If one buys quality, classic clothing items they never go out of style. A button down white shirt, a black turtleneck, a wool blazer Levi’s, Converse, Van’s etc are staples for me and I’m 64!
You're so right on Emily. I've noticed you get a lot of comments from women in my age group (60+), and I've been wondering why that might be . . . beyond your great authentic, personal style. I think it boils down to this; wisdom recognizes wisdom. You have a " wise, old soul" wealth of knowledge/truths when it comes to personal style. This particular video is a perfect example of that great quality about you. You are so in your lane! Keep it up, and thank you!
Totally agree! As a 52 yo, I want some edge to my existing classic/preppy style and I appreciate Emily's approach. Now, to accept my body as is, fight the frump, and try and push my own boundaries and figure out what clothes need to go and what should come in. One question for Emily...I feel that I need to cover up upper arms and I have my share or preppy 3/4 length sleeve sweater. I need structured clothing. What is an edgy layer instead of these preppy sweaters beyond my denim jacket? Thanks so much!
As a 65 year old, I agree!!! My real age (you know, the one inside my head) is clearly somewhere between 35 and 40. I am an artist and have always dressed creatively. I am now at my most zen like, care less about what others think, and know exactly what I like and don’t like. I am at my most confident, I am still “young.” My partner (of 32 years) I actually have a local/online radio station that plays current hits! We throw in a few classics, but we Have to be current. I believe that women are aging very differently than ever before. I think that’s why Emily’s style and attitudes resonates with us. Keep rocking’ it Emily!
Ugh why are you so freaking fabulous? I love it! I hate when influencers are like "don't wear these perfectly good clothing items you already own, they are out of style. Wear these instead so you can feel like a worthy human being. and use my link below so I can make money off of you!"
This is everything. Thank you! I regret parting with so many quality pieces because they weren’t “on trend” only to discover they came back around and they are actually who I am. I’m 52, my body is changing but my sense of style and confidence is more solid than ever. Something happens in menopause - I’m just all out of f**** to give. Lol I’m going to wear what makes me happy. Last week, because I felt myself falling down the rabbit hole of You Tube stylists and hauls, I made a list of all of the items I’ve owned/loved before You Tube even existed. It was so clarifying to see it on paper and realize the core things I love are indeed who I am and now I’m free to “sprinkle” (love that word of yours) in and freshen up a look or walk away from it and know it’s not worth it, for me. Thank you for all of the time and energy you put into your videos. So appreciated! 🙏🏼❤
Thank you for your wise and practical ways! I am 71, am 4'9", and have scoliosis. I adopted black as my favorite "color" many years ago because it makes my life easier, can be casual or dress up, and doesn't scream look at me. It works for me so I am sticking with it. Love your happy vids and Happy Mother's Day!
Same age, same attitude. I go for the black slacks way of dressing -- a few pairs of versatile, well-fitted black slacks can be very subdued or very forward, depending on tops/jackets/shoes etc.
I mix and match my clothes, and I do my best to be aware of trends, but not necessarily chase them. I joke around different trends and think “I’m going to be “in style” for a few months” because trends change so quickly. I’m 51, and trend chasing is not my bag anymore.
My mother had a beautiful kilt her tailor mother made for her with yards and yards of Scottish tartan. In the sixties my mother shortened the kilt…not micro mini but short. When longer skirts came back in style, she ripped apart each stitched down pleat, steamed the fabric and remade the skirt using the fabric in a different direction. She loved that fabric. It served her well for over fifty years.
"You determine your style." Yes. Thank you, sometimes we all need to hear this! I have a silly, irrational fear of looking dated or like I've let myself go and haven't shopped for clothing in 15 years. But honestly, if what I'm wearing is authentic to me, makes me feel good, is still in good conditon, I take the time to style it well, and declutter items that no longer serve me, I'm probably never going to look dated 😂 It's also worth remembering that trends cycle back around, plus trendy items are often very similar to "out of style" items with slight tweaks. For instance, there's little difference in silhouette between skinny jeans and leggings.
I think once you see the fashion come around to the stuff you liked as an adolescent, you realize it's always just recycling and repeating the same stuff every few decades
This video was very helpful. I have a problem of deciding in shops what to buy and often buy the wrong clothes because the sales lady is encouraging me. I get confused. Your video of buying and wearing of what you love even if it isn’t the latest fashion has been a big help to me. Thank you for your videos.
Perfect example: camo. I've been wearing camo for years. Before it became trendy I would buy my pieces at the army/navy surplus store. Once it became trendy I stopped wearing it. Then I thought, why should I stop wearing something I love.
I enjoy people-watching and fashion-watching on my commutes around the city. Even with the freshest trend, there's a difference between people who bought the trend and people wearing fashion, wearing their style, a trend added and styled into a Look with care and confidence. Same care and confidence that keeps non-trends looking fresh and interesting!
Yes exactly!! And I agree, I love people watching as well. So fun to see the different perspectives on similar pieces. The same shirt can look totally different on one person to the next.
Brands and taste makers are trying to sell more product. I don't shop just to shop. It's nice to see what's trending and see how I can make my classic, occasionally boho look fit with what's trendy. I encourage people to wear what they feel fabulous in.
When maxi dresses were trending and I found a few I loved in one shop, I bought all three (and two more elsewhere). Not because they were on trend but because I have always loved them and they were unavailable till the trend came in. They have now been worn several seasons and I’m looking forward to weather that is warm enough here to bring them out.
i don't follow trends but they are good for inspiration. i love your points about there isn't an "out of style". however, there is something to be said for being head-to-toe out of date. picture this: black/white/pink Etnies skater shoes, light wash, low-rise flare jeans, layered camisole under a Pacsun cap-sleeve T-shirt... that's a walking time-capsule from 2007. If someone is wearing an outfit like that today, it looks like that person was in prison for the last 15yrs. but most of us aren't doing that ;)
Thank you so much for including my question in your video! ❤ I was able to take away a lot from this! I don't think anyone who loves fashion can absolve themselves from paying attention to trends. In my case, I often don't even really like them at first. Probably because they seem a little strange at first. But the more you see them, the more you get used to them and the more old-fashioned earlier trends seem. The skinny jeans are a very good example. It's probably really a question of skillful combination, whether it still fits into the here and now or whether one has the impression that it seems outdated. In the past, people wore very tight tops with bell-bottoms, then they wore them with skinny pants, after that the rule of thumb applied: if tight at the bottom, then wide at the top and vice versa, today both are mostly wide. Therefore, trying on a tight shirt currently seems strange to me. It gets really bad when I trying on a tight shirt while wearing skinny jeans. But your tips on how not to give up older clothes by pick up them with newer influences really helped me perceive that. As long as the older pieces don't predominate in the outfit, they can still be integrated without problems. And in addition to tops and pants, there are also shoes, jackets, accessories... Many, many thanks and greetings from Germany! ❤
I'm 73 and ignore trends completely. I have a very wonderful thrift shop adjacent a community of millionaires, and I always know when something has gone "off trend" because it suddenly shows up there, in abundance! For me it's new, skinny jeans being one example. Hmmm... Could "off-trend" become a style trend?
I think you may be on to something there. You think about the Hipster trend, that was sort of that. Wearing pieces ironically was where it started. Then it became cool and the word Hipster transformed.
I refuse to give up my skinny jeans. One of the great things about being 50+ is that I no longer feel like I need to impress anyone with my on trend wardrobe. 😊
Hi Emily, thank you for your video. Love your black shirt. I find it really hard to find shirts with a crisp stand up collar. Most of the shirt collars are short at the back and floppy. I'm always on the lookout for a good collar. Gale x
Emily, do you ever starch your collars, or do they stand up because of their fabric? Some of my collars won't stay up, or they flop when I'm not looking and I don't realize I've been walkin' around with only half my collar popped....
The skinny Jean is a weird one, I’ve not heard one person say they are ready or want to give up the skinny, it feels like we’re all being dictated to and railroaded, which make me want to rebel and continue wearing my beloved skinny’s!
Thank you for this video. Over the years I have changed the way I shop for clothing. It has to fit and flatter my petite sze. My clothes may not be the latest trend but I am comfortable and happy. I like my style.
Thank you for your content. Again, I like your fresh approach and your way to explain and rethink concepts. This kind of video makes me clearly feel the absurdity of the fashion sphere. Do you have these moments where you think "why am i doing all this ?" And would you like to make a video about what's motivate you / what excite you the most about creating outfits and playing with fashion?
Yea I definitely question this category a lot. But I looooove talking about it and helping myself and others grow in confidence for embracing our style. And I'd definitely be open to those video ideas. I have so many videos I want to make it's hard to narrow it all down.
Do clothes actually go out of style? I find fashion is cyclical & what's out will be in again, sometime. The only real thing that I've noticed I don't see anymore are the house dresses & those super thick, wrinkly, "nude" tights that my great grandma used to wear. 😉
I like infinity scarves also, or any kind of scarf. I saw an article a couple of years ago saying that infinity scarfs make you appear heavier. I totally disagree. A nice bright scarf brings the attention to the face and upper body, not the belly and hips.
Totally agree though with choosing quality basics and using those forever till they literally disintegrate. I’ve been round the block a few times and some of my pieces have definitely been in and out. Some I did get rid of and came to regret it, so now I’ve replaced them and intend to keep them. Love your idea of wearing a ‘not quite on trend’ piece with more current pieces I definitely love my skinny jeans for cycling and they fit easily into tall boots
I really don’t follow influencers who are all about the trends, tell me I’m not suppose to wear an item, and especially the ones that tell me the do’s and don’ts of fashion. I was very dissatisfied for a very long time. Since unsubscribing to them I am way more content with my clothes.
Yep. The worst ones are the ones who continually serve as infomercials (high on the commercial content), just flogging some brand in each video, urging us to buy buy BUY! That's not about style, that's about sales and income for them. Their right to do so, but my right to opt out.
I don’t even think the taste makers are up high, the taste makers are on the street, they are in different cultures and the high end “taste makers” borrow or steal from the those cultures and because they have the resources are able to make it global. I love the knee boot idea, i have some skinny jeans I was gonna take to goodwill but I can give the knee high boot looks a chance in the fall. 👍🏾 Also, ultimately, yes, wear what you want. But if you are into looking stylish, and an extension of your personality is your clothes, there’s definitely an art to it.
I’m a deep believer in buying, caring for, and wearing with confidence items that you love regardless of trends. If you picked it because it’s quality and it suits you well and you really enjoy wearing it, then it can go out of style and you can keep on wearing it happily. Keep that closet populated with well made items that you love to wear.😊 Jen
All this time later and people are still saying celebrities are style setters. Why not give credit or credit is due - celebrities aren’t dressing themselves stylists are. Ok maybe not all the time, but I’d wager 8/10. Meanwhile, on the topic of your actual video, I think the thing that keeps in style is high-quality make it doesn’t have to be expensive but when the cut is right or the fabric is good or the materials used are in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing that’s where you have style. Hello Iris apple for instance she’s had the same style forever. It doesn’t matter what it is. She’s clean it. She owns it and that’s who she is. I think we’re things fall down into the out of style rut is the fast fashion. Because this is where the cuts are made for the common denominator - nobody fits these clothes. The fabric is bad. The construction is bad and ultimately the style is bad because it’s not designed for longevity. I love what you do which is taking very well-made classics and then adding your own picture of flavour to it. I think that is where the true style is. I’m still trying to make that work for myself but it’s lots of fun and that’s why I love these kinds of videos. Thanks for doing this. Appreciate your POV.
Sorry Emily, I would agree taking wide leg jeans to a tailor to have them made narrower but skinny jeans have been cut that way and there just isn’t the fabric available to reconfigure them to a wider, more relaxed fit.
I remember seeing a photo of Kate Moss years ago on the street wearing a pair of blue Sass & Bide skinnies before anyone else was wearing them, and even though I love her, I laughed out loud as they hadn’t been popular (at least in a way that looked cool) probably since the 60s and I said, well that’s one look that no one else will try and copy…ha! 15 or 20 years later we’re still debating if they’re in or out…
I’m too fat for trends. Trendy clothes on skinny people with a strong shoulder line look intentional, I just look like an unmade bed. So, my go to is a neutral column with an interesting statement jacket over.
Where I live its in style to wear your pajama bottoms, your way too small leggings, sloppy t-shirts and slippers to the grocery store. I am proud to say I am out of style and actually put on pants and shoes.
We totally need folks like you who see past the money making hype. Fee people really enjoy wearing fast fashion all that much. Who enjoys wearing ill fitting clothes that feel horrible next to the skin and have threads hanging everywhere?
Fashion was declared dead in the 1990s, and what are trends if fashion magazines stay monthly, but fast fashion has a new collection in their shops every week? Mere suggestions. Colour seems to last a little longer. And the majority of people I see in my day to day are either in jeans and t-shirt variations, because it is a simple uniform or they have found their style and wear it and they have found the colours and shapes that flatter them and they will attempt to wear those regardless of what is in the shops. Inspite of my quite advanced age find myself following maximalist socialmedia influencers who experiment with colours and shapes with reckless abandon and a complete disregard any trend dictate in mostly thrifted clothes. If they feel like a bootcut jeans they will incorporate it even if bootcut is not scheduled to return for another 20 years.
If one buys quality, classic clothing items they never go out of style. A button down white shirt, a black turtleneck, a wool blazer Levi’s, Converse, Van’s etc are staples for me and I’m 64!

I often deliberately ignore the so called taste makers. They are in it for money. Dress as you please in clothes that make you feel good.

I've got pants I purchased in 1991 that are now "trendy" again. I've never stopped wearing them and I always hear "ohhh where did you get those?"

I love your style. It's kind like mine.
Cuffing seems to help skinny jeans too
Hello
💜
😊
