I first played Starfox Assault on my Steam Deck, and I think the game would be 100x better if the on-foot segements controlled like Ratchet & Clank. Also yes, Zero is a great game that is utterly destroyed by the awful controls and reliance on the dual screen gimmick.
There is a fan game project out there called starfox event horizon. They’re basically taking the three mainline games (64, adventures and assault) and remaking them into one rail line shooting game. They even have some of the original voice actors for it as well. If you’re curious enough I’d recommend checking it out.
I always appreciated Assault for being the last Star Fox game tried to innovate on the gameplay without completely throwing out the formula. The Aparoids were both cool and kinda scary alternates to Andross and Star Fox and Star Wolf being able to team up together is just is a great idea.
It bugs me so much that a lot of people who try out Star Fox Assault don’t realize that you can change the default tank controls to a more modern setup using the c stick to aim.
assault was also mainly designed for multiplayer considering how many options for modes you have in versus mode. on foot with modern controls works great for versus mode, but you can tell a lot of the campaign levels were made just to pad out a single player mode.
And it's still ass to control when you change it bruv. Sorry to say. Legit nothing against you but the entire control scheme plus the optional change both sucked.
It was literally the first thing I did, maybe it's just my weird addiction to exploring options and settings every time I play a game for the first time but it's because of instances like that is why I always do it. (Also I enjoy Assault and on-foot combat seemed like an obvious next step and makes more sense than the Walker to me)
Timestamps for your convenience: 2:53 Star Fox 7:47 Star Fox 64 (+64 3D) 13:00 Star Fox Adventures 18:57 Star Fox Assault 24:06 Star Fox Command 29:44 Star Fox Zero (and Guard) 36:48 Star Fox 2
Not only did Krystal became fully integrated into SF, she effectively became the defacto lead female character of the franchise while Fara Phoenix (from a tie in comic to SF1), Miyu, Fay, and to a lesser extent Katt all fell by the wayside.
To be fair, Fara phoenix, Miyu, and Fay are all characters that weren't made by Imamura and so didn't survive the transition to 64 or future games. Star Wolf survived the transition because Imamura made those characters. Katt is a side character that isn't apart of the team and disappears as soon as she arrived (like seriously she shows up in the fortuna level in zero and just disappears, didn't even help fight the two headed dragon). Not at all ment to bash on Katt. Krystals coming back in later titles despite not originally being a StarFox is actually interesting because the Krystal we get is not only a Star Fox Character but a nintendo character. Weird I know, let me explain so during development of Adventures Rare made plans to remove Krystal completely but Imamura wanted to keep her. He did a redesign of her to be the blue fox with little being covered. That one redesign of her, that one moment if wanting to removed her cause her to become a StarFox character and a nintendo character. She was remade by Imamura (who designs and writes StarFox) and who was at the time a Nintendo employee. It also helps that Miyamoto liked her too.
That's because none of them showed up again or "at all". Star Fox2 was cancelled. Krystal is a mess. And everyone else was simply not important. And the narrative that Star Fox 64 kicked off with made everything much MUCH worse. Just when they had the chance to start fresh....look at what they did. Great ideas for gameplay. And suddenly nobody's heads were screwed on straight. They were legit so lost and confused, it's no wonder why Zero had no arcade mode, didn't do anything to curb all the misinformation, flubbed the whole portals plotpoint, and rehashed a Star Fox 64's story in a more disjointed way. They literally could have just done OG Star Fox or anything else and gotten away with it. In the end, their attempt to cater to OG, SF2, and SF64 fans sank with the Wii U.
@@GoogleMapsTablet no, Katt returns in Command along side Krystal. Granted Imamura changed her design completely in that game. Changed her fur from pink to a black and white cat. She's dressed like she's was trying to cosplay a mortal kombat character.
I have to comment that the single most fucked up line in a nintendo game ever comes from Star Fox 64: Pigma's entry line when you encounter Star Wolf on Bolse is "Daddy screamed rreeeeaaaaal good before he DIED!" After selling out Fox's dad to Andross, to have the audacity to confront their kid and tell them their dad died like a bitch is just beyond evil.
I think Assault while nowhere near perfect would've been a good foundation for future entries if refined. Imagine a snappy and quick game that encouraged you to swap back and forth betwen Arwing, foot, landmaster, and back to arwing. Along with more levels themed around full on range mode
There is a lot of potential it has the best multiplayer in the series it just needs a more fleshed out single player with more Single Player Missions heck just add alternate route side missions between the big story missions. Also how there is no mission on Titania Desert, Zoness Sea Base or the Great Fox map on Single Player even though there is multiplayer maps of them. Plus fun fact tank controls do not exist if you actually select the good Dual Stick controls. Online multiplayer would be epic with all star wolf team members playable
“Five Nights at Slippy’s” actually sounds scarier than “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” Just imagine; You’re in an enclosed room with barely any lights. You ran out of power because you closed the door trying to keep the green, slimy, bipedal mutant from getting to you. The doors? Open. Your defenses? Non-existent. Then, from the shadows of what was once your only hope (now unusable), you hear the faint, bone-chilling voice of what a child of the Grim Reaper would sound like say… *“AH! I’M HIT!”*
Yo the Star Fox Assault Multiplayer would be awesome with online and all Star Wolf members playable There is a lot of potential and a lot of stuff you can see that if they had more time they would of added more missions to the single player like how there is no mission on Titania Desert, Zoness Sea Base or the Great Fox map on Single Player even though there is multiplayer maps of them. There is obviously a lot of content they just never got enough time to get around to making what Star Fox Assault 100% needs is more Single Player Missions heck just add alternate route side missions between the big story missions. You can tell they spent far more time perfecting the multiplayer especially when everything you unlock or the main 100% progression is entirely to unlock all the multiplayer features.
I would mind that very much, for the simple fact that the TTYD is a straight remake, that changes very little about how the game plays or is structured. Assault is deeply flawed, not just in terms of controls, but mostly in the level design, pacing, incentives. A remake would be interesting but it should be an entire overhaul.
@@ruolbu I would disagree with the level design, pacing, and incentive. However I would take a reimagining as long as miyamoto little to no involvement and get more levels with online multiplayer and Co op.
Just a reminder that you can change your controls in Assault for modern dual analog controls if you keep complaining about the default controls. You're welcome.
@litestudios exactly and what so funny is changing the controls setting actually does save assualt and changing the controls in Zero still makes that game a miserable experience. I feel like him saying he likes Zero is just him trying to be a hipster
@@dr.wolfstar1765 i mean while there are ppl out there that like things that are objectively bad just to be contrarian... i don't think gilly is one of them. it's p typical to get annoyed when reviewers miss a glaring opt-out function of a feature they don't like, because reviewers can often make or break game sales. if they miss something huge that could make the game more playable/enjoyable, then that means that people are most likely never gonna know it was even an option in the first place. pretty simple logic here. that being said, it's still kinda funny that he totally missed changing the control scheme on assault by that same token. my guess is that he just assumed that it wasn't a thing since a lot of older games didn't give you the option to change the entire control scheme, only things like inverting the camera and other such minor options. still funny tho.
My biggest disappointment with Star Fox Zero was the fact that I never got to try the co-pilot mode. NOBODY WANTED TO TRY IT WITH ME! I really liked the game and I wish I got to try that mode with friends.
34:11 can I just say I hate it when people try to say you can turn off the motion controls even though you clearly can not. The control option literally defeats the purpose of an off option because it doesn't stay off. You want it off so you can aim and shoot in the traditional way, but the option in question literally activates when you don't want it to.
Yea the control pitch was just coping. I played zero so much wanting it to be fun and even playing with the control scheme. Even at it best as a star fox title the controls are workablebut not acceptable for the series.
Star Fox is probably the franchise I'd like to see use the "Capcom Test" of all things, release a collection on Switch with ports of all the previous games, while including ports of 64 3D and Command that are adjusted for normal controls and one screen. It's kind of a shame how people really enjoy it but haven't gotten more than like, 3 or 4 great games in 30 years.
I feel like almost everybody has a franchise or two where they're like "Yeah, I really like it!" but they actually only love one or entries, but the ones they do love, they love a lot. And that's perfectly okay. And yes, bring back Fay. We need so much more Fay.
Star Fox reminds me of Terminator. They had one story, but wholly incapable of expanding on it, so we just get remakes of the first with slight changes to make them stand apart, but its mostly the same game every time.
I love assault, it was so fun to play with friends where you could hop out of your arwing midflight to pull out a homing missile and fire at someone tailing you. I have no idea if it's competitive but we were all kids and it sure impressed us at the time. The campaign was also in my opinion pretty fun too, I liked the diversity of on foot, vehicle, and plane sections. It would be awesome to get a sequel but that's probably not gonna happen unless it's some indie inspired game
Star Fox Assault is my favorite entry in the series. The Story is obviously peak in the series but the gameplay is the really fun part. The on rail sections is obviously great but the on foot missions were really cool and would really benefit from a sequel or a reimagining of the game to polish its ideas. They are missions that took starfox 64 and took it to the next level by letting you switch between vehicles on the fly. Handling a situation however you want to handle it. In a way its an entry more in line with modern nintendos FREEDOM philosophy. Mario, Zelda, and pokemon going into this open sandbox where the player can go and do whatever how ever they want to. I am really happy that after Zero came out that people came back to these older entries and realized that they were treating them too harshly. Some even started to feel like Star Fox Assault had the right idea and it just needed a gameplay sequel. I really recommend giving Assault another go but using the duel stick control option the game provides when you create a user.
btw in Star Fox Assault you can choose your control style, you should of selected the standard Dual Stick shooter controls instead of tank controls lol Also Star Fox Assault has the best Multiplayer in the entire series.
Man I wish I had a counter of the number of hours my friends and I put into Assault’s multiplayer. Yeah, there are better shooters, but the maps in Assault were a ton of fun
@@t.dmattocks6119 I don’t think I can post links; but there’s a discord! They have a Wiki page with the link, or you can use the join link in Stumblyn’s old TH-cam Playthroughs description!
My idea for a modern Star Fox would be like 80% Arwing and 20% on-foot missions, kinda like a longer version of Assault with better ground control. Maybe introduce some of Fox’s Smash moveset as extra tools, like using the Reflector as a limited shield or using Fox Illusion to zip between cover or flash behind enemies for a few free shots before they realize where you went.
Yes agree what Star Fox Assault 100% needs is more Single Player Missions heck just add alternate route side missions between the big story missions. Also there is no Titania Desert, Zoness Sea Base or the Great Fox map on Single Player even though there is multiplayer maps of them. You can tell they spent far more time perfecting the multiplayer especially when everything you unlock or the main 100% progression is entirely to unlock all the multiplayer features.
People like to rag on about the on-foot sections but also seem to forget they were also part of Star Fox 64's multiplayer. Honestly, most people not liking it comes across as a skill issue.
@@doclouis4236 Most people never unlocked the on-foot on Star Fox 64 because you had to 100% complete the game with all medals obtained in every mission in both Normal and Expert Mode.
@@doclouis4236 they sucked in multiplayer. It was just a funny novelty to be so tiny and hard to hit with the arwing. But the on foot gameplay in SF64 itself sucked. It wasnt something you were going to enjoy for very long.
Miyu and Fay were essentially retooled into Bill and Katt, while Algy became Andrew. Although all of them are distinct enough to be separate characters.
I find it absolutely ironic that I've avoided all of Star Fox for most of my life, and the first one I ever played all the way through when I decided to beat the games, was Star Fox Command, I loved the game enough to beat it all the way, something I didn't do with SF64 and the original SNES game. I later hunted all the other games down and now own copies of every game in the series. The same thing happened on my FNAF journey: I started with one game, coincidentally the one most of the fans consider inferior and the most hated in the series, and I ended up loving it enough to buy the whole series. People have gone far as calling me "Not a real fan" because I joined the hype so late, but I gotta say, if I'm not a real fan, there never will be at this point, no? NEVER judge a game series by its community. They might collectively, mind-hive themselves into hating something you'll end up loving, or loving something you might hate.
@@osets2117 The first one? No one thinks that one aged badly, if anything, it's the only one that's respected by critics outside the community. That's probably not what you meant, your dumbass thought that I don't know what fnaf is, seriously?.
Star Fox Zero I had a lot of fun with despite its flaws. A shame it hasn't got a Switch port like many of the other Wii U heavy hitters, it deserves a second chance at life
It's for the best that it doesn't. Too tied to the gamepad for standard controls, and being a rehash of lylat wars. Are we really okay pushing this false narrative that StarFox is only one game, fans don't want or even like change, or that just want to play the same game over and over?
@@kurokamina8429Star Fox Zero is a totally unique experience, it’s a fantastic game with deep mechanics. But those deep mechanics, like you said, are the reason it won’t be ported. There just too many advanced moves you can’t do with Star fox 64 controls. It’s just a different game. I also hated the story from adventures to command. It was wise to restart.
@@harrisonkasun7542 about that... Nintendo never stated that it was a reboot but just a reimagining. Reimagining is just another term they slap on a title like a remake or remaster. Look at Metroid ZERO Mission, its called a reimagining by the creator but it did not reboot the series. Also Star Fox Zero resembles 64 so much because A. Miyamoto felt like the 64 style would work with his gimmick and B. It's Miyamoto, of course he's gonna use lylat wars again. Also StarFox Zero the battle begins name drops Sauria and starlink DLC references DP with the Corneria Cake. A very weird reboot if they are using elements 64 purist would despise. Also one of the trailers for zero was the "the history of StarFox" which is weird to do if it's a reboot. Wouldn't you want to leave it all in the past? Star Fox Zero is the lylat wars from a different perspective and exists in the same spot as the original starfox and 64. They are interchangeable in the timeline. Also commands ending sucks but Star Fox Assault story is the best in the entire series.
@@osets2117 originally Imamura wanted to make a linear story but Cuthbert wanted the game to have alternative routes which results in the game having multiple different endings. This was a bad idea, even though 64 had different endings, there were only two and were different enough to be special while still being sort of the same. Command however are so different, weird, forced, or inconclusive.
A major issue with the series is that it's had so many different developers over the years (Argonaut Software, Rare, Namco, PlatinumGames). Nintendo needs to know by now what makes a Star Fox game great... on rail, loveable chatty characters, and quick replayable levels. I still have hope for the franchise.
"Star Fox has been threaded better than F-ZERO" Sure, I'd love to see another F-ZERO game someday but even more than a new Star Fox or F-ZERO game I'd love to see a third Startropics game but I'm probably alone on that.
I actually really liked the on-foot missions in Assault. The controls could have been better, yes, and I wish they would have tried this in a future game to improve them. Combined with the story and characters, Assault is actually my second favorite Star Fox game, after the 64 one.
btw, you can change the controls in Star Fox Assault to Dual Stick, which gets rid of the "tank controls" I don't know why this isn't the default control scheme for the game, but it feels a lot better to play. Personally I think the best a star fox game could do is a campaign mode like in SF64 that's vehicles only, but that has a multiplayer mode like Assault's. 64's multiplayer is severely lacking in variety, especially when you compare it to assault which was MADE for its multiplayer mode.
Nintendo actually did have a really amazing game that switched between an on rails shooter and on foot shooter on the 3DS, which quickly became my favorite 3Ds game of all time. Thing this is, it happened to be a Kid Icarus reboot by our lord and savior Daddy Sakurai of all things. Unfortunately, I don't see them doing that type of game anytime soon, but if they take elements from that game and mix them with Star Fox, I feel like we'd have a winner.
I've actually never played any Starfox game EXCEPT Adventures. I didn't really know anything about the franchise and thought I was learning about it through that game. It wasn't until years later I learned the true story. Adventures will always hold a special place for me though. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Assault is very underrated in my opinion, my nephews just loved playing the multiplayer mode with me so many times, there's a lot of options to play there, you can go on foot, on the Arwing or on the Landmaster, the storymode has way too many walking sections but in general is a pretty solid game and I loved they kept the story of the characters going rather than resetting it to the beginning like in Zero, it's not better than Zero but it's way better than Adventures and Command imo.
StarFox was my first game I played when my aunt gave me her SNES back in highschool. It was such a wild impression of the SNES, and it's still one of my favorite games on the system. When I went to Portland Retro Game Expo a couple years later (where in fact, I believe I met you) I found a vendor selling Nintendo Power mags, and I specifically located an issue with a StarFox poster, and it's been on my wall ever since...
I think part of the issue is that the entire Star Fox continuity has been massively complicated by the existence of Command. How do you continue forward from a game that has like a billion endings, other than just retconning the entire thing? Not that I (or probably most people) would be against it, but it feels like the creatives at Nintendo just don’t know what direction to take.
Bite the bullet and just pick an ending to make canon. The default ending can work because It's the default (and thus could be argued the rest are what ifs) and is something of a status quo reset. Or do a next generation game with Marcus leading a new team against Dash's empire. That seemed like a good setup. Or screw it, go nuts and continue the Fox/Falco become racers and Krystal a bounty hunter timeline and go from there.
@@StarWolf5298There is another option that was brought up by the creators of command. That being starting in the middle of commands story. This option I think is basically a reimagining or a rewrite of commands story which is more preferable. This is a better option because if they changed the style of the gameplay to 64 or Assault then they would have to change how the story is told. Fox and Krystals drama was WAY more of a focus then the Anglars which feel like an after thought. They can't do that with a 64 style they have to make the Anglars be the focus so the drama between fox and Krystal would be retconned or just something in the prolog that doesn't amount to anything because they are just teammates now.
I grew up with the SNES original and the StarFox Assault for the Gamecube and I love both. I was the only one in my family besides my uncle that ever managed to beat it on the hardest difficulty. I didn't fully understand the black hole warp until years later since I didn't know it cycled between 3 exits; I just thought it had one exit for a while depending on your entry point. I even looked up the secret stage and ending and verified it. I also throughly enjoyed the 10 missions of StarFox Assault and the multiplayer mode (which includes extra maps that aren't playable in the single player mode). I wasn't great at the versus mode and a bit disappointed by the lack of a coop mode, but I got all the silver medals and about half of the gold medals for the 10 levels, the silver medals unlocking an arcade game that I forget the name of. I had a great time with both but never got to play any of the other entries so thanks for the video!
I know Starlink battle for Atlas isn’t mentioned because it’s not a StarFox game, but it did have some good stuff. Especially the characters. It proves that StarFox could work great as an animated series
Star Fox Assault you can change the controls to that of a more traditional twin stick 3rd person shooter, and if you don't playing you're it wrong. I blame the developers for having the option semi hidden, and you can't change it in the middle of a mission, and it should have been default anyways. But you don't have to play it with the tank controls, and it's far less frustrating and makes the alot of the hate for those portions of the game vanish. Don't get me wrong, I think the game could have put more of an emphasis on the Arwing, but it's still a great a game.
I honestly think there is like a brain wiring thing with Starfox Zero that makes it fucking infuriating to play for most people. Since people who actually find the controls fine literally cannot grasp why so many people hate it. I kind of reminds me of how some of us just cannot use VR without getting motion sickness.
Actually I think it comes down to: 1. In consistent learning curve: You can start really high or really low. Both in how fast it clicks and patients. 2. How the game was marketed: It really came across that you need to bounce back and forth between two screens so people did that when they got it. 3. How the game teaches you to play: Basically number 2 but also not mentioning the minus button or the other control option. I had to search online to learn you can do any of those things. 4. Coming expecting traditional controls or even hoping that they are an option. It hurts when a game is so close to what you want but is completely sabotaged by a forced gimmick. 5. Mixed fan base: The series has gained fans believe it or not from the likes of Adventures, Assault and even command and they all have their own expectations for the series and the game didn't meet it.
Starfox is one of my favorite games ever. I actually did a walkthrough through Cornaria when I was in college. I recorded myself playing through the stage on a VHS and explained how to walk through the stage just by the sounds. I love this game so much
I just want to say thank you. I have been looking into getting Star Fox Zero the past several days (late to the game I know) and this video comes out in the meantime. Yours is the only video I’ve seen that even bothers to mention that the motion controls can be switched off and that the screens can be switched with the minus button. Why does no one else mention this? Anyway, thanks again, and I’ll probably be picking up Star Fox Zero now!
33:46 There is a sense of irony to recommending players to change their control settings to get the most enjoyment out of Star Fox Zero, after complaining about the tank controls in Assault when that game offers a Dual Stick control method (which does have the issue of using R to shoot, which wouldn't be bad if it wasn't on the GameCube controller, but you do drop the tank controls). I would accept a remaster of either game to improve the controls however (and in the case of Assault, possibly expand the multiplayer even more). On that note, I do think it would have been neat if there was a brief overview of the multiplayer modes as well, since 64's multiplayer actually originated the on-foot gameplay of Assault (albeit in a more limited form), Assault has the most fleshed-out multiplayer with 16 stages (with 5 generic stages, 8 stages taken from the campaign, a stage around the Great Fox, and 2 stages on Titania and Zoness unique to multiplayer) and several items, Command drastically simplifying the multiplayer, and 64 3D following in suit by only having the Arwing sections of 64's multiplayer and only allowing other players through download play. There was also the Star Fox crossover with Starlink: Battle for Atlas that happened in 2018, which is drastically different from the other Star Fox games but still serves as their most recent appearance in a game outside of Smash Bros and is integrated into the story right from the start of the campaign. As for the future of the Star Fox series, there is hope since apparently Nintendo Switch Sports has some Star Fox data in the files, so hopefully we get a new game on the Switch's successor as a way to show what the new console is capable of.
Yes, exactly! I don't know if he ignored it or didn't even try it which is hypocritical coming from the guy who wants people to give zero a second chance. Instead people have been giving StarFox Assault a second chance ironically enough. Not just the Nintendo sports stuff but there as been a brand new trade mark for starfox (not renewed) around the same time of princess peach getting a new trademark for her new game. Then recently Mr. Robot found either two new starfox trademarks or just another new one but with more details for both trademarks. One being categorized as Puzzles or jigsaw Puzzles and another being entertainment related. Based on the other trademarked things listed and how they are categorized, the Puzzles one is probably just that and the entertainment one isn't for a game but something related to movies or TV shows. Considering that Zelda is finally getting its live action adaptation after the original one got canceled thanks to Netflix, Nintendo might be revisiting there StarFox show that they were also planning to do with Netflix. Just a theory though.
The thing is, I wouldn’t have liked the game even if the controls had been fixed. The controls were barely the problem. The sections weren’t fun to me regardless. The tank controls just made a game I already mostly wasn’t enjoying less enjoyable.
Very pleased to hear you enjoyed 2. It's probably my personal favorite in the series; the combination of arcade dogfighting with RTS elements is surprisingly engaging, especially on the higher difficulties. I think the broader problem Star Fox has is that it's a genre that has, unfortunately, fallen out of favor over the years. Shmups were a-dime-a-dozen during the NES and SNES days, and there were still a decent number of 'em in the N64/Playstation era. After that, they started to kinda die out, with other genres taking their place instead. Nowadays, that kind of gameplay seems to only crop up in indie titles and the occasional remake. That's also why I think Zero was doomed from the start - marketing such an out-of-vogue genre as a big-shot system-seller was never going to end well, even if the game itself wasn't saddled with the motion control issues. I'd call it a safe bet that, if we ever get another Star Fox game, it probably won't be a shmup - and if it is, it'll be a budget-title at best. Which kinda sucks.
10:30 - multiple overlapping instances of "fox get this guy off me," "i can't shake this guy," "what's taking you so long fox," that play during sector z and bolse as you try to get a medal, set to vietnam style flashbacks. On a positive note, i do remember one instance of one of my crewmates turning the tables on star wolf. Only problem was i couldn't get a medal for it lol.
While I never heard of the workarounds mentioned in the video, I did enjoy playing Star Fox: Zero anyway. Something I think could be neat for the next Star Fox game would be to bring back the different ships & playable characters from Star Fox: Command, but mix in the on-rails shooter gameplay from the main series.
I think assault was a great game, very halo like. jumping in and out of the ships. Fighting on the ground air etc I think polish and love it could have really stood out.
A couple things to note, There are mods for the original Star Fox to make it run at a proper framerate and not 5 FPS and even if Star Fox 64 3D looks a lot prettier, the voice acting took a major hit.
I just wish they weren't so gung ho on rebooting it so many times and retelling the first game's storyline. It felt so frustrating to find out Zero would retell Star Fox 1's story again. I wanted a new story with some of the later game characters appearing like Krystal.
Legit did not know about the swapping screens in starfox zero and that alone makes me want to re experience the game once I get my Wii u fixed or replaced. Because the controls and swapping between looking at the TV and the gamepad hurt the experience. and I loved so much of the game.
I've been on a StarFox binge myself lately and suddenly one of my favorite TH-camrs makes a Starfox video. Funny how that works out. I figured the assault section would go like that. While it's not perfect assault was a blueprint that they SHOULD have gone with. A better balance of gameplay modes and more fleshed out objectives would have been perfect going forward but nope. Command had to exist Also can we stop pretending that ground control is THAT bad? It's got the same control screen as Metroid prime save for one button and even then there is a twin stick option. And while something like this shouldn't factor into a review I'm pretty sure most people who have never played assault before are going to emulate it so just, use the twin stick option and modify the controls in the emulator and it's fine. I also really enjoyed Star Fox Zero. Be on rail stuff is fantastic as always and the all range mode isn't super bad until it requires lock on precision
Honestly, I haven't played Venom 1 in years. Not just because I've been playing Star Fox 64 for a long time now and don't find it that hard, but because I find the Rival Fight against Wolfen 2 better and much more fun than the entirety of Venom 1.
I think with a little tweaking, the Assault gameplay should be the basis moving forward for the series. I'd love to get more games like Assault. I love that game
I feel like Star Fox Zero is due for an enhanced port. Having a more standard control scheme & some more original levels would do wonders for the game. Maybe even throw in the vs. multiplayer mode from the 64 game for good measure.
As someone who got all the medals, understood the controls, expiramented traditional controls, and considering the state of the series...no. You might as well be asking for a brand new game which you should be anyways. StarFox Zero was made around the gamepad, it was a wii u gamepad game first and foremost then a starfox game. Try to give it traditional controls and give the walker 3rd person controls and guess what? You can actually get through the levels but you more then likely won't be able to get all of the medals or the high scores because of how the enemies are placed. Even the boss are gonna be an ass to beat without them. Even if they could it would still be lylat wars again. People outside of the community laugh at us because of narratives like "The StarFox series is only one game" "StarFox fans don't like or want change" "StarFox fans just want to play the EXACT SAME GAME over and over again". Getting a port of zero is the last thing the series needs.
@@kurokamina8429What's funny about the whole Starfox Zero debacle was people kept whining and complaining at Nintendo to make a game that takes advantage of the Wii U gamepad and once they got it in Starfox Zero it was suddenly too complicated for them and crapped on it even though it was exactly what people were asking for.
Just last week I started making my way through the series, so it was so nice to stumble into this! If Assault had only a couple more flight missions I think people would consider it an all-time classic. And Command, to me, is a fun spin-off if you take it on its own terms. I think I'll try Starlink sometime, curious to see if it can scratch the same itch!
Star Fox 64 3D was my introduction to the series when I was a kid. And agreed, it was arcady and replayable as hell. I went for Higher scores each run, perfecting my routes through each level, rememberihg where enemies would come so i could shoot them down. Idk how it was on N64, but on the 3DS your score at the end would be displayed as a sort of "paycheck" for general pepper and he would comment on it. And if you get a very high score (as in, Peoper has to pay star fox a lot for this job) he would say "Whaaat? I cant believe it!" Man was I proud as a kid to send Pepper a super high bill xD
If you hack your 3DS, you can set it up to use the circle pad to control StarFox Command(Super Mario 64 DS as well) instead of the touch screen. Let me tell you, it's a game changer. Made Command so much more enjoyable.
99% of Assault is on foot. Like, did you even play more than the first two missions!? 2 missions are entirely rail shooting, and 1 is mostly rail shooting with a short all range section for fighting the Aparoid Queen. The all-range Arwing and the LandMaster are both available in part or in entirety for all of 6 missions with one of those being entirely all-range Arwing combat in Orbital Gate. That's 9 missions where it is majority vehicles with some parts here and there where it is absolutely necessary to jump out and go on foot and not really for that long, with the exception being Corneria City. This is exactly where StarFox Zero came from lol. That game was awful, but I think it was kinda earned.
I'm a bit more partial to Assault. I will however point out that the Arwing doesn't get enough time to shine, and the segments where you're on a wing with an infinite ammo blaster are missed opportunities to somewhat remedy that issue.
21:19 shooter controls were still being figured out at that point, it wasn't until years later that the standard was fully set But according to interviews they said they did this make it easier for japanese audiences. Also the game does have other control options like the now standard Duel stick control scheme. I'm assuming when you played you went to guest mode which I believe automatically sets it to the tank controls or you made a user and just didn't pay attention to what the controls were for. Not to be rude.
Only played a little bit of Star Fox Zero, but I kinda like the Gamepad gimmick. Really gives the immersion of being put in a cockpit. Having to multitask can be annoying, but we don't have enough games that give a unique experience. Closest I felt to a VR game or a game like Steel Battalion. That said, the criticism of it having no true multiplayer is completely valid. That's the only criticism I agree with so far.
Cool, it's rare that I find a video that talks about these games in a way I can relate. For the most part. I'm more harsh towards Zeros failings, but still consider it better than the GC or DS games.
The Star Fox series is a perfect example of why nothing will ever beat the tried and true formula of simply taking what you did before, and just doing it again, bigger and better in every conceivable way. Any game series that tries to change up the formula or stray away from the solid foundation set by the previous game, has always resulted in negativity and the downfall of the series. That is why you make a game that sets a solid foundation, and then you build upon that game with a sequel, which takes what the previous game did, but makes it even bigger and better in every single way, and then you make a third game, which does everything even bigger and better than the 2nd game did, and so on and so forth. That is how you keep a game series popular and successful.
Well, I wish someone I watch on youtube would have mentioned the screen swapping years ago. That's why I get so annoyed when people get outraged about "OMG THIS THING SUCKS!" when there's an easy solution nobody bothers to learn or talk about. I never bought the game, and the e-shop has been dead a while to get an easy digital version.
I like how this was followed uo with Kit and Kryata making a video playing Assault and loving it. Followed up with the rise of rumors of Assault getting a remake or remaster.
Calling Command's characterization of every character as "The grossest Ken Pender's-ass rendition of the Star Fox cast" is just so validating and funny as all hell. Thank you for that. Also, thank you for being one of the few who understands that Zero is a net positive for the franchise and re-oriented the series in the right direction.
As a kid, I had played the SNES and N64 ones and I was a big fan of Nintendo characters. But I hated the on rails gameplay haha I wanted to play them on foot like in Smash more than anything and Adventures and Assault are the ones that excited me the most. Still my favorites because of this bizarre reason
I haven't played Zero but the thing i think is that Zero is the video game equivalent of Cilantro where it's either delicious or tastes like soap just based on your body make up, in Zero's case your brain makeup. The bad or good qualities are hard to perceive a lot of the time because it literally just don't exist in the respective person's brain wiring.
I do not agree with you, Assult is a good game WAY better then I do think some understand. there is flying and foot, also in SFN64 had foot section so it was keeped in mine. pretty sure its well still needed to define the foot sections but can have a good promess of a good shooter game imo.
Hell an earlier version of 64 had used the on foot fox for another version of venom. On foot gameplay really was on their mind throughout starfox history.
I thought the controls for command worked well but I used the thumb-wristband that tied onto the back of the original DS that lets you still hold the DS with your right hand and fire with the right trigger so maybe that's the difference
I really do hope that Star Fox Zero gets a second shot at life through an enhanced port, cause dang it it needs it. Aside from that a true sequel to Star Fox 64 is a must, it's many people's favorite Nintendo game including mine.
This is just a bad idea in general. Too much work would need to be made to make it work on switch with traditional controls which is what people wanted. Even if they just port it but made the aiming radical accurate, people still won't give it a chance. It has a bad reputation that it can't undo. This is ignoring the fact that we would be getting Lylat wars again. Are the general audience right? Are starfox fans really just a bunch people who doesn't like change? That they despises anything that isn't 64 again? Is this series not a series but just one game? This is the narrative right now around starfox. Let's move on!
The problem with Star Fox is, from what I know of the plot, is they keep remaking SF 1 and I love the idea of the plot. Just not seeing it three times on three consoles

So what's your favorite game in the series? Are there any entries you think are better than people give them credit for?
Yeah that's gonna be a big *NO.*
I first played Starfox Assault on my Steam Deck, and I think the game would be 100x better if the on-foot segements controlled like Ratchet & Clank.
Also yes, Zero is a great game that is utterly destroyed by the awful controls and reliance on the dual screen gimmick.
@@JRWolfe-gd9cr I recommend Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-sparked!, and Bot Vice there like Star Fox Assault in 2d.
@@dude98a.k.adudewhereismyca84no not really, I never got that feeling even after being pointed out
And it's still ass to control when you change it bruv. Sorry to say. Legit nothing against you but the entire control scheme plus the optional change both sucked.
What do you expect from Nintendo fans? They do literally zero compromises when it comes to game controllers.
It was literally the first thing I did, maybe it's just my weird addiction to exploring options and settings every time I play a game for the first time but it's because of instances like that is why I always do it.
@@kurokamina8429 In conclusion: Japanese Man Horny For Female Vixen.
In the end, their attempt to cater to OG, SF2, and SF64 fans sank with the Wii U.
i thought katt became krystal in adventures and assault
That line always stuck with me when I played Star Fox 64. He is so vile for that.
I think Assault while nowhere near perfect would've been a good foundation for future entries if refined. Imagine a snappy and quick game that encouraged you to swap back and forth betwen Arwing, foot, landmaster, and back to arwing. Along with more levels themed around full on range mode
You are not the only one, its actually something that's been growing in recent years and I'm here for it!
@@patyos2 I recommend Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-sparked!, and Bot Vice there like Star Fox Assault in 2d.
“Five Nights at Slippy’s” actually sounds scarier than “Five Nights at Freddy’s.”
Just imagine;
You’re in an enclosed room with barely any lights. You ran out of power because you closed the door trying to keep the green, slimy, bipedal mutant from getting to you. The doors? Open. Your defenses? Non-existent. Then, from the shadows of what was once your only hope (now unusable), you hear the faint, bone-chilling voice of what a child of the Grim Reaper would sound like say…
*“AH! I’M HIT!”*
"I GOT YOU NOW!"
"ESCAPING? I DON'T THINK SO!!"
"Hi, Fox, it's Slippy. Seems like you need some help"
"Slippy here! Got yourself stuck (voice crack) aGaiN?!"
The number of times that Slippy says in Star Fox Adventures, "YOU MISSED A GOLD RING!" made me want to throw my controller at the TV
They kept him true to character, at least.
Stop missing gold rings. :p
Sounds like the Star Fox experience
I wouldn't mind if StarFox Assault got a remaster like TTYD for Switch or the successor
Yo the Star Fox Assault Multiplayer would be awesome with online and all Star Wolf members playable
There is a lot of potential and a lot of stuff you can see that if they had more time they would of added more missions to the single player like how there is no mission on Titania Desert, Zoness Sea Base or the Great Fox map on Single Player even though there is multiplayer maps of them.
That's what I'm really hoping bandai namco has been working on. I need starfox back in my life
I would mind that very much, for the simple fact that the TTYD is a straight remake, that changes very little about how the game plays or is structured.
Actually, Assult has multiple control schemes. The default is Tank but twin stick controls are an option
This ☝️
@TheSupersmash97 kind of funny because during Zero he pretty much said changing from the default control scheme is a no brainer
@litestudios exactly and what so funny is changing the controls setting actually does save assualt and changing the controls in Zero still makes that game a miserable experience. I feel like him saying he likes Zero is just him trying to be a hipster
No I disagree. I loved Zero
Starfox Adventures and Windwaker were my rainy day games as a kid. Great memories

My biggest disappointment with Star Fox Zero was the fact that I never got to try the co-pilot mode. NOBODY WANTED TO TRY IT WITH ME! I really liked the game and I wish I got to try that mode with friends.
Sounds fun. You still interested?
To its credit, Salvation....well....tried to expand the world and story.
Star Fox Assault is absolute Peak
I really recommend giving Assault another go but using the duel stick control option the game provides when you create a user.
lol yes just use the Dual Stick controls lol why did he use the tank controls lol
btw in Star Fox Assault you can choose your control style, you should of selected the standard Dual Stick shooter controls instead of tank controls lol Also Star Fox Assault has the best Multiplayer in the entire series.
Man I wish I had a counter of the number of hours my friends and I put into Assault’s multiplayer. Yeah, there are better shooters, but the maps in Assault were a ton of fun

Maybe introduce some of Fox’s Smash moveset as extra tools, like using the Reflector as a limited shield or using Fox Illusion to zip between cover or flash behind enemies for a few free shots before they realize where you went.

I mean when it comes to Miyu fans really lean on her tomboy trait to differ from Katt.

Star Fox Zero is the lylat wars from a different perspective and exists in the same spot as the original starfox and 64. They are interchangeable in the timeline.

"Star Fox has been threaded better than F-ZERO"
Sure, I'd love to see another F-ZERO game someday but even more than a new Star Fox or F-ZERO game I'd love to see a third Startropics game but I'm probably alone on that.
That game annoys me for the simple fact that it sounds like star fox assault 2 and that the starfox IP was an option for his game.
I've actually never played any Starfox game EXCEPT Adventures. I didn't really know anything about the franchise and thought I was learning about it through that game. It wasn't until years later I learned the true story.
Adventures will always hold a special place for me though. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

They should start back up from Assault. Maybe even remake it first instead of the og game for the 5th time.

There’s endings in that game that set everything back to the normal. It’s really not that hard to pick an ending that doesn’t mess with anything
Time to do a barrel roll
I know Starlink battle for Atlas isn’t mentioned because it’s not a StarFox game, but it did have some good stuff. Especially the characters. It proves that StarFox could work great as an animated series
Hard disagree.
Star Fox Assault had such an amazing story, and the mission on foot, were fucking amazing.
Finally someone other than me who likes Star Fox Zero!
Actually I think it comes down to:
@@gillythekid I'm sorry that you feel that way
Very pleased to hear you enjoyed 2.
Which kinda sucks.
thanks for helping me find one of my childhood games! gonna love replaying starfox assault (i think... i hope)
*I'LL. NEVER UNSEE THAT GIMME UNSEE JUICE*
Always happy to see Star Fox videos. Genuinely wish the series got more love!
Have you looked at star fox event horizon? Its a fan made game thats slowly gathering steam
I love starfox assault. The multi-player was a favorite. I wish it was longer and had more story stages
I recommend Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-sparked!, and Bot Vice there like Star Fox Assault in 2d.
*My Favorites:*
Starfox 64 7:47
Starfox Adventures 13:04
Starfox Zero 29:52
While I never heard of the workarounds mentioned in the video, I did enjoy playing Star Fox: Zero anyway. Something I think could be neat for the next Star Fox game would be to bring back the different ships & playable characters from Star Fox: Command, but mix in the on-rails shooter gameplay from the main series.
I think assault was a great game, very halo like. jumping in and out of the ships. Fighting on the ground air etc I think polish and love it could have really stood out.
I love Star fox so much it’s really awesome series and tons of fun growing up in my opinion.
Just kinda blows my mind that Nintendo hasn't given StarFox a shot on a "successful" home console since the 90s.
Command had to exist
Also can we stop pretending that ground control is THAT bad? It's got the same control screen as Metroid prime save for one button and even then there is a twin stick option. And while something like this shouldn't factor into a review I'm pretty sure most people who have never played assault before are going to emulate it so just, use the twin stick option and modify the controls in the emulator and it's fine.
I also really enjoyed Star Fox Zero. Be on rail stuff is fantastic as always and the all range mode isn't super bad until it requires lock on precision
Yoooooo same!
This is what I thought too. But then I played it and I no longer think that anymore.
Loved Star Fox Assault as a kid 🙂
Star Fox 64 3D was my introduction to the series when I was a kid.
And agreed, it was arcady and replayable as hell. I went for Higher scores each run, perfecting my routes through each level, rememberihg where enemies would come so i could shoot them down.
Idk how it was on N64, but on the 3DS your score at the end would be displayed as a sort of "paycheck" for general pepper and he would comment on it. And if you get a very high score (as in, Peoper has to pay star fox a lot for this job) he would say "Whaaat? I cant believe it!"
Man was I proud as a kid to send Pepper a super high bill xD
If you already own Starfox Zero highly recommend trying the co-op mode. Me and my brother had alot of fun playing it that way.
We need a new Starfox game!
I recommend Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-sparked!, and Bot Vice there like Star Fox Assault in 2d.
I'm a bit more partial to Assault. I will however point out that the Arwing doesn't get enough time to shine, and the segments where you're on a wing with an infinite ammo blaster are missed opportunities to somewhat remedy that issue.
Congrats on the 100k subs!
I did NOT get notified about this upload! Thank god it just popped up in my feed a week later! Love some Gilly and StarFox
Cool, it's rare that I find a video that talks about these games in a way I can relate. For the most part. I'm more harsh towards Zeros failings, but still consider it better than the GC or DS games.
One of my favorite Franchise, 64 really brings a lots of memories.
Anyone who says they’re a Star Fox fan, is really just saying they only like 64
You are in
actuality, the 1st and only person I've heard talk about the control options.
If you like Star Fox, you should also check out the Panzer Dragoon series. They’re all very good rail shooter and 1 overlooked RPG
But I hated the on rails gameplay haha
I wanted to play them on foot like in Smash more than anything and Adventures and Assault are the ones that excited me the most.
I remember you streaming StarFox Zero after it came out and you and I defending the game. Can't believe it's been 8 years... 😅
I thought the controls for command worked well but I used the thumb-wristband that tied onto the back of the original DS that lets you still hold the DS with your right hand and fire with the right trigger so maybe that's the difference
Putting Krystal on the thumbnail guaranteed you at least a few views, that's for sure.
Especially since it's her tribal look.
Gilly remembers Starfox...too bad Nintendo doesn't.
