    There is absolutely nothing like fasting energy. Mental clarity, in a great mood, I feel ready to tackle anything. I never felt anything similar before I started fasting.

      You actually in a great mood or is it just you perceiving that? Like do people enjoy you more when you fasting and say you LESS cranky when fasting? Cuz I bitchy and nitpicky when I fast.

      @@morsumbra9692 Oh, yeah. It is very different. I'm more likely to great people, to help someone else when I don't need to. I literally have a spring in my step. To make clear, it is not a switch that I'm like this while fasting and then when I eat I go back to normal. I'm talking about being in a state where I've been consistently doing anywhere from 16:8 to 23:1 for a long while. DO you take salt when you fast? If I don't take plenty of salt and water when fasting it doesn't work.

      @@andrewolivetreemixing Salt keeps me from feeling hungry. When fasting the body tends to flush water so it also flushes electrolytes. What often felt like hunger was actually low electrolytes. Take some salt and I'm comfortable again. I take less salt now that I did at first(three years ago). I'm assuming the body adapts to fasting and holds on to more sodium.

    I can’t eat breakfast or lunch when I’m working I get wayyyy to tired and unfocused I’ve been doing Omad fasts for years except the weekends and it really helps maintain/ lose weight without much effort

      Yeah I find it very difficult to eat during the day while I'm working. I have no energy. If it's just meat or something I'm relatively okay but if I have a sandwich or something I'm "toast".

    When i was fasting at the first quarantine of 2020, i was generally calm, even though i have anxiety and deptession, i exercised 1 hour with bike and another half hour with weights, i studied hours for my classes and was drawing almost every day. My skin had 0 pimples, even though i have acne ( not sever) and i also lost 5 kilos

    I've been doing 10-11 hours fasting during the week while I'm at work and it's helped me a lot. It's reduced my bloating, mid day energy crash, and I feel sharp while I'm at work

    Yep, I do not eat before 2 PM, I work (mostly physical work) whole morning and feel great, lively, focused.

    I did the 4x4x48 challenge last year and the last two or three cycles were difficult because I also had been fasting for 24 hours before I even started. So I was close to the 72-hour towards the end of the challenge and I bunked. I think that if I would have been fully ketone adapted I would not have had such a drop in performance, I did wind up eating a high carbohydrate meal and was able to finish. I feel like it was just a depletion of muscle glycogen primarily. When I do it again, im going to replete with na/k, glucose prior to 4h intervals.

    As a follow-up to Dr. Huberman's point about how time-restricted feeding impacts weight loss, Dr. Liu, Deying, et al. recently (April 2022) published “Calorie Restriction with or without Time-Restricted Eating in Weight Loss” in the New England journal of medicine. They showed that among obese patients, calorie restriction & 8 hr time restriction eating regiment did not yield additional weight loss as compared with identical daily calorie restriction alone.       Fasting is not only about losing weight, but also about body recomposition. It means that fasting takes more from fat storage than from body proteins, keeping lean mass intact and thus recomposing the body (less fat, more muscles). Add some exercise to it - and the results are very encouraging.
      Other studies (that can be found in PubMed database) also showed that fasting is not more effective than calorie restriction, but only in the sense of weight losing.

    Fasting has many dietary and cognitive benefits we dont completely understand yet. Its something that I inadvertently adopted when I was a dog runner in NYC out of necessity. I literally could not afford to eat 3 meals a day. But I discovered when I was eating once a day my productivity went through the roof. My physical prowess and my focus and concentration was better than at any other point in my life. (I wrote the manuscript for two books during this time) Keep in mind this was in conjunctuon with a moderate amount of exercise (running at least 5 miles/day). It is a practice in will power/discipline, instincual hardwiring rewiring, and dietary/physiological metamorphosis. He is dead on. It varies from person to person. I still practice it. I can not eat 3 meals a day. That is way excessive for me. The ketone diet my friend is remarkable.

      My theory is that is not just about the changes in your body, it's the changes in your mind. Modern food is a satiating drug. It satisfies you and boosts certain neurochemicals so that you feel like you've achieved/accomplished something good. But you haven't. You've just gone to McDonald's and ordered a big Mac. Food is used as a coping mechanism today and keeps our mental state in a cycle of eating, wanting more food, and eating more. We've been trained like dogs with treats. When I cut out junk food, sugary food, and snacking, I notice that my brain returns to the dull thud of reality. It's as if I'm waking up from a light nap. I become more likely to get up and do things. I become more aware. My theory is this. Junk food boosts dopamine. Extreme levels of dopamine desensitizes us from dopamine. Since dopamine is what actually drives us to perform tasks and search out rewards, we start to have no drive to do anything in life because of our dopamine insensitivity. We just can't use the dopamine we already have. After years of having your brain trained to exist like this, your brain will have physically changed and it will be exceedingly difficult to change yourself.

      Actually the functions of fasting have been figured out by Arnold Ehret & then book/system he created called "The Mucusless Diet Healing System" & the book "Rational Fasting."

    I eat once a day usually and it tends to work best for me . I can literally eat whatever I’m craving that day, as much as I want, and then when I’m feelin full I let my body process that for a day :)

    It's not a problem if that one meal is in the evening when you want to become tired. I did one meal per 24 hour window for ages and well before it was a 'thing'. Let me tell you. It's a great option and it's sustainable.

    I fasted for 7 days (only drank water, had non-sweetened green tea once) and had some mental clarity but ultimately around day 6-7 I was just extremely lethargic. Every movement felt like it took a great deal of effort and energy, so I’m really interested in that Navy SEAL’s experience. Perhaps it was the soup he had, or perhaps it was how he chose to expend his energy during that time and how his body learned to compensate.

    I’m 33 now even as a teenager I’ve always felt better performance wise limiting my foot intake such as fasting. Boxing and wrestling and currently training jits. I live by this!

    I eat low carbs 6 days a week and one day high carb. I smash the weights in the gym and feel amazing . We are adapted to burn fat or sugar for fuel . It's just a matter of getting your body adjusted to fat burning. Once you get into it you won't want to go back.

    I’m doing my second 36 hour fast my previous was my first and I was in a bad mood after I didn’t eat breakfast until around 8pm I felt so focused I can’t explain it it’s the best I’ve felt ever I felt like I could run for ever definitely recommend fasting

    I have done a 93 and 114 hour fast and I have to say that once you have reached the 72 hours you feel like Superman at that point. I’m also taking in water and minerals during these longer fasts.

      I use Dr.ken Berry’s Keto Chow. One tablespoon in my water. The stuff is really salty and does not taste good but it gets the job done. Great job on doing a 10 day fast. Maybe one day I will get to that point.

      @@am3818 I'm flirting with the idea of doing another 10 day with very light exercising like walking a mile or so, a few push ups and air squats (low counts, just enough to stimulate the body.) But with a 48 hour fast I wouldn't be too worried unless you are planning some kind of *very* strenuous activity.

    I have a sleep disorder so sometimes after lunch I would fall asleep at work, I’m now doing OMAD and this has stopped even with a big lunch.

    There's one thing I worry about fasting is that Valter Longo mentioned a study that found over 12 hours of not eating, the chance of getting gallstone increased.
    I searched on TH-cam and google, there's only few people talk about it and non of them debunk it.

      Fasting creates a natural state of detoxification in which the body uses the energy gained from not digesting food to get rid of the toxins, damaged cellular materials & waste products stored in the body.
      Gallstones are made up of bile acids. You can help prevent them by occasionally ingesting fresh squeezed lemon juice & olive oil & lots of water
      It will minimally affect your fasting but powerfully aid in cleansing, detoxing & preventing systemic inflammation, as well as preventing the gallstones & kidney stones that can be an issue for some when fasting. Lemon is a very powerful healing food.

    Alertness certainly goes up. I have never felt as alert and focused as I did on omad. Unfortunately, it is a rather impractical eating habit since it tends to interfer with a normal social life. 16:8 is more practical but does not give the same alertness.

    Putting a bit of Himalayan pink salt in your water during a fast helps the body to retain electrolyte balance & hydration without breaking the fast. It also supplies a lot of very beneficial trace minerals.

    I’ve lost a lot of weight eating OMAD just protein. I feel great. The only thing is, I don’t hardly sleep anymore. I wake up after 5 or 6 hours of sleep every morning. Sometimes ( not often) I only sleep 4 hours.

    3:49 - increasing alertness; less carbs or fasting
    3:58 - foods that makes your sleepy
    4:15 - if you have a lot of food in the gut, you're increasing sleepiness

    Fasting is just as much spiritual as is it a balance of knowledge and science. Especially for longevity, you never know when your ups and downs hit you in life. To be prepared for adversity, is to have that connection with God.

    I'm fairly new to nutrition and taking care of myself in a serious manner in terms of being mindful when it comes to diet. I have a crazy metabolism so gaining/keeping healthy weight is kind of hard. Plus I am now a regular at the gym because I want to get in better shape and add muscle. Is fasting something I should consider? I don't naturally have a lot of body fat, and I want to make sure I am getting enough calories to help with muscle gain. Am I just eating a shit ton during that eat period? (Disclaimer: my diet is NOT IMMACULATE but its respectable. Little to no processed food. Good variation of fats, carbs, protein, etc.)

      Track your calories. Get enough protein. Fasting can help in as far as it limits the time you have to eat aka get calories in. Fat loss is calories in calories out at the end of the day. Godspeed

    I love how credit for fasting is given to two or three contemporary scientists, when our ancestors world-wide have left clear instructions to fast, embedded in religious protocols and meditative practices- The benefits of fasting have been recognized and revered for millennia. Would it not have been worth mentioning that from a cultural interest standpoint?

    I’ve done intermittent 12, 16 as well as 24, 48h fasts. I get zero of the benefits mentioned. Its like any other day i just go through a few periods of extreme hunger. Never experienced this amazing ‘clarity’ people talk about

      Try 30 minutes of parasympathetic breathing patterns a day for a week then begin your fast and continue your breathing practice. Also movement and outside air + light will amplify your fast and injoyment. Sincerely give it a try.

    I have went 10 days before. The Master Cleanse. Amazing to see what comes out of your body each day. I felt reset and my energy levels were amazing. i recommend any sort of fasting to anybody.

      @@ethereal369Hi, unfortunately familiar insult is not a high-quality salt. There are a lot of chemicals that are used when during the production. I recommend Real Salt brand or Celtic sea salt.

      Add sodium to your water 💦 and get lo salt it's potassium chloride. You need electrolytes to do prolonged fasts

    I do coconut water during my every six months 7 day fasting. I try for 3 days just water and much rest in a hammock looking at nature. then the remaining 4 days of the 7 day fast, I sip on coconut water through the day, ample water, and half water mixed with half of carrot juice and/or jicama juice sipped through the day. I greatly improved my eyesight this way. And it was not and is not an easy path, but oh so worth it. I was in a constant up and down mood/energy level. I rested in my hammock outside looking at birds, butterflies, dragonflies, clouds, tree branches, leaves, etc. in nature. I feel the important thing is to totally relax and don't work or very, very little work on my computer and be outside on "nature's operating table" (and no I don't take salt. we get too much salt as it is. (but maybe it's not a bad idea to get the electrolytes, but I'd much rather do "Trace Minerals" that has the salt removed. but since I live in the Philippines for many years, the coconut juice provides the electrolytes and some energy but still allows the cleansing I'm seeking like removing "gunk" off my eyes.)

    I thought this was more of a trendy thing until I tried it. I've lost 10+ pounds eating mostly fatty rich foods and no carbs. I'm only hungry at dinner time and I have way more energy. If I cheat though, I start to get snacky, bloated and tired all the time.

    OMAD is amazing and gives more benefits than shorter fasts. You might feel a bit groggy but not for long. No different to when you eat too much when not fasting. And you feel on top of the world again very quickly.

    No need to take this to extremes, as you get all the benefits and none of the downsides when you do sensible intermittent fasting. 16/8 18/6 or 20/4, depending on individual parameters. Need to lose bodyfat, make the window a little smaller. Otherwise stick to something that keeps your weight stable and also gives your body the regenerative effects of not having to process food all the time. I'm pretty sure this is how nature intends for us to eat. It's simple, it's healthy and (after a few days of mental adjustment) it's not hard to do. Because when the window is closed it's closed and there's no point thinking about it. And when it's open you can eat normal varied food that tastes better too. Indulge every now and then if you get sick of it without feeling like you've failed, and unlike when you stuff your face all the time, even a small snack will feel like an amazing treat that can last you a week or even two. Just reel in the slack the next day and keep trucking for the long haul and you're golden.

      As far as know, autophagy doesn't happen on intermitent fasting, only larger periods of fasting. So I think you should not use "alm the benefits" so lightly.

I wish my body treated my extra body fat as a straight up replacement for nutrition, but I think it's a little more complicated than that unfortunately.       Neither 16/8 nor 18/6 can or should be called fasts. 20/4 is getting into the territory, but OMAD is the true litmus test for a genuine fast.

    I agree with some of this. I’ve done a fair amount of fasting both intermittent and longer. Focus and energy do go up. However I disagree that eating complex carbs makes you hazy or unfocused. Try going plant based. Energy and focus are similar or better than fasting basically all the time. And sleep is better. At least for me, meat and dairy are what makes me tired and mentally foggy. But I still eat meat and dairy occasionally because it’s tasty 😀

    Fasting has been there for centuries, if not more. Most ancient would be mentions in Vedic scriptures (Hinduism).
    About Lex: Full ketosis though doesn`t occur in just 20 hr`s of fasting. Full ketosis goes from like 48-72 hr`s, that could be only partial.

      Drink water, take fiber and vitamins. It takes a week or so for it to feel normal, you will begin regaining energy and less hungry each day your body gets used to it.

    I did a 28 day fast and it was phenomenal. I wish that I gave myself a task to complete during that month. I’ve done 7 and 14 day as well. Honestly if you’re doing 72 you may as well do 5-7 days since hunger drops off after day 3 or so.
    I’m planning on doing weeklong fasts at least quarterly, IF daily, and at least a 10-20 day fast once annually.

      I used to do long multiday fasts and piano playing went way up. I was in an otherwise low dopamine state with slow fingers but the fast freed them up and allowed me to execute the music I already knew. Surpised how it all came back to me during the fast!

      To me having the same issue was due to coffeine dependency. When I drink coffee at work every day and add a 24 water fast on the weekend, I tend to get the headaches. If I drink coffee during the fast, I don't. If I eat regularly for a day without coffee before the fast, I also don't get the headaches. Might be different from you though.

    I never had these benefits from a low carb high animal product diet. That diet makes me wanna sleep bug time. I did a whole food plant based diet and my energy was the best ever. I started running. I snored slightly it went away it was like inflammation went down in my body in general. Aside from the energy I felt the best mental acuity of my life so I can't concurr with the claims made here from my experience

    Long fasts are wonderful. Days 1-2 you feel like you could eat a small cow. Days 3 you feel like you got hit by a truck. Days 4-5…you feel like you can fly!
