Why is my Rear AC not working?

  • So what happens when the air-conditioning in your car tests good, but your family is not getting along because everybody is all hot and sweaty and angry in the back of the car? I’m Rick Smith master certified technician. Today we’re working on a 2008 Ford expedition and I thought I’d tell you little bit about what we found and help you understand the systems a bit more. This vehicle has dual air-conditioning so it has an air conditioner in the front and in the rear. In both cases we start with a heater core. A heater core is like a small radiator and basically we run hot radiator fluid through that and it gives us heat. Then we also have an evaporator and the evaporator is basically the same thing, a small radiator but instead of hot engine coolant we have cold refrigerant through it. Then we have a blower that blows cool air on our face and we can direct that air either over the cold part or over the hot part or to our feet or face or a mixture of the temperatures. First of all I want to show you one of the things that we found. If you look way up there that’s where the air comes out to go up to the top of the car to blow onto our faces and if you’ll see there’s a gap in that tubing right there. On this car where we have this cold air that were now basically piping into the panels of the vehicle instead of onto our face. So we don’t have good airflow. Secondly in here is that evaporator we talked about, you can’t see it so I’m going to show you what an evaporator looks like. Now the evaporator sweats and it gets moisture condensation on it just like a cup of ice water sitting on a hot day. This is what can happen with the moisture, it collects all the lint and everything on it because it’s kind of like your dryer in your house you know how you have to clean the lint trap all the time. So about 25% of the evaporator in this car has lint on it and so we can’t transfer the temperature and make a cold. So we have two problems back here, one blowing on our face hard enough because blown into the wrong spot and number two we can’t transfer the temperature enough because we have that lint buildup. Keep in mind this is a very big vehicle and this is the middle of July in Phoenix Arizona search blistering hot so we’re gonna shoot some more videos on the front but this tells you what’s going on the back so stay tuned on our next video until next time safe travels and blessings to you.

    Thank you for this information. I have a 99' chevy express 3500 and the air hasnt been blowing in the back for months. Now I have a good idea where to start looking.

    Hola amigo.

    Muchas gracias por la presente información, gracias de nuevo por compartir tu tiempo y experiencia, además de la buena explicación en los videos , son muy bien explicados. Tengo una pregunta, en un sistema de doble evaporador la forma para poner el gas es el mismo o es una forma diferente. Gracias recibe cordial saludo desde el bello Puerto de Tampico Tamaulipas México. Es cuanto. A la Orden.

    Hi, thanks for the video, I was wondering if those AC are conected to the same one link to engine compressor or if the rear AC have his own AC compressor? Mean, gas pressure is one for both or are separately systems?

      They share the same AC Compressor

    I have a 2015 Ford Expedition n I press the rear buttons to activate but nothing no air comes out. I did a vacuum and recharge on refrigerant . Could it be the fan or something with the fuses? For the rear a.c system?

      @Ray_Ray ปีที่แล้ว

      What did you wind up finding out?? Going through similar with a Nissan Armada. I changed fuses and recharged like you said but ultimately I think it’s the A/C compressor or the actual blower motor, that’s why hence it’s not blowing. Please let me know something. In Texas here, it’s about to get hot.

      @@Ray_Ray No air movement? Something wrong with the blower motor circuit, if you got a new fuse/relay then the motor is likely bad. If you have air movement but it is not cooling, check if the ac compressor clutch is engaging, if it is then either there is a leak or compressor is bad. If clutch isnt engaging then maybe the compressor clutch is bad or the relay for it.

    Mr Rick where can I find instructions on how to recharge me front and rear ac system on. 04 explorer. It takes 13 oz of oil how do I get that much in

    • @MercieJAutoCare
      @MercieJAutoCare  ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, the old oil has to be removed. If you over oil the system, you will cause all kinds of problems including super high pressure.

      Just because this isn't the issue you are having doesn't make it unhelpful.

    Hey man, i bought a GX470 with no AC, diagnosed the compressor, replaced it, pulled a vacuum, no leaks, illed with oil and refrigerant. Everything was good until i tried to use the rear AC lol, didnt realize it wasnt working. So because theres no leaks and the front is ice cold, the rear will blow but just waem air comes out, what would be your best guess? Clogged evaporator?

    • @MercieJAutoCare
      @MercieJAutoCare  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Either a bad rear expansion valve or a bad air mix door problem in the back.
