Hi I love this hat. I have a problem with the brim ... I didn't understand the first round to create single crochet in front loop and then the increases how many and always in front loop?! Sorry ☺️
You’re doing that front loop of each stitch for that first round of the brim only and nothing has changed with the increasing. Just continue doing the same increasing that you start with the body of the hat 👍🏻🖤
Thank you for the tutorial! Definitely gotta change my pattern a bit since I have a VERY thick yarn (15.75 mm hook is what I’m using to give you a size reference) but this is a great starting point

Hello I'm stuck after doing front loop of sc 66 where do I go from here im confused do I do 9 sc , inc and keep doing that row until I get the desired fit
After 9sc, inc repeat (66) I assume you keep increasing until it's the right size, so the next step would be 10sc, inc repeat (72) 2 rounds of 72 sc 11sc, inc repeat (78) 2 rounds of 78 sc 12sc, inc repeat (84) 2 rounds of 84 sc 13sc, inc repeat (90) 2 rounds of 90 sc Just stop at whatever size seems right for you, then add the brim.
Fabulous! Great tutorial - really well explained - ha ha re: and hour - but I can see it could be quick (I must be v. slow crocheter). However, really enjoyed making it, thank you x
Hahaha I’m sorry that it took more than an hour but I bet if you made it again it would take half the time ! So glad you enjoyed it , though, and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know! 😀🤗💕
LOOOOVE this hat!🖤 Exactly what I'm looking for! Love the spooky music, too! LOL when you mentioned the squeaking... That just adds to the spooky atmosphere! Thank you for this pattern... New subbie! 🖤🎃🧙♀️🧹
I don’t know because I focused on just reaching my head CIR (21”) to reach that it was 12 inches for me (before the brim) I think the brim was only a couple of increases. I recommend that you just keep doing the sequence until you reach your desired head measurement.
Figured it out! I'll keep this comment here if anyone has the same issue, but I essentially started with the wrong end of the string with my magic circle. Start the cut off end facing down when you wrap the wool around your fingers to form a magic circle
Really you can use anything you like. I had a chunky yarn at first that I was going to use (I think I mentioned this in the yarn description) but liked the tinsel in the one I ultimately used. If you use the thicker wool , then you won’t need to use 2 strands. I’m thinking about making another with a thicker velour yarn.
You would just have to fasten off after each round and fasten back on with your new color. I would recommend watching videos where people teach how to change color when working in rounds like amigurumi .
I made one to use for my Halloween costume this year, and it was so easy and straightforward! I'm still very much a beginner and it took me a while to master the magic ring, but I was able to finish it in an afternoon! 😊 I did want to ask, how do you feel about people selling hats made using your pattern? I would absolutely give you credit and link to this video, and I would not sell the pattern itself, but I wanted to ask permission first 😊❤️
I need help. Do we repeat rows of 30, 42, 48 stitches once or twice? 5 stich and we increas and we have 42 stich and repeat 42 once or twice? Thank you
I got a set of hooks just like the one you’re using at Hobby Lobby a month ago. the largest size is 6mm and the smallest is 2mm. unfortunately there’s no brand name on it, but it’s a cute little blue case that has all of the hooks plus clippers and a ruler. only $15 :)
Yes, I used two strands. Check out “round one” of the video (there are time stamps in the description box below the video) and you will see how I was using two. If you use red heart super saver, their skeins are usually good for pulling from the center and outside strands. Hope that helps.
No , you continue on with the pattern as normal . 👍🏻 It’s just helping you make a ring big enough to fit the 6sc’s into . You can see how it looks in this video plus other options you could use too , like chaining 2 and starting in the second chain . th-cam.com/video/ICUqDZY1QH0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aCzVagHG2y-vhSDo
@@theanystrom2882 no, you’re working around the chains. Please watch the video I just sent you, you’ll see what I mean. Watch after the magic ring demos where I show other options.
I absolutely love 💗 your channel! I’m a new and very inexperienced beginner...PLEASE create beginner tutorials for hats, scarves, throws so that I can learn from YOU! My daughter, 4 sisters, and friends want to learn from you. I am a disabled veteran; crochet 🧶 brings peaceful relaxation but it’s not easy to learn without thorough teachers like you.
Just wondering if I could use a bulkier yarn instead of doubling the strands? Also curious why you used a 9mm to make the hat, but used a different one for the tutorial?
Sure, you can use a bulkier yarn. I was making one in a bulkier but ran out of yarn. I was using a 9mm with the bulkier yarn. For the tutorial - I used a sport weight yarn which requires a smaller hook. I had run out of the yarn I had for the hat. Use the 9mm with your bulkier yarn and you should be good to go. 👍🏻🧶🖤
When starting the brim, do you continue increasing from where you left off on the hat or do you "restart" and increase as you did to start the hat? This is the only area I'm a bit confused about. (Just finished my round of front loop only stitching and am about to start in on the brim.) Can anyone offer any answers lol. (I'm trying desperately to get this finished by morning!)
I'm having 9 hells of a time trying to get the brim right. I think the yarn I'm using (which I believe is a slightly bulky Caron cake but came to me with no label) is too soft, so the brim just flops. I've got one more trick to try before I give up on this yarn and try a super saver. 😅
Hello I have one question about something in this crochet witch hat pattern.I decided to crochet this witch hat for next Halloween.this crochet witch hat pattern is very great and beautiful.it is a good tutorial at the start of the pattern I understand all the steps sow far.but when I was going to start with the brim I felt stuck and confused.of what to do I understand that we was going to crochet in the front loops and that we was going to do one regular row on the brim at the start.I have 96 stitches I am unsure how I am going to increase.what do you mean by it depends on your stitch count.I don’t know if six stitches and one increase work for me.but in the chart it says 2 increase rows.and 2 regular rows.but if we did 2 regular rows in the beginning of the base dose it mean that we.are going to do 2 regular rows first for the brim too.or was it 1 regular row or one increase row.I tried to find another brim tutorial.and tried to crochet 8 stitches and one increase but that didn’t work.I counted to make sure it was right but ended up with 2 or 3 stitches left I had to many stitches to do it like that. Den I tried to crochet 9 stitches and one increase the same problem I make sure it was right and counted but ended up wrong some stitches left me with 2 stitches .and make me have one stitch instead of a increase.I also tried to do it with 10 stitches and one increase.but the same problem happened 2 stitches left.that made me end up with one stitch instead of a increase and I made sure I counted too.what should I do how dose it work can you please show me how.sow I can continue crocheting this witch hat.anyway thank you for this crocheted witch hat pattern.☺️
You’re just continuing on with the same increase sequence that you were doing with the body of the hat. Nothing different . I said the number may be different depending on how many rounds/increases it took to make it fit around your head circumference before the brim. That number might vary . But just use the same increasing sequence you were doing . 👍🏻
I did it a while back but it looks oretty floppy on the sides. I don t know how to fix it to have it stand straight. Should I use a smaller hook for the sides or use a tighter stich for them? Thank you crochet community. I re did it twice but the rim continues to flop...
I would suggest some liquid stiffener. I’ll probably do a video about this in the Fall (closer to Halloween) but you should be able to find some tutorials on how to stiffen a rim if you need something right now. Here’s a good one. th-cam.com/video/QRDgqC23500/w-d-xo.html And this th-cam.com/video/YVsvUXNtGp4/w-d-xo.html
Wow thank you so much! I'll check it out! I've seen it done in white crocheted ornaments with liquid glue and barnish, but t I was afraid that I might destroy the project. Thank you! I actually needed it for Saturday!
Ok so I made this and all is good to I get to the brim. It keeps wanting to curl up. I even tried to add a wire to manipulate it but it doesn't want to last flat. Had any buddy else had this problem? What can I do?
Maybe you can try to stiffen it with liquid starch. Try a spray like “stiffen quick” I’ll add a link in the description box below. Put some plastic on your table and then place your hat on the table with the brim in the position you want. Spray the brim with stiffener until it’s wet. Wrap a plastic bag around your hand to smooth the stiffener into the fibers. Let dry. Repeat again if necessary.
So- I’m around rows 6-8. And what I’m unsure about with the increase rows is : do you do the increase from 12 to 18 and then 2 more additional rows of 18. So 3 rows of 18. Or is it just 2 ? Help please I’ve been wanting to make one of these for 3 halloweens and finally found a tutorial I can follow
Right, you’ll increase to 18 and then do 2 more rows of 18. So 3 rows of 18 total. Then you’ll increase to 24 and follow that with 2 more rows of 24 . increase row + 2 rows = 3 rows with same number 🖤
l love this so much!! and can't wait to make my own for spring :) but at the beginning of the video you recommend a 9mm hook, and in the video you are using a 6.5mm, which one should l use?
Right , that’s because I was using a finer yarn for the demonstration. I’m sorry if I didn’t clarify that before starting the tutorial. For the pattern and hat that you see , I used a 9mm hook and two strands of yarn. 💕 thank you !! 😀
I have a question when Ur making it to the size u need when your increaseing do u do the next row without increasing then increase again. My hat went a bit of a funny shape. Xx
It’s done in a sequence of three. You do an increase row and then do two more rows with that same number. Example: you increase to 12 . Next , do two rounds with 12. Increase to 15, then do two rounds with 15 . And so on ….
Did you work in the back loop only to start your brim? That helps to bend the hat to start the brim . If your brim is curling I would suggest you get some stiffener spray or liquid starch . I have a link in the description box below the video. Stiffen Quick is a popular product. Spray the brim only in the position you want. Use pins to help if necessary. I would also suggest adding a couple more rows to your brim to make it wider. It will look less like a gnome hat if you do. Hope that helps.
I’m not quite sure what you mean when you say on the back. I would suggest just continuing to work in rounds until it fits. Measure the area you want it to fit and keep crocheting in the round until you reach that measurement.
We were increasing by 6 each time we did an increase round so basically you are just continuing on with wherever you left off on the main portion of the hat . Just keep doing what you were doing with the main hat. That same increase sequence . What number did you finish with before the brim? What sequence were you on ?
Hi! I’m currently making this and I’m wondering for the increases, do you continue the pattern past 9 sc, 1 inc to 10 sc 1 inc, 11 and so on until reaching the desired hat size or does the entire 1-9 increase pattern repeat? Thank you! 🙏
I'm having troubles with the increase . When you're increasing at 18 I was increasing with 24. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Is it a 2 single crochets in each one single crochet?
Hi Ashley 🤗 To go from 18 to 24 , you want to put one single crochet into the next two stitches and then in the 3rd stitch you will put 2 single crochets . Single crochet, single crochet , 2 single crochets . And repeat that all the way around. If you are meaning you were trying to go from 12 to 18 , then you want to do one single crochet in the first stitch and then put 2 in the second stitch all the way around. Hope this helps and if not let me know xx
I would recommend a fabric stiffener . You can brush a little bit of liquid starch on there or use spray starch. Go slowly with the starches because they can add a little film to the yarn which shows up more on black. You can also stiffen it with a diy mixture of equal parts water and glue and brush that onto the brim. Place your hat onto a surface where you can sit it upright and pin the brim into the shape you want … then use one of these methods and set to dry for a few hours 👍🏻💕
That sounds like it’s worth a try - what a great idea . I’d make a mini one and try... I have a small witch hat pattern on my Halloween crow video ... maybe try before investing time and wool on a bigger one. Let me know if it works! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕
Mine was 12 Inches from tip to brim (laying it as if it looks like a cone) but this will vary depending on head circumference , yarn and hook sizes used.
Ahh please help I ended my size at 9 increase. How do I start my brim and where do I increase? In what number stitch after starting the next row? 🙏 I’m learning a lot from making his hat thank you for the help ☺️
Once you’ve done the 9sc increase row you should have 66 stitches . For the start of your brim, work one round of sc into those 66 stitches but in the FRONT LOOP ONLY (this will give you a ridge to help start your brim) Next, continue with an increase row increase of 6 like you've been doing for the rest of the hat (72) The,n for the next round do 72 sc. Next, another increase row adding 6 more (78) . Then a final round of 78 sc . If you want to make the brim even bigger just do another inc row taking your 78 to 84 and add a sc row of 84 if you like. Totally up to you. You’re just doing what you’ve been doing the entire hat. The only difference Is working into the front loop only to start your brim. xx
I know this is a 2 year old video now, but I have one question. Other than trying the hat on from time to time. How do you measure or know the stitch count for a specific circumstance?
For me, I only made it for myself . If you’re wanting to make it for others sizes, I’d recommend you Google average head circumferences and then crochet until you reach that measurement using a tape measure. That’s how I would do it, anyway.

@@PlayHookywithMe so, it means increase in every 6 stitches? I am confused too. Thank you 🌷

Hello I'm stuck after doing front loop of sc 66 where do I go from here im confused do I do 9 sc , inc and keep doing that row until I get the desired fit
After 9sc, inc repeat (66) I assume you keep increasing until it's the right size, so the next step would be
10sc, inc repeat (72)
2 rounds of 72 sc
11sc, inc repeat (78)
2 rounds of 78 sc
12sc, inc repeat (84)
2 rounds of 84 sc
13sc, inc repeat (90)
2 rounds of 90 sc
Just stop at whatever size seems right for you, then add the brim.

One question, when doing the magic circle, I can't sinch it closed. The drawstring seems to be the one that I'm working with
Figured it out! I'll keep this comment here if anyone has the same issue, but I essentially started with the wrong end of the string with my magic circle. Start the cut off end facing down when you wrap the wool around your fingers to form a magic circle
👏🏻💕
Fun and easy to follow. Was wondering if there was any other wool I could use as I am in the 🇬🇧 and I can't fine the ones you used.
@@PlayHookywithMe thanks I will take a look and see what I find.
How would I make a split color hat?
You would just have to fasten off after each round and fasten back on with your new color. I would recommend watching videos where people teach how to change color when working in rounds like amigurumi .
How pretty!

I got a set of hooks just like the one you’re using at Hobby Lobby a month ago. the largest size is 6mm and the smallest is 2mm. unfortunately there’s no brand name on it, but it’s a cute little blue case that has all of the hooks plus clippers and a ruler. only $15 :)
Cool beans ! I’ll look next time I’m there, thanks!
How did you get your yard to constantly have 2 loops on it, are you using two things of yarn simultaneously, I can’t seem to get that effect
Yes, I used two strands. Check out “round one” of the video (there are time stamps in the description box below the video) and you will see how I was using two. If you use red heart super saver, their skeins are usually good for pulling from the center and outside strands. Hope that helps.
@@PlayHookywithMe thanks, this was super helpful!

So if you chain four to start with insteado of the "magic circle do you only do four stitches in the next round instead of six?
No , you continue on with the pattern as normal . 👍🏻 It’s just helping you make a ring big enough to fit the 6sc’s into .
You can see how it looks in this video plus other options you could use too , like chaining 2 and starting in the second chain .
th-cam.com/video/ICUqDZY1QH0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aCzVagHG2y-vhSDo
@PlayHookywithMe But there's only four stitches so do you have to do a stitch increase then?

Are 12 sc's in the round 3 the same as 6 inc in the context of how you are stitching it? 2 sc in each stitch of the 6 before?
No , there are rounds where you don’t want it to grow so you want to just put 1 sc instead of 2. ❤️
You continue increasing from where you left off 👍🏻💕
@@PlayHookywithMe thank you! I thought that was the case but figured better to ask than end up frogging or starting over lol!

I'm having 9 hells of a time trying to get the brim right. I think the yarn I'm using (which I believe is a slightly bulky Caron cake but came to me with no label) is too soft, so the brim just flops. I've got one more trick to try before I give up on this yarn and try a super saver. 😅
Maybe a stiffener would help. ❤️

@@PlayHookywithMe thanks for clarifying and for the adorable pattern :)
@@PlayHookywithMe Thank you so much. I'll give it another go with a larger ball of wool xx
Help! My brim curls up and it looks more like gnome hat than a witch. What did I do wrong?
Did you work in the back loop only to start your brim? That helps to bend the hat to start the brim . If your brim is curling I would suggest you get some stiffener spray or liquid starch . I have a link in the description box below the video. Stiffen Quick is a popular product.
Spray the brim only in the position you want. Use pins to help if necessary.
I would also suggest adding a couple more rows to your brim to make it wider. It will look less like a gnome hat if you do.
Hope that helps.
how do i measure it to fit on the back of my head?
I’m not quite sure what you mean when you say on the back. I would suggest just continuing to work in rounds until it fits. Measure the area you want it to fit and keep crocheting in the round until you reach that measurement.
Im so confused about the brim. Increase by six? How? Pleae help haha
Thank you! 🙏
You were right with the first scenario. . Keep increasing incrementally , 9,10 , 11 with the increases. 👍🏻💕
@@PlayHookywithMe Thanks so much! 😊 one more quick question, would I continue doing the two rounds of all sc in between the increase rounds as well?
@@SilentPluto You sure would , you've got it 👍🏻🙂
I'm having troubles with the increase .
My brim keeps rolling up no matter what I do any tips on the brim?
I would recommend a fabric stiffener . You can brush a little bit of liquid starch on there or use spray starch. Go slowly with the starches because they can add a little film to the yarn which shows up more on black.
You can also stiffen it with a diy mixture of equal parts water and glue and brush that onto the brim.
Place your hat onto a surface where you can sit it upright and pin the brim into the shape you want … then use one of these methods and set to dry for a few hours 👍🏻💕
Do you think you could use wool to crochet this and felt it smooth? New to crochet, but a long time knitter. Thank you!
That sounds like it’s worth a try - what a great idea . I’d make a mini one and try... I have a small witch hat pattern on my Halloween crow video ... maybe try before investing time and wool on a bigger one. Let me know if it works! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕
What is the actual finished size of this hat?
Mine was 12 Inches from tip to brim (laying it as if it looks like a cone) but this will vary depending on head circumference , yarn and hook sizes used.

If I don’t end on an increase does that mean I counted wrong on another round ?
Yes 💕
Can i use the smaller hook to make a big sized hat? I don't have a big hook :(
Yes , just make sure you’re using yarn that matches your hook size. It will take you more rounds to make the hat so just keep that in mind 🖤
For the start of your brim, work one round of sc into those 66 stitches but in the FRONT LOOP ONLY (this will give you a ridge to help start your brim)
Next, continue with an increase row increase of 6 like you've been doing for the rest of the hat (72)
The,n for the next round do 72 sc.
The only difference Is working into the front loop only to start your brim. xx
I dont understsnd where you get the number 6 from.
can you make a tutorial how to make horns 😊because i dont know how so maby you can help me 😊good tutorial 😊thanks
What kind of horns?
Do you have written patterns??
Sorry not yet. That’s my goal for 2022 💕
Do you have to double up the yarn ?
No , but it you don’t , I’d recommend you use a thicker yarn otherwise it’s going to work up smaller than the pattern tutorial.
@PlayHookywithMe thank you im in the middle of making one now and watching your video
Excuse me, how long is your hat? How many inches? Thank you 🌷
12 inches 🖤
I know this is a 2 year old video now, but I have one question. Other than trying the hat on from time to time. How do you measure or know the stitch count for a specific circumstance?
For me, I only made it for myself . If you’re wanting to make it for others sizes, I’d recommend you Google average head circumferences and then crochet until you reach that measurement using a tape measure. That’s how I would do it, anyway.
@@PlayHookywithMe ok good idea. Working on one now using a solid strand with an ombre strand. :)
