The chassis is a magnesium / aliminium alloy. It's really sturdy, but also really lightweight. My review unit came in black, and retains no fingerprints. You can also get it in silver if you prefer. In both cases, it's 1.7cm thick, and 1.3kg.
The laptop can be opened, and upgraded, you can switch out the RAM and the SDD as you like, with dual channel RAM slots, and an m.2 slot that supports PCIe4 drives.
My review unit came with a french azerty keyboard, but they have a lot of different layouts, and you can even send them your own to be laser etched, or have a blank keyboard. The super key has a cartoony tux logo, but you can ask for you own super key as well.
You can add an Nvidia RTX 3050ti to turn the laptop into a real workstation. In terms of ports, on the left side, you get the usual kensington lock, a USB C 3.2 Gen 2 port, which supports display port 1.4 and power delivery, a USB A 3.2 Gen 1 port, a full size SD card reader, and a 2 in 1 audio jack.
On the right, you have the barrel charging port, an HDMI 2.0b port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, and a thunderbolt 4 port, which also supports display port 1.4 and power delivery.
The display is a 3K panel, at 2880 by 1800, in a 16:10 aspect ratio. It's 14 inch, and has an anti reflective coating.
It covers 99% of sRGB, 74.7% of AdobeRGB, and 81.1% of DCI-P3. It goes up to 400 nits, the contrast ratio is 1500:1, and it runs at 90hz.
The keyboard feels really good. It's a chiclet style keyboard, with black keys, whether you have the black, or the silver variant. It's backlit, and has a tux super key that you can customize, as I said before.
The touchpad feels awesome, it's super smooth, covered in glass, and it's a joy to use with gestures, it's precise and responsive, and it clicks well.
The webcam goes up to 1080p30, and while it will need some amount of light to not be too grainy, it's far from the worse I've seen.
The microphone is a bit better. You'll need to lower the default gain, but the voice is clear, and you can't really hear fan noise, although it will pick up on touchpad clicks and keyboard presses. It's really not bad for a laptop mic.
As per the speakers, they're bottom firing, and they're also decent. They're not tinny, they don't distort at high volumes, and they get loud enough. Nothing fancy, but they do the trick perfectly for a youtube video or a movie.
The 12700H is a very powerful CPU, with 14 cores, and 20 threads, and a max frequency of 4.7Ghz. On geekbench 5, it gets 1781 in single core, and 8388 in multi core, which means it beats my desktop 5800H in single core, and gets extremely close in multi core.

It's cooled with a dual fan system, with 2 fans and 2 heatpipes, and uses liquid metal, which means temps never got high, staying at around 40 degrees Celsius at idle, and about 80°C under heavy load.
In terms of battery life, I got around 7 and a half hours of youtube video playback in a loop over wifi, at 50% brightness with bluetooth on. With a more regular workload of web browsing, listening to music, writing this script, and watching the occasional video or running a test or 2 on the laptop, I got 9h.

International shipping! That's what this specific company lacks, sadly.
I think that CPU is a tradeoff - too powerful for most stuff you'd do on a laptop, hurts the battery and is not an AMD CPU. Based on the price, it doesn't even beat the XPS, which is a terrible laptop. And it certainly does not beat the pricier X1 Carbons, Thinkpads or Precisions even if you ignore the Intel CPU.
It is nice, but there are quite a few tradeoffs.

The ONE tradeoff is that it only has the ability to use NVIDIA GPU from the store. AMD would probably be more flexible considering how NVIDIA treats linux and BSDs
For high end gpu on Linux use the most common use might be VFX and unfortunately most of the software is Nvidia not AMD optimised.

It‘s more how Linux trades Nvidia. If they wouldn‘t try to play their ideology game and would just accept that companies are not interested in their GPL shit, the driver situation on Linux would maybe be better
@@milowagnitz7310 linux doesn't "bully" poor old nvidia. there's black box firmware for drivers in a lot of apps and cards that work just fine on linux. nvidia just doesn't make a lot of their stuff compatible with linux
but, talking about the gpl, what happens when you open up the drivers? looking at the past (mantle for example) you actually unleash 50% more performance that was being destroyed by inefficient bloatware.
but, talking about ideology: if you like not owning the things you pay for, getting forced updates that make your card slower, bloated blackbox firmware, built in backdoors, monopoly pricing, etc. then fine. that's your choice bro.
@@milowagnitz7310 nobody forces anyone to do anything. nVidia historically have tried to lock their own hardware down to prevent open source developers from writing drivers for their graphics cards, which effectively lock everyone out of using them without their proprietary drivers. That's a pretty nasty move, regardless of how you look at it
TUXEDO is making itself THE standart linux experience on a laptop.
It's very exciting to see brands like tuxedo or system76 offering the combo hardware+software for linux.

@Tom Smith they actually do a lot of work to get it to work well out of the box. For instance, there's this one bug with Nvidia drivers, so they actually spent a lot of time getting in touch with Nvidia and sending laptops and debugging information to Nvidia, and they got the bug fixed. They really optimize the OS to their hardware.
@Tom Smith The point is they do a lot more than just throw Linux on a prebuilt laptop. There's a lot of digging around the hardware and debugging and recently, even custom builds. For instance, recently they asked their ODM for two cooling fans instead of one, and a more recent AMD CPU then they were originally going to use. It's sort of blurring the line between a pre-built clivo and a custom hardware. It's really exciting to see all the work they do to make sure that you have a fantastic clinics experience on their hardware. Companies like them in system 76 are fantastic, I love to see it.
If Tuxedo makes itself available in India without having to pay the customs before I get a new laptop, it'll jump to my number 1 consideration and if a good laptop is in my budget, I'll get it 100%
I hope Tuxedo does some of the work to set up the defaults on the officially offered distros at least. Fractional scaling is a pain to configure for all apps: native apps, electron apps and browsers can all want their own settings.

@@federicocucinotta7772 it's not a tuxedo issue, it's not *really* a linux issue either, it's just a scaling issue, it's very hard to address and even macs suffer from it, which is why they only ship in very specific resolutions, but have issues with a lot of external displays as a result
@@24hhhhours Yeah, sux with GTK and GNOME. With KDE (of what I heard) it's not a problem at all. But yea ... it's KDE. That's why I use just a 2K external Display und FullHD internal to use Gnome without glasses.
@@foss_sound The problem is even if you are running KDE, apps that use GTK will still look horrible. So I dont see why you are mentioning KDE here. Also Gnome under Wayland doesnt have any problems with scalling. It works perfectly. The only problem with Wayland is applications not supporting Wayland. They will run under Xwayland which also look horrible. Overall I hate the situation right now, it's a mess. Both Xorg and Wayland suck. I personally use a 16 Inch notebook with a builtin 3K display. GTK symbols are tiny and have to use **glasses** so see something.
They did a really good job with this one. I hope System 76 starts to make this much effort with their laptop line. Desktops are great, but......

The problem os that laptops aren't subject to the ATX standard that desktops are.
Each laptop motherboards as a results is effectively a custom made PCB and there are only so many manufacturers who are willing to work with a company at the scale of System76.

It does look like a solid little machine. I very much appreciate the 14 inch screen size. It's a nice sweet spot between portability and screen real estate.
Them allowing you to have your own layout laser etched on the keyboard and the case is super cool. Really allows you to make the machine your own. Linux is known for the option to customize it to taste and it's cool to see this extend to the hardware.

Very impressive system. Looking at their website, I especially like the 16" version. The specs are not quite as good as my M1 MacBook Pro, but it costs $1000 less. And runs Linux natively. If I were in the market today for a developer laptop, this would probably be my first choice.
I still prefere the M1 MacBook Pro, it is simply better. Sure, more expensive, but I don't care... Anyway the Tuxedo is not a bad choice too.
My cheaper-than-Mac Ryzen9 5900HX laptop is faster than M1/M1 Pro at rather important practical benchmark: linux kernel, gcc, llvm, etc compilation in docker containers. And it runs Linux perfectly. But not from the ground up: some distro hopping and powertop/governor tuning is a must (to be silent and cold at idle).

@@nemesjs no, not even a 2018 one, my point is... Performance is important but isn't everything, I would miss de mini-led wide gammut 120hz display, the 6 speaker studio grade sound quality, etc... But I see no problem, many just want performance and for this Tuxedo is great.
The specs are almost on par with the most powerful MBP, but the InfinityBook Pro 16 weights half a kilo less, and IT FELS. I had both laptops - the MBP feels HEABY at 2147g, while the Tuxedo feels light at 1.5kg. Surprising but true.
However, the keyboard on the InfinityBook Pro is crap.
Really good review. It is nice to see a decent laptop running Linux that does not come with 'issues'. Though I've had lots of 'fun' trying to sort out the mess and inconsistencies of linux GUI apps and subsystems and how well they work with font scaling and high DPI. This continues to be something Linux vendors can't get right, pushing people away. Saying that my old 4K Windows 7 machine did not do a great job of this either.

I was going to say that the only let-down is the lack of backlighting on the keyboard... But it seems like that's an option on the configuration!
What a great little laptop. I'm stuck with Windows on my main system for gaming and photo editing, but I think Linux would be absolutely perfect on a thin and light laptop like that. Perhaps I'll consider a Linux laptop if I end up getting a thin and light for class. I'd certainly love to.

Hey Nick, just dropping back in here to say after this review I cancelled my order for the StarLabs StarBook Mk 6 to this one, I've had it a week now and really love it. I waited and waited for StarLabs but I think they were pretty unrealistic about completion and delivery times, so their product run wasn't ready for mass market in my opinion. Tuxedo on the other hand got me their machine in a little under 4 weeks.
Price aside, that does look like a very nice machine. If my 10th gen Lemur didn't have a few more years of life in it, I would totally be considering this one.

also got this beauty like a month ago. I can say I am really happy with it. It does have problem with xorg display drivers. After having POP OS installed, i could not switch resolution, so had to stick with ubuntu...

It's ALMOST perfect. I really want to buy this laptop, but there is no ANSI keyboard layout for it. They had an ANSI version of their Gen6, but that's no longer available with a discrete nVidia card.
I bought the TUXEDO Pulse 15 - Gen2. I went full out: 64GB Ram and 2x SSD's. I requested Kubuntu to be pre-installed.
Very happy with just about everything! The keyboard is not the best, but I should mention I come from a 2012 Mac Book Pro, so it's probably a little unfair 🙂
Anyway, this is my private daily driver now and has very little issues (some KDE specific issues - but the hardware is perfect!).
The service from Tuxedo is absolutely great. I am in the Netherlands so sending it over was no issues. The Laptop build takes some time, but they do keep you updated through the process. I waited just over a week.
Edit: I should add I work mostly on the Logitech Mechanical Wireless Keyboard and Logitech MX Mouse. They paired with the Laptop perfectly and the battery levels are reflected in KDE with low battery warnings working as well.
KDE5 does evolve greatly, especially Dolphin File Browser and the Notifications for File Operations mit Bandwith-Speeds etc. is always handy!
The keyboard is dumb. They use the stupid ISO layout, when most of the world uses ANSI. Also, there's no separation between F4/F5 or F8/F9. All keys are squished together and too narrow, because they wanted a half-assed numpad. The arrow keys are not separated from the rest, so I had to look at where they were all the time.
ThinkPads are renowned for their legendary keyboards. Why doesn't Tuxedo use that layout?

Really glad to see 90hz on more laptops. That or 120hz is the baseline for me now, even on thinner laptops. 16:10 is nice too, though personally I prefer 3:2.

What a splendid, high performance and seemingly well made laptop. Should be great for Linux and even for Windows. I like that the spec can be tuned to one's particular needs and that it appears to have been built with repairability in mind.

Maybe Asahi Linux GPU development progress will make it great system on Apple SIlicon macs, but... Still no go. Non-removable SSD and limited repairability is show stopper for eco-friendly people buying laptop for a decade of heavy usage.
I am always happy to see 16:10 aspect ratio displays on laptops, as well as an ISO layout, most laptops don’t have these.
I am interested to see how they implemented their liquid metal contact with the CPU, there are some specific design considerations you need to think about for liquid metal, especially in a laptop. I wonder how it would hold up over-time. I can’t ask you to take it apart because you would have to clean and reapply liquid metal, which can destroy it if you aren’t familiar with it since it is very different from regular thermal paste.
I saw this video suggested a few times and I was like "oh here we go with the clickbait" and I didnt want to watch it. Today I decided to watch it just to leave a bad comment...I was wrong, this is really a linux laptop with no trade offs. amazing work by tuxedo! next step could be to have their own bios like system76? That screen resolution is perfect and I don't think it should change. Linux distros should be the ones that finally start supporting fractional scaling properly. I know fractional scaling is hard but Windows and macOS do it really well so there is no technical reason that Linux can't too. I know Wayland is a good first step and Gnome and KDE have a good start but there is a lot more to be done there for every DE.
Ubuntu does a very good Job at that.
@@ArniesTech Yes because it uses Gnome which, like KDE, is one of the two that really support it better now with Wayland. But if you have a NVIDIA card, you're stuck with X11 which does not have good fractional scaling. Of course, this is Nvidia's fault that you are stuck with X11 so can't really blame anyone but them for that.
Is this a distro or DE level problem? I also never really had issues running Linux on my laptop. The scaling looks perfectly fine to me!
@@federicocucinotta7772 Mostly a DE level problem but a lot of the time DEs are associated with distros. For example, Linux Mint develops the Cinnamon desktop environment and pretty much refuses to accept Wayland as a priority. Elementary OS develops the Pantheon DE and refuses to support fractional scaling for pretty weird logic of "fractional scaling doesn't really exist and making it work is too hard so no". Also, distros can choose whether to include Wayland or X11 out of the box with the specific DE and that can also factor in.

The aluminium/magnesium chassis looks pretty solid. Feels like the best Linux laptop, but I'm wondering how the upcoming AMD-based StarFighter will hold up, as it seems to be priced the same.

I just hope they stick with the original 4K screen rather than this QHD high refresh panel they’re considering. I want 4K with integer scaling, none of this fractional nonsense.
Linux Desktop really needs the power of manufacturers behind it--like this.
I think tuxedo laptops are pretty nice. But I still think the best laptop, even for linux is the framework. It works wonderfully with linux, and the framework team has made all the right choices with their machine.
I wish Framework had laptops with a bit of a larger screen and a higher refresh rate.
Except down firing speakers. I wish all the manufacturers would stop doing that.
Except Framework still isn't available in a lot of European countries while Tuxedo can be ordered with free delivery to most parts of Europe right now

Great and thought through machine. Fore only missing out on a touch screen and a 360 tablet mode. That would be crowning it for me.
As a Student i am still using my x260. This tuxedo is - according to specs and Reviews - my current favorite as a successor after i will finish my degree in a few months. Still i have one question about the tuxedo: does it Support battery Charge Limits like my old x260? (95% state of health for the battery after this many years is Something i would want from Machine for 1.600€)

Good device. Was my daily driver for some time.
But there are also some parts which have potential for improvement.
For video conferences I highly recommend external microphones and speakers.
Beside of this, the notebook and Software is really good.
Updates always worked and I never had any issues.
Support was really awesome, because speakers where exchanged after some hardware issue.
No fuck around at all.

I have the machine. I would say speakers barely ok, have to keep volume always on max. Also have some weird interference between speakers and wifi, such that sometimes loose audio completely. Will be sending to for warranty service. Also, disapointed it doesn't support S3 sleep. Display remains black after waking, both in Windows and Ubuntu 22.04. S0 / Modern Standby in Windows sucks, got few cases of battery loosing 7-10% per hour.

Huh, I kinda expected longer battery life with that huge 99 Whr battery. Maybe UV/setting a slighty lower TDP would improve this slightly.

Other than the battery life (which is fine but could be slightly better) this would be my perfect work laptop.
I am looking for a new laptop and this is on my list - but no default Wifi 6E option - I know I can probably install an AX210 card myself, but it would be nice OOB. Also no default Mint option

I was considering buying this laptop, but they never made a Gen 7 US ANSI edition, so I ended up buying an M1 MacBook Air.

I had one off these for 6 months , had to get it repaired 3 times before returning it. Was amazing but a monday model i Think. I really wanted this to be the perfect laptop , but not this time. Consider trying Them again.

Incredible laptop, this is exactly what I would be looking for. You mentioned that there is a sport for an M.2 SSD. Do you know if it is possible to use it as a second boot drive? In other words, have Linux on one SSD and Windows on the other? I require having both. I tried researching this and always got somewhat confusing answers...
If you want to, you can just make two partitions on the SSD, one for windows, other for Linux. You can however make them on two separate drives, e.g. 1st SSD for Linux and 2nd for windows

@@federicocucinotta7772 you then would need to buy the storage edition of this notebook, which supports two SSDs, but then also comes with a smaller battery.
If you buy the notebook from Tuxedo with a dual-Boot Windows configuration, it works like a charme, also on one SSD. (have two SSDs on my Gen6, but dual-Boot from the faster one)

Tuxedo seriously needs to have their laptops have ANSI layout options that are up to date, their ODM's have support for it

Great machine, but when will these manufacturers finally add a T-shaped arrow key arrangement? Finding these half-height keys by touch can be really finicky, and I use them a LOT. On a MacBook, it's easy.
I'm glad you specified that you have to send the laptop back after you complete the review. That isn't necessarily obvious to people who watch these kinds of videos. Knowing that you don't get to keep the hardware you're reviewing makes it easier to believe we're getting an unbiased opinion!
There are definitely some tradeoffs. Needing to fractional scale is a major headache. I did this with one laptop in the past and won't do that again until fractional scaling with Wayland is better. I wish that they offered the 1920 x 1200 resolution panel they offered in the past. Also, I read that performance is hindered with USB-C charging, that full performance during charging is only with the barrel charger. Finally, 8-11 hrs with this battery is great for a machine of this performance, but I wish they had gone for an Apple killing battery sipping model with a lower resolution screen and an Intel U chip. That would have been world-beating.
Fractional scaling seems to be working fine in Gnome Wayland for me 🤷🏾♂️

Why do you think it is 290 € more expensive than Slimbook Executive 14 with same specs (Intel XE, 16GB, 500NVMe)?
I haven’t looked at a side-by-side comparison in a long time, but when I researched possible options back then, I noticed that with the Slimbook models you often get cheaper components for RAM, SSD drives, etc., which eventually add up. If I configured the Slimbooks very similar to the Tuxedos, there was no real price difference anymore.
@@thomaswenzl5481 What you say is not true, go in and configure the same components, choose the brands. Slimbook is always cheaper.
I hope this version is much better thant the 6 gen. This is a laptop at premium price that feels really cheap. The battery doesn't last more than 2h if you are running containers or doing real work, this could be directly realated to the 3k display. If you reinstanled any operating system you had to remember to add `i915.enable_psr=0` to GRUB.
The laptop gets extremely hot and the solution is to run a typescript application (tuxedo-control-center) to be able to control the fans. I replaced the battery with a new one after 1 year of having the laptop,, support though was very efficient and helpful but in less than 2 months it dropped the capacity a 15%.
Luckily I didn't pay for this laptop but a 1600 euros you are far better with any XPS or Thinkpad in regards to durability and Linux. I don't think would choose any other brand (at the current prices) over Dell or Lenovo.

I received mine a couple of days ago and I really like it so far. The only issue I had was with the touchpad rattling when touching the lower half which was a kind of disappointing out-of-the-box experience for the amount of money I paid for it. I've read on Reddit that other buyers also had this issue.
I've dealt with it by opening it, removing the battery and adjusting the leaf springs spring on the touchpad. Idk man.. I've mixed feelings about Tuxedo, this shouldn't really shouldn't happen on a ~2k€ laptop.
How bad does it feel to have the power key placed where the delete would normally be?

@@ppbdrinker It hasn't really bothered me that much, I've yet to power off the machine by accident. By default you have to keep the button pressed for a short time for it to register a key press so it's not like it's going to power off as soon as you touch it by accident. Moreover, as far as I'm aware you can change the power key handling behavior so that it does nothing on short press (see for example HandlePowerKey and HandlePowerKeyLongPress in `man 5 logind.conf`).
That being said, I am planning to change the key mapping a bit in the future (if possible, I haven't looked into it yet) and the position of the delete key is definitely going to change.
