    Who's had a putter fitting, what was the experience like?

    • @lgeiger
      @lgeiger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I have made bad experiences with putter fittings. I got fitted for a mallet first and I was putting horrendous with it. Then they gave me a half-mallet, didn't work either. Maybe the fitter didn't know what he was doing. For me putting is 90% feel, so in the end the most important thing is that I have a putter that feels good. I'm pretty happy with my Odyssey Versa #1 putter I have been using for a few years now. When I miss a putt, I know it's not the putters fault anyway. For me it's hard to find the correct speed with a mallet or a half-mallet, which is the most important thing when putting, because let's be honest, most of us are no pros at green-reading.

      I had a putter fitting done about 6 months ago. It was a old school fitting, more of measurements and scales and a swing meter put on my current putter. Based off my new lie angle(74), loft, and length. I custom ordered my new putter. Obviously practice is always necessary. My whole fitting experience was very insightful. My friends whom I golf with have seen more 1 putts from my game since my putter is fit correctly for me. Getting fit for a putter has changed my game for the better.

      Wasn't fitted into a putter but I had my putter analyzed and optimized. They adjusted the lie and loft with a super slow mo camera.

      We did basic putter fittings in college. Figuring out length, style, toe hang, face balance, etc. I prefer shorter, 33" putters, that are more mallet/face balanced. Also, Peter, we have yet to see you try out a Bettinardi. I have the Model 2 Kuchar Signature and love it. Best feel I've ever tried and I work with golf clubs for a living.

    As an amateur, I've improved my driver swing, and bought a new driver, improved my iron swings and upgraded my irons. While I've vastly improved my putting (marking lines on the ball and standardizing my stroke), I haven't ever hit a putt and thought "my putter let me down just now." From a DIY golfer's perspective, technique > club change.

      This is just simply not true. I started playing 1 year ago with a Wilson beginners set. I had put a better grip on the blade putter of this set and refined my technique over time. Although I was not bad at putting, I got myself a complete new kit 2 weeks ago and also bought an Odyssey DFX #7 Mallet putter. Due to the shape, the balance and the soft inlay, my putting game increased dramatically, without changing my technique. The Mallet shape of this putter head, also fits much better to my straight putting swing than a blade.

    • @DrProfSlugger
      @DrProfSlugger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FlowDesign82 The putter probably fit you and your stroke better. Putters are almost as bad as wedges when it comes to marketing claims. Drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids are the clubs that are going to be the most different when upgrading from a box set to more "premium" clubs. Irons are iffy since there are real differences when moving up from a box set but there are so few differences at the mid and top end lines that an amateur couldn't legitimately tell the difference. Most top-end drivers these days in performance across all brands but they represent the biggest jump.
      Back on to the main point, wedges and putters are hardly different from each other at all price levels. I have no issue if someone wants to buy a beautiful set of MG3 wedges (seriously, they look great), but anyone who thinks that their $200 wedge can outperform the Kirkland Signature that are $50 a piece by a significant margin is full of shit. Same thing goes for putters. Sure, they're different and probably look and feel better, but most average golfers have garbage strokes. The main benefit most of them would see is if they just got a cheap mallet putter.
      On another note, congratulations on the new kit!

    • @FlowDesign82
      @FlowDesign82 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrProfSlugger Of course it all has to do with what fits best to your own technique / stroke. The Odyssey mallet suits me much better and immediately improved my putting. It was not that expensive by the way, but still €140. Coming back to wedges, again, same story as the putter. I had a set of iron Skymax ICE IX-5 wedges (set of 52, 56 and 60 for €120) with my Wilson box set. These were not bad, but the wedges that are included with my new PXG 2021 0211 DC IRONS set, are soooo much better. I'm hitting shots with the PXG wedges that are unbelievable. I never hit shots that good with the Skymax wedges. The PXG were at about €75 per iron, so not that expensive still, but still almost twice the price of the Skymax. However, to me it was worth it and I'm really happy with them. Now that I'm thinking of it, I find the improvement between those wedges to be even much higher than when comparing the Wilson long irons to the PXG long irons. Although the Wilson long irons had graphite shafts and were to flimsy for my swing speed.

    I just can't use anything but a PING Anser style putter. Basically grew up with it. As a kid, I used to tag along with my dad to the driving range. While he hit balls, I would grab his putter and use it on the mini putt course. His putter ended up in my bag as I was learning to play golf and was the only club to stay in the bag for 20+ years. About 4 years ago, I was looking for a new putter and tried everything. I really wanted to try out all the different styles, but everything felt off, so I ended up getting the PING Anser Sigma G.

    I believe good putters (those who know how to read greens well and know how to start a ball on line at the right speed) can use almost any putter. Proper green reading and practice is much more important than the stick you use, in my humble opinion.

    • @Stonemaster33
      @Stonemaster33 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is correct, long story shot when I was young and striping my driver and irons my putting was horrible and cost me. I made it a point in college to practice putting and one thing struck me hard, from jack nicklaus, “putting is an attitude”. I used to hit it to 6ft and be terrified to have to make the putt for the birdie I should make, and then missed. Now putting is by far my strong suit and I can have 20ft for par and I truly believe I am making it. Everytime I stand over over a putt within reason (35ft) I believe I am making it, and I make a lot of putts now.
      I also got into collecting putters as I got into putting, I sold some but have like 25 now of varying expenses and shapes and I have a gamer, but when I practice I will bring 4 and you never know what one wins the practice day.
      At the end of the day, putting is speed control, seeing the line, being able to start it how you see it, and of course, the attitude of a narcissist as the special ingredient. If you can do that and have a decent wedge game your putts per round will be in the 20s regularly.

    I found the putter fitting to be super beneficial. The technology they use gives you a lot of data on your mechanics that you aren’t aware of (ie strike and path). That alone made me a better putter and opened my eyes to different styles of putters. Cheers.

    My putter of choice sort of has a perimeter weighting, all of the toe hang you could ever have, and subsequently a very steep swing arc, and looks a little like you're about to hit the ball with a barge when you set up to it. However, the symmetrical and rectangular head makes aligning putts an entirely new and different game, and it checks off the biggest factor of my club choosing analysis. Yes, the Ping 1-A is the most fun putter in the world

    Honestly Peter, I totally agree, but for example here in the South of Spain, I have looked several times and so far have been unable to find anyone doing putter fitting in a 200km radius. Yet, pretty much all local clubs do fittings for woods and irons. It's a shame because the industry tends to forget about the most important aspect of the game, and there are no experts in putting, neither when it comes to teaching nor fitting.

    Biggest thing for me was selling my toe hand Scotty Cameron blade for the new oddesy face balanced mallet with the cherry red shaft, face balanced was the biggest difference and the mallet is much more forgiving for me, and my lines and stroke now add up in my head!
    Defo try both face balanced and toe hang and see which one you prefer!
    Also moving the ball from middle of stance to now off the front and holding my Finnish when I putt has helped me tremendously, if you finish in same spot every time and hold it does wonders

    Back in the 90's I borrowed three different putters from the pro shop to try them out on the course. On the first hole I grabbed one of the putters and holed a 45 ft putt for birdie. On the second hole I grabbed one of the other putters and holed another 40 footer for birdie. I decided it didn't matter which putter I used, so I kept my old putter. Currently I'm using an Odyssey White Hot OG #1WS Golf Putter and I've had people thank me for the putting display I've put on during the round... I also have a Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Laguna 2.5 at home, but I feel like the ball bounce off of the face when I'm using it, while the Odyssey putter has a much softer feel to it. I've never been fitted for a putter though, but I might consider it in the future if I loose all confidence in my current putter.

    When I bought my latest set of clubs (2016-17 Lynx Predators) I had a few putters to choose from with different head designs, I just stepped onto the indoor test green (carpet) and had a swing. First thing I was looking for was head twisting during the swing (got rid of two straight away because they dragged the head round), the next was the control of the swing and I found I hated the large mallet putter as it felt like I had less control over the pressure I applied and it hit "heavy". I ended up choosing a Lynx Predator P-04 blade putter as it just felt right (doesn't mean I'll get the ball in the hole ever time but it will give me a fighting chance).

I can take an old blade putter 40 years old and have success with it if i just practice and get use to the feel. $300 shaft is ridiculous in my opinion. Genuinely was quite a streaky putter..bought and used many Scotty/Odyssey/TM options...could never get away from pretty good or really hopeless one day to the next...until getting a 36 inch long Evnroll ER2 from Andy Gorman. Now as the old expression goes; "I now only have good days and great days". So maybe revisit one of your videos from a couple of years back and go have a few hours down there..as I firmly believe length of putter and natural posture override all head design/face balance/toe hang/alignment aids/special grips/upcharge shafts 'marketing'.

    I totally agree with your comment about getting fitted for a new Putter, but the problem is that there are so few places that can fit you correctly.
    The best advice, get yourself over to Toronto so that Ian at TXG can fit you for your next Putter👍

    Taylormade Rossa Monte carlo with a center shaft. Love the feel. Might show how poor I am but it is the most expensive club in my bag.

    I putt with an old Acushnet Bulls Eye putter. It has a brass head, and the sweet spot is right where the shaft intersects the head. It is the sweetest feeling putter I've ever used, and I've made more putts with it than any other putter I own. The best thing? I paid $10 for it on eBay. Don't write off old school putters, they might be just what you need.

    Great talking on what I also think is by far the most important club in the bag. I also have never been fitted for a putter. Actually never been fitted for anything in my life. I’ve probably had at least 12 different putters the last 2 months that I’ve been trying out. I’m down to 2, a Toulon Portland style and the newest Scotty Cameron square back 2. I really wish I would have just got fitted cuz I’ve wasted so much money messing around 🤷🏻‍♂️. Great video Mate!!!! Hello from Texas

    The only club in the bag you actually score with: the putter (and maybe an occasional hole-out with a wedge). Only hackers think the driver is the most important club in the bag. Great video! Loving your content (especially all the hilarious stuff you do with Rick Shiels).

    Pete love the ready brek glow near the end. I had a putter fitting using the Edel system and it recommended a 35 inch mallet head putter but I felt really uncomfortable with that swing position and, at that point, had never heard of Edel putters and would have liked to try other makes, on the day, which was not available. My advice would go to a Fitter who doesn't use one makes system then practice the hell out of your new one.
    Hope your back and wrists are healing mate🥰🥰

    Mallet putters roll the ball better, less skipping and jumps off the initial collision with the putter. But mallet putter are harder to aim if you dont know the characteristics for that putter. Blades are easier to aim and hit straight and go where i aim the ball, but will sometimes skip after the collision. Thats been my exerience.

    Putting and Putters is indeed a dark deep rabit hole.
    I've just started to play again in my late 50s after not playing since my teens so about 35-40 years and apart from a handful of rounds in the interim with work colleagues I then haven't hit a ball in over 20 years.
    I still have the same putter I had when I was 8 years old. (AGSpalding Hand Forged steel bladed) which was old when I got it
    When I decided ( or was talked into playng a round a few months ago) I dug out my 25 year old clubs and threw my late fathers putter in the bag along with my putter.
    Which soon fell out of the moth eaten bag which I replace with a ebay purchase.
    On the practice green I was putting better with the old man's bullseye.
    so that what I went with.
    As I had a new bag, After that round the old clubs also had to go (in favour of some S/H callaway Irons a new Driver and Taylormade woods)
    However soon
    I decided the putter wasn't working on subsequent rounds, but instead of reverting to my original (because I'd tricked myself into believing the bullseye was better). I decided to buy a rake of Brass putters off ebay to try. The putter I evetually went with was a "Justin" similar shape to my old putter but fatter. Another month in and it wasn't working which for me is leaving no more than a 3foot or less tap in from 30-40ft and no excuses for missing anything under 6ft.. then 2weeks ago I threw my original putter back in the bag. On the practice green I started to wonder why I ever thought the bullseye was better. The only good thing is that as I didn't pay much for the brass putters as I had to restore them first before I could use them. I now have 4 very nice vintage brass putters to look at and remind me that I learned to putt over 50 years ago and was extremely good at it using my Original Spading Forged steel putter thats most likely older than I am.

    Putter is the most important club in the bag. My long game and iron stroking is fine, my short game and putting need work. I hit a 90 with 45 putts last year and had to change, got myself a odyssey double wide triple track and had my first ever round with no 3+ putts last week.
    The aim is to get a round with 30 or less putts and stay consistently under 35 putts per round 👍🏽

    About a year ago, I started playing golf again after a 5 year absence. My driving and iron play was pretty decent, but my chipping and putting were awful. These last few months the chipping has gotten better but the putting is still awful, averaging 36 putts per round. I've got a blade and a mallet and have been switching back and worth with poor results. I hope this video lesson helps.

    Having used a mallet putter for years; with occasional success, I've recently purchased a wide sole blade putter with a full toe hang. My putting stroke has an arc so hopefully this new putter will keep some of my miss hits going straight - with some practice of course.

    I just switched from a mallet to a blade. For me, I felt like the mallet lacked touch. It literally just hammers through the ball. I was struggling with distance control. I prefer the blade style.

    Another reason for fewer putter fittings than anything else too is that putters tend to stay in the bag for YEARS (unless you’re Pete) while people change drivers and irons far more frequently.

    I tried a mallet for many years and never was more shakey or mishit more putts. Had less to do with the actual tech but more to do with my eye hates it. Even when I know it's more forgiving, it was mostly in my head.
    Waited a while, saved up and got a Newport2 (played in HS with a Ping Anser) and bam, confidence back. Still mishit but much less and making many more.

    Not to be the chess guy who compares everything to chess, but saying the driver is the most important club because of stats is like saying opening prep is the most important chess concept. That might be true for the highest levels, but that's only because their endgames are automatic. The same goes for putters: it's much rarer for a pro to miss a straightforward putt, and it's more likely that they put longshot or hard putts in the cup or near it. If you're 3-putting, the putter is the stick in your bag that's ruining your game
