that is a lot of information about mediaeval grimoires I did not know until now, like how ridiculously specific the spells often are or how they're often written in grammatically incorrect Latin with lots of typographic errors
YES! Interested in watching you translate a page from a Latin text. Im reworking my tabletop system and so happen to be focused on magical texts and how to gain knowledge from one. That sort of video topic would really do me a great deal of good.
Great job. Raises catholic, my wife is Jewish.I studied 8 years of Latin, and I can agree Latin grammar is a code onto itself. I think its funny when ppl translate Latin so fast in Hollywood. Blows my damn mind. I'm like wow you conjugated and declined and phrased it in the proper tense and you just read it like English..? After all that Latin I still suck at Latin. Its fun and beautiful. But there are few who can read Latin on the fly.
That's because Latin typically isn't properly taught as a language. Aquiring a language isn't about learning grammar or doing translations. When you've actually learned a language, you understand it directly and think in the language, you're not translating into or from it.
Halfway convinced that humans have just always been playing Dungeons and Dragons forever throughout all history and books like this are just some DM's custom spell tome for his players
Are European magical texts more likely to invoke demons rather than angels? Any chance you could do a video talking about which groups of people might lean more in one direction than the other and why?
Great question. My suspicion is that much more deals with angels than demons - it's just so much more dangerous to work directly with demons at that time. Even angel magic is highly suspect. You really start seeing more straight demonic magic in the early modern period and especially, strangely enough, in France during the Enlightenment. A great text with a wide range of essays on specifically angel magic is _Invoking Angels: Theurgic Ideas and Practices, Thirteenth to Sixteenth Centuries_ ed. Fanger if you are curious! Thanks so much for the support Phreddy!
"(Sic) I dislike calling these (illusions)... Because they seem to actually summon (the thing) for a short while" Weird that D&D and CLM 849 have that in common.
Seriously, you should have an entire set of apparel that has quotes like except your grandma is a necromancer on it because you say things like this all the time and it's super funny
I am newly obsessed with your channel. How does one begin an academic study in this area?.... by reading all of those books you listed ... 🤓 thank you!
I dont fully understand Latin, but I know the Latin Mass Prayers. During the Eucharistic Litergy, the Priest does something similar to what you mentioned. He summons the spiritual circle (Kingdom of Heaven) to come join the celebration of the mass in Holy Communion. I know you mentioned in certain castle rituals, the demonic may be summoned to the circle. My question is, in order for the a particular ritual to be good or bad spirits, ia depending on the names they call upon, is that correct? I just want to make sure I'm not misunderstanding something so serious. After the priest calls on heaven (saints and angels) to join the Eucharistic Litergy, he then calls on the Holy Spirit to transubstanciate the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. Though I've never looked at this as a spell, would it be considered a form of magic, hypothetically speaking? Just to confirm, I only ask out of understanding in the "magical realm" of things, rather than agreement in the belief itself. This was always considered a touchy subject growing up due to it's superior nature, and potential harm it may cause when being misused. I genuinely appreciate all this knowledge you are sharing. These videos are humbling and fruitful 🙌🙏🏼
this problem with translation is pretty common with quechua, an indigenous language from the Andes, where i came from. it was not written before colonization and older texts are virtually impossible to understand, even with fluency. until this day we don't have an universal grammar, so each nation have their own "written style". at the moment I have 4 dictionaries at home. same language, but completely different words.
A question that hopefully someone maybe able to answer. I’m Roman Catholic and really enjoy Dr. Sledge talking about these various topics. However, I wasn’t actually expecting him to read portions of these demonic texts. I wonder if I’m opening myself up to this stuff or if it is ok for me to study because I’m actually not trying to conjure spirits or demons. Love your work regardless Dr. Sledge!
Most interesting, as usual... While I would be fascinated to watch the process of deciphering a mediæval manuscript, I'd also love to know your take on "The Book of Abramelin". You likely have referred to this elsewhere, but I'm curious about your estimation of the textual sources, and any further thoughts you may have on the ritual itself.
Do you think, perhaps, that the error in the text might be a basic form of copyright, ie Davinci's deliberate sabotage of some of his designs? Not saying the scribe knew that, but perhaps the orginal writers/compilers did.
@@TheEsotericaChannel just shooting a thought. But it would make some sense, allowing a minor monopoly because only someone who knew the correct pronunciation would successfully preform the spell, and woe to those who use trial and error upon the script.

"(Sic) I dislike calling these (illusions)... Because they seem to actually summon (the thing) for a short while"
Weird that D&D and CLM 849 have that in common.
Yeah it would be interesting to see how you translate a page. As a cartographer sometimes map mark ups are quite messy!
Depends on your interests - I'll be doing an episode on academic study and my story at some point in the future. Stay tuned!
Thank you

Is that Pazuzu hanging from your vest, near the bottom of the frame? ;)
Is the "Munich Manual of demonic magic" available online in the original Latin?
Yep - the original MS can be viewed here: daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/0003/bsb00037155/images/
Thank you 🙏🏼
Wow a video attempting to translate a page from this would be GREAT
I did one - check th-cam.com/video/JYmnphCgzjw/w-d-xo.html
i thought i was too high but it was just your transition playing games on me
Interested in seeing how translation of old text works!
Sledge!
I'm pretty sure you're fine - Latin isn't magical
@@TheEsotericaChannel haha thank you doctor sledge, I really enjoyed your show on kabahlah with Jimmy Aiken btw
Well you'd have to do the milk and honey thing as well, not just read the text.
Do you know of/recommend the book A History of Magic, Witchcraft, and the Occult by DK?
You must be really down bad if you're trying to build a task force of Satan, Cupid and Jesus to secure your crush.
i adore your lectures, but you might need to raise me from the dead after the chapelle show bit.
I have tried divinatory necromancy using Tarot and Elder Futhark Runes.
I am curious about the factual history of Tarot and Norse Runes.
6:20 "...except your grandmother is a necromancer" LolololololololololololoL
Chappelle show reference had me dyin!!!😂😅😂
and that’s why prince symbol sign is like the hermetic one wit the cross wow i’m so smart prince was a necromancer i have so much proof
I see those D&D dice on your table there 👀
That castle summoning spell sounds like a summoning from a final fantasy video game
Thank you for this info! How can I cite this video?
Do you think, perhaps, that the error in the text might be a basic form of copyright, ie Davinci's deliberate sabotage of some of his designs?
Not saying the scribe knew that, but perhaps the orginal writers/compilers did.
If so then every single Ms does this - no two are exact, far from it
@@TheEsotericaChannel just shooting a thought. But it would make some sense, allowing a minor monopoly because only someone who knew the correct pronunciation would successfully preform the spell, and woe to those who use trial and error upon the script.
u know this homie reads, like half his book shelves are bending because of how many books lmao, love this cat, keep doing it bruh bruh
Yeah, those poor shelves :)
is the necromancers manual available.on amazon? are there any witness or testimonies that this spell written in that book is really effective?
Yep and nope.
