  • How to remove and replace a broken sway bar link. Dodge Caravan 96-07 Chrysler Town and Country
    Tools Needed:
Screw driver or pry bar to remove hub caps.
Socket & Wrench to remove wheel lug nuts.
Metric Set of Wrenches / 18mm (preferably long handle for good torque).
Allen wrenches (possibly needed for replacement sway bar link)
Grease gun (lubricate new Sway Bar Links)
Jack life & Jack stands, Wood to chock rear wheels.
Propane or MAP gas torch to remove stubborn parts.
Wheel grinder (air or electric) to remove seized lower bolt.
Alternatively a Reciprocating saw can be used rather than cutting wheel.

    Dude,
I'd share a bay with you any day.
You got commonsense and a sense of humor.
Both keys to being a successful mechanic.
Just a simple flick of the wrist here, flick, ummm, gimme a minute here.

A genuine rust belt mechanic! Heat wrench, penetrating oil, and pry bars.
Nicely done guy... you have more patience than I do. I used to live in Michigan and had to deal with that exact kind of rusty junk. That's why I don't turn wrenches for a living and why I live in Wyoming now. I do have to replace my sway bar link on my 2005 Grand Caravan, but I suspect it will be much easier that what you had to deal with.

There are many ways to remove the bolt, This video demonstrated the use of heat, and as a last ditch effort, grinding wheel. Many vehicles in the rust belt (we're in ohio) get parts so corroded that the wrench is not always effective. When this is the case other means of part removal are implemented.
I am thankful for my buddy to take the time to do it the hard way (at my request) so as to assist anyone whom might be in a scenario where the traditional wrench is non-effective.

Great video; I had most of the same problems on a 96 T&C driven 20 years in MA. I sawed the bottom link off with a Sawzall, and it left a shoulder of the bolt I had to grind off. I was able to get a 4 1/2 inch grinder in without removing the tie bar end. The ride is significantly improved; I have 210,000 miles on the T&C and I have replaced the whole front end now--drives like it has about 80K on it.

Sawzall (metal blade) might have been the weapon of choice on that bottom link bolt! I always believe less is more. Hit that easy button!!!!!!

You can lower the sway bar end onto a jackstand and it will position it so a rachet/air rachet can be used eliminating all the extra disassembly. Makes it about a 40 minute job total eithout any air tools.

Studs have 2 flat spots on them for back-up wrench. look at the new ones. Use loc-tite on reasembly. 20 minute job without power or flame MechVid is a flat rate tool.

great video. By any chance to you have to jack up both sides of the vehicle to neutral the weight on the front end?

hey quick question I just replaced the sway bar on my 96 Chrysler town and country because it broke from the top part and I notice there was something wrong when the van started shaking a lot after 40mph+ so I replaced it and the bar ripped the ABS cable next to it and I just left it like that just replaced the sway bar link. I still have brakes abs lights on but the van still shakes a lot feels like the tire will come of, did lined up and balcg. still shakes... whats your advice?

Don't waste your time doin it this way. The rusty thread can be a real pain and VERY time consuming
Get a side grinder (or even better a mini side grinder)
cover the CV boot with something (if you accidentally slip)
1: cut of the 2 bolts with the side grinder
2: screw the new sway bar link in place
3: all done in like 10 minutes
