    As a teenager I worked in a high end fashion store on the Prom in Cheltenham. I used to walk past Cavendish House every day. I had a fabulous houndstooth check pencil skirt that I loved and wore often. I found out later that the window dressers/display artists, as they were called then, dubbed me “the pencil girl”, because they liked what I wore. So you never know who’s watching.🤣

    Wonderful video Emily! I've personally discovered (in my 80's) that I can be as edgy and far out in my personal style as what feels really good to me....and that is truly all that matters. This happened to me when I turned 80! It was like, who cares...I just want to be me. Sooo freeing! Your videos have helped cement that attitude in my style!

    This was so good, especially point #1 - nobody cares. I learned that the hard way, after so many years of trying to look acceptable, appropriate, businesslike, etc. But just wait until you are older and considered irrelevant that’s when it really hits you that nobody cares how great your outfit, makeup, hair, or thoughts are. So just be you and do you always.

    I think that ripple effect happens not only in your life, but in your environment as well. I have noticed that since I started consciously developing my style, the women around me start upping their game as well. I see it at church and in the workplace, and with friendships. I love that dressing as your best self inspires other women to do the same.

  • @JJJettplane
    @JJJettplane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I'll admit, I think about what other's will think way to much when I'm getting dressed and will tone things down if I feel I'll be noticed too much. Most of the people around me don't care or have personal style to speak of and I guess I don't want to look like I care too much about appearance. In reality, I wish I had more friends who loved style, and we supported that in each other.

    • @EmilyWheatley
      @EmilyWheatley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have so been there. And it is hard sometimes because we don't always want to be the center of attention. The good thing is that the more you do you the more people will come to expect it. And maybe with that you'll inspire some to up their style more as well.

    Oh, wow! Spot on! These points were brought home to me as I prepared a capsule Red/Blk/White (school colors) capsule wardrobe for our 50th high school class reunion, last weekend. With closet, purchased, borrowed, thrifted clothing items, I threw it altogether (tough, because of changing season of hot one day and cool the next). Then, at the last moment a friend said, "Oh, I've got the perfect jumpsuit for you!" Well, I brought it home thinking, "Yeah, right..." but my youngest saw it and said, "Hey, that's cute. Sure you can pull it off". Out of my comfort zone, I went with it, decided to shine it on, and surprised myself that "ripping that bandaid off" was quick, painless, and then, EXCITING. No body cared, most loved it, and the fun times rolled all evening. Funny thing is...I HATED HIGH SCHOOL...but, after 50 years we are all over ourselves and know it is the friendships that last and have real meaning.

    If someone does not like my outfit, my first thought is usually "you have no taste!" :D Jokes aside, I do take 'outfit rejection' a little personally. I I try to remember that the most important thing is to dress for yourself, so you can feel comfortable and be yourself, and thereby attract the people that matter to you. Thanks for these helpful confidence boosters!

    I have only found your videos in the last few days. I really love this one today. Thank you for reminding me that it's not that important what I wear in the greater scheme of things. In the last year I have moved somewhere that women/people don't seem to wear the kind of things we wore where I come from. (the UK). I am quite often the only women with make up on, or wearing a brighter colour- and they aint that bright ! I am now starting , after a year of settling in, to reconsider what is my 'look' now? After a few years of things being different (for everybody), I can now watch videos like yours, to help me find what fits for me now. It's all very exciting really, and ...after all, it's just an outfit. So thanks for reminding me of that. 🏵🌺🌻

    Yes Emily. Totally agree with everything you said except what you said about losing yourself when your had your son. You didn’t lose yourself, you just explored another facet of your being. You had the ability to bring life into the world and you did. You were always who you are just a new and different option. Now that you’ve been a mom for a couple of years, you have the opportunity to shoe him how fierce his mama is ( and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.) Be the beautiful best you can be. Thanks again for your fashion wisdom. 🙏🏻💜

    Yes also lost my creative style sense of self when I became a mom. Taller version of your frame in my 60’s I’m finding it again with an older body and a lot of mistakes along the way related to new shape. My daughters have kept their style as moms cheered on by me. Thank you! I just cut off my very lovely bob because it’s not me right now loving shorter edgier hair. I think the compliments I get are more that I’m dressing as myself and that comfort is what they see.

    I learned lots of these way back in high school a hundred years ago. When I thought I wanted to be a teacher and my ‘best’ friend told me they wouldn’t let teachers wear gaucho pants, which I wore all the time, and when I’ve continued to wear clogs when they just come in and out of fashion, when my mom compliments anything I wear that she would wear, but nothing I wear that she wouldn’t. You just have to dress for yourself and own it. Great video.

    Spot on! As a woman in my mid-50's, if I could say anything to girls and women younger than me, it would be these points. We need not absorb other people's insecurities and express them in how we dress; we are not other people's opinions of us. Everyone has a sphere of influence. Thank you for using yours wisely and well, and with such grace and humility!

    Emily I am so happy to hear that there is another person on earth thinks that she lost her self a bit after having a child. After having my son who ever I met they were telling me how blessing it was, they all looked so normal, already returned back their normal size; babies were sleeping through the night. I felt more isolated. 170 cm size 36 girl became chubby mom. I hated myself. I am still struggling with my weight after 8 years. I have always 10 pounds to loose. My son is the most precious human being on earth for me but I feel more like me when I am not with him; and definitely more like a mother with him.

    Thanks for opening up about "losing your style" when you had your son. I felt the same way after I had my first son! When I emerged from my postpartum haze, I dumped so much money into rediscovering my personal style, and felt like I was getting nowhere. It wasn't until I had my second son right before the pandemic, and the pandemic itself, that I discovered all that money I wasted buying things that weren't me came from a place of insecurity. Love your channel and your advice... it's definitely helped tremendously being confident with my own style, and truly loving my (now much smaller but well curated) wardrobe.

    A few years ago I was in a vintage shop and fell in love with a hat. Although I don’t wear a lot of hats OR a lot of vintage I felt amazing in it, so I bought it. I’m going to an outdoor wedding at a vineyard this weekend and I thought - if I don’t have the nerve to wear it now, then when will I ever wear it? My not-so-confident self says I can always leave out the hat at the last minute! That would leave my outfit looking very unremarkable.Thank you for the timely video.

    Over the last two years I realized, that my wardrobe is kind of a dream wardrobe, but in a way for me as a person in my dreams. The cool, chic, traveling, business edgy girl. Yes, all of that very rare! Most of my time I am the always on my bike or feet, between family and office girl. So I changed what's in my wardrobe step by step: more sporty/chic garments, outwear and shoes, less wide leg pants, leather, long skirts, thin and delicate tops... I still have some delicate, cool or dramatic items, but just a few for special occasions... Now my wardrobe fits my lifestyle. 💕🤗

    Ive just remembered a painful experience .A family wedding and I after trying on many ideas ,I chose a jewel coloured floral blouse ,a pale grey skirt ,pale grey blue blazer ,skin coloured fishnet tights and sandles . Oh my goodness ! My Mum showed me her clear disaproval and told me so . Mum avoided me ,so too did many other family members ,I was ignored .I was not encourged on the wedding photos ,well ,I was placed at the back ,dispite my only being 5ft 2ins . One ,very sweet Auntie admired my flesh coloured fishnet tights and later on when the ignoring got too much for me ,when another Auntie refused to dance with me , my dear Uncle Jack listened to me as I couldn t help weeping . The skirt I wore was short ,but only about 2ins above my knee , certainly it was the skirt my Mum didnt approve of .Still I decided to dance alone ,which I enjoyed ,only when my fun was cut short due to I had to accept an early lift home ,or lift at all . In the mini bus home ,I was inconsoluble and couldn t hold my tears back .Students who were unknown to me were so sweet as they tried to soothe me on the hired bus .Isn t it crazy when almost all of a family group (very big family ) disapprove and thus render you invisable ,because of your chosen outfit .This incident was a couple of decades back and I remember it just now . Such rejection again has brought a tear to my eye .Yes indeed ,true ,it is only clothing and so silly that some will strongly judge you for what you are wearing .A few years back ,here in England , a couple were walking in the park .They loved to wear gothic clothing ,a gang attacked the couple because of what their clothing represented to the gang .The girl was beaten so badly ,she lost her young life .A uniform can represent power and create fear in others and as I sit here writing , I feel that clothing has a bigger impact psychologically ,on us , than we realize . My comments perhaps are a little bit heavy , however , your discussion suddenly brought memories to mind . Thank you Emily for your content ,your style is impeccable ,edgy ,clean and beautiful .

    Hi from Canada in June 2023! This was excellent, thank you. I also noticed it was very relevant to how we see people and groups of people (real or imagined) in society right now. I'm 59, raised very conservatively, and I've always been fascinated by people that really GO for it! In the 80s the Punk kids sitting in the streets, I was so amazed and proud (?) of them. A little jealous, too. 🤗 Now I still dress "up" but love to play with edgy accessories; it's empowering to wear great boots... 😄

    Thanks, Emily, for validating all of these things that I wanted to believe, but needed another voice to express. I live in a town where my style of dress doesn't fit the basic "norm", but I very often get complimented on how I put things together. I love to see someone who obviously has their own style and feels confident in it. I try to always let them know how great they look!

      💐 Yes, Kathleen, I completely agree with you about Emily's points in this video📲 having validated my own suspicions.
      Brava! I'm impressed that you're holding your own while going against the grain of your community🏘️. 😬I'd worry about losing my re-emerging passion for fashion (& individuality) moving to another location🗺️〰️esp. since it was something I allowed to go 💤dormant💤 for a season. I fear I might backslide out of concern😨 of being considered vain. 🥳 I wouldn't want to miss the joy of all this rediscovery & reevaluation.
      😉One of my besties, another native Angeleno, moved to a small suburb of Sacramento where they wear rather generic gear. 😱Even more ordinary jeans & tees to church⛪. She said it's definitely impacted her mode of dress too.
      😎Now, LA is casual capital, but it's something we know how to do with some style. In fact, you can 👀find an amazingly wide array of fashion looks within our typically sunny, hot🥵 climate. Dressing down @ church💒 is unfortunately becoming more common, but they still maintain certain sartorial standards.
      🤗Like you, I also make a point to compliment anyone with an elevated look. I understand & appreciate now more than ever the energy & thought that goes into finding & maintaining style. It's lovely when someone clearly feels worthy of the extra effort.
      💚 Bridget from Cali☘️

    I have realized that I have been dressing to hide. I wear a lot of black but I love a pop of color. I love a black dress with a printed scarf! But I wear black pants with a black tee instead even though I don’t really love outfit. I feel meh. No one notices me me in my black pants and blazer combo. I only dress for myself when I at home. This week I am going to try to dress for me so I feel good and not Meh. I was wondering why I never felt satisfied with my wardrobe. Between your channel and a small wardrobe I am realizing that I have a schizophrenic wardrobe. On the weekends I live in dresses both black and with some dark prints which I will wear with a blazer or bright colors with a black or navy duster when I go out or want to feel amazing! But when I go to work I feel like nothing . I think I have been shopping to be invisible.😬this video really validates what I have been thinking.

      @@EmilyWheatley I have figured out how to shine. I have these black cotton midi racer back dresses that I have been wearing with very bright duster cardigans, ( hot pink, turquoise, cobalt, Kelly green ) with my white Chelsea doc martens. I felt more alive .I am 55 years old and I am over the all black look. Thank you.

    Having kids does make you really reassess who you are. I had PND after having my sons and having to relocate and change jobs all within a couple of years, it took its toll on my identity and affected my confidence massively! I can now look back and be thankful that as you say I sorted my self out and decided I could still be me! I look around and young folk today really don’t seem to care what they look like, they go round in leggings and false eyelashes, very weird! its the old birds like me that seem to be more into fashion! I should say my personal style is the total opposite of yours but I still learn lots from you. I’m what you’d call eclectic maximalist :D

    Emily, thank so much for your analytical and inspiring suggestions and advise. I have favorite fashion, skin care and health UTubers I follow. Your videos lean strongly on your advise and suggestions by experiences vs selling the product. Plus you’re a doll to watch. I wish you were a neighbor to help me with my closet but I will persevere to minimize for a specific style that is me.

    Hello Emily as a fellow veteran of the Fashion Industry and lover of clothing as far back as I can remember, I agree with every lesson you speak of because I have also struggled and triumphed with finding my personal style which ultimately should have been no surprise to me is Eclectic. My ever changing style comes down to a mood/feeling each day when I'm looking through my closet. Like you, one if my more go-to types of styling includes edge but I do have a feeling for it all. Once again it's a mood thing for me. I'm new to your channel and enjoy your style perspective and will continue watching with anticipation of your next episode.

    I’ve said it on other videos, I love your style and you are definitely an inspiration. You are keeping me on track paring down to what I actually enjoy wearing. My wardrobe overwhelms me with clothing that I have no idea why I bought it. What I do wear is simple pieces from Universal Standard, H&M and Kaliyana. So why do I have a purple chiffon blouse with a dozen rows of ruffles? Thanks for all the inspiration, you are actually helping people out here!

    So, I'm 43. When I first started experimenting with style I would watch numerous videos where women would say 'this works and this doesn't, and here's why', and it all sounded very logical. But then a couple years later, it was the same video, but the style that doesn't work was the one that apparently did work a couple years ago. It was kinda exhausting. And the breaking point was when Gen z started embracing mom jeans. Like, you are cosplaying me from my most awkward stage of puberty, a style that has been universally laughed at every year since as a completely unflattering style. But now the style youtubers are here explaining why this style was the more flattering style. Something just clicked, and I realized that it is all kind of meaningless. And that's when I started dressing for myself, and now I actually get a lot more positive comments about my style.

    • @EmilyWheatley

      That is so true about influencers constantly changing their minds about what's in or out. So we go and buy their recommendations only to find a short while later that they are now considered old fashioned. I'm 72 and so I shouldn't be too concerned
      about such things, but I try not to look like a stereotypical old lady. I still wear my skinny jeans because I don't suit any other style. This is why I love watching Emily's videos.
      Her advice is ageless. ❤

    I always dressed for me. I did the layering before J.Crew made it a thing. I layered out of necessity. I was so thin I needed the layers to keep my pants and skirts up and to add bulk to my wafer thin figure.I couldn’t even wear belts, so I threaded through my belt loops. Now at 53, I am still wearing my clothes that way.
    I do think hair very much dictates style.

    I know my style, although sometimes I experiment and I love my wardrobe, most of the time. However, I am sometimes made to feel as if I am overdressed for the occasion.
    Most people want to dress down as much as possible and don't want you to make them feel inadequate by setting the standard too high. Am I right? what to do about this?
    On one occasion, when I went to court, I had a nicer suit on than my lawyer. She complemented me. On another occasion, when I worked in Real Estate , I wore a hounds tooth pencil skirt and a jacket and kitten heels and the Partner Owner was wearing ripped jeans and booties with a knitted top. She said to me: " you know, we are really casual and relaxed around here.". Giving me a dress- down. What's up with that?

    • @EmilyWheatley
      @EmilyWheatley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, I'd say it comes down to the person. Some people appreciate it and some get self conscious if you're dressed up more than them. Such a bummer. But I say, always rock you!

      I always went with it's better to overdressed than under dressed. I went on an interview and my dress was questioned. I told them that wearing a suit to an interview is a show of respect and I understand that I would not dress this way day to day in my position. I got the job

    These are some great lessons. I work with older women, like grandma old and let me tell you, older women (not all, but definitely the ones I worked with) can be so critical and will slip in little things to make to feel “other”. Anyway that being said, I found myself sometimes placating to them by dumbing my style down, I am also edgy, boho, punk, sporty so many things but I didn’t want to be “loud”. But that wasn’t me. I love style, I love fashion, and I love being creative. You have to be you, don’t let others dictate how you be creative with yourself, with how you curate your style. I couldn’t believe I let that happen! Thanks for these lessons and encouraging us fashion friends to be unique and to not give up on our style!
