Evil in Early Kabbalah - Emanations of the Left Hand Side - Origins of the Qliphoth / Klippot

  • The origin, nature and final destiny of Evil is one of the central concerns for theologians, philosophers and mystics. Developments in early Kabbalah (c. 13th. century) made for a dramatic and daring re-conception of Evil as beginning within the dynamism of the divinity itself. This episode explores one of the earliest texts about this new Kabbalistic theory of Evil, the Treatise on the Emanations of the Left or Ma'amar Ha-Atzilut Ha-Sma'lit. This difficult and obscure texts details the origins of Evil, Demons and their final destiny as understood in one of the earliest strata of Kabbalah and serves as the foundation for the later development of the Klippot in later Lurianic Kabbalah.

@ESOTERICA For whatever it's worth, all of those Liliths made me think of all the Sophias in the Valentinian "Tripartite Tractate". Guess I'll have to go back to it for some old school comparing and contrasting. I think my first comparison is that both texts are incomprehensible!

Heres a proposition on the levaithan served to the righteous part... if it starts the book on his thoughts about the origins of evil, maybe the last soap opra as you call it is a reinforcing metaphore of the idea that evil is a part of the divine, it being served back to the beings that confronted it , only to eat it and repeat the cycle of the origins of evil(cause without it there is no concept of divine)? Kind of a mess if its what the author proposed

The Merovingian in the Matrix movies mentions that the 1st and 2nd Matrix were also like this. I'm curious about how this specific idea might have made it to the Wachowski siblings when writing The Matrix.

They were steeped heavily in this knowledge. Even watching the new installment, I see another level of its understanding being tapped into; Neo has awoken and been reassimilated back into the Matrix and we see him as a creator of worlds, his VR game world is showing us that Neo reawoke and began to dream the dream of worlds again. This, at least to me, represents the likeness of each level of awareness and the repeating hierarchy of knowledge and experience after the reaching of a new dimension of awareness. The original trilogy seems to follow Neo up from Malkuth, we see him ascend to a godlike state, only to give himself and reawaken after his fusing with Smith, into a similar world with similar struggles where he must once again awaken with his even greater understanding afterwards. Fractal re-emergence time and time again. Sorry if this comment is disjointed, I'm typing as I eat lunch before getting back to work. Lol

I always appreciate learning how different cultures and religions viewed the ancients. (I know little of my grandfather's Jewish heritage.)
People tend to fear what they don't understand. Mankind has repeatedly villianized the beliefs of the ancients. Instead of learning lessons from the mistakes of individuals, historians tend to blame the entire practice or tribe. Historians tend to focus on the sin/evil, instead of the overall values and principles reinforced in the stories. Modern interpretations also are often heavily influenced by modern cultures and belief systems.
Most indigenous populations understand that we all possess both a left and right hand. It is up to the individual to find balance for the greater good. When people use their powers for personal gain or to harm others, their practice will turn against them. This is the price for abusing power. At least that is how I understand it.

There's an astounding similarity with Mexico's Aztec religion, known for practicing human sacrifice and abusive governing on a huge scale 500 years ago. The Aztecs' chief god was Huitzilopochtli, a literal translation of which is The Left-Handed Hummingbird. Also, the Aztecs were known as followers of the Left-Hand Path, meaning practitioners of evil. It is unknown if this charge was made up by the conquering Spaniards, or if it was the actual truth.

The part about the demonic spheres of the Screen is quite striking and I'm reminded of the Gospel of Phillip, when he speaks about how in this world there is no true evil or good but in the Middle, between here and the Resurrection, is where true evil lies.
As for the passage of Lilith upsetting the divine throne, it may be (I'm blindly speculating, since I have no academic background or expertise) that Lilith here is a generic term for "divine/demonic female" (hence the multiple liliths) and could be specifically referring to Asherah or another feminine divine counterpart (such as the Gnostic Sophia or the Mandean Ruha) who generates imbalance by creating unwanted offspring (much like the generation of Yaldabaoth).
I mean, think of all the money that God is going to have to spend on child support. I'd be shook too.

In my own studies, I was exploring the patterns and cycles of conflict, separation, fall and exile in relation to the dynamic Kabbalistic model. At first I expected that this would clearly be expressed within the vertical proximity only, (as the familiar binary above/below axiom) The appearance of seemingly new properties and characteristics in the lower
realms of action surprised me. And I didn't fully understand the left and right relationships of the model. I was envisioning
the En Soph as facing away so that my own left and right corresponded with it. As you had said, I expected evil to appear as the by-product of an absence or dissipation found in the
sub-lunar realms. But in fact, when I looked more closely at the occurence of
the 'Fall', there is also an 'accumulative' pattern going on; With each new repeated separation or interval of trespass, the conditions that result always bear the weight of a new precedent Law. For example, eating of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil resulted in Death as a new inexorable Law, and also the very act of eating becomes a necessity of survival in a world of ravenous feeding rather than the sensual participation and spiritual nourishment within a garden. The lunar aspect of Day Six has come into play fully now, the highly charged genital areas of both Adam and Eve are felt as a palpable binary push and pull that is the direct
result of consuming what was clearly a very binary fruit that contained all opposites within itself. The 'seeds' of such a fruit seem to carry the code of separation via the subsequent curse of enmity between the offspring of Eve and the Serpent. This is just one example of the accumulative, increased complexity and the additional burden of inexorable law that plagues the 'fallen' in their subsequent condition. So the code of VIOLATION, SEPARATION and RECIPROCAL DEVOURING appears like a new mutated pathogen and will continue fo manifest as evil through the impulse of Cane and his offspring. The Kabbalah shows us that the code of evil is inextricably identified with the Fall, descending further away from First Cause and deeper into Time under the
weight of greater and greater numbers of Laws.

"Evil is everything that fails to be" gives a whole different perspective to "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". This might be the reason why a fair bit of philosophers paint many demonic figures as sympathetic to mankind's struggles. To be one with God or to detach yourself completely in order to become your Own, that is the question.

I think a lot of these concepts are universal and developed further by shared influence. Hinduism and Zoroastrianism had a major influence on world religion, they also had disagreements on which entities or manifestations were considered good or evil. Disagreements are just fine, yet sadly with the current human condition, disagreements on theological issues often leads to violent conflict.

When you speak of these "other worlds" it reminds me of a story i heard from apocryphal writings about Satan deceiving Adam by appearing beautiful and telling him that there is another garden besides Eden that is just as good and that he will lead them there. It was a lie but good lies are based on truth. Another story i heard spoke in terms of God "deciding" on earth to bring Adam to, implying that there were several worlds to choose from. Interesting notion that there could be surviving remains of aborted universes populated by aborted angels And that there might be access or communication to these places. Like the game "Doom" but in real life lol.

Not to stir any pots, but I'm fascinated by how, "secular thinkers" we'll call them, can sit idle and call Spiritual theorists unintelligent and gullible. This subject broaches the very mind itself. Beyond the scope of our senses. Human kind has spent thousands of years speculating on it. And a materialist thinks he can dispense it all with a statement like "I can't put my senses to it, so it's not real"? Malarkey.

The TRUTH is despicable about those who master the occult Cabala, I have seen it in the Spirit Realm and I can not put my eyes on it, it is more evil then you can understand evil.
