    A couple of big takeaways (among others)…“When you pull your arms across your body you freeze rotation” and “you need to give your body a reason to rotate.” You guys look at the problem so differently, no one else is close. Great video!!

    This has to be one of your best videos yet. Great explanation of the relationship and contributions of the arms and the body to achieve the best results. Like most of us i thought the hands were much further advanced that you showed, at impact. As you say, just an illusion from the 2d front on camera angle.

    I've been a long time fan of Pete Cowan, and this jives identically at what he teaches, along with loading the shoulders and putting pressure into the ground to generate power when you rotate correctly. It was game changing for me when I understood his approach and how much noise there was in my previous swing and how simple a good swing really is (but very hard to understand and produce).
    One other thing that you didn't talk about (but I think was instrumental in helping me visualize it correctly) is the position and flex of the right hand through the swing and how important it is in stabilizing the head through impact.
    Also, the split hand drill and cross-hand grip drill also really helped me get my club in the right spot on the downswing as it transitions into rotation.

    UPDATE - I tried this at the range yesterday and then I played 9 holes. Your advice help me achieve my best ball striking day ever with my irons. My putting sucked, anything from mid irons to wedges was life changing. The long irons, driver I still need to work on, but I finally learned that I was rotating too early in my DS, so waiting to have my hands down around my waist and right pocket and then turn, help me strike the ball way more consistent and pure.

    After watching hundreds of disjointed and subjective golf instructions online (wreaking havoc on my game). It's refreshing to see real-world data and an objective approach to understanding commonality in pro level swings. All too often the piecemeal TH-cam approach of random click-bait tips and tricks just destroys the overall athletic, rhythmic and synnergetic reality of a golf swing. This is probably the best explanation of the golf swing I've seen. I've been working on this move, and I'm pretty good with it up to the mid irons. I'm still struggling with driver. What's the best ratio of arm drop to rotation with the longer clubs? A video on how much/fast the arms drop in relation to the pivot would be appreciated. Thanks guys. Love the videos.

    Trail side impact makes sense, never thought it that way. It was hard for me to get the club around and in front of my trail leg even as a 4 handicap. I added right side bend to this equation and it all came together since I needed a trigger because the golf swing is only about 1 second. Thank you, best video I've seen out there in the ether.

    Hey boys, do you have a video that describes when and how to trigger hip extension? I’m tall and so focused on folding and tilting to get to impact, that when I try extending I usually move in toward the ball and upward, hitting with the bottom groove. Whereas Pro Golfer finishes in a comfortable extension, I look like I’m doing a single leg deadlift poorly.
    Thanks for the help.

    Any videos on trigger move for starting down swing? I struggle with the slightly lowering pelvis resquaring portion. Been measured on gears and have corrected the backswing work. But my trying to train out the years of coming over the top trigger start. So come in a little steep little direction of pull. causing a Little early extension and shoulder hunching. Leading to a Little shaft vertical/toe down scoop to straighten out ball flight.

    Wow! I have been chasing shaft lean forever and now realize I have been going about it all wrong. This is really enlightening. The only thing I’m a little confused about is that it would almost seem like a back ball position would help achieve this position. I guess this would not allow enough room for the proper body pivot?

    You’re missing a huge component here.
    Along with the trail arm unfolding you must have forearm rotation to get a square club face on a consistent basis.
    The guy on the left is showing all these positions with a cupped left wrist. You won’t have a stitch of consistency if you don’t flatten your wrist. Flat is flat. Cupped is…cupped a lot, a little, more today and less tomorrow. Zero consistency. Flat is flat.

  • @D-Allen
    @D-Allen ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, I have an "Over the top" swing that I have struggled with forever. This may be the reason, if I can just get myself to do this. My "real vs. feel" is so different. I feel like I'm swing In to Out, but my divot shows the opposite. I fail on the dropping the hands part of it. I just don't feel like I can get any power (distance) without firing my arms which then come over the top. 😟

  • @cubfan69kmz85
    @cubfan69kmz85 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey guys, though not in this video, you talked about in a previous video about letting out your lag and not holding angles. Does this include flexion of the left wrist and extension in the right because when I lose these angles it looks like I have a full blown cast with my hands way behind my body at delivery. When I think of keeping the extension in the right wrist my delivery position looks much better. Right now I am only practicing in my garage and back yard and haven’t taken it to the range yet, but my swing looks a heck of a lot better thanks to your videos. 👍 ❤.

    Can you clarify something regarding right elbow and right hip. Obviously in frame of reference, it doesn't get in front of the hip. But from the face on perspective/caddy view (90 degrees to target line), where do you see the trail elbow relative to right hip at impact in the majority of your pros on gears? From 2d, it looks like right hip/right elbow are about the same distance up the line and just slightly behind the ball at impact. Would you concur? Thanks Mike.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Will need to go through the players to verify, but from memory, the elbow is typically behind the hip with both being more than slightly behind the ball.

    Most ground-breaking video out there. Whenever my swing gets off, going back to impact location with my hands in front of the trail hip fixes everything again.
    Does this mean tho that when hitting longer clubs or driver, hip rotation is less at impact? That would be my thought, as the hands are further away from the body, the longer the club the less rotation is needed to reach the same forward position with the hands at impact.

    I’ve watched this twice now and the video leads one to believe that the turn starts when the club is slightly above the 3 o’clock position and happens by the 8 o’clock position and I don’t think there’s a scratch golfer anywhere that waits that long to start the turn. Based on the slow motion videos of tour pros all over the Internet the first move is almost always a recentering motion of the lower body starting to turn, which this video seems to argue against, blaming that appearance on camera angle.. can you actually show this to be the case with Tiger or Rahm or Fitzpatrick or Spieth or choose one or two of your liking?

    Dropping the arms down is so against what you want to do at the top of the swing. It feels like you are not going to get any power. I just feel disconnected when I let my arms fall to that bottom position and feel like I lose momentum to turn into the shaft lean. Can you explain more the connection of allowing your arms to fall down and keeping the momentum without feeling like your body is stalling

  • @GarryLindsay1

    Great lesson. Like many older amateur golfers of middling skill, I try hard to get my weight shifted to the left at the right time and in the right amount. Your explanation of the arm movement downward with the weight shift and hip turn completing the shaft lean and desired contact with the ball is as always eye opening. As noted in a previous comment by danramproject5655, we can get in trouble by turning or rotating the left hip too early. Since you always have the great 3-D avatar images with precise measurement of angles, position and timing in the swing, would you by chance have the timing of the correct sequence combining the downward movement of the arms with the shift of weight on to the left and the bump of the hips 4 to 6 inches toward the target? In other words, to show when the arm movement is too early or too late and not correctly synchronized with the weight shift and hip rotation. I know these things occur in milliseconds, but your equipment can handle that and show at what point each move should occur. Thanks for all you do for us.

  • @TheChrishoughton

    It's unusual to get this amount of description of what is really happening and why these things happen. Most teachers say do this, without explaining why, or the sequencing of movements. I have only just come across your channel and immediately realised that my right elbow was way too far behind on the backswing. This particular lesson has taught me another mistake I was making, in getting the club head too far outside half way through the downswing, thinking that all I had to do was rotate my arms in order to square the club face at impact. Yes, it did square the club face, but I had no shaft lean at impact, so I had to try to manufacture it myself, which led to inconsistent ball striking and loss of penetrating ball flight, which also meant loss of distance. Brilliant channel and thank you for explaining everything in a way that makes sense not the average human.

    The best modern example I’ve seen of this concept of lowering the arms before the pivot is Ludwig Åberg. My pro is trying to get me to lower the arms before turning the shoulders but I find it incredibly difficult to time right. I often send the clubhead crashing into the ground behind the ball which is, as everybody knows, bad.

I’ve played this game for over 4 decades and have fought early extension the whole time. These guys clearly demonstrated the entire sequence, body positioning, arm movement, correct weight transfer through my feet, where the hands are at contact, and where the club should fully release. Great content as always, thanks. Can you explain what is the relationship among shaft lean, swing speed and impact position? It seems to me, in fact, that if I have a swing speed of say 75 mph with a 7 iron I must have less shaft lean at impact than with a pro swing speed of 95 mph otherwise my ball flight would be too low. As a consequence also my start of delivery should happens before my hands reach my rigth leg. Do you have in your database any slow swing speed data? I would love to hear comment on this from you. Thanks for your work.

      yes you need very little shaft lean if you are swinging 75 mph. I would say 5 degrees would be plenty.

    I hated my impact position with no shaft lean. Worked on it for a couple of months and gave the game up due to no improvement from a 9 HC. Haven’t hit a ball for 5 years now. I’m giving this a go. Start the downswing with the arms and then turn the hips to pull the club through. Do I understand this right?

    All I needed to hear was that impact happens on the trail side of your body and it just clicked. Thanks guys. I just added about half a club and my trajectory lowered considerably.

    @AthleticMotionGolf There was a Pros vs Ams video about the Motion of the Right Arm. I don't see that one on the list any longer. That was the most amazing video ever made about the golf swing! Is it available on a paid platform?
    The only way to make that one better is to continue on and show the motion of the right hand during the release, while the Gears program holds the body still. There's an old video on this site where you hosted Monte Scheinblum and he demonstrated his famous "casting" motion. I'd like Gears to prove that is how the right hand works. We've all been taught "wipe the table", but we do it too late. Monte showed the table was upright and to the right of us. It would be awesome if you could put all of that together with Gears. Please....if you'd be willing.

    Great stuff as always...I'm really struggling with getting any shaft lean and it's getting comical how short I'm hitting my short irons and wedges relative to my driver ball speed. One question though, from a sequencing standpoint in reality the body is turning forward prior to the arms lowering in transition, correct? As a result the drill Shaun is doing is mainly a feel and should naturally not actually happen because that would be very difficult to actually do when swinging, correct?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks bud! Regarding the drill, that’s pretty much how it happens in the swing. From the top down to lead arm parallel, all the rotation is basically coming from the pelvis. The spine is staying closed to the pelvis by about the same amount it was at the top. That’s important because that’s window in which the arms lower.

    • @scottfawcett3290
      @scottfawcett3290 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So in reality the body is moving from the top while the arms are dropping vs the rehearsal around 7 minutes in where Shaun is just lowering them with a static body.@@AthleticMotionGolf

      @@scottfawcett3290 exactly. As he says, that’s what happens with no turn, then when the turn is added it all comes together.

    I just saw a video on TH-cam where the gentleman, whose disposition I love btw, talks about how shaft lean is overrated and people with slower swing speeds to average swing speeds should not be thinking about shaft lean. Do you agree with this assertion? To my novice golf knowledge, it makes a heck of a lot of sense to me. I won’t mention his name here, but I am sure you know him as he taught David Toms, I guess. He talks about many thinGs that you guys teach. Very interesting listening to him. I really give the thumbs up to people like this gentleman and you guys for not bowing down to some of the stuff shown on instagram.

      All players should have some sort of shaft lean even if it’s more neutral. Although trying to copy professional players 30% shaft lean might not be optimal for someone who doesn’t have very high club head speed.

    Someone told me that really it’s as simple as your hands are raising and lowering and your body is doing the arching or turning. And when you get the rhythm of both of those down like a hideki drill then that’s when you get a good shot. I almost have to allow my hands to go first or my body stalls. I’ve went down to a 3.2 from this concept. That along with picturing my lead backhand smacking the wall

      So much tension is always seems to be a problem. Kind of like the old song, hold on loosely but don’t let go. Also kind of like a bad relationship, the more you’re trying to force it or control it the worse it is.

    The misconseption of what a projection of a body moving in video has done so much damage to so, so many people trying to get better.
    The top-down view is an eye-opener to many, but unfortunately very rarely available.

    • @PetSKi67

      I’ve created a momentum based idea of how to move the club head, which I may have written to some of your previous videos, which are very accurate and descriptive of what should be happening in a swing.
      If you change the hand path in a faulty manner, the clubhead momentum acts reactively and either drops inside or outside depending on the direction where the hands are moving relative to the center of gravity of the club. Shaft either flattens or steepens.
      Getting the feel dialed in, what’ll happen either way is a key to understnd how the release works and getting shaft lean properly.
      All in all the key element of a good golfswing is rythm. Not how the portions go, 3:1, 2:1 1:1 backswing to downswing till inpact.
      All different tempo relations can be effective and powerfull, but all body parts need to act in proper timing and order sequencing the speed to increase from ground up and back down to the clubhead at impact accordingly.
      If the tempo, which I use for the relative time equation between back swing and down swing, is slower, ie towards 3:1 there is more time to accelerate and it’ll become easier to time the different parts of the motion better.
      John Rahm might be closer to 1:1 than anybody else, cause the shortened back swing of his, but his inner rythm allows him to do so.
