Thank you so much for this tutorial! I am an avid crocheter but I usually stick to making clothes so this was a perfect challenge for me to get outside my comfort zone! I also wanted to note a modification I made that may help people out if they don’t have wire at their disposal. I just doubled up on yarn (using two strands starting at the base of the brim) and it kept the brim of the hat stiff enough to keep its shape!
I used a cardboard circle and then traced a slightly 1/4 inch smaller circle and cut 2 out then glued them together and painted them black which made a perfect brim to crochet around
Thank you it turned out great. Very easy to follow. I only have one problem, how do I get it to stand up without flopping over. I crochet tight and used a worsted weight yarn. Can someone help with this?
This is great! I followed this tutorial “experimentally” as I used chenille wool which is why I had to increase the increases for the hat, and reduce the increases for the brim (a lot of try and error 😅). But all in all this video ist great as a guiding line. My hat now looks like a giant upside down ice waffle, ready to be decorated into a hat fitting the witch of Hansel and Gretel and her house made of sweets 😊🎀🍪🧁🍫🍬
Watching people crochet makes my brain hurt, thinking about doing it without a loom seems so daunting. But your voice makes me feel like I can do it and it's OK to mess up and take time to get it. I don't really get what I'm seeing, but I feel like when I follow as you do it I'll be able to get it cuz your instructions are so clear. Thank you for sharing such wonderful tutorials.
Aw that’s such a nice compliment. Thank you. And Yes, you CAN do it! It definitely takes lots of practice and I am not always that calm when I work haha.
This hat is amazing and the steps are so easy to follow. I made the mistake of using a thinner thread and I've had to add so many rounds and I blew past the stitch count. It's unfortunate but I just continued the pattern and eventually I will get there. Thanks for making the video. To anyone attempting one...check your yarn size first!!
Thanks for the feedback Kimberly! Yes the yarn weigh makes a big difference. Another option is to double up on strands of thread so it’s about as thick as a medium weight.
This makes a great hat. I works also for my all-in-one comfort dolls. Just replace hdc by sc. And start flat until the first brim, after about an inch: the brim must be in circles (close with sl st). The flat start: crochet 2 sc. Ch1 and turn. 2sc in first, 1sc. Ch1 and turn. Etc. After an inch close with sl st.
Just started one for my daughter I find it easier to use a marker when doing a half double it helps a lot .thanks for the great pattern God bless stay safe
I just happened to come across your channel and saw this tutorial on this Witches Hat. I've seen many tutorials on this project, but I have to say that this is by far the cutest one I've ever seen. Well Done 👏
Adorable! I'm making one for my 7 yr old. I'm using thicker yarn and a 5.75 mm hook. For the ridges, I used back post HDC, was easier for me. Love the pattern tho. 💚 Thanks
im almost done with mine! only problem is that its super big and super floppy haha, found out it was using a 5.5 mm rather than your 5 mm lol. and i guess i was doing to too loose, i dont mind it too much, it adds character to me. im a wizard with a extra floppy hat

just about done making a white version of this (making a costume of Siffrin from of stars and time!) and im so happy!!!!! if only i had more daily life events to wear a wizard hat for XD
I LOVE your channel and the videos you make, they are super easy to follow for me as a starter! Do you have any patterns for gloves that dont have fingertips? If you could ever make a video for that I would love to watch it.
I’ve just finished making this and it’s brilliant , I had to adjust it slightly due to having a big head 😂 but I’m so pleased with it , going to add a dangly spider to the top and a ribbon around the band and I’ll be set for Halloween this year 🐈⬛🧙♀️
Floral crafting wire for the brim perhaps? For each ridge too? Might make the hat more formable? Just some thoughts I am thinking of trying...🤔 Happy Halloween 🎃 Thanks for the cool pattern👍
@crochet.with.illjay I just added a few rows of the half triple/ half double with increases. and ya my tension might be a pinch tight. my hat is starting to stand perfectly no starch needed. 😀
I don’t have a video for that, but after rnd 1 or 2 just start with another color and work both at the same time. Keep track of which color is on which rounds.
For people who found the increasing in whichever stitch kind of awkward: What I ended up doing is this (HDC 9, INC) ×2 then, (HDC 5, INC, HDC 10, INC, HDC 5) for the next round for example. I split my "even" rounds up so the increases were kind of offset if that makes sense :)

I got super confused watching this after coming from the pattern. I jumped to where you are showing row 21 since I couldn't quite understand the pattern, and since the pattern does not say to flip the work inside out, I thought I had lost my mind and crocheted the whole thing backwards! I'm going to see if I can figure it out without having to start over and turning it inside out where you do in the video, but man, that threw me for a loop (pun intended)!
@@crochet.with.illjay I'm also a little confused at 10:44. You say to BLO, but are showing going through two loops. I'm just confused what two loops you're going through? I thought BLO was just the one back loop.

I found metal rings at the family dallar there 1.25 you get 3 sizes with it I thought that was great they work very well for the rim of the hat .I have 2 more to make for my granddaughter and grandson .
Im having such trouble pulling my loop through after finishing the first hat ridge, slip stitching the ends, and folding it over. Seems like my loop orientation is flipped from yours: my loop is on the outside once the ridge is folded, and my string is on the inside. And when I try to just slip stitch anyway to move on, it makes this ugly line in the ridge. Am I slip stitching wrong?
I always struggle to get started on something new. After you slip-stitch into the 1st double crochet stitch and chain one, do you go into the same stitch that you just slip stitched into? Idk if that makes sense but I’m having a hard time with starting round 2. I bought the pattern and watched your and other videos and started over and over and I can’t figure it out.
Hi Madisen, we are actually using half-double crochet for most of the rounds. When you start round 2, yes be sure to so a hdc into where the chain is coming out of. Because that was our first st of round1, it will also be first st of round 2.
I know everyone will say “everywhere!!” But when would I ever wear this?! I need help guys ! Bc I want to be one of those girls who wear this hat everywhere

I'm going to try this pattern after I finish a wip... just to verify you doubled up at the brim and not from the top? Thanks!!!
@abbiedigby7662 did you up the size of your hook when you added the 2nd strand and started on the brim?? This is a brilliant idea!
Excellent! I'm knew to any thing yarn 😊 I'm gonna do this!
For anyone confused about row 21 (when you start doing double crochet in the front loop); you should end up with 30 stitches, not 20.
Thank you! I could not figure out what I did wrong! Truly appreciate your comment!
I found wreath rings at the dollar tree and I used the largest one for the brim of my hat and it worked great!
Oh awesome! I would have never thought of that. Thanks for sharing :)
