the lighting issue with Perseus Mandate is caused by the brigthness settings, you have to lower it, for some reason the default settings make the game brighter than in the base game and Extraction Point despite the slider being in the same position this make the shadows and the dark areas look like they are supposed to like in the other 2 games
@@WTFisTingispingis I guess you can say when Bloo dies to that hole in the game, Everyone in Fosters off screen celebrates as they don't have to suffer through Bloo again.
It seems to me that the issue with PM's lighting is a lack of overall light sources and ambient lighting. F.e.a.r. also used really high light source intensity and source size to give light a larger presence in the visuals. Shaders effects that faked soft shadows (such as the spokes on a lamp shade casting shadows ect) were used super frequently to also do the same. On top of this specific texture layers had higher resolutions to react with light. Inconsistently placing these effects will make the game look like total shit, as we see in persus mandate.

@JarekTheGamingDragon I know it's been almost two years since this video is released but I have the urge to answer on your question. I am well familiar with the Lithtech Jupiter EX (the engine used for FEAR 1 and it's expansions and FEAR 2 + Reborn, FEAR 3 used different engine called Despair engine, the game was a despair tho, ngl). The issue was an entity called World Properties. That's the entity you place on the map that tells the game the informations about the game. Is it SP or MP level, the sound filters, the fog properties, many many little things. It's even used for checkpoints. And one of the settings that World Property entity has is the global brightness. The engine came out in 2004, FEAR 1 in 2005, PM in 2007, the engine isn't modified a lot and we didn't had many technological improvements like today, including the light bouncing stuff. Using many non-casting shadows light sources to simulate light bouncing killed perfomance a lot so devs decided to boost up global brightness a bit up so they can have illuminated maps with fewer light sources that kills framerate (Monolith did it for first FEAR also but they did great balance between global brightness and light sources). Adding too much global brightness will have your map fullbright which looks awful. Timegate did this. They hit for stronger global brightness and they made their map fullbright so they decided to hide it by adding actual light sources that casted shadows on the environment and it didn't worked out well. Devs weren't satisfied with it but art director said "f*** it, publish the game". I hope now you do understand what's the cause, and the only way to have fixed lighting is to open each level file in HEX, find the binaries for world properties entity and to switch it's values for lower brighness. One modder did it and the game actually looks way better.

"Killing Floor is a million times better than Zombies ever will be, and Zombies is really boring." Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
Eh, I liked Perseus Mandate... it's a lot of fun. Yeah, the visuals aren't great and the story has plot holes. But just have fun with it! That's what I did. I never experienced the bugs... other than some ragdoll glitches which I found pretty funny! I say just have fun with it and don't play FEAR 3... I did and that felt unbearable. Well for me it did.
I personally found Perseus Mandate so awful, boring and completely unnecessary that I honestly think FEAR 2 is better than PM. I absolutely hated the bargain basement Helghast simply for how dull they were and the baldies being unfun bullet sponges - they steal so much screen time away from the Replica which have so much more charm and personality despite being literal clones with no identity of their own.
@@InfernalMonsoon I see what you mean, the new faction was rather lacklustre and kinda bullet spongey in my eyes. I don't know why but I don't hate the expansion, to me its more FEAR in the OG game engine and style. That's why I love it. I do feel like replaying Fear 2 and revaluating it some day. I will never replay Fear 3 unless playing as Paxton Fextel is really fun. I never played as him so I don't know.
Nah, it's not a bad game at all. I liked it personally. I see some critic points and agree with some stuff, but hell, the ideas and the atmosphere were still great. Wouldn't say it's bad.
Man I blocked the memory playing perseus mandate as a kid. I remembered extraction point but not what happened in mandate. This video literally popped up in my recommended and now I’m just having memories of fighting teleporting mercenaries in some underground armacham facility. the only memory i had before this was chen getting killed by the scarecrows.
In my opinion, both of F.E.A.R.’s expansion packs are great. In the case of Perseus Mandate, I can say the same thing for Spider-Man 3: I like it because of it’s story, but I can easily see how it’s flawed. Still, you made a good analysis. 👍
Just finished FEAR and don't know should i play FEAR 2? The demo was great Perseus did explain why our character have slow mo power! As Captain Steve said that they have our profile on their experiment for some reason
It annoys me that it turned out the way it did, because Perseus Mandate could have really done something great! The Nightcrawlers had great potential to be a good enemy and the bigger sections that looked like mini wars looked like they were going to be blast, but unfortunately it's just not how it went, the nightcrawlers have even less personality than the ATC guards and the 'bigger sections that looked like mini wars' were mostly too linear, it doesn't help with the fact that this game seems to use retail F.E.A.R. A.I and lighting, not their upgrades from Extraction Point, the A.I improvements in Extraction Point allowed the A.I to engage multiple targets semi effectively, in Perseus Mandate it doesn't feel like it's there because the Replicas are horrible at engaging the F.E.A.R team in the sections where they're all together. Overall, the game had good potential but came out horrible. I wonder what happened?
It’s very cheap towards the middle and end but it’s actually kinda fun I like what Perseus mandate adds like three extra modes and 3 new guns but it’s well yeah you can kinda skip it unless you truly want more fear 1 content then sure give it a try.
That was close, i am on my first run of F.E.A.R 1 and Extraction Point and after that i was wondering if i should play Perseus Mandate. Also thanks for recommending F.E.A.R i had a lot of fun and i loved how scared i was.
If I had to guess it was the crunch every studio does, they obviously did Perseus Mandate after Extraction Point, they were up against the wall, I actually get the premise about cloning Alma, what a nightmare that would be, just poorly executed
@lambda30 It's a joke my dear friend, about how the low quality of the expansion affected Monolith's decision to eschew the events within both from having any impact on the story.
@@AParticularlyConcernedCitizen Events/characters from Perseus Mandate were mentioned in FEAR 2. I don’t think these expansions were really retconned until FEAR 2’s DLC and FEAR 3
Fear 3 by far is the worst. The Fear expansions are a way better and closer of a experience to what Fear is compared to Fear 3. And it's made by the same people, so I'm suprised they completely lost what Fear is with Fear 3.
@@dathip Only part of 3 that really stuck with me was the heavy mech section in the highway level. That was super fun. Would love a game just about that kind of mech combat.
Yeah, I disagree with you on F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (I honestly feel it's an amazing time), but I DEFINITELY agree with you on Perseus Mandate. It might have memorable scares that truly catch you off guard, but Perseus Mandate otherwise is just a downgrade in every sense of the word. It's just buggy, and not fun despite the new Nightcrawler enemies providing some amazing encounters. Say what you will about F.E.A.R. 2, but at least it works, is actually fun and is far more memorable (IMO, I know you and your fellow subscribers consider it a boring waste of space).
Doesn't make sense that you play as a random guy who has all the same reflex powers. it just makes the main character seem not special. also the mercenaries are just copies and they make the replica army feel weaker. The whole expansion feels like a Mod someone made.
You should try hunting Jarek, I think you will dig the whole experience. You just have to be in the right mindset for It. Me myself I only hunt to eat and not for sport. Not an easy thing too, the animals wont stay in the open for you ir for other predators, the stalking is realy intense and hunting can be important for populational control too, I know in the US hunting regulations are prety strict. I realy urge you to think about It and give It a chance, its an intense and emotional experience for me, like I feel 100% connected to nature and somewhat zen.
When I said I don't support doing that irl, I specifically meant hunting exotic game. Obviously stuff like that shouldn't happen. I've hunted before, I found it very boring as it's work. Haul all your equipment into the woods, track animals down, wait forever, shoot your game, drag your game all the way back, I don't see what's fun about it. I'd rather go white water rafting or snow boarding or something.
@@Jarekthegamingdragon its all about the mindset, I used to think like this, my grandpa used to take me to hunt and I got very bored, many years later I got back into It, one particular Hunt that got me into that mindset, It started raining very hard, got compleately soaked but then I realy started to feel like a predator myself, like a snake in the grass, and had a thought like "yeah nature does not care one bit if I'm enjoying this, but I should use this rain to conceal my movement and sound, here I am just another animal looking for a meal" so I soldiered through and crawled in the mud and all, It felt pretty awesome actualy. Like I was dangerous, but also very exposed. Lol. Still, maybe one day try It again. Love your videos and your channel.
I went camping one a month my whole life. lol, I don't need to try it again. I'm not new to the out doors. I live in the pacific northwest. I also don't get a kick out of being an "apex predator." I have a gun, that's hardly exhilarating, it's lopsided in my favor. I get way more of a rush out of white water rafting or other out doors activities. With all due respect I 100% don't get it. The only reason to hunt is if you need the food, which living in Portland, I don't.
I gladly will choose FEAR 1 and its expansion ls over everything that comes after them. FEAR 2 shouldn't have even been about Alma it should have been a new story on Point Man's next mission
I love when that mech falls from the ceiling scene. I played it first when I was 10 back in the days and I was so fucking scared I quit the game immediately haha
Legit had to cheat just to even beat this game, when I didn't have to with the main game and Extraction Point. That really says something. Evidently, TimeGate put a skeleton crew in charge of this particular expansion compared to Extraction Point since they were also hard at work on Section 8 which was set for release the following year after Perseus Mandate.
I need to go back and play through Fear and at least extraction point. I played through the original Fear back in the day on 360, but I got the itch to give it a go again on the highest difficulty. And do the expansions.
@@WllKiedSnake same as X360 but the PS3 version is the worst one in all points. worse res, framerate, inferior bonus mission and a shitty auto-shotgun with a completely broken reload animation.

I agree i just finished Perseus Mandate and things i'm impressed with are Ghost and Spooky moment and Feelings that they trying to separate me with my team But Nightclawers are sooooooo frustrated and Nightclawers big guy(Elite) is weirdly fast i don't enjoy fighting with them And last boss i fought him 2 times (He stick to the wall and Brust my ass open with grenades) 2nd time right after i spawn i set my traps and sticky bomb right where he will jump down and kill him easily it's so boring at least the last fight is fun And my first thought is this guy (who im playing) shouldn't have Slow mo. I said "I expected Perseus to be extremely hard because protagonist isn't Pointman and Slow mo should be exclusive to Pointman" somehow Perseus Mandate makes Slow mo a super soldier thingy where big guy in big rank have
And i thought the same about voice acting of thess Nightclawers they sounds like Arnold and i feel like they trying to make them sounds like bigger bad guy and edgy
What up Jarek. I wasn't Impressed with F. E.A.R Perseus Mandate. The brightness setting were lower and dark. If you look at Nightcrawlers forces look like Replica Assassins. I was surprised find out that Nightcrawler Commander voiced by Peter Lurie who also plays Paxton Fettel and Brian Bloom (Wanted game and The Darkness 2) who voice of Nightcrawler Elite.
Perseus Mandate was one of those games that I looked at and went "huh...so that's a thing" and then kinda just forgot it. There are some scenes in this game that I like and one particular death that was i.m.o quite well voice acted. Sure the voice acting isn't the best in this particular expansion but I can see that they atleast tried few times. I do play this expansion after F.E.A.R. and Extraction Point whenever I decide to play through them. I don't skip this even tho many others do.
Perseus Mandate was when the series failed. And for the shades, if you play with subtitles on...when the shades hiss it throws up a "..." in the dialogue display. That right there was freakier than them coming out of nowhere.
you dont support hunting in real life? do you eat meat? if not disregard but if you eat store bought meat your supporting something alot worse then hunting my friend.
There is a massive difference between hunting exotic animals and just hunting in general. "Please don't hunt endangered species and exotic animals" is a very different statement than "I do not support hunting" I never once said I'm against hunting.
*holds finger up about to say something* ... What was it Anthony Mackie said about Zemo? "Somethin somethin-but he's right." That's what I just said about Killing Floor because it is just better zombies 😂
I hate the large number of empty areas with absolutely no enemies around. I'm like "Oh my God GIVE ME SOMETHING TO SHOOT". They give you so much ammo but barely anything to shoot.
Ngl actually do think OG FEAR looks better/has aged better visually than CoD4. At least in terms of lighting. OG non remastered CoD4 has not aged all that well visually imo.
Never played FEAR franchise (still waiting for a discount because I am a pleb), but seeing how much are the first game and Extraction Point praised and next games being so much not up to snuff makes me feel so frustrated
Perseus Mandate really feels like a bad fanmade mod. Level design is just “all rooms are a big box and throw some objects in” and the new enemies and weapons are downright uninspiring. It really feels like they just made 60% of what they wanted to make, never tested any of it, and released it to market.
I do play it on extreme difficulty cuz on top of slowmo, I also know how to break the leaning mechanic. However, that game's so long and repetitive it does leave a bad taste in my mouth after finishing it
A better question is when F.E.A.R will be backwards compatible for newer consoles? Edit: Great news, all the games are now backwards compatible and can be bought on digital stores
It’s actually possible, on Monolith’s Twitter they hinted last year that they might be looking into either remastering or making some of their older games backwards compatible. Mainly hinting at the FEAR games

At least the new soundtrack timegate added in is cool, and that one interval with chen underground was actually pretty scary to me!
Even if it is bad I still enjoy playing Perseus mandate, hey there are bad games everyone loves
Its vexx for me
Nah, it's not a bad game at all.
spider-man 3 was actually a good game though (mostly the ps2/psp/wii versions)
Just finished FEAR and don't know should i play FEAR 2? The demo was great
Perseus did explain why our character have slow mo power!
Why is there no fear remastered collection on console since we don't have backwards compat for xone or ps
These days, you could play the game on a potato. If you really want the game, get it for PC
@@DeadManSinging1 don't have pc :(
That moment you realize that Wolverine & Bloo were on your team.
That was close, i am on my first run of F.E.A.R 1 and Extraction Point and after that i was wondering if i should play Perseus Mandate. Also thanks for recommending F.E.A.R i had a lot of fun and i loved how scared i was.
It's pretty good. I loved it personally.
If I had to guess it was the crunch every studio does, they obviously did Perseus Mandate after Extraction Point, they were up against the wall, I actually get the premise about cloning Alma, what a nightmare that would be, just poorly executed
what gore mod are you using for FEAR (main game) ? 9:38
Probably just a mod that causes the effects to activate more frequently. They are there in the base game, they just never seem to activate.
Looks lile Fear Complete Edition
This was the first Fear game I'd ever played and I immediately loathed the entire series, until a year later after I played the original
This expansion is why neither is canon, it's that bad.
@@tyke2829
My good man, I realize that, but they still got riggity retconned didn't they?
@@AParticularlyConcernedCitizen I mean, FEAR 1 also had some parts that got retconned. This series didn’t have much direction in terms of story
@@tyke2829 My ILLUMINATED FELLOW, yes, it was a joke stop looking so deeply into it.
Tbh this is better than fear 3. Stil waiting for fear 3 video tho.
Fear 3 by far is the worst. The Fear expansions are a way better and closer of a experience to what Fear is compared to Fear 3. And it's made by the same people, so I'm suprised they completely lost what Fear is with Fear 3.
This game manages to look worse than HL2 despite coming out 3 years later.
well. tbh a lot of games of the time looked worse than HL2, just not the big budget ones
Perseus Mandate has terrible art direction. F.E.A.R. and Extraction Point is much better.
It may have had its flaws but I wouldn't have said no to a third FEAR 1 expansion pack personally
Thousands of time better than F.E.A.R 3
Bloody screen, so reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaal.
nah
don't get me wrong, F3AR is bad but that doesn't meat trash like PM is better
@@SpecShadow oh i will take perseus mandate anyday over fear 3. F.e.a.r 3 was an abomination
I personally enjoyed all Fear games and expansions
Just completed 2 and reborn amazing game gunplay a bit boring compared to 1 though
Doesn't make sense that you play as a random guy who has all the same reflex powers. it just makes the main character seem not special. also the mercenaries are just copies and they make the replica army feel weaker. The whole expansion feels like a Mod someone made.
The expansion was probably rushed with unfinished levels with some interesting content in between.
Doing an extreme no slow-mo run on Perseus is a complete pain in the ass. Doable, but not recommended.
To me, Gears of War created horde mode.
And did it best
The only reason to hunt is if you need the food, which living in Portland, I don't.
what crazy is for a series so well remember
this series had so much problem right from the start
MAAAA! JAREKS TALKING ABOUT FEAR AGAIN!
I'll take perseus mandate ANYDAY over f.e.a.r 2 or F.E.A.R 3.
@@PostalOverkill F.E.A.R 2 yes was indeed good. Overall a downgrade from f.e.a.r 1 but still good AND graphically still looks amazing.
Can someone explain to me the plot of fear 1 because i started it yesterday on xbox 360 and im so confused on what’s going on

I gladly will choose FEAR 1 and its expansion ls over everything that comes after them. FEAR 2 shouldn't have even been about Alma it should have been a new story on Point Man's next mission
is it possible to to play fear multiplayer online ?
I love when that mech falls from the ceiling scene. I played it first when I was 10 back in the days and I was so fucking scared I quit the game immediately haha
Speaking of Steve Blum, what’s your opinion on Ace Combat?
Legit had to cheat just to even beat this game, when I didn't have to with the main game and Extraction Point. That really says something.
Evidently, TimeGate put a skeleton crew in charge of this particular expansion compared to Extraction Point since they were also hard at work on Section 8 which was set for release the following year after Perseus Mandate.
Who knows maybe nightcrawlers are arnold scl Schwarzenegger clones.
I need to go back and play through Fear and at least extraction point. I played through the original Fear back in the day on 360, but I got the itch to give it a go again on the highest difficulty. And do the expansions.
Fear 1 has some exclusive PS3 story dlc if your brave enough to play it...
@@WllKiedSnake same as X360 but the PS3 version is the worst one in all points. worse res, framerate, inferior bonus mission and a shitty auto-shotgun with a completely broken reload animation.
@@Phantron It's the same game but inferior?... This doesn't make sense. One cannot be the same but inferior? I just want him to play it because it's a shit port but with some extra story stuff. I know it's bad. That's my point.
@@WllKiedSnake the version is worse, I told you the points above
the X360 version is the console version to go
@@Phantron I said it was a bad Version? That's why I dared him to play it. It does have a story expansion that's exclusive to PS3 though. So it's worth looking at.
At least the F.E.A.R trilogy is way better than today's games, for real its trash compare to fear..
Nightcrawler elites used to piss me off
Top notch censorship. Well done!
I would love to see Jarek critique "Cry of Fear" definitely has its issues and annoying campaign moments but goodness what a great HL1Mod and some good unsettling moments as well.
I agree i just finished Perseus Mandate and things i'm impressed with are
Ghost and Spooky moment and Feelings that they trying to separate me with my team
But Nightclawers are sooooooo frustrated and Nightclawers big guy(Elite) is weirdly fast i don't enjoy
fighting with them
And last boss i fought him 2 times (He stick to the wall and Brust my ass open with grenades) 2nd time right after i spawn i set my traps and sticky bomb right where he will jump down and kill him easily it's so boring at least the last fight is fun
And my first thought is this guy (who im playing) shouldn't have Slow mo.
When it comes to Steve Blum I just call whatever character in any game I hear him as as tank
Steve Blum is the reason I'll only play metro in russian.
0:50 But can I be a dentist and hunt Lions in Africa?
Lmao @ hl scientist yell censor bleeps, Jarek
Perseus Mandate was when the series failed.
And for the shades, if you play with subtitles on...when the shades hiss it throws up a "..." in the dialogue display. That right there was freakier than them coming out of nowhere.
The first game/expansions run horribly on my rig for some reason 2080/9700k 32gb ram, guessing some old games don't work good on modern hardware?
Try Logitech mouse fix
still think FEAR 2 is great, personally.
F.E.A.R. 2 is an overall better experience then Perseus Mandate
F.E.A.R. 1 is better then both of them imo
@@dirgeisdead8141 I agree to an extent. I find FEAR 2 to be enjoyable as something different from FEAR 1, with it's own strengths.
you dont support hunting in real life? do you eat meat? if not disregard but if you eat store bought meat your supporting something alot worse then hunting my friend.
There is a massive difference between hunting exotic animals and just hunting in general.
"Please don't hunt endangered species and exotic animals" is a very different statement than "I do not support hunting"
I never once said I'm against hunting.
I knew I wasn’t alone loving FEAR multiplayer. I have almost all achievements for it on 360 but the community died
Well the maps look bad because they are basically unfinished or made by a complete amateur

I hate the large number of empty areas with absolutely no enemies around. I'm like "Oh my God GIVE ME SOMETHING TO SHOOT". They give you so much ammo but barely anything to shoot.
Now the fun starts....
Jarek what do you think of far cry 6 gameplay
Have you ever play Bioshock series
My steam version of Persius Mandate crashed halfway through and I couldn't play it fully.
Ngl actually do think OG FEAR looks better/has aged better visually than CoD4. At least in terms of lighting. OG non remastered CoD4 has not aged all that well visually imo.
the best game to provide us best ai at that time.... even today we gives example of fear AI ...
i wish fear would come back
Just wait for trepang2 instead
I still think this is better than any of the FEAR sequels lol.
Never played FEAR franchise (still waiting for a discount because I am a pleb), but seeing how much are the first game and Extraction Point praised and next games being so much not up to snuff makes me feel so frustrated
Maybe try a third party retailer. The original fear is quite stellar.
However, that game's so long and repetitive it does leave a bad taste in my mouth after finishing it
I’ve played all fear game still haven’t beaten 1 cause I suck at it but I beat fear 2 and fear3 I like fear2 a lot
Hahaha they do Sound like Arnold when they die I never noticed when I played this so many years ago on my 360 xD
Just beat it without slow-mo (mostly), real fun.
Oh god how bad is the final boss... Artificial difficult without any sense.
