After first hearing your suggestion that most grimoires presuppose a Catholic, Latinate audience - it seems blindingly obvious that their readership was clerical. As one of Darwin's contemporaries said about his evolutionary theory - 'How did I not see this before?'
I Love what you do also something kind of funny is that historically European practitioners of exorcism were also considered necromancers. The binding or expelling of spirits is necromancy in that world view. Not too many people take interest in this stuff from a scholarly perspective it is nice to see someone else who is interested in it from that perspective.
I love the idea of 'practice based editing' in a nercomantic text. Like 'Skull spoke Latin instead of Greek, next time halving the olive oil in the crucible'.
Historically and esoterically accurate and at the same time deliciously ironic and even sarcastic at times. In short: it couldn't be better! Very recommendable!
Thanks Dr. Sledge for your knowledge, specially for taking the time to explain it in a slow pace. For me as a non-native English speaker is of great help. Greetings
As someone who went to grad school with similar academic interests to Sledge, I was constantly frustrated by overhearing the name and finding out they always meant some guy from a show I hadn't seen and not Fredrick II Hohenstaufen's advisor and astrologer.
You are hitting your stride. Excellent video and discussion. Your wit and wisdom is surely proof against all evil and medieval spirits. Keep doing what you are doing... It's a fallen world, you know. The world could use a good exorcism.
thank you so much for doing these videos! ive been having so much fun binge watching them. im glad there is a scholarly channel that is into all the "weird" stuff i like but i have not had the chance to really look into.
I very much appreciate you sharing your extensive knowledge on the serious side of historical magick and occult studies while having great taste in your sense of humor.
I just love how sophisticated and promoting of intellectualism this channel is. We don't have this in Florida, especially not in South Florida. So wonderful to find a place that encourages philosophical and theological thinking. I am frustrated how mediocre and incompetent academia has turned out in the last 20 years where I live. Anyways keep promoting and encouraging intellectualism and academic studies. We need this!!! We need to stop being afraid of knowledge, especially powerful knowledge that can make living more fascinating and interesting.
Your videos are always stunningly entertaining and informative. I greatly appreciate all your hard work and humor! Shocked and confused why NecronomiCon isn't a thing.
I would love to go such a convention. Unfortunate, where I live we have more cantankerous, fornication technicians than actual intellectual mages. The people here prefer conjuring low quality fornication trophies than actually thinking outside of their private parts and provoke powerful spirits that can assist us on being great mortals. The anti-intellectualism is dominate in South Florida at the moment.
LMAO... Goonies.... hehehe.... I know part of this text has been translated and will be coming out soon, but I want it all ! No doubt many other texts need to be translated at all, we all need to work together to STORM THE VATICAN LIBRARY!
I am in awe at your erudition. If I may, two small corrections in the pronunciation of two Italian words I heard in your videos, both referring to the position of the stress on the correct syllable: , not (stress on the third from last -- if you are familiar with ancient Greek, it's a Proparoxytone word). The same goes for (you mentioned Paul of in another video. WIth my best wishes for your excellent scholarly work.
Fascinating. I was in Medici palace at Florence , their collector obsession was mindblowing, beside art, they had collections of ethnic objetcs from all around their known world. They even had a room about jewish history (maccabees with hanukia fresco). Thank you. Adored this episode. כל הכבוד Doctore 😊❤ תודה רבה
I have to wonder if there's any overlap with medical doctors of the time -- as I recall, they had a lot of trouble with the authorities because they also needed corpses to experiment on to learn the foundations of anatomy today.
Have you ever read Robert Nye's 1991 novel "The Life and Death of my Lord Gilles de Rais"? It's impeccably researched, and of course you get the Italian sorcerer Francesco Prelati as De Rais' primary "influencer." It's a great read.
Great video, so thankful to have found your channel and your fantastic work. I have been in a similar study of topics for the past decade now. Such a shame I didn't find you sooner
yep I'm the one watching a video about necromancy. No judgements. I love the pin in the dead foot way to put folks off their dinner. Brilliant. Must try it.
Many thanks, as usual! Almost persuades me to return to Rome. They never mentioned this kind of stuff in kiddie Catechism class! They'd have had far more attention from bored boys who really, really didn't get the fuss about 'virginity' - Holy or (in particular) personal. What was that Demon's name, again? Is he on Facebook?
Christian monks translated and recorded essentially all the western and middle eastern works that survive, its natural that in this flow of knowledge some were seduced by dark magic out of curiosity which is no different than modernity where you can download a pdf of a grimoire and some people do.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I feel attracted to Nigromancy Necromancy. Talking to spirits is my thing. Can you help me get a real Nigromancy Necromancy book?
I played d&d. I was a necromancer. I had the best dm ever- Chuck Evans. I've been trying to find him for like 10 years no luck. 😢 Chuck if you are watching this and happen to see this comment, hit me back. You never know... 🤓👍
Speaking about weird coincidences... I was trying to read and translate the spirit catalogue found in the Fasciculus Rerum Geomanticarum of the Biblioteca Laurenziana in Firenze since it's freely available for online consultation or download in PDF format (because I'm studying the goetic and solomonic tradition and I'm trying to "connect" the different catalogues of Spirits in the various grimoires)... And your next video it's on that same book. That's pretty weird.
@@owenleal I'm studying it because I'm a practicing ceremonial/chaos magician and I practiced goetic magick before. But I'm also curious and very interested in the history and the academic interpretation of the various grimoires of this tradition. About beginning to research goetic magick, there are a lot of interesting books about it, both on the more practical side and with a more critical and historical perspective. I would recommend the Illustrated Goetia by Lon Mylo DuQuette and any books by the late Jake Stratton-Kent, dr. Stephen Skinner or Joseph H. Peterson (among others) :)
I love how we're all like "for my 5e campaign!" When we know damn well that it is pure and beautiful curiosity of learning about the things billions of human beings would have been brutally and violently prosecuted for just searching out. No judgment here, and I'm overflowing with happiness from finding this channel. Thank you for your work! But I will probably have to swap to po*n if someone sees me watching this, as it would be easier to explain! XD
I think you may have forgotten to add the cards with links to the videos on the Munich Necromancer’s Manual and Scholastic Magic? But regardless, thanks for yet another very enlightening video...and list of books to read 👍🏽
Its Catholic nature reminds me of the "Liber Juratus Honorii" or Sworn Book of Honorius. But I'm sure people in the 1400s were still mystified by tales of the Templars a hundred years prior, who were arrested on charges of being involved with some kind of heresy. The allegorical tale at the beginning of Honorius even has a striking similarity to the Templar's demise.
Fascinating I think that my only readings on this matter is Arthur Edward Waite's Book of Black Magic and Pacts and Abra Melin the Mage possibly modified by Samuel Macgregor Mathers. It seemed to me ,at the time,to be rather convoluted superstitious nonsense although the Abra Melin system clearly has the aim, seen sort of through the lense of Jungian psychology,of isolating and developing the higher self.sadly my Latin is very basic and I am reminded of what Israel Regardie said what he wanted if he was reincarnated 'good parents and a classical education'.

He still doesn't spill much, but it is the only material I know of in English about Palo Maybey (in Cuba called "Renia de Paulo" that is not written by people who don't practice it and are usually hostile to it. The Necronomicon line was pretty damn funny.
I often ponder if he writes the jokes into his script or if he just comes to that point in the script and throws it out there.
More than normal dry humor I noticed. Always welcome right?

I didn’t known Michael Scot practiced necromancy. No wonder Toby was so miserable at Dunder Mifflin. Michael must’ve cursed that guy a dozen times.
