    This is my thing with F1C.. Is old, dated, have their issues but is always fun and enjoyable to give a try without much compromise.
    And the race is exactly how you would expect; Cars broke in small packs and them in few laps everyone starts to run in their own pace, with different pit strategy and everything else. Lacks SC rules, but knowing how this work on newer games, maybe was a good thing..
    Sounds stupid but we don't have this anymore, for whatever reason in pretty much any sim nowaday, everyone run in pack racing, don't matter if is a WEC mod, will be pack Fucking racing. rFactor is the king of the pack racing everywhere, anytime. I really don't know how ISI fucked so much the AI from this game to rFactor, this still bogles me.
    But yes, no lateral grip, if you brake with the car a little sideways you will spin and the game contains mechanical failures, actually you can enable it to be season realistic what is cool.
    I don't know if I'm just becoming a shitty old guy but I miss a bit those times, I still remember how this game made my think: "owww just imagine a game like this 20 years from now"...
    Oh yes...

      Perfectly put, although IIRC the 'knife-edge' handling was an attempt to accurately capture the behaviour of grooved tyres.

      Rfactor can be upgrade and get more realism but idk get to the level of f1 99 02. But f1 99 02 and gp4 have the better AI for me.

    Great video! With regards to your comment about the great UI, it's a modded version. The original was bright white with black symbols and it had a slightly different layout. I believe the carbon fibre UI is from RH2004 or 2005

    This will forever be my favourite F1 game. So fun to go through all the seasons still today!
    I also forgot to mention that you can turn this into a far more "realistic" and fun sim from a competitive point of view with some extensive work in the car files, driver files, track AIW files etc. I've spent 7-8 years editing it hard to finally get it in a good place for my "career mode".

    This is the game that got me started in sim racing at around 2008. Found it on TH-cam randomly and saw that there were current F1 mods available for it, which was awesome as there was no official f1 game. Think the mod I played was a weird convert of the rFactor F1 2008 RFT mod, but I had an awesome time, even on a pad. From there I found and went to rFactor pretty quickly, but I still hold F1C close to my heart.
    Just last year I set it up on my 49 inch UW, SC2, HE Pros and after some fiddling it worked a charm. Even made a Schumacher tribute with it after watching the documentary. Ohhhh the Nostalgia....

    A few things: I do think there's a very limited form of dirty air. I've had some understeer when following cars every now and then. Could just be me taking the lines wrong, and if it's there it is definitely not terrible like IRL.
    In the default game, it was pretty much impossible to have a mechanical failure. The engine was nigh indestructible for both humans and AI. You'd have to f up engine cooling for a blow up to happen. And there's different types of engine blow ups too. Brakes, they are easier to lose. Canada and Italy are the 2 tracks in the default game where a brake disc would pop even with the highest brake cooling setting, so lift and coast (not that effective for saving fuel) becomes very useful.
    As for the AI, they are perfectly fine on their own. In traffic, they are very conservative in terms of overtakes. On the main straights they tend to try to pass, then inmediatly seem to get a snap of oversteer and retreat into the slipstream again. On corners they are better, but the bread and butter slipstream pass ... Usually no.
    And finally, there were few reasons to use the hard tire back then. The soft would last the whole race most of the time, so a soft 1 stops for ... almost all tracks worked. There were some tracks that required the hard to prevent overheating the tires. It was that way back then too, Bridgestone/Michelin made some tough tires.

    F1C is great, I spent a lot of time some six or seven years ago doing skins and mods for myself. I love this game!

  • @OdoruCuriosidades
    @OdoruCuriosidades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Nowadays F1C's only saving grace relies on the time spent in modding; in F1C, you can make cars and tracks very quickly, and almost everything can be converted to F1C and then polygon-reduced. Of course, modding doesn't concern to people who just want to play, so F1C falls easily forgotten compared to other classic sims. As an F1C enthusiast, this sim is to me some sort of "Jack of all trades, master of none". Or the "Good, but not great". Didn't aged well but still a good videogame on its own... but there are more better options out there, of course. As a sim, I honestly believe F1C is a good point to start with, albeit GTR2 gets the upper hand here. Aaaaaah, always good but not great, and most of the time second to something.
    I am currently making a functional mod with 1983-2022 seasons race by race, including using correct track variants with the sponsors on each circuit from its era. Of course, I am not alone in this. Imagine GP1979 for rFactor without the physics race by race and without the manual, but with most of its features applied to those 40 seasons; in this game that can be done in 3-4 years in hands of a group of talented modders. Time capsule is a proper way of describing F1C, especially if I achieve something like that project I'm in; it would be completely impossible in any other sim-racing videogame out there.
    I enjoyed a lot the video. Thank you Austin!

    I've installed this game a few years ago to have a go on the different layouts present there. It's a nice touch because Hokenheim is represented in both the old and superfast layout and the new one. The first corner of Monza was also changed durint that timespan. And I think a bunch of other things as well.
    Sadly I found it very very difficult to drive. I thought maybe it was only me, but the rear end refuses to grip properly. After watching this though I really feel like giving it another go.
    Regarding old F1 sims, do make sure to check out Grand Prix 4 as well, if you can get your wheel working OK with it. It drives a little more naturally (though it sure has its quirks), runs great and has a pretty good weather simulation for the time. Heck, when it starts to rain you can see small droplets on the tarmac and it even has a drying line. Plus the AI is pretty well made and technical failures are pretty realistic (albeit a bit frustrating when after 30 minutes of racing the gearbox just gives in).

    Ah, yes, the infamous 1.0.0 version of GPL was infamous for bottoming out and tyre issues: story goes that Arnao himself got in charge of fixing the issue and he was furious about it ever happening at all and forced all devs to actually study how real bias-ply tyres worked. This led to the 1.0.1 patch that corrected a lot of the issues, and work got done until the last patch ever released (1.2.2 I believe it was…). Then the last side-grip issues got fixed by the folks over at the SRMZ forums, after years of probing and picking on memory addresses since the source code is unavailable thanks to iRacing’s utter retardation.

    • @jasonmoyer
      @jasonmoyer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did it really take that long to identify the low-speed grip issues in GPL? I know GPL67x or whatever didn't come out for a long time, but I'm pretty sure those issues were identified and fixed in the GPL65 mod which was like 20 years ago now.

    • @gabem.5242
      @gabem.5242 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonmoyer It depends on how you do look at it: for mods? You’re correct. For the original ‘67 package? It needed the unofficial 1.3 patch by the SRMZ forum modders, which was released in ‘15 as far as I remember.

    To me, it doesn't matter as much if modern games are good or not. These old games aren't lost as soon as the new ones come out, and we can still enjoy them for years to come. While it would be nice to have games eclipse the old ones, it's not the end of the world if they don't. But that's just my thoughts.

    The V8 Supercars mod for F1C and NR2002/2003 had driveable slip angles before GTR2 did. It's weird in retrospect how not-fun the cars in F1C were to drive considering Arnao did the physics for it. It also had terrible multiplayer and a singleplayer experience that was way shittier than GP4, so it ended up being a hotlapping sim that wasn't really fun to hotlap in.

    Some of the realism problems of the game can be resolved with a bit of coding. I have worked on getting more realistic AI cars performance and reliability, having obtained pretty good results so far. Made a small Excel macro which can alter the GDB, RCD and INI files for track, drivers and cars, which has to be used before starting up the game and configured for a certain season, but it works well. There are mechanical failures, which happen according to real data (for example, 1999 BAR had terrible reliability, and that translates to the game with the INI file), custom-made dynamic weather and the cars and drivers perform closer to real data. I'm not longer quite active with simracing, but I have run this program for my F1 Challenge videos (in Spanish) and racing has been quite realistic in terms of AI performance.

    I would argue the AI has always been weak in the ISI games, but I think that has some to do with the waypoint model. GTA V has some of the same 'AI driving into objects' issues that this game has, but has the same waypoint AI model. It's a flaw of the design that no one has really improved upon, in twenty plus years.

    I must have been a weird kid. I've been driving sims as long as i remember. Born in 98 and been driving gpl and f1c from at least 4 years old. Throw in some live for speed, rbr and then the first rfactor. Later i bought ac pre release in 2014 and it felt so awesome with g27 wheel. Before g27 i drove everything with a microsoft sidewinder ffb wheel. I think all of that have made a totally anal purist and elitist😁 i get bored with gt3 sims left and right, i love to just hotlap and tame some crazy historic f1 and such. I was such a gpl fanboy as a kid with my dad, that he built me a 2 speed 50cc go-kart with a "replica" gurney eagle body and took me to local karting circuit to just lap around with. Sadly life got in the way and it was a short lived period, but thank god there's sim racing after all. My only regret is that when my g27's table clamps broke and i had to upgrade, i just ordered a g29. Partly because i wanted to use my still working g27 shifter, but i should have upgraded to a belt driven wheel then. Just some late night rambling.
    Edit. Forgot about ams1, it really surprised me and takes the cake from ac slightly. The driving makes just a bit more sense. Ams2 on the other hand feels like a step backwards from that, there's the elitism speaking again. Out of the old sims, i feel like lfs has aged the best.

    The strangest thing to me about playing these older games (even PS2 ones) is how shockingly similar they look to current titles. ACC took a step forward, but AC looked almost exactly like this, with *slightly* higher res textures and a bit more car geometry, but the shitty low-poly hands look about the same. iRacing still looks shit, Rfactor looks shit, R3E looks not great, but arguably the best. Hell, even PC1 and 2 look kind of shit, and now I have a 3070ti to run it at max and those games blew away the competitors.
    But then if you go and say Forza 4 even looks better than most current titles people flip their shit and race to call you blind because low poly geometry, basic as shit lighting, and blurry textures is clearly the peak of graphics. It's like these people have no clue what's happening in the games market outside of racing sims.
