I was a game tester on the original FEAR (even got a spot in the credits!) and it was by far one of my favourite times in that job. I'm a huge horror movie fan and love first-person shooters, so I was eating this stuff up. Newer games have fun physics and great weapons, but FEAR just did what it did SO well and kept it tight. I bought a new copy off GOG a while back, and the AI still marvels me.
It's still one of my favorite games and I have a lot of great memories with it. My dad used to work at Dell testing out new PC's and software before they came out and got to bring them home. He knew someone who got the Fear game a little before it came out and they gave him 2 copies. We used to play the game together with top of the line PC's that had not been released yet. Super good memories with this game and is still a ton of fun.
I played fear long time ago when I was a kid forgot about it BCS it was in an internet cafe and I was new to gaming but it was stuck in my mind until a couple of years later I found it and for the last 10 years I've been playing it a lot even now I got it installed with some mods that bring back some beta elements.
@@MatadorShifter When I got on the project, it was late in the beta testing. I do recall my first day, I got into the scare moment when you're in a long hallway and the ceiling becomes a blood river. When Alma started walking towards me, I moved closer to see her better and died. When I joked about it to my lead, he told me to write it up as a bug as players were not supposed to die in scare moments 😆
The only thing I would say about Perseus Mandate is the trainyard section where replicas were executing civilians, but there was only one survivor because they got shot down. The survivor had a mental breakdown and heavily breathing. That moment hit hard despite the whole expansion felt empty
FEAR 2 isn’t bad. Slightly generic yes but it’s not bad at all. FEAR is iconic and a true FPS masterpiece so expectations were super high for the sequel. Wasn’t there also development tussles/ disputes around licences too (hence the name change Project Origin)
I just want fear to be moddable as L4D and Half Life. Ik there’s those cheap Polish games but a unicorn gun mod or Alma as a Thomas The Train model would go batshit crazy.
I still got my original DVD disc of this game where it came in with the "Making of FEAR" video and a funny video Machima skit using the FEAR engine. A bit shame F3AR wasn't successful, as it sort of a hidden gem if you can look past the weak limited weapons, but the story was a good conclusion to the trilogy and the set piece firefight map was intense.
The F.E.A.R 3 co-op was the only saving grace of the game. I did enjoy playing it with friends. It was also cool how each character played differently.
My grandfather played videogames up to the day of his death and he loved shooters like FEAR, so having one of my favorite channels cover it makes me very happy. :)
Besides the alma ladder spook, I literally screamed at a replica apc slamming through a garage door. It happens out of absolutely nowhere. Awesome game.
I remember that I bought the original FEAR on GOG early on in my sophomore year of high school (late 2019) and it quickly became my favorite game of all time. I had really bad anxiety issues back then and that game was there for me throughout all of it. I even left a school football game early because I was uncomfortable around that many people and spent the rest of the night playing FEAR. I then bought FEAR 2 during late January/early February of 2020 and distinctly remember being disappointed when I played it and decided to skip FEAR 3 all together. On another note, I do kind of wish that in your video on the original FEAR and Extraction Point, you explained what to do when it gives you the server disconnection despite you playing single player because I kept getting that issue in Extraction Point and decided to just allow the ending to be spoiled to me because I thought I wouldn’t discover the trick of lowering the graphics quality right before the next loading screen until you explained it in your Perseus Mandate video.
I don't think that's the only ladder scare... I distinctly remember a point where you're on a ladder and pass a vent and something happens in the vent.
As a kid i was playing 1st FEAR at ~30fps in 1024x768 res just to enjoy all these explosions in slow mo. 1 of the best FPS games by far and same as u, if i could force any of my friends to play old game which they never played it would be FEAR cuz of satisfying combat and how flashy it looks with all these flaying sparks, lights, explosions etc. Im not a fan of horror games at all but this game delivers, since there is a ton of remakes these days i would love to see FEAR's 1 soon. BTW original is on steam sale now for around 2$, maybe it's time to try this game in 300fps instead of 30 xD
I really enjoyed F1 and F2 back in the day. Played again this year and really enjoyed But I agree, F2 needs more scenes like the elementary school F3 absolutely sucks. Monolith is making a Wonder Woman game now, hope it will be good
It's also worth mentioning that FEAR 1 let you shoot your own grenades - if you whiffed the throw, you could enter bullet time and correct it spectacularly. FEAR 2 doesn't allow this.
F.E.A.R. 2 suffered the "Has to be call of duty" effect because I do believe Modern Warfare was out around this time which explains some of the mechanics for the game. This and F.3.A.R. were just not very good, 3 being maybe the final nail in the coffin. Then Trepang came out, then Trepang 2 came out, the resurgence for more F.E.A.R. is pretty mild but I say Warner Bros. needs to do more with the IP and reboot the franchise, then go the original rout for what was originally intended for this game.
F.E.A.R Extraction Point and F.E.A.R 2 Project Origin both scares the hell of me. They both have horror vibes. Hey Jarek ,can you do the review of Trepang2 BladeKisser?
I played this series a bit weird My first game was Fear Files on 360 then I played Fear 2 & 3 didn’t play the first FEAR till 2020 and during that I kept thinking Files and 1 were the same game 😂
The plural of anecdote isn't data, but I had a great time with the 360 version of the game. Maybe the fact that I had the "elite" version of the 360 that came out in around '08/'09 helped, IDK.

I play it at least once a year. One of the all time greats.

Do you remember if there are any changes in the gameplay compared to the earlier betas amd alphas you had tested?

Correct ! It's a shame monolith is stuck making pos lord of the rings games.

That's because monolith didnt release the source code or any modding tools. We're hoping they will release the source code at some point.
@@AJBrewskyand since they are held hostage by Warner Bros, the best we can do is demand a remake…
"analyzed F.E.A.R in every way possible" 🤨
ANALyzed.
He only reviewed fear once
He’s kind of missing a base game video but he gives a cliff notes in his XP video
Reminds me of that "romance" Dany chapter with Daario "taking her every way a man can take a woman" lol
Look im only saying. I would not run away from alma if i was beckett.

That machinima was actually made by the red vs blue guys.
@@Jarekthegamingdragon That a name I haven't heard for almost 2 decades now
They can do so much with this series and tell different stories across the world with other things that go bump in the night.
Consider covering F.E.A.R. 2, 2007 and 2008 beta builds
This is the earliest ive ever been to a jarek video
PHENOMENAL GAME - with a HUGELY underrated MP and amazing audio

Solo on Recruit was good time wasting fun especially the airport mission

1:41:21 the laser lens often has not just dust but also a foggy film that requires cleaning with a cotton bud and electronic contact cleaner.
Did that, still didn't work.
Extraction Point was a stunning game.

My man, I'm glad you did this
Great for edit all video into one documentary.
I have physical copies of all 3 for my Xbox 360 AND a copy of FEAR Files as well!

Oh look! A new hyperfixation!
Was just looking up what F.E.A.R is and I'm glad I found ya
If I counted Fear 2&3 as cannon it would destroy my enjoyment of Fear 1 and make me hate the whole series.
If someone were to make a fear clone but have the horror dynamics like that of Mortuary's Assistant... that game would be GOATED.
Fear 1 is the best .
Despite general opinion, i love Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate for the first FEAR =)

Nearly 20 years old where does the time go 😢
It runs and looks really good on Series X that's where I beat it. 60fps upgrade on it.
I still hope FE4R comes out sometime
