  • In the first of a series of videos exploring all things PUTTERS, Donal looks at some of the most popular neck options available.
He looks at what they do to the head, your hand position, which stroke profile they each suit, and much more.

This is so important to putting well yet is scary how few golfers are even aware of this. I used an original Odyssey White Hot #2 blade from 2000 for 19 years. After getting FITTED in 2019 I learned what I personally needed. That White Hot #2 had wayyy too much toe hang for me. The fitting said my stroke would benefit from a mallet or mid-mallet style head that had between 10-40 degrees of toe hang. I wound up buying the Odyssey Stroke Lab #7s and noticed a big improvement over the old #2. HOWEVER… I decided to try some other options for further testing. What I realized - through trial and error - was that the Taylor Made Spider GT Rollback w the slant hosel (they make a single bend too for face weighted/zero toe hang strokes) was significantly better for me than the 7s. It has even less toe hang than the Stroke Lab 7s at 21 degrees (the 7s has between 35 & 40). Also, the way the Spider GT Rollback is weighted is different from the 7s. Most Stroke Labs rely on the disc shaped weights in the heel and toe…. But the Spider GT Rollback is perimeter weighted with an 80g tungsten bar. So the change in weight placement makes the putter itself (when putting) feel entirely different. My experimentation with putters has led to my perfect setup, shaving almost 10 strokes off my score. Why? BC I almost never miss a putt inside of 5 feet. Dialing in your putter and wedges will take more strokes off your game than any driver, woods, etc… It’s all about the short game. I only hit my driver on Par 4’s over 400 yards. Which means I’m only using my driver about 7-9 times per round. 7-9 strokes max. Don’t spend $600 on this years gucci driver. Take that $600 and get fitted for a putter and wedges. Then invest in those. It’s life changing. Last lesson is never stop experimenting. YMMV. But getting fitted is priceless. If you have a straight back and forth putting stroke but use a blade that’s all toe hang, you’re never going to get the results you want. And vice versa. Players with putter arc using a single bend hosel/face balanced putter will always be at a disadvantage. Shafts on drivers, shafts on irons, bounce/grind on wedges, & hosel/length/weighting/head style on putters are the most important factors leading to lowering your score.

For a guy who played for yearsssss with the same putter not knowing a biscuit about neck/ hosel/ degrees you talk a lot like an influencer of a major ……👺

Very interesting! I have a spider putter and when someone taught me how to put straight back and through stroke my putting has been amazing! Now I understand why

Echoing everyone else who appreciates your clear, concise explanations. I literally said "thank you" out loud after you encapsulated the difference btwn single and double bend necks at 4:19

Another great video! First time I’ve heard it explained in really easy to understand ‘user’ terms. I’ll be most likely changing out my putter after this, at the very least testing a different design. Cheers

On fast greens i use a centre shaft bullseye. Which is toe hang, or a pure blade wilson 8802.
Slow greens use a 2ball oddessay.

The Spider X Hydroblast that is shown in the slant neck part is actually not a slant neck it's a flow neck.

Bettinardi makes a spud neck, slant, mini-plumbers and a center shaft. Which neck would promote a putt that goes more left? If my miss is to the right?

I had a putter fitting at one of those big golf stores with sam lab fitting it indicated i had a bit of an ark in my stroke and indicated I needed a mallet face balance with big grip for less to take out the ark would that go against my stroke and be the opposite of what i should get? Thx

Good but what are prices like? I got my two-ball double bend putter still doing its job. I had to cut about 2 or 3 niches and re-grip as I am a short man. Lost the cover but got replacement at fair price.

I just built 2 center shafted putters and put a bend in each , they don't feel solid at impact, should they have straight shafts instead? Does the bend make them unbalanced?can someone please explain why?

Every putter here is not balanced, they offer twist and torque and wobble thus scientifically flawed. A putter that is balanced will seek no direction and the shaft would have no neck as the shaft if in the center of mass would be straight and mass balanced. Best tested putter ever is a mass balanced putter called a HONU so I'd suggest you ck that out. M
