    You couldn't be more right about dressing for yourself.
    I want to start this of my prefacing the fact that my personal style hasn't changed since I was 11 years old 😂
    I live in a part of Australia where literally everyone dresses exactly the same. I am a minimal goth and always tone down (even more) what I'm wearing as to not draw attention to myself in public. On top of this, I have an extremely strict and religious mother who hates every item of clothing I put on my body because it's not light, colourful or "feminine".
    It has taken me until turning 30 to stop worrying about what other people think and to fully lean into my personal style and guess what!? My co-workers are my biggest support group. No matter what I put on in the morning, everyone loves it and we even joke about how if other people wore my outfits, they wouldn't be able to pull them off because they are so curated for my personal style. I love it.
    This confidence boost from my work life has spilled out into my personal life, my gym life, etc. and finally, my family has come around. To the point of now asking me for style and shopping advice because everything I have learnt from you, Emily Wheatley.
    Thank you for your knowledge and inspiration 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

    I love that you talked about your husband hating on your high rise jeans! Mine does the same. The truth is his style is more preppy and mine is more edgy. I have accepted that the things he wears are not my style and vice versa. And it’s ok! But it took me a looong time to get there.

    Thank you! I am so guilty of "saving my nice clothes" and just feeling boring, bland, and lazy in what I wear. Recently, I have been working on building my capsule wardrobe thanks to your videos. I just bought my first pairs of wide-leg pants and they make me feel amazing! But since they were pricy and I want to "make them last," I've only worn them once since I got them. You are right -- I should wear the pieces I love so I can love them more often!

    • @EmilyWheatley
      @EmilyWheatley  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I used to make this mistake all the time. But if you want to think practically, what is the point of spending a lot of money on something you don't wear lots. That makes it one hugely expensive item!!!!!!! I used to have a job that required I dress expensively, leaving me no cash for non-working wardrobe. Now I try to spend the most on what I wear most often. You can always borrow or hire a dress for a wedding etc but you need the best everyday clothes you can afford.

  • @angiemartin8422
    @angiemartin8422 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As a plus size woman I used to buy clothes that fit but then not wearing them because I couldn't make an outfit out of those pieces. Now instead of thinking about my clothes as individual items, I look at clothes like a wardrobe. I buy clothing with the idea that they should be interchangeable. Tops and bottoms need to be able to work together. Instead of having mixed matched clothes. Not only did this save my wallet, it gave me confidence and the gift of time. I can pick out my clothes in the morning without struggling and feel good about how I look. And I stopped wasting my money.

    Coming from a remote area in northern Canada, and being a little ''chubby'' in my early teens and having a lot of handme down from neighbors and my older sister, it was mind blowing in my late 20's when I heard my friend talking about wearing clothing based on her ''aesthetic'. I remember just thinking - ''what you dont buy clothes just because they fit you!?!?!?!?!'' strangely enough, I lot of my friends who knew me back then, told me they always thought I was well dress and always look original (in a good way). I'm in my 40s now and not to say i never do any Style Mistakes (because I do, sometimes I think you can learn from your mistakes) I always have a clear view of the image I want to project to the world and when I buy a piece of clothing it need to adhere to that image. I have to say, dressing for other people, is a big one I see for young girl dressing sexy when they go out. I always question myself as, are you dressing like that because YOU want to feel sexy (and go for it girl) or because you want the ''other'' to see you as sexy...

    • @EmilyWheatley
      @EmilyWheatley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don't have to stick to one kind of asthetic your whole life I've gone through a wide range of different styles in my lifetime from goth the classic and everything in-between do what makes you happy and feel good and change up your style if you get bored have a few of those pieces in your wardrobe and change it up every now and then I have a very classic style now but I buy trendy pieces and mix them with my more classic pieces you can wear two different styles in one outfit if you want to don't stock to the "rules" if you think it looks good and makes you feel good then they go together and wear them because it makes you happy

      Try selling the clothes that are more expensive. Either on ebay or poshmark or local thrift stores. That helps to make the sting a little less when getting rid of clothes you paid a lot for.

    • @erinlikesacornishpasty4703
      @erinlikesacornishpasty4703 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I stopped donating my clothes regularly, because I realized I was buying the same things over and over again. I now do a "discovery system" I heard about from Hannah Louise Poston, I think. Basically, I have some clothes I "banish" to another closet or a tote for a time, and then "go shopping" for when I want something "new"...or is more often the case, I need a different size. It works. Of course, I've never had a huge amount of clothing anyway 🤷‍♀️.

    The only thing about wearing the good clothes is that most of the time they need to be dry cleaned so that raises your cleaning bills, that’s the way I look at it
    if you’re wearing your good linen you’re not going to throw that in the washing machine you’re wearing your good cashmere you’re not gonna throw that in the washing machine. Thoughts anyone?

    Busted! Thanks for so much food for fashion thought. Saving my nice clothes. Buying for price, or because I found something close to what I want at a thrift store and can't trust anything better will ever come along. FEH! I'm packing for a big trip and where I'm receiving an award. Going through my clothes to pick the wardrobe, you just gave me permission to bring what I want and like to wear, not what I think I need to wear to create an impression. Thank you!

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have definitely bought things I knew I didn't love because I liked the price. I end up buying five things I don't like at $20, when I could have saved that money to buy one thing I loved for $100. Getting high quality doesn't have to mean spending more- maybe just fewer things! I sometimes choose not to wear things out of the house that my husband says looks weird. I should work on this. And, to know what quality is can really change things, agreed! When I first started watching your channel I still did not know exactly what nice jeans were. I took myself to Nordstrom and found out. Now that I have tried those quality jeans on, I can confirm that higher quality clothing makes you feel better!

    I feel these so much. Been there, done that... all of these. I think you can apply all of your tips to make up too. My collection is so much smaller now and I never find myself not knowing what kind of make up look I wanna go for or not liking my make up. This would also work for skincare, haircare etc. Buy what you really love, what really works for you, what does what you want it to do, no matter the trends, no matter the hype, no matter the suggestions for whatever and whatnot. Of course it's fun to try out new things, but only to a certain extend. There's a fine line between it being fun and it being stressful and overwhelming. I personally am in a transitional state in terms of my style right now, because I am just getting the hang of what I really love wearing, but I know I am going in the right direction because I never felt so much like myself when dressing, doing my hair and make up. And part of that is thanks to your amazing videos. You explain everything so well, I was finally able to understand why I never really felt at home with my own wardrobe. You helped me turn the switch to understand and honor my own personal preferences when it comes to how I look. Thank you so much for your amazing work, Emily.

    I am now 33 years old. Since my late 20s I have struggled to find my own style. As a teenager I liked to wear jeans with a metal shirt. But now I don't always find it appropriate.
    When I watch your video I find myself making 3 mistakes:
    1) too much variety
    2) don't invest in the best. That has something to do with number 1. For now I don't dare to buy more expensive pieces, since I'm still looking for my "thing". I liked it when you said to be patient. I think that's my biggest flaw that makes my closet overflowing with too much variety.
    3) Dress up for someone else. I try to combine clothes in a different way so that I can wear them more often. I'll ask my friend for advice. Usually he doesn't like it. He tells me I look like Beverly Goldberg or like a "boring mom". Keep it simple, he says. Easier said than done

    Please tell me more about these high-quality designer jeans! 🧐

    Thank you, Emily, for encouraging each of us to embrace what we like and what we feel good in.
    My denim/pants wardrobe consists of pull-on & stretch (I know….cringe). I carry my weight in the middle, but my hips and legs are relatively smaller. So…when it fits my waist I usually look like I’m swimming in fabric. I don’t want to wear these pants, but I’m majorly stuck in a rut (X 6 years). 😩

      I too have the challenge of finding jeans or pants that fit my shape which is similar to yours. When I was young, I usually bought boys Levis because they actually fit me better. Not even sure where to look for jeans at this point?

      @@SHines-qk9qj I also wore men’s jeans, my favorite were from the Gap (that was 30 yrs ago)!

      Maybe try a mid rise jean that it's a bootcut or a cropped flare. If it was me I'd then style it with a v-neck drapey tee with an effortless tuck into the waist band to emphasize the waist. But the jeans cut can really be anything. I think they main thing is cinching in your waist.

      I’m old enough to remember when Levi started making a fit for women….they were pricey. Two darts added-double the price. My little brother wore them once with a can of Copenhagen snuff in the back pocket and caused a round wear mark …..furious.
      I recently purchased a pair of Madewell with button fly….was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to get them off in time (if you get my drift). Also the warning label stating the color could rub off on upholstery….they have become my favorite jeans.

    Hi Emily, I've only just started on my capsule wardrobe journey (thanks to you!) and already feel so much more confidant and put-together. Since you believe in fewer, higher-quality pieces, could you show us some tips for how you take care of everything? Going from "cheap shoes and synthetics" to real leather boots and linen clothes has been a hard transition for me because I'm investing in expensive, quality pieces but have to research how to take care of each one.

      Yea, I can definitely add it to my list!

      @@EmilyWheatley Thank you! I feel like some people need "obvious" tips like "hang dry your shirts" lol. I only just realized that I shouldn't be throwing all my nice dark jeans in the dryer... and that I don't need to wash everything after only 1 wear.

      @@okashi10 I totally get it. The obvious tips are sometimes the most unknown. Took me a while to discover a lot of them.

    I have some high waisted nude shaping panties I wear under dresses because they make my look so much better in dresses. But my husband calls them granny panties. HOWEVER, he loves me in dresses. I wear dresses more often because of these panties so they stay....
