    I recommended an xps 9500 to my dad because of the good reviews and the amazing design. He had to get it replaced twice because of weird quirks, and of the 3 machines he had all of them had the trackpad issue. He had to get the palmrest assembly replaced on the 3rd unit to fix it because the replacement process was taking too long and he couldn't return it. So many reviewers brushed over the trackpad or didn't even mention it, and it turned out to be a major problem that year. If you get a defective product from dell, return it, dont replace it. When you replace it the 30 day return window is still based on that original machine so if you get lemon after lemon and eventually decide enough is enough, you're stuck with it. Returning it and buying it again ensures you have 30 days to find any quirks on each new replacement.

    Upgraded my old 2018 model XPS to the latest despite trackpad QC issues. Received my Dell XPS 15 9510 today and low and behold, I lost the QC lottery. Initially it was weirdly “sticking” below the click threshold causing missed clicks, then it just flat out stopped registering clicks altogether before I could even finish installing Windows. Honestly, really disappointing from such an expensive machine. One click with this trackpad would have immediately made it obvious that something was wrong, yet this one got the green light from Dell. Dell wants to send a technician to my house to replace the unit. In the long run it seems they’ll make it right, but it’s not the kind of experience you’d hope to have out of the box with a $2k+ laptop..

    • @Squidward1314
      @Squidward1314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Be careful! In most countries (AFAIK) you have a short (few weeks) free return period. I have read a lot of stories where the technicians were not able to repair the trackpad or even made it worse. Dont risk not being able to return the unit. You can always just return it and order a new one as long as you are still in the return period.
      It‘s beyond belief that Dell doesn‘t test this before shipping. 5 seconds would be enough to determine if the trackpad has the error. And for a company that wants the device to look an feel premium (and for this price) this is not acceptable.

As much as I love the laptop and for how good it was, I ended up going with something else as the trackpad left clicks never really seemed to register, and the palm rejection because of the wobble was terrible. Hey Dave! Just wanted to give you my two cents as I am a 9500 owner. I got my XPS 15 a little less than a year ago and initially ordered the white which has a solid trackpad and then switched it for the black which had a wobbly trackpad. I called them to have it replaced and long story short within my 30 day return, the laptop was replaced three whole times and all of them had wobbly track pads. After a nightmare with customer service spanning 3 weeks and an offer to either get $100 rebate or to, and I quote, deal with it or return it, the only thing close to any explanation I got was one of their customer service representatives told me that the track pads come from one of two different distributors and one of the distributors has the wobbly issue and they can’t pinpoint which one. Clearly this sounds ridiculous. But yeah, as LTT has demonstrated in the past as well, dell has a better chance at good customer service by not having any. I ended up having to file a case with the Better Business Bureau, not that amounted to anything. Maybe I’m over reacting, but it’s really the principle. You probably already know all of this, but I just wanted to share my experience. Anyway, absolutely love your work!

It runs at max clock speed of 4.2Ghz and after about 3-5 minutes, the clock speed drops to 1.5Ghz and again back to 4.2Ghz after some time . But the trackpad is absolute garbage. It’s such a shame because it’s something you use so much on a laptop that it really ruins the whole experience. I’ve tried doing the tape trick under the trackpad, and have even sent to Dell for a warranty service on it, and I got it back exactly the same. The wobbly trackpad is such a nuisance and really does stop this from being the top-tier machine it could be. @@WildfireX I see. I think Gaming Laptops' build quality in general have seen big improvements in the past 5 years or so. Even in 2015 when the first XPS "Infinity Bezel" redesign was introduced, gaming laptops mostly had bad build quality that were prone to cracking and internals breaking under heat over extended use.
      Today, a laptop like ASUS G15 (idk whether you have Strix G15, Zephyrus G15, or Strix G15 AE) is made with Anodized Magnesium Alloy and Carbon Reinforced Plastic materials, built to last and be durable.
      I think people tend to exaggerate Aluminum builds like XPS, Razer and Apple. For one thing, all 3 brands use differing quality of Aluminum that can't be compared directly to each other, or other materials like Plastic, Carbon, and Magnesium. For another? It is usually LESS durable than a well-reinforced plastic or magnesium builds. That's why Rugged and Semi-Rugged laptops (those laptops and tablets with handles) never use Aluminum.
      If the Dell XPS was made of 100% Carbon Fiber without the Aluminum then I would say its build quality IS durable and worth the premium price.

    Despite the fact Dell makes one of the best laptops feature wise, their quality through the years has been skyrocketing downwards and for the price they're charging, this is just shameful

      I've had my XPS since 2017 and I can say with confidence that I will never buy Dell again. I've had 3 new motherboards until they sent me a refurbished 2019 model which STILL has blue screen issues randomly and makes working on it terrible. And of course warenty is now gone

      That's never gonna happen. Dell premium line - XPS, Latitude, and Preicision series - are paid for by Intel to be Intel exclusive.
      If you want to see more AMD presence, show support by getting an all-AMD laptop like the Asus Advantage.

      @@mini9503 I understand. Dell needs to revisit the deals they've been making. With the kind of price XPS series is reaching to, it's hard to justify not going for Apple m1 macbook air even for a person like me who was never an apple fan and was never into that ecosystem whatsoever

    Everyone says thunderbolt isn't an issue regarding AMD, yet there are what, zero AMD laptops with thunderbolt support? I will never buy a laptop without TB3 or better.

    • @patrickpopp9197
      @patrickpopp9197 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In therory it istn´t because intel opened up the technologie and apple showed it can be done without an intel chip with the m1 macs but somehow no laptop manufacturer has implementet it yet.

    • @patrickpopp9197
      @patrickpopp9197 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And why exactly do you need thunderbolt? I can only really see a benefit over usb type c 3.2 gen2 if your using an external gpu

    • @mini9503
      @mini9503 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because Intel still holds the technology. Just because the Thunderbolt patent is royalty free, doesn't mean other OEMs can do whatever they want with it. They need to pay Intel AND need their permission to use it. We won't see Thunderbolt on AMD for many years.

    I owned a 9700, maxed out 10885h, 4K, 2060, etc.. and it was an AWESOME computer! Some trackpad issues like it was said, 100+fps on 1080p Warzone, but it will lose battery as you play because the charger does not provide enough power to keep it topped off.. I ran my 9700 connected to a Alienware 240hz via DisplayPort through a Thunderbolt 3 dongle and G-Sync was awesome!.
    Great buy, if you can leave with some of its downsides.

    Dave, I need to know, what refresh rate does it support for external monitors? My 9700 supports 144hz but the 9710 with the 3060 should support 240hz right? Can't seem to find a 100% confirmation of this one way or the other
