was asleep to stab her through the heart. He moved his mistress into her house less than 24 hours after she died and they stole or sold everything of value she had for drugs and wrote 82,000.00 in checks on her bank account in one weekend of gambling. My mom’s body was in the house for 6 weeks before she smelled to bad and he dumped her remains beside the freeway and let scavenging animals spread her skeleton around hoping she wouldn’t be found. She was identified by dental records and the cross she was wearing. It’s been 30+years and I still miss her every single day.
Everyone country girl knows what "wait in the truck means!" And other than when in this situation and she is so hurt, most of us grab the back up from the rack! Ride or die! 🤘 Especially if its my man that says to wait! Nah. I got your back, baby! Hardy got this shit though!!!!
Southern boys will do this where i live they dont call the cops they take care of stuff themselves to make sure justice will be served if you hurt anyone they know.
I agree with you that there should not have been a jail sentence for him. He should have to pay some penalty, but doing the police/courts job for them should not end like that.
I think the dude in the song did what he did because he'd seen his mom or sister (or himself) 9:41 beaten to a pulp and was finally big enough to stop it. Behavior has consequences way beyond the immediate, sometimes. What you do around or to your kids affects them deeply.

her comment about not knowing if he was an angel ..... he was .... an AVENGING angel ....
Exactly my thoughts!
"I never thought my day of justice would come from a judge under a seat" in the hook refers to the Taurus Judge revolver he shot him with
It’s a great double entendre
I love that line. Not a lot of people get it has a double meaning.
I like how at the end, She drove off in HIS truck!!!... I guess she's still waiting in it!!!!
Born and raised in the south, and when your man says stay in the truck, it’s for a damn good reason
Few people notice she's driving his truck at the end of the story. It's beautiful
I know!!! Kinda trips me out nobody ever says that!
Still waiting in the truck...
I noticed. Believe me I noticed
I have noticed that too.
