Totally, still love this game when it released in 2002 and still to this day, so upset that when the 3DS was launched Rareware said they were going to bring this game back ! Would have been amazing having Starfox Adventures on the go ! Hopefully see this game on the Switch or it successor !
The atmosphere in this game is immaculate. The feel you get when walking around with the music, especially walking by lightfoot village. The day and night cycle, and just how connected the world is, it makes it all feel like a real place. I loved this game so much.
This has always been my favorite Star Fox game. I love the atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, and yes, I like the foxy blue vixen. I just wish they did more with her; I don't mind her being a damsel-in-distress to rescue, but I'd rather rescue her earlier in the game so she and Fox can work together to save Dinosaur Planet. Give them more time to interact and bond with each other. I hope Star Fox Adventures comes back on Switch, and I'd love to see a proper sequel to it, perhaps one that takes the Star Fox team to different planets, lets you explore them on foot, and lets you interact with the inhabitants of that planet. I believe that is the future of the Star Fox series.
The Nintendo 64 version funny enough Krystal had her own entire adventure you could play from start to finish, just for whatever reason Miyamoto and his crew rather did the opposite and i had no idea why, maybe it could've been time constraint issues to port over everything and have the story connect with starfox during her journey cuz outside of tricky there was another AI partner you could've had that tags along with krystal so yeah... a TON of the game and more areas to explore was completely stripped out.
@@MrDmoney156 my theory is when they updated all the graphics, particularly the textures, they just didnt have the space to cram in the areas Krystal would've explored, of which there are many and theyre quite neat, i got a ways in on the patched rom. Gamecube discs were pretty low on space so since the focus is explicitly starfox thats probably the sacrifice they decided to make.
The design of the Arwing and Great Fox in this game was always my favorite by far. They look straight out of Star Wars, gritty and used. Andross' design also legitimately made my heart drop as a kid. Those eyes were terrifying.
I like it okay. I’m in the camp who wished it was Dinosaur Planet as its own IP. Helps that the prototype looks like it gets to the action faster. The opening of Starfox Adventures feels slow, mainly due to “Do you know how to pick up and throw things? Yes? Well here’s a whole series of mind numbingly basic puzzles around it. With no staff or ground enemies yet to fight with.”
I would have loved to see the original get a proper release. Played the rom which is what I show in the video and aside from some framerate issues it plays well.
Oh, yes. And the nighttime version perfectly conveys that feeling of falling asleep in the jungle. Makes me picture Fox, Krystal, and Tricky making camp for the night.
Really great memories with this one. Exploring Dinosaur planet, figuring out the puzzles. This was still during the time where you would rent games and where you would play single players experiences side by side with friends. The Andross twist at the end actually surprised me at the end I remember for some reason but I was disappointed no actual fight with "GENERAL SCALES!!"
Yeah this! I remember getting this game at Walmart when I was a kid and seeing the poster as I walked in and thinking how awesome it looked. I was sold the second I saw Fox and dinosaurs
My only complaints is that I was quite disappointed that I couldn’t fight Gen Scales and once again to defeat Andross. The final fight was a little lackluster but a small nitpick against a game I loved. I also remember being amazed by the way of how they captured fur for the GC. The music was incredible. Each track reflected the environment perfectly. Thorntail Hollow day/night, cape claw, ocean force point temple, ancient well are among my favorites
I lived in this world as a kid. I remember rushing to my gamecube after school to play ball with tricky, or walking around in the sharpclaw costume pretending to be one of the bad guys! This was one of the first games i(eventually) managed to beat all by myself too This game will always hold a place in my heart
I love this game SO MUCH. I was a dinosaur kid with no starfox experience whatsoever. When one of my friends introduced me to a 'real' starfox game, i didn't really care. Now i see the charm better, but back then i just wanted to get involved in saving the lylat system from blowing up!
Finally someone who it´s not a megalomaniac fan of Starfox 64, someone who loves this awesome SPIN OFF from the Starfox series for what it is: a great and different take on the series BECAUSE IS AN ACTION GAME NOT A SHOOTER ON THE RAILS, the last classic from Rare in a Nintendo home console....I don´t even comprehend why are we always fighting to defend this great title, holy cow the Starfox fandom is one of the most toxic and inmature of all of gaming ... so i would love to see more StarFox fans like this guy, i know i know, you all loved Starfox 64 to death (i love it too) but there are other awesome games from this series, on the Game Cube are this awesome Rare adventure and the Namco´s StarFox Assault, not as good but a great shooter too, in the Nintendo DS we have Command, it controls a little too much DSish ....but it has strategy vibes and it is good too, and finally in the Wii U you have Platinum´s StarFox Zero, another good shooter on the rails, please this series is much much more than StarFox 64....wait, this same guy has a video defending Donkey Kon 64??!! holy bananas you are my new TH-cam hero!!
I first played through this game in my early twenties over a decade ago and I loved it! The Star Fox universe really lends itself to being an epic adventure. I feel that the quality visuals and soundtrack helped to make it quite immersive and I actually find it to be more enjoyable than some Zelda games. The test of strength mini game was a big problem for me as I have never been great with tapping A fast enough to win. I had to get a family member who was amazing at the Mario Party mini games where you tap A to beat that part for me. If I play though the game again, I will make sure to get a turbo controller just for that part lol
As a huge Star Fox fan, I've always loved this game, sure I was skeptical back when it first came out, but when I actually tried and played the game, I fell in love with it
This is a game I still have to repeat, just finished it once as a child. My reactions back then were so-so: it felt a little like Star fox, and like Zelda, but not as good as each of them. I am still happy that it exists, but I think the better scenario would have been if dinosaur planet would have been a separate game and we would have got a more fleshed out star fox assault...
Test of Fear Kazoa Test, I see this as an early teaching of how NOT to be distracted in order to win. If you are distracted by what is going on screen, you fail. Perhaps a Minigame in Thorntail Hollow could have been used to prepare gamers for that Kazoa test. In fact, Thorntail Hollow could have used a few minigame shops to give gamers a practice for what they might need later on when they go for the Kazoa tests, that could have given gamers time to get used to the mini game mechanics before really pushing them in the story segments.
The Dinosaur Planet beta dumped a year ago feels like yesterday and still fresh and jaw dropping as Starfox Adventures. Its worth a dive now especially with the restoration team patching and making more stable from crashing if anyones first playthrough got too clunky. Theres artifacts including walled City shadowhunters that we see only in Adventures Test of Fear Rare nailed the atmosphere and mystery even as Starfox Adventures. That kind of exploration across lands is still Starfox-like in its theme kf travel so its warmed up on me more the last few months. Minus stuck mashing A at Lightfoot, i vividly recall grinding fuel cells told i need them, but didnt need them choosing next area anyway.
Someone actually did a good video going into better details about Starfox Adventures issues, especially with how General Scales is built up as a very imposing antagonist and then not using him, the combat system not allowing you to switch enemy targets, acting as a gimped version of Z-targeting and every combo dealing the same amount of damage, the attack animation flourish is just for show but slows the gameplay down too much. You’re better off not engaging with most fights in the game if they aren’t mandatory and that’s mainly the fights in the overworld. The abilities of the Staff are implemented and streamlined, but at most, their uses in and out of combat are at best, negligible, very clunky, and don’t change combat much. The fact there’s no fast travel in a game that forces you backtrack through an overworld that is mostly linear can become tedious and it doesn’t help that the Warp Stone, which is in it’s name, doesn’t warp you to where you’ll need to go. Enemies also aren’t a threat and never keep up with you, the T-Rexes do the same amount of damage that the first enemies you fight in your first combat scenario and that’s practically every enemy in the game. If those issues were addressed, then it’d help, but it’s not helping the game when General Scales is done the most disservice overall in the game while Krystal is also put into the DiD role, cause Andross’ appearance at the end isn’t a very well done twist, it’s very jarring. Here’s the video if anyone is curious: th-cam.com/video/Q79l5MDYBPA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=n-Avlmx37ueCzHg2
I admit that StarFox adventures is my comfort game, it has its dull parts yes, however it’s always given me that warm feeling. Wish I could play it again, but my GameCube and Wii stopped working years ago
I liked this game so much, I wrote a highschool assignment in Saurian because I didn't want anyone to read it. It was supposed to be a letter to ourselves that the teacher would mail to us in X years. I never got it back, so I have no idea what i wrote. Teacher didn't think I'd be able to translate it, but I can because internet. Was probably cringy, so perhaps it's best
The atmosphere and the environments are so good that even in the previous unreleased N64 version, they still looked amazing. I think the hate for it really only started to appear when StarFox Command came out and people blamed Adventures for basically starting "canon StarFox fan fiction." Like Jet Force Gemini, I think it has sort of a Saturday Morning Cartoon-esque vibe and approach to it which make some people hard to say they enjoy it as adults, people are just overly critical and negative of anything that seems remotely childish or light.
For someone like myself who grew up on Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on the N64. Especially after coming off from the high difficulty spike that was Majora's Water Dungeon, the easy nature of StarFox Adventures is perhaps what I could call a Beginner's Zelda. However that button mashing minigame against the Strong Lightfoot tribe member is hell and can ruin your GameCube controller if you are playing with a 3rd Party controller.
If i remember correctly about that minigame it's even you don't have to mash, only hold A. I discover by accident during sometime I played around 2010-15.
I freaking love this game!! It will always be my favorite GameCube game! I didn’t care if it did play like a Zelda game, I was glad I got to play a Starfox game with Fox on land.
Such a good dungeon game. Graphics, soundtracks, dinosaurs! I’ve had this game since early 2000’s and still do. I’m planning on a replay this summer and it’s always great. For strong foot, use a spoon and rub it really fast over the A button and he’ll be down in an instant. I believe with slightly updated graphics, dinosaur models and some gameplay, storytelling adjustment. A remake with these additions would be awesome!
Tapping with your index finger can also work. Over the years, I've discovered the index can tap a lot faster than the thumb can. The trick lies in moving your wrist more than your finger; you want to create this sort of vibration where your finger presses and depresses the button in rapid fashion.
I agree, they should have kept the split gameplay. Make the Sharpclaws a group of space pirates and have General Scales gather the remnants of Andross' army after his defeat in 64. He uses that army to invade Dinosaur planet and take over Krazoa palace, using the ancient energy from the planet's core to power up and shield a space cannon/spaceship with which he could take over the entire Lylat system. Then, like you said, the Fox gameplay would revolve around fighting the Sharpclaws in space in his arwing and the Krystal gameplay would take place on the planet, collecting the spellstones and spirits to put back the seal on the planet's core and cut off the power supply to the Sharpclaws base's shield. Then put some lore around either the Kamerian dragons or the Krazoa god tricking Scales and Krystal in order to obtain the planet's energy to revive themselves and boom, you have the best of both worlds between the classic Starfox experience and a Zelda like adventure/puzzle game.
I think in was like 13 when i played SFA on the GC. I was a big StarFox Fan (i still am, look at my profilpic xD) my friends and i always roleplayed to be StarFox Characters, going on missions etc. I loved SFA so much. Didnt mind it was a diffrent setting. I played SF64 and StarFox on the SNES. But seeing my favourite Characters on a real Adventure was huge for me. I had no struggles with those MiniGames at all. I mean i was already almost a teenager but i think if i was younger it wouldnt be that bad. I beat StarFox SNES with 6 so.. yeah.. I agree with the issues you mentioned. As an adult, it sticks out even more. But the biggest issues i had as a teenager was that the other teammates haden't to do much. I only know the game from its cover. And for me it suggested that the other Characters had their own gameplay mechanics etc. And i was really upset thet Falco was nowhere to be seen untill the very End. And speaking of the End. I didnt like it that there was no Endgame at all. I mean you could only replay the last boss and thats it. But yes. Today, i still think that StarFox Adventures was and is a great game. It had his issues but still was a great Adventure game. I just hope we see StarFox return someday. To bad what happend to it after that mature Zero failure. StarLink showed in which direction a StarFox game could go today and that Fans still want it to return.
One thing that's always perplexed me is the muted consensus around this game when taken in comparison to Beyond Good & Evil, which is remembered much more fondly despite having MANY similarities to SFA. Near identical mechanics, gameplay, & "dungeon" design; staff-based combat with a long-range projectile move used primarily for puzzle solving instead of combat; partner system; vehicle segments; somewhat short and fairly linear… My only complaint about SFA is one that has to do with the Star Fox license being shoehorned on, but it's not the licence itself. It's apparent now that we have prototypes from various stages of development that the integrating of Star Fox characters happened much earlier than we used to think, and coincided with content & feature lock-it seems like as soon as they started working on turning Dinosaur Planet into a Star Fox game, all serious work on features and content froze and the game was especially treated as content-complete where it was, to get it out the door. Without the Star Fox move I wonder what additional stages, environments, and mechanics we could've gotten.
I actually prefer SFA to BG&E due mainly to the absence of those excruciating stealth sections that found themselves shoehorned into BG&E and Zelda: Wind Waker in the wake of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell's success.
Star Fox Adventures is a good game on an objective level. When I still had access to this game, I played it quite a lot and enjoyed it. It's basically a Zelda game with Star Fox characters, and while that sounds weird, the game works well with what it set out to do. I love the dinosaur interactions, I love the world, the music, and the graphics, and I really do love a lot of the setpieces in this game barring the entire lightfoot/test of fear BS which is more annoying than it is anything else. But that's exactly the issue, as well, Like I said, I don't hate this game, but when I wanted to play a brand new Star Fox game, I was not expecting that A: I would be basically playing a Zelda clone, B: The game wouldn't allow me to use Fox's Blaster, which is his trademark weapon on the ground, and C: That the final boss, despite it being a great callback to 64, came entirely out of left field. The reason why people remember Star Fox 64 as the best game in the series is because the game had a lot of white knuckle moments where you had to make split second decisions if you wanted to win or get the higher score. Blasting through Area 6 is still one of the most fond memories Star Fox fans (such as myself) have, alongside the quotable and meme-worthy dialogue that just isn't present in Adventures. While Adventures is a good Zelda clone, the problem is that it is a good Zelda clone with the Star Fox name on it. It's like if you were to make a COD-style shooter with Mario characters. Even if it plays well and is fun, it would feel completely mismatched with the rest of the content. I even remember that the reverse sort of happened with Link's Crossbow training, which was a third person sometimes on-rails shooter, and while it was fun, the game was treated as a Spin-off, and was meant to be seen as such. Adventures was meant to be the sequel to 64, yet it felt more like a spin-off in terms of tone and feel. Fox not having his blaster would be rectified in the following Star Fox game on the Gamecube, which did take a lot of notes from 64, Assault, but seeing how his blaster worked in Assault kind of made me glad that Fox didn't have it in Adventures on a gameplay level. For all the good Assault tried to do to rectify Star Fox, all it basically did was say "Yeah, this is it. It would have sucked in Adventures." The reason why I'm mentioning Assault here is because Adventures marked the downward trend in Star Fox games we are still seeing to this day. Even Zero, wich was the closest game in tone and feel to 64 was bogged down by an unintuitive control scheme, and even introduced a new vehicle which no one wanted to play as. Is it fair to blame Adventures for what happened to Star Fox as a series? No. But is is the start of the trend? Absolutely. Finally, Andross. I understand full well that Andross is the main and most iconic villain of the series, but this was General Scales' show from the beginning. Andross had zero build up and was shoehorned in for no reason whatsoever. Even in 64, they explain before you reach the start screen, or even before you do the first level of Corneria that Andross is the big bad. He's never seen during gameplay until the player reaches Area 6 or Venom 1, but his presence is everywhere. He has bases, labs, secret weapons, and generals throughout the Lylat system, and his forces are out to kill you, making it 100% clear that he is the big bad. It makes meeting him at Venom feel all the more real, because you literally were fighting a war against this guy across multiple planets. In Adventures? Right when you're supposed to finally take down Scales (and it was supposed to happen with the unused rendition of Area 6 from 64 playing as the boss theme), you can get one hit on the guy before Andross tells him to screw off. If Andross was going to come back, it should have happened in Assault with the Aparoids, and hell, Assault's first boss is a robotic Andross clone, so it would have served as a great tutorial or foreshadowing for the final boss. Again, the downward trend is showing here. Like I said, Adventures is a fine game on its own. It's well designed, and paced, has great graphics and music, and is still a great game to sit down and play despite its quirks and minor hiccups. But just because Adventures is a good game, that doesn't mean it's a good Star Fox game. It truly saddens me that we haven't seen a good Star Fox game since 64, and honestly? Nintendo would do better to remake Star Fox 2, because when I played that years after playing Adventures, Assault, and Zero (I never played Command, so I can't comment on it), I felt more like I did when I was playing 64 than any other game in the series. Liking Adventures isn't an issue. I like it. But I also know that this game isn't a Star Fox game, and it's truly saddening to see Star Fox as a series in this state.
8:42 I don't remember getting past this to be difficult. But the Krazoa shrine just after was too difficult. During my first playthrough as a child, I stopped there and didn't touch the game for many years since then.
i saw it as Zelda with Star Fox characters, and that was just fine by me lol. i loved assault too, but that game needed more campaign content. the multiplayer was very fun to play around in especially after you unlock the bonuses
I had high hopes for Assault, but I admit it was kind of disappointing after Adventures wowed me as much as it did back then. Adventures' credits theme made me excited for a sequel, and of course I love the sendoff with Krystal's theme establishing she's part of the team now, and getting together with Fox.
Yeah... I rarely used ice in attacking. Actually, I almost never used Staff or Tricky abilities unless the game was making me, even though the fuel for doing so was abundant, so I was probably being subtly yelled at by the game to do that more, and all I saw was that I could entirely stop collecting GrubTub around the time of Fox's first -- the game's second -- Krazoa Shrine if Tricky was stuffed and Fox was at capacity, and then get by on that for the rest of the game. Huh. When I tried to be that fast at the Lightfoot Test of Strength, I lost. My strategy was to let Musclefoot get a start, then start mashing as Fox approached the pit. It tended to work. I should say that, in my case, I was in my 20s when this game came out. Ohhh, the Test of Fear. It was, indeed, my stopping point for a while. My very first problem was that I didn't know how I was supposed to interact with the gauge. It looked exactly like the one from the thieves' punishment minigame, which had you press A to stop the needle within the green area but was otherwise okay going outside of it, but here, you used the Control Stick to try to mitigate the needle's movements so that it stays within the green area. Then it took me a while to acclimate myself to the distracting movie that played during it. It got to where I could kind of look at it a little bit and still get through, though. I guess, but failure always makes you go through the Shrine again. Which, in this case, keeps the Tests from being pointless, as most of them do no damage, so starting at the tests would be as good as a free pass that you just practice to use. If there's anything I'd change that you didn't mention, it would be that I'd make it so you could wake up any NPC who doesn't already wake up on your approach. Okay, so there's only one NPC that sleeps whose sleeping impedes your progress. But is there anyone who's played Star Fox Adventures a few times who hasn't run into that SnowHorn, gotten his two Alpine Roots, and still been unable to progress because he's asleep? Granted, you could burn some of that time collecting sleeping GrubTubs before they wake up, as well, and collect that Magic Meter upgrade. Still... I've seen a couple of amusing glitches or bugs or something back when I used to play it. The first is one I saw in the DarkIce Mines, on the surface, in one of those structures. It may have been the one with the campfire. That batlike enemy spawned into a wall. It couldn't fully spawn, and it couldn't despawn, so it just looped its light show. That only happened once. The second one was more repeatable. It was on Dragon Rock, where the EarthWalker is found. After freeing him, go to him and get the cutscene. Now, look at him... and pause to get the menu. The EarthWalker's tail will disappear. I don't know if this happens with any other NPC.
@@matthewbuckley7757 yeah I never been a big fan of the other Star Fox games tell me Star Fox adventures is better than all of the Star Fox games in my opinion
It is a neat game, sadly the feeling that it was unfinished grew with me. Since the gigaleak a few years ago, and the access to the original dinosaur planet I really grew to love the unfinished game. I have no problem that Fox and his gang got forced into the whole thing, yet I honestly believe that Sabre and his adoptive sister Crystal would have made a better team to explore this setting.
Personally, I'd bring them all together, including Fox and Saber. Being that Saber is a wolf, it'd be interesting if he developed a rivalry with Fox, echoing Fox's rivalry with a certain other Wolf. I even thought of an AU origin story that would have Star Fox meeting Krystal, Saber, and Randorn on a planet that serves as a hub of criminal activity, and agreeing to ferry them away from said planet. During the voyage, Fox and Krystal grow close to each other, which makes Saber envious. General Scales would appear as well, pursuing the Cerinians with his crew of SharpClaw and another Cerinian female named Kursed (yes, I would turn Kursed into a separate character from Krystal, though serving as her dark counterpart much as Wolf does for Fox).
As a fan of RARE back in the N64 days since DKC2 on the SNES rocked my gaming childhood and Killer Instinct was my Mortal Kombat of fighting games. I followed the progress of StarFox Adventures from when it was first unveiled as Dinosaur Planet at E3 in 2000 until it's eventually release in September 2002. I still defend the game to this day knowing that the developers at RARE put allot of work within the crunch time.
Seems to me that the number one description for this game is "missed potential." The Star Fox IP could have added so much more; the original IP (and elements such as the original villain) could have been better fleshed out. Combat could have been so much better, and cutscene/collection animation skipping could have significantly eased the general ergonomics of gameplay. It's like looking at a recipe for an incredible dish, handing it to the chef, and when he comes back with the completed dish, it's just... not quite right. All the ingredients are there, but the spice, the spirit of the recipe, is lacking somehow. I heard someone say once, "nobody really wants to make a bad game." Of course the team behind this one had big plans before the Star Fox dimension landed on their plate, and even so, they tried to make an experience intended to be unique, fun, and tap into nostalgia for fans of a pretty big franchise at the time. I admit that sometimes I give a little too much benefit of the doubt to folks who probably don't really deserve it, but this is one of those times where I feel pretty confident saying, they probably would have done better (gameplay, writing, etc.) if they could, but there's a fair chance time was of the essence. It takes time to retool a creative project into something different, especially something as fundamental as changing your protagonist(s) and adding a twist villain to show up the one you originally planned because they're simply a bigger figure in the gaming world.
Agreed. The big changes I would have made are: 1. Fox rescues Krystal a lot earlier in the game, and she joins up with him and Tricky in saving Dinosaur Planet. Fox and Krystal's dynamic is a bit bumpy early on, but the attraction is present and mutual, and by the end of the story, they've smoothed things out considerably. 2. Drakor would be the main villain as intended, with General Scales as his right-hand man. 3. We would have gotten proper matches with Scales and Drakor both. 4. Andross could show up as a secret true final boss, having perhaps been the one who modified Drakor, but he wouldn't steal Scales or Drakor's thunder outright. 5. I would probably try to work Saber and Randorn into the story as well, as fellow Cerinians alongside Krystal who are seeking a new home after the destruction of their home planet.
Even though it's not originally Star Fox, I love playing with this skin. Much better than with a franchise that would never have a continuation or appeal. If they even put Diddy and Dixie in this game instead, I would love it even though it has nothing to do with DK. People complain a lot about aesthetic things, it doesn't make any sense to me.
Good: Environments look fantastic. Krystal looks Fanfucintastic. (Love the sensual Jungle FoxGirl vibe) Superb atmospheric music. (Dark Ice Mines depths music is my fav, that booming start followed by a calming relaxed crescendo with moments of tense unease followed by determination to save everyone trapped inside the Dark Ice mines) Funny moments gave me a chuckle during my teenage years. (Fox's reaction to seeing Krystal was my fav, for obvious reasons) 3 of the 4 Dungeon/Planet Pieces Boss Fights were great. Memorable ending with Krystal joining the Star Fox team. Bad: (still defending the game but not blind to what RARE was going through that caused these issues) Didn't get enough development time to include Krystal's part of the story so they had to rush through to make the story focus on Fox after Krystal's brief tutorial arc. Dinosaur Language felt like it was a last minute idea that was dropped entirely during the 2nd quarter of the story. So many parts of original Dinosaur Planet lore was sacrificed just to include Star Fox lore. Microsoft buying RARE during early months of 2002 caused the crunch time and so many parts of the game left to be included were either rushed or dropped out from the game. (Watch E3 2002 video to see that StarFox Adventures was the ONLY game RARE was talking about, they knew it back then that RARE was being sold to Microsoft but had to keep a straight face to not cause too many rumors) General Scales Fight. Racing felt like it needed it's own minigame distraction to give players a chance to perfect for certain story events.
I liked the dinosaur language thing at the beginning. I thought it was funny. The Slippy translation thing was good too. I agree with all your points :)
@@jiggylookback Thanks, I kept on thinking of stuff to add on so I kept on editing until I realized you might have already replied. So my other comments I made as new comments afterwards instead of adding onto the original Good and Bad points. Overall 80 to 90 out of 100. Not perfect due to the situation at RARE we may not have understood about back in the day but since the NDAs have expired we got more information from individuals who were are RARE at the time that shed light into the Nintendo and Microsoft situation at RARE. So the game itself may have been praised at first, only to get sour in the short term when people were expecting a Star Fox game but didn't know about the original Dinosaur Planet build of the game. But after all the failures of AAA Gaming in recent years, StarFox Adventures has become better over time in retrospect and a good history lesson in how RARE managed the development of this game despite all the issues in the background that could have made it cancelled. You could tell that RARE really didn't want to make this another Miremare situation that happened back in their Ultimate years. Miremare was a ZX Spectrum game for the Sabreman series that was in development but never got finished due to Ultimate being sold to US Gold after RARE was formed so Stamper Bros could work on the NES and expand their newer company outside of the limited scope of UK/Europe. StarFox Adventures could have easily been cancelled if they missed a vital deadline or were bogged down with scope creep during development that they couldn't afford especially with Nintendo IP being the big issue of why they had to get this one finished before Microsoft announced to the press that they brought RARE the day after this game hit the market.
Amazing game! It still looks great too ! I really loved the idea of getting out of the arwing, exploring the many worlds this universe has to offer. Imagine how great that would have been.
The strength game used a full button press mechanic that when doing a full press quick enough is what would result in a win. The turbo button did a full press as well which made it an easy win. As a kid I just didn't have the strength to do the full press quick enough. Not the only game to take advantage of a full button press on GameCube or any other consoles. D2s jumping also changes based on a quick press and a full button press resulting in different base jumping heights
I did very much like SFA. It was one of the more graphically advanced games I had played at that point, and it was a pretty fun world to explore. I did hate Tricky... and besides that, I don't really remember a whole lot else about the game, so I guess it doesn't leave the strongest impression if you only play it once (unlike many other games I played once yet still remember fairly well). Anyway, would love to hear you talk about Starfox Assault too! Best title track ever.
I'm a big fan of this game. I think its only major flaws are where you can see they ran out of time. Revisiting the dungeons, the lack of a Scales fight, the three on-rails shooter sections in a row near the end, and some general lack of polish here and there. It feels like you finish the first half of the game and then suddenly it's over. Which makes sense, because the code suggests only about half of the intended content is actually present. For example, the maps database is roughly 50% blank entries. Several levels have events whose names imply they were intended for other, scrapped levels. Lots of scenes have animations defined for Krystal when she's not actually there (it just defaults to Fox instead). If they'd had more time, they probably could have finished things up properly and addressed most of the glaring issues. Of course, every Rare game had things scrapped for time, so, maybe they wouldn't have actually used that time wisely... Tricky can be annoying, but people forget that he's basically a dog. Not even a talking dog - you have a translator. He's not supposed to be a genius. (Also, it can happen that he asks WHERE ARE WE GOING? after a long cutscene explaining exactly where you're going, which is just hilarious)
Omg, I was literally listening to the soundtrack to this game while doing work earlier. This game has, by far, my all time favorite soundtrack to any game. It is phenomenal. The game itself is also good! I HATED the part in Dragon Rock where you had to free the dinosaur by shooting the targets in a time limit because the aiming sucks but other than that, great game!
Sadly, I never got this game when I was younger. I’ll definitely have to pick up a copy at some point or maybe Nintendo could just bring it to the switch at some point. I think the fact that Rare used LoZ as inspiration while making this game is cool in itself. Even though dinosaur planet would’ve been a cooler game as it would’ve been an original IP. This game isn’t bad just because of that reason alone. The music, world design, voice acting, etc is all really good. (Typical Rare stuff by this point.) not much else I can say as I’ve never play the game itself. Although I look forward to playing it someday. Great video as always man, keep it up!
Thank you once again, brother. I'd love to sit down and game with someone who appreciates games like yourself. I still can't understand how DK64 gets crapped on for having too many collectibles.. What kind of complaint is that. In 2000 that game was mind blowing. People don't appreciate passion. Star Fox Adventure really defines Gamecube for me.
I am in the camp of not liking this game. However, i love when games branch out and try new things. I love Zelda and Zelda -type games. To give credit where it's due, the game is definitely a showcase for graphics on the GameCube and it still holds up today. I also thought that the Arwing sections handled super well! When i tried to go through this game, it was the combat that killed it for me. It was such a major slog to get through every enemy because of it consisted of just mash the 'A' button. Hitting different directions does add flair, but it would have been nice if enemies were weak to certain types of attacks (staff thrusts or overhead swings and whatnot). I played the game in hopes of learning more of Star Fox lore but fighting enemies really knocked the wind out of my sails. Though i don't like the game, i like that it pushed the series forward. I would totally support a sequel or even a remake/rerelease in some form. I've been a fan of the series since the SNES. The Star Fox series deserves more attention! Thanks for the video! I enjoyed it 😁
I’m with you. I think personally the combat was its weakest point. After the first couple battles you’re just trying to get through enemies as quick as possible.
Love this game so much! I’m glad they did an adventure game for starfox. Was probably my favorite game alongside skies of Arcadia. Playing through it again this week. Probably my 10th full playthrough. The test of strength minigame and test of fear krazoa spirit never seem to get any easier haha 😂 But i think the game needs some hard aspects to it. If they can’t crank difficulty with the combat, it’s gotta get more difficult elsewhere. I think it’s an all around good game. I’ll always defend it
I always find it cool that Fox had a different adventure, because i'm not the biggest fan of normal StarFox gameplay since it reminds me of the Gummy Jet from Kingdom Hearts which i HATE! I never beat that game because i was too young iirc (6 years old), now i'm 27 and still have good thoughts about it. I should replay and end it one day! It also has a special moment in my brain, where i was playing it in the morning on the christmas days with cozy morning lights and my family around me. Many things happened since then but i still love the memories playing it.
I mean, the series' core gameplay isn't bad, but it's so _limiting._ Most of the sequels that tried to stick close to it, just ended up feeling like rehashes (though most did at least improve the experience in some way), and that's because there's only so much you can do with a jet or a tank compared to a living, breathing, sapient organism. Star Fox Adventures' world is interesting because you get to meet its inhabitants face-to-face and talk to them, and the SharpClaw are easily the most interesting antagonists the series has had for similar reasons. They have a vibe similar to the Kremling Crew, which fits seeing as Rare created both (heck, it'd be awesome if the SharpClaw returned as villains for the DKC series).
I like your idea of the Andross fight! All that's missing are Krystal in Star Fox-style levels, Star Fox-style bosses(Attack Carrier, Granga's Mech, Saucerer, Shogun Warlord, Star Wolf, etc.), other playable characters, (One-off levels with Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, Bill Grey, Katt Monroe, Miyu Lynx, Fay Spaniel, etc.) all-range mode, Krystal on a Cloudrunner & Fox in his Arwing vs Drakor protecting Andross, Andross' design & voice from 64, a stage where you fight the SNES version of Andross, Andross' brain, & a mashup of Andross' brain theme from 64 & his theme in this game.
The Andross fight was unexpected (and maybe not totally needed) but I can't complain too much since its pretty much the most badass-looking version of him.
I remember an epic weekend at my cousin's house playing this game front to back, it was a little bit on the short side but it was great fun nonetheless!
I did try to give this game another chance. I was hoping I could overlook the simplicity and linearity of the gameplay, but I found I couldn't overlook the difficulty spikes. From carrying the barrel up the overlong helix in Darkice Mines, to those rail-shooting sections in Dragon Rock with the really jittery aiming, and that abomination The Test of Fear, really left a bad taste in my mouth. The game does have charm, and a nice atmospheric vibe, but I don't think I ever want to play through it again. Because it's a game where you have to commit 15+ hours for a full playthrough, I know I'd only dread having to eventually replay certain sections. Funnily enough, the Test of Strength wasn't one of them (I found that a doddle).
Recently learned if you have full health the test of fear is easier which is why I didn’t struggle. The lower the health the harder it is. I never found this game much of a challenge on the replay but I get what you mean with the aiming. It’s pretty lousy. Though spamming the shot works. I understand! The game needed a bit more time to cook to flesh out some of those issues. Something good is underneath tho!
I'm not sure how true this is, but I found a let's play by Rabbidluigi digging into how the Test of Strength gets harder the longer you spend in the match. That would be why beating him in the first 5 seconds is very easy compared to trying to beat him when you're taking too long. Look, this is Rare, they made those button mash Races the way they did in Tooie: this is probably not that far fetched. Or maybe it is, who knows lol. I would love a re-release of this game, even tho the Test of Fear is very motion sickening (I think I had to mute the audio and cover most of the TV with pillows or a cardboard box just to get past it lmao)
If this game ever shows up again in a virtual console expansion like the Switch online 64, I'd want it to come with a special version that places you at the end of the game. They did that for Super Metroid, letting you instantly experience the final boss with 100% item completion. I lost all my old games, but I made it to the end of this one at 99% completion.
Yoooo😭 the muscle foot part was definitely the reason why I couldn’t beat the game until a few years later🥲 after beating him when I got older you could of seen me jumping around with excitement
I remember it being hard for me. And this time made me laugh I beat him so fast. Evidently there is a link to how easy it is based on your health. Same with the test of fear. The more health you have the easier it is.
There's way too much backtracking but I do agree the atmosphere and music are top notch. 20 years later and I still have yet to play a game with locations/settings like the ones in Starfox Adventures.
@@jiggylookback to be fair, it being “not Starfoxy enough” is a good thing for me. I did not like 64 or Command that much (I haven’t played the original, unreleased 2, or Zero)
I personally loved pretty much everything about this game! Except the fact you didn't get to actually fight scales! I was a little sad though that you couldn't explore the Spellstone levels anymore after beating the bosses! I do wish this game could get a remake honestly
Grew up with this only knowing Fox from SSB64/Melee and with no exposure to Zelda. I absolutely adored this game as a kid, but could never get past the Test of Fear, so I never actually finished it. I should replay it one of these days
Did anyone complain about the endless loop your save file gets stuck in at the end? After beating the game, you can boot up your file, but you straight into the Andross fight, then to the credits, and then back to the title screen. Unless I'm missing something, theres a point where theres no way back to the planet to look for secrets you missed. IMO, for a game like this, thats borderline game breaking.
Never had a chance to play this game when I was younger, though thinking about it now I think the Starfox franchise has huge potential for the crew to be exploring other planets on foot rather than just use the space combat formula over and over.
I played this game recently after wanting to play it for a long time, and loved it... except for one thing that actually kept me from finishing the game, and that is the aiming. It just doesn't work, it's too imprecise and jittery, I tried for hours on that part where you have to free the big dinosaur by shooting for targets in a time limit, I just couldn't do it. Apart from that, I really enjoyed my time with the game, but I just can't overlook such a huge design flaw.
Was it a shame we never got Dinosaur Planet? Yes. Was this game all it could've been? Maybe not. Is it a bad game? By no means. Is it a good Starfox game? That one's difficult. Is it a good game, I'd say so. 100%. And I can only hope, unlikely as it sounds, we'll see something come of it or the original Dinosaur Planet concept. Great video
I remember reading that the reason Krystal doesn't have much screen time in the final game is because Rare had originally intended her to be scrapped along with other Dinosaur Planet characters.
@@jiggylookback Yeah, we were fortunate to have her. This game really nailed the music aspect, with David Wise composing some gorgeous atmospheric tunes.
Great video!!!👍🏻 Love this game!!! Finished it several times. For me the hardest part was that Fear Test but I got through it in few attempts:) Awesome game, awesome video!!! Enjoying your content mate, keep up the great work👍🏻🏆
I find it ironic that while the original game that was being developed probably would of probably been a bit better. If it had been released, it would probably of sold terribly due to the 64 being pretty much a dead console by the time the game would of been finished. Rare was at the beginning of it's downward spiral at that point. Starfox saved the game, for better or for worse. I'm glad it did as I loved the game as a kid and still do.
Most naysayers: It's not a space shooter, so it's bad Sensible people: But what about the game itself? What's wrong with it? Most naysayers: It's not a space shooter, so it's bad Thank you for defending such a good game that's hated for such ridiculous reasons.
@jiggylookback Me too and it sold over a million copies, so I'm guessing it was due to negative fan feedback because it was right back to vehicle-based comeback after this.
Honestly I feel like the whole “If it was a different ip, it’d be a good game” thing sucks. With Nuts and Bolts it makes sense though because everyone was expecting a new 3D platformer, but with Adventures, everyone got what they wanted, and Starfox game where you play it on foot. Also yeah, the graphics look incredible for an early GameCube game. The fur effects is like Live & Reloaded but better, and actually fit the game! I’m excited to play this game in the future
The game is still gorgeous even after all of these years and the music I still listen to. :) Krystal is hotter and has more of a consistent character than Lola Bunny. Yeah I said it! :)
A bit of a random comparison, but I concur that Krystal is one of the best character designs to ever come out of Rare. And credit to Imamura and Miyamoto for making her hotter (no joke).
Great video ^^ I never played the game but watched a let's play a few years ago and honestly i liked it. Maby i should play it and make my own opinion.
I love this game. Drop a like if you agree.
One of my favourites when i was a kid👍
@@philosopher51one of mine too! It’s a vibe
This is one of my favorite games of all time, the soundtrack and atmosphere is so good, I’ll watch this video later
I enjoy this game and play it from time to time.
Totally, still love this game when it released in 2002 and still to this day, so upset that when the 3DS was launched Rareware said they were going to bring this game back ! Would have been amazing having Starfox Adventures on the go ! Hopefully see this game on the Switch or it successor !
It gave us Krystal. Enough said.
Panther and Krystal made a great couple
I agree! The design was very Star Wars and looked awesome. Kind of random but I loved the way the blue fire looked too. It was mesmerizing.
I've always loved the Thorntail Hollow music. It has that positive African-like mood with its chanting and bongos that gives you some Lion King vibes.
LEE DOOMSOO TAVOOK- GENERAL SCALES!!
I’m with you!
I lived in this world as a kid. I remember rushing to my gamecube after school to play ball with tricky, or walking around in the sharpclaw costume pretending to be one of the bad guys!
This was one of the first games i(eventually) managed to beat all by myself too
This game will always hold a place in my heart
I love that! Thanks for sharing! :)
I love this game SO MUCH. I was a dinosaur kid with no starfox experience whatsoever. When one of my friends introduced me to a 'real' starfox game, i didn't really care.
Now i see the charm better, but back then i just wanted to get involved in saving the lylat system from blowing up!
You just wanted to do your part. Appreciate your service!
Yes we need to appreciate the games that aren’t Starfox 64 which I do love too!
And heck yeah I defend DK64 lol welcome to my channel!
Theres artifacts including walled City shadowhunters that we see only in Adventures Test of Fear
Rare nailed the atmosphere and mystery even as Starfox Adventures. That kind of exploration across lands is still Starfox-like in its theme kf travel so its warmed up on me more the last few months. Minus stuck mashing A at Lightfoot, i vividly recall grinding fuel cells told i need them, but didnt need them choosing next area anyway.
This is probably the best Star Fox game ever. It's the only SF game by Rare and it introduced us to Krystal
I love both of those things!
That is so sad. It is a comfort game for sure!
Lol that’s so extra and i love it 😂
The atmosphere and the environments are so good that even in the previous unreleased N64 version, they still looked amazing.
For sure! Playing through Dinosaur Planet now myself!
Yeah for real! Me too!
100% that sounds awesome
I never beat the test of fear as a kid, as an adult it still took me about 45 minutes. Hardest part for me. Love this game though!
One of my favorite childhood favorite gamecube games! It will always hold a special place in my heart
Me too :)
I had fun streaming a few months back despite struggling where to go and such, so I am pleased to play this game this recent for the first time.
Always check out Peppy's map and talk to Slippy. Super helpful!
I had been, but I finished the game and it was a blast!
For Tricky, every time he says: "where are we going?" I always start singing the Zaboomafoo theme
Yes 100% we need a return.
One thing that's always perplexed me is the muted consensus around this game when taken in comparison to Beyond Good & Evil, which is remembered much more fondly despite having MANY similarities to SFA. Near identical mechanics, gameplay, & "dungeon" design; staff-based combat with a long-range projectile move used primarily for puzzle solving instead of combat; partner system; vehicle segments; somewhat short and fairly linear…
My only complaint about SFA is one that has to do with the Star Fox license being shoehorned on, but it's not the licence itself.
I didn't know Sabre and Krystal were step-siblings. Good job there's no washing machines on Dinosaur Planet.
I’m with you. We need a starfox revival.
8:42 I don't remember getting past this to be difficult. But the Krazoa shrine just after was too difficult. During my first playthrough as a child, I stopped there and didn't touch the game for many years since then.
A lot of people said something similar!
I loved this game but I hated how certain areas were locked off after completion. No way to explorer the pterodactyl place.
i saw it as Zelda with Star Fox characters, and that was just fine by me lol. i loved assault too, but that game needed more campaign content. the multiplayer was very fun to play around in especially after you unlock the bonuses
I am 100% with you! I loved the multiplayer!
I had high hopes for Assault, but I admit it was kind of disappointing after Adventures wowed me as much as it did back then. Adventures' credits theme made me excited for a sequel, and of course I love the sendoff with Krystal's theme establishing she's part of the team now, and getting together with Fox.
@@bcrossfire1219 I recommend the upcoming Star Overdrive as a successor to SF Adventures.
This game is a masterpiece and still looks better than 99% of games released in the past 25 years.
@@simonrockstream I am so with you. It’s a beautiful game still to this day.
Star Fox adventures dinosaur planet I really like this game
Me too!
@@jiggylookback yes I agree
Same here it’s one of Rare’s best games despite the ending being rushed especially the “fight” against Scales
@@matthewbuckley7757 yeah I never been a big fan of the other Star Fox games tell me Star Fox adventures is better than all of the Star Fox games in my opinion
@@natejoe9924 I would love to see this remaster on switch
Imagine if Rare made a traditional Starfox alongside Adventures...
Switching between two characters would have been really cool.
Love that!! Same! You’re in good company
Test of strength...was stuck on that for YEARS
I remember it being difficult for me back then…but this time made me laugh.
Seeing Fox say he is a Knight.. that weird.
It would be like if Mario was a Power Armored "Plumber" blasting bugs.
I agree. It was jarring
I love 64, adventures and assault as a trilogy, they all have quirks but still enjoy them all
Same!
Agreed. The big changes I would have made are:
Good:
Environments look fantastic.
Krystal looks Fanfucintastic.
(Love the sensual Jungle FoxGirl vibe)
Superb atmospheric music.
(Dark Ice Mines depths music is my fav, that booming start followed by a calming relaxed crescendo with moments of tense unease followed by determination to save everyone trapped inside the Dark Ice mines)
Funny moments gave me a chuckle during my teenage years.
(Fox's reaction to seeing Krystal was my fav, for obvious reasons)
3 of the 4 Dungeon/Planet Pieces Boss Fights were great.
Memorable ending with Krystal joining the Star Fox team.
Bad: (still defending the game but not blind to what RARE was going through that caused these issues)
Didn't get enough development time to include Krystal's part of the story so they had to rush through to make the story focus on Fox after Krystal's brief tutorial arc.
(Watch E3 2002 video to see that StarFox Adventures was the ONLY game RARE was talking about, they knew it back then that RARE was being sold to Microsoft but had to keep a straight face to not cause too many rumors)
General Scales Fight.

Yeah heck yeah! Love assault
(Also, it can happen that he asks WHERE ARE WE GOING? after a long cutscene explaining exactly where you're going, which is just hilarious)
lol never thought about tricky asking that question after things like that. It is funny
This game needs no defense but thanks for the Video! Now if only we can get an HD re release.
Heck yeah!!
Literally my all-time favorite Rare game and that is saying a LOT!
That is saying a lot! Wow!
Thanks for watching as usual :) I’ll try to keep bringing quality content
I just loaded homebrew on a Wii and will be playing this game soon. Thanks for the vid!
Heck yeah! Thanks for watching!
Yeah it definitely is a vibe! Thanks for watching :)
The test of strength minigame and test of fear krazoa spirit never seem to get any easier haha 😂
But i think the game needs some hard aspects to it. If they can’t crank difficulty with the combat, it’s gotta get more difficult elsewhere.
I think it’s an all around good game. I’ll always defend it
Heck yeah! Welcome fellow defender
I understand the gummi ship thing lol, but Starfox is way better then that. This game is a banger! Love core memories like that!
It's a cute & charming game. I've always liked it. The GameCube also had Starfox assault.
Yeah which is another awesome game!
A snes throwback would have been sick!
@@jiggylookback It's mainly inspiration from Star Fox: Event Horizon, the fan game.
Krazoa Palace theme is a banger and has been in my music rotation for 22 years... Also yeah test of strength was tough when I was 13.
It really freaking is! So mysterious and special
The Andross fight was unexpected (and maybe not totally needed) but I can't complain too much since its pretty much the most badass-looking version of him.
That it is, tho 64’s puppet look was scary
@@jiggylookback Fair point!

I remember an epic weekend at my cousin's house playing this game front to back, it was a little bit on the short side but it was great fun nonetheless!
Sounds like an epic weekend indeed
That’s very interesting if true.
I actually enjoyed this game 🎮. I still have it in my retro gaming collection. I'm glad you made a video defending this game, too.
I blame JonTron. He DRAGGED that game through the coals, ripping right into it!
JonTron kinda sucks sometimes doesn’t he?
@@jiggylookback as memeworthy as Jon Jafari is, he CAN suck.

I personally loved pretty much everything about this game! Except the fact you didn't get to actually fight scales! I was a little sad though that you couldn't explore the Spellstone levels anymore after beating the bosses! I do wish this game could get a remake honestly
A remake with a few adjustments would show how much it can shine!! Give us Scales!!
Grew up with this only knowing Fox from SSB64/Melee and with no exposure to Zelda. I absolutely adored this game as a kid, but could never get past the Test of Fear, so I never actually finished it. I should replay it one of these days
Yeah for sure you should! You got this
Did anyone complain about the endless loop your save file gets stuck in at the end? After beating the game, you can boot up your file, but you straight into the Andross fight, then to the credits, and then back to the title screen. Unless I'm missing something, theres a point where theres no way back to the planet to look for secrets you missed. IMO, for a game like this, thats borderline game breaking.
@@relafleur5114 tbh I don’t remember that. I think everytime I’ve finished I’ve just been done, but that is ANNOYING AS HECK.
Never had a chance to play this game when I was younger, though thinking about it now I think the Starfox franchise has huge potential for the crew to be exploring other planets on foot rather than just use the space combat formula over and over.
100% I’d love a mix.
The aiming does get pretty cruddy. I wouldn’t say it’s game breaking. But it has its moments for sure.

I find it ironic that while the original game that was being developed probably would of probably been a bit better.
Yeah everyone says that. I’m with you.
Starfox 64 you can also play on foot so it wasn't a first here.
@@omegapirate Oh yeah I forgot, it was just very hard to unlock and it wasn’t anything fun. It’s still there though
@@omegapirate I mean yes. I was never skilled enough to unlock it, but that is true. It was however the focus for the first time which is something :)
@@Ninblasto I recommend the upcoming Star Overdrive as a successor to SF Adventures.
The game is still gorgeous even after all of these years and the music I still listen to. :)
Krystal is hotter and has more of a consistent character than Lola Bunny. Yeah I said it! :)
A bit of a random comparison, but I concur that Krystal is one of the best character designs to ever come out of Rare. And credit to Imamura and Miyamoto for making her hotter (no joke).
This game was all the vibes
It really was!
Great video ^^
I never played the game but watched a let's play a few years ago and honestly i liked it. Maby i should play it and make my own opinion.
You totally should play it!
