    I’ve tested a lot of putters in the store and have owned 5 putters. Including the one I was fitted for. Being fitted is a good thing so you can see your tendencies. However I also learned at the end of the day, you could put the ball in the hole almost every time at your fitting. But things change once it touches grass. If you can’t read slope change on greens, get the green speed down, have greens that are in really good condition…you won’t just be making putts all of a sudden just because you got fitted. So overall, go get fitted sure,but you don’t NEED to. All you really need is to find a putter you like the look/ feel that makes you confident.

      I played a center shafted putter for a while (Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft 10.5C) and had some success. I eventually just found it didn’t suit my eye (found myself wanting to hit it out of the toe) and changed to a single bend mallet (Odyssey Versa Twelve) and haven’t looked back.
      Nothing wrong with a center shaft putter if it works for ya. But they are ugly 😁

      It’s 100 % Indian. Not arrow. Brad faxon can putt well with anything he touches. Soft shaft hard shaft blade mallet doesn’t matter. He won’t be making any more putts bc of this that’s a fact.

      @@rmiller1041 general specs make it easier sure. But when u start talking about launch conditions in this small of a category you may as well forget it. I’ve spent hours and hours with the best players and coaches in the world Phil Kenyan Butch harmon Claude harmon brooks koepka Dustin Johnson Gary woodland Steve Elkington and the list goes on and on. I’m telling you now it’s 99.9 percent Indian. Cam smith will out putt you 100 times out of 100 while using a putter 4 inches too short with 3 degrees too much loft and a lie angle 6 degrees off. And so would every other great putter. Why do u think putting stats Havnt changed since 1950s? Less than 1 stroke had changed on the pga tour in that time frame and the green conditions have been GREATLY improved. There’s a reason strokes gained is the same today as it was then when they had no idea how much loft was good lie angles were everywhere shafts were wooden swing weight was non existent. Thinking what he just did is going to change his putts per round long term is the only idiotic thing in this thread.
      I’m a fan of using it not saying that I think it’s great to understand your patterns and tendencies etc. but it’s not getting the ball in the hole.
      Would u change Steve strickers putter specs since the heel of off the ground and it’s far from ideal and would have red numbers on quintic? Lots of GREAT putters on tour have terrible numbers.

      @@jwild5360I understand the sentiment but you're describing extreme outliers. Tiger can play the most unforgiving irons on the market. That doesn't mean game improvement clubs don't help the average golfer.
      OF COURSE the best of the best can use anything. They'd quickly adjust to make an ill-fitting club work, but that doesn't mean optimization can't improve a normal player's results.
      That being said, I'm deeply pro-change minimization with putters unless you have a TON of practice time. So I agree with you in the sense that you may have compensated over years to your eyes being too inside because of a lie angle too flat (just to take one example). Getting a "perfect fit" could make you worse unless you're patient enough to train away bad habits, which most people aren't.

    The Jailbird in this video in Ian’s hands is the perfect putter for Bermuda greens. On grainy greens, you need the ball to get up on top of the grass quickly then roll. Too low launch on grainy greens will grab the grass more and may cause it to bounce or wiggle in the first 12-18”. On less grainy/tighter grass greens such as bent or poa, you want a lower launch to reduce skid and produce the optimum roll.

  • @matthewkodamaADG
    @matthewkodamaADG ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the data and all the fancy machines, but it can definitely lead to paralysis by analysis. So much of putting is feel and reading greens. It’s great to check your numbers for any flaws from time to time, but if you get lost in the numbers you limit you won’t develop the feel you need to putt your best.

  • @justinm4801

    This is great. I would love to see more putter videos in the future. For how small and simple the putting stroke seems there seems to be infinite variations of putters, more than any other club. The conversation about loft is interesting as i found increasing loft for me helped me make more putts and hit my lines soo much better. Adding loft also helped my alignment as the face didnt always look open. Keep putter videos coming!

    I got fitted at a CC using this tech. Wonderful and truly eye opening. And when you get the right one it’s magic. In my case it was the LAB or the Evnroll Zero. I went with the zero due to feel off the face and more consistent speed than the LAB. Both types are lie angle balanced.

    I have a big align problem, since Odyssey never offer Jailbird for leftys, I put an extension in my versa seven dB extending it from 35" to 38" along with a 15" winn grip 124g. First round playing 9 holes I had 12 putts, im a 14hcp. Im more upright, my eyes comes further back and I see my line and aim more clearly. Lefty with left eye dominance, this helped me. Still want a jailbird though..

    The one part of my game that is excellent is putting. Years ago I went to Orlando for an all day lesson at Mike Bender's academy including a 9 hole playing session and SAM lab. Was putting "lights out" that day, when we did the SAM evaluation it became clear as to why. I had almost zero cut/hook spin... Feel that I am pretty in tune with my putting and can tell that days when I am missing it it's usually because I am not giving it enough loft and putting spin on the ball. That little "skid" is going to equal to missing it right or left depending on my face delivery AND the grain in the green and or slope. It's not that much of a difference but "not that much" can be the difference between making a putt and lipping it out or being short. I have found that I can be off a little bit with the left or right alignment (talking 1/2 a degree) but combine being off 1/2 a degree plus the ball skidding in the wrong direction and you will miss putts.
    I prefer putting with a Ping PLD answer or a Scotty T22 Fastback 1.5. When I am a little off and getting a little skid in the ball I tend to switch out to a Callaway #7 forged/milled with a micro hinge insert. That insert takes off some (not all) of the skid and bad reaction on those days. The problem that I have with that putter is for me its too much "forward spin" for days where I am putting great and delivering the putter to the ball what I consider "neutral" for my optimal strike.
    Glad you guys put out this video because it's 100% spot on to what I have experienced. Again and like you said... the differences are small but that small difference can be the difference between making 10 footers and just missing them.

    Great video Ian and Mike! I’d love for you guys to cover the different face options. I just finished my full bag fitting at my local Club Champion (fantastic experience btw!) and selected a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 11.5. I’ve been putting with Ping Anser putters for the last 30 years - started with a traditional cast, then moved to an isopur 2, and then to a Dale Anser vault 2.0 with a milled face. After trying several of the putters that have the polymer inserts, I concluded, they were just too soft for me and I couldn’t feel the face… not a surprise, since I’ve been putting with a milled putter for a few years. What did surprise me were all of the milled patterns/methods being used across brands and how the patterns dictated firmness, acoustics, etc… lots of factors went into the putter I chose, but evaluating the different face materials and milling patterns was something I really enjoyed.

My putting stats for this year are, 1.81 per hole, 32.67 per round. If i could only get more G.I.R's, it's total rubbish at only 30%, I'm sure I could get my handicap down, it's 15 at the moment.

    I moved into the Mizuno OMOI blade with the plumbers neck (I forget the number they call it) and my putting has never been better!
    My pace control is unbelievable. My misses are very small and in 12-18” radius of the hole. I don’t think I’ll switch out of it for a long time. Maybe for the LA Golf Bel Air but, the sound of that putter is awful. Very clicky

    Can you release the video on the new shaft option fitting in the Champion’s Choice? I have the CC Newport 2+ and also feel the shaft is too soft. My alternate gamer is a Odyssey Double Wide Stroke Lab which is stiffer and counterweighted. I think you alluded to doing the same recipe for the CC. Thanks!!

    do you think that a putter that feels more stable and produces more confidence but has a worse delivery would be better than a putter with a near perfect delivery of the head that led to confidence issues putting

    Put a LA shaft in the Scotty. I’m debating about putting one in my 5.5 now that they offer one.

    Question to be answered, there’s a club champion a few hours away from me in Washington, I need driver shaft fitting for my TSR3 are they the same as you guys fitting wise ?

    Does the ball of choice play any part of the fitting for putters?

    Last I checked with Scotty they didn’t offer different brand grips or shaft options.

    Do like this tech stuff thnx a lot. Like to try things myself, switched lately from flatcat (with 40 grams weight in the handle) to heavier P2 Reflex Tour grip putting grip now....feels with the pencil grip very well and giving me more face angle control somehow imo. I'm playing a Ping Sigma Tyne 4 green dot. What do you think about grips like the P2 grip or Evenroll if I'm right where the shaft is angled in different ?

    Love this content. I pre-ordered the jailbird 380 at 38 inches with the micro hinge insert, website is saying to be shipped 2nd week of September. I’ve been on Quintec at 2ndSwing with my SCOTTY phantom X9.5 and I was launching it too high and had the loft lowered to 2 degrees with a slight forward press it was rolling great.
    Hopefully I’ll be able to get the launch under 2.0 degrees with the Jailbird with a good forward roll. will need to get down to 2ndswing again and try it out

      @@bigdrews366 no. I’m 5 foot 5 1/2 and I pre-ordered mine at 38 inches. It was hitting me in the gut. when I went to 2ndSwing in Delaware I had them cut it down 2 inches to 36 inches and it’s perfect.
      I told him I wanted to add a weighted plug in the grip end. The key was to add extra weight so it remains counterbalanced even though the standard super stroke grip 17 inches is 92g. He found a 50 g plug weight and he wrapped two or three strips of lead tape around it so it fit snug into the butt end.

    You missed one putt..... If you're feeling it , you're sinking it. I learnt to putt for years before playing golf.
    50 pence in the 80s got you all-day at the crazy golf and 10 hole putting green. Putted right handed and left handed.

    One thing I noticed that Ian didn't really say anything about - going to the stability Tour also seems to help his shaft angle at impact, probably aiding launch, and his face at impact seems to move less. Do stock putter shafts really "kick" that much?

    • @ianfrasergolf
      @ianfrasergolf ปีที่แล้ว

      I spoke about that when I talked about how soft the shafts were in the Champions Choice. I talked about wanting to minimize deflection.

    • @zacharymilos392
      @zacharymilos392 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ianfrasergolf and you felt it helped with not just face deflection but also in helping with shaft lean? Those were sold numbers with the 5k.
