ONI discovered that humans used to exist in a way more advanced setting HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of years ago, and were genocided and set back to what they always thought was the first "stone age"... Osman is also a spartan II dropout who was almost killed by the augmentations. As Fred said it "They managed to stitch her back together. ONI never lets anything go to waste". She has been with only since she was 4-6 years old, she has been groomed to become the next head of ONI since she was a teenager. You can't really be mad at her when all she has known in her life is that her destiny to protect humanity that she trained for for years almost killed her (she saw this as letting her team down), and what ONI was willing to do to keep humanity from going extinct.
true however that was also before Parangosky weeded out all the bad eggs in the research division like Halsey, whom she disagreed with about the procedures used in the Spartan II program like the flash clones. I do however agree that the history of ONI is f*cked up but I think post-war ONI under the command of Osman isn't as gruesome and immoral -however, this may be disproven depending on wether or not the Argent moon Asteroidia experiment occured during Parangosky's reign or under Osman's supervision.

Oni's experiments on humans and the Flood i s stupid and will eventually backfire on them. Doesn't every human that gets experimented with the Flood help the Flood? If they get infected even if its 'controlled doesn't there memories get 'downloaded' into the Flood mind? Also what Oni is doing regarding the Flood seems what was done to ancient humans in the Palace of Pain.

I love the creepy, disturbing nature of ONI, and these videos are great for introducing new players to the big moral grey of Halo- how the people you fight for aren't even "the good guys", and in some respects are even worse than the covenant.

They infected him, and he knew about earth, and there was a gravemind in halo 2. and don't gravemind's have memory from past graveminds? even though the halo 1 gravemind came after, but still. do you think thats the reason why? When they infected Captain keys, they found out about earth, so the gravemind in halo 2 also, now known this, so in halo 3, he i guess attempts to take it over? That was all on Kurt, he snuck it in as something else and used it on his Gammas because losing TWO well trained companies of Spartans really got to him, and he began to search for something that would give them a fighting edge.
Having spent the past year or so learning the lore of Warhammer 40k, I think I can see a potential source of inspiration for ONI. The type of wacky shenanigans they get up to are exactly the sort of thing that the Inquisition (specifically the Ordo Xenos branch of the Inquisition) love to do for funsies.
This gave me an idea for a game. An ONI member becomes a spartan V, a new spartan stage that is classified and sent to assassinate chief, Locke, and any other target of ONI. When the job is done they would kill this specific spartan, but he goes rogue and seeks to destroy ONI's high superiors.
Been viewing your videos and as a former Halo player of its games, this and the first video on Oni just intrigued me into more of your content. If you can make this into a series, I would appreciate it. What a disturbing group..
The thing about the Asteroidia, it's explained in book Retribution that the AI that was recovered from Gao was largely responsible for the development of the bioweapon by first coercing a scientist that the thing he was creating would be for the good of mankind and then, when the project is shutdown by ONI themselves, making fake documents saying that the research would continue. The sad thing is, I'm pretty sure ONI would have revisited the project on their own at some point.

I doubt that asteroidia was envisioned as something to use against the Elites. Artificially extending the civil war between the Swords of Sanhelios and various covenant remnants was doing the job of keeping the Elites weak and fractured. I think asteroidia was meant as something to use either in case one of the covenant remnant factions won the civil war and began gathering strength vs humanity, or it was for use against other potential factions (like The Banished, who ONI certainly knew about, or maybe a potential pirate or expansionist faction of Brutes or Jackals.
Something I don't understand about the Halo lore is that people say the Spartans you play as in Halo Reach are Spartan III's. But Spartan III's didn't come around till years later.

love the vid, but I have 1 caveat to make. Number 3's Gamma company alterations wasn't actually an ONI idea. Kurt secretly implemented the main drug for the aggression enhancement as well as 2 drugs to reduce the effects. He did this under his own authority and when the AI (Endless Winter i think his name is) sent Kurt a slipspace probe detailing it, he had it destroyed as well as all of the AI's records purged to make way for the next AI. After that, he said he'd try to convince Ackerson(and in a way, ONI) to go along with it. All this is from Ghosts of Onyx
It would be really neat to find out more lore on the developement to what happened to the ship Solemn Penance and its commander, Rhul 'Salmutee post-Halo 2!

Artificially extending the civil war between the Swords of Sanhelios and various covenant remnants was doing the job of keeping the Elites weak and fractured. I think asteroidia was meant as something to use either in case one of the covenant remnant factions won the civil war and began gathering strength vs humanity, or it was for use against other potential factions (like The Banished, who ONI certainly knew about, or maybe a potential pirate or expansionist faction of Brutes or Jackals.
Something I don't understand about the Halo lore is that people say the Spartans you play as in Halo Reach are Spartan III's. But Spartan III's didn't come around till years later.

love the vid, but I have 1 caveat to make. Number 3's Gamma company alterations wasn't actually an ONI idea. Kurt secretly implemented the main drug for the aggression enhancement as well as 2 drugs to reduce the effects. He did this under his own authority and when the AI (Endless Winter i think his name is) sent Kurt a slipspace probe detailing it, he had it destroyed as well as all of the AI's records purged to make way for the next AI. After that, he said he'd try to convince Ackerson(and in a way, ONI) to go along with it.
