Sean Coetzee It’s not that he died that we don’t like. It’s HOW he died. It was as if they tried to kill him as quickly as possible. He would never trust strangers enough to reveal his name. And it’s not like Joel is a unique name. What if some random survivor named Joel happened to run into them before?

To make you feel like ellie. Full of hate for abby. It drives you through the first part of the game. But then lets you walk a mile in abby's( likeable or not) shoes.(That's why I believe the game is so divisive by the way.)

If I come up to you and say my name is "john" that doesn't mean I trust you. He anyways just gave his first name after tommy gave it to abby in the first place so abby knew it was him after knowing it's tommy.
@@seancoetzee5399 Joel is not the kind of guy who would put himself and Tommy in such a compromising situation. And why bother rescuing Abby in the first place? This guy literally abandoned a family on the side of the road in the first game. He doesn't care about others, he only cares about himself and the people he cares about.
The game hedged the bet that it could get the audience to sympathize with Abby. To me and many players (not all), it didn't work. They should have let us make the decision in the game to carry out the deed - after all those people Ellie killed (some of whom had no part in the death of Joel), why would she stop at the one responsible for it?
Berleezy's reaction to Jesse's death was perfect. Comedic but still heart shattering and anger still wrapped into it.
I feel like not a lot of people react enough from his death but hey he is a new character. Personaly i was seeing RED 😂

The saddest part of the game is that Ellie in the end was what she feared the most, in the first game she said her biggest fear was being alone and through her obsession with getting revenge for loosing someone who meant the most to her she lost everyone she’d ever cared about and ended up with no one.
Yeah she choose Revenge rather than her family she had. And now the result she got. Is that her nightmare has come true. She’s alone.
not enough people connect this. If more ppl did, regardless of how they feel about Abby, they'd understand it all. No one is good, no matter how attached to anyone in this game we are.
@@tsarnicholasii6679 That's where the narrative falls apart. They go out of their way to try to reinforce the idea that vengeance is wrong, but Abby GETS her revenge and walks away in the end. Ellie loses it all. That and the pacing did not do this game any favours. Had you gotten to know Abby a bit more, you might have seen her side of it a bit better. Oh, she's still an awful human being (for those that start screaming about Joel, YES, I know he was far, far, FAR from being in the right; however, we got to know him, and we got to see what set him on his path) but her sadism makes her different (Joel was ruthless, NOT sadistic...he took no pleasure in the dirty biz he was involved in). Better pacing and some shifting of narrative points make this work better and at least make Abby's POV more appealing rather than dismissed outright due to her less-than-palatable traits popping up so regularly.
@@thedarkstarr11 Abby took pleasure killing her father killer. Joel would have done the same to sara killer if he could. She was not a worse person than Ellie or Joel. She lost all her friend and her lover too. The other guys said they were not good people but that is subjective. For us what happen to Joel is a pity because we know them. For everyone else who would learn what joel has did and stop a chance of a cure , he would be the worst son of b... on earth plus he killed many people. Maybe some of them were bad but not all of them. Ellie took her revenge on dozen of people but Abby on killed Joel. Plus Abby was not really taking pleasure really because when she took Joel life she felt bad a bit like how ellie felt after torturing Nora. The problem with people is that they believe that there is a good side and one is bad and the other isn't. They are both equally bad.

Tbh, Jesse wasn't that important of a character in the game. I didn't care about him as much as Ellie's story and Abby's story. His death reminded me of Manny when Tommy shot him. But I do kind of wish they killed him in a different less anticlimactic way though.

Right??? I routed for ellie the entire game. Even up to this point. The game made sure it’s audience didn’t give a FUCK about Abby, and even hated her from the very beginning, why would anyone care if she dies? It makes no sense…

This game made me so exhausted. The cycle of violence. They designed the story to make us have mixed feelings. By the time of the final fight,we just wanted them to stop. It was really mentally and emotionally exhausting.

@@darryljack6612 No, it sounds like a insane stretch to say she wouldn't have gained closure if she killed Abby, it's one thing to say realized she wouldn't gain much of anything by killing Abby. But finding closure in itself is something between her and her memory of Joel. You don't neccesarily need to forgive someone for something horrible they did to eventually gain acceptance and closure. Pretty sure the vast majority of trauma inflicted on people by violent criminals don't make it a point to forgive jack shit but still move on if and when they can (sure as hell know i did). Tying that to a single act of letting the perpetrator go seems insulting to me personally at least. (Your mileage may vary, but i hope you get what i'm trying to say).
As for the "cycle of vengeance" that has been shot in the foot already by the stories own narrative, what makes you think it has stopped?
Ellie and Abby both have killed dozens upon dozens of people over the course of the game, and if some random guy's daughter could go questing for revenge what makes you think the like 200 other folks family killed over the course of the game couldn't? It's already established that the reason for killing doesn't matter in the narrative, be it defense or self-defense, but the act itself.
As for Lev specifically, yeah kill him too, done, that's how you really end it. Not like the story basically didn't already tell as such with letting Ellie and Tommy live to seek vengeance in the first place.
Grizzly Melon What even IS the message of the game? It can’t be that killing in of itself is wrong, since any well-adjusted human being should know that, and both this and the first game are all about having fun killing NPCs. It can’t be that killing for revenge is wrong, since it’s such an arbitrary motivation to demonize in the story’s lawless world where people kill for less all the time, especially when the major characters already have blood on their hands. It can’t be that mercy is the best course of action, since there are so few times when mercy is even an option, and mercy is what got all of Abby’s friends killed in the first place. It can’t be that forgiving one person equates to forgiving the one that they harmed, since that makes no fucking sense. It can’t be that forgiving one person’s mistakes allows you to forgive yourself, since those are two entirely separate things. It certainly can’t be that killing all witnesses and tying up loose ends is the solution, since...well I mean, of course it would have ended the cycle of vengeance on two separate occasions, but...that’s too fucked up to be intentional.
I mean, sure, MAYBE some of these are meant to be the messages, but...the writers couldn’t possibly think THAT little of us, right? *RIGHT!? **_OH SHI-_*

They are definitely the villain that game, Marlene was the only person Joel killed that was unacceptable due to what Marlene said in tlou 2, the fireflies killed innocent people, adults and kids, Ellie was gonna die for a cure that wouldn't exist, that's simple, and if they did get the cure from Ellie, then they would have used it not to save the world, but control it by using it as leverage, fireflies weren't good at all, you cant justify it, Joel just saved many lives more then Ellie.

I don’t think anybody comprehends just how clever that first fight between Abby and Ellie is. The tension through the fucking roof.

@@msampson2286 Had the game not been spoiled, it would have achieved what it did with most players. The fact is, had the fight been Ellie vs Abby, it’s just Ellie vs David and the outcome is predictable. The David fight is scary alright, but you knew she would either survive against him, or Joel would swoop in and kill him. Either way, Ellie was NOT dying. But up to this point in 2, we’ve seen Joel, Jessie and - we thought - Tommy die. Then it throws you into Abby’s shoes for this boss fight. First of all, you really don’t want to play further, but you’re also intrigued to see how it goes down, so you play further. Some of the cleverest ways of creating a sense of dread, because you’re still mostly on Ellie’s side anyway by this point. You’re still not meant to be taken with Abby. You’ve essentially seen her strive for redemption, but it shows the actual ugliness of it. Her story is pretty much the same as Joel’s only the horrors Joel committed were never seen so his redemption was easier to digest. Abby’s story is tougher to digest because she killed a beloved character to us, but we’re seeing the real ugliness of that need to redemption.
Yeah I disagree. Playing through hours of random side plots with Abby felt tedious and I was hoping whatever happened the game would just end lol.

The thing is Abby at that point in the game was "Joel" doing everything to save Ellie... Abby was doing everything to protect Lev. When Ellie let's go of Abby she says "take him" she realized Abby was lev's Joel. Hence the flashblit to the last "happy" moment together...everything is so on point in this game .. they don't explain, it's up to the gamer to realize all the nuances

I love seeing these passionate reactions. It goes to show that people are really invested in these characters. I actually loved the game because of how jarring and visceral it was. It was actually very refreshing that they didn't play it safe. I can definitely see why people don't like it but for me it was great game.
by the end of the game, i was glad the cycle of endless ‘i need revenge’ ended. it was so exhausting, so fucking draining emotionally and mentally. it took such a toll on me and those who deeply love and appreciate these characters who just get hurt repeatedly.

That vision of Joel while Ellie was drowning Abby is heartbreakingly brilliant. It was that moment when Ellie realized that the last words she said to Joel (last scene) showed that she never really forgive Joel before he died and she regretted it (her words are “I don’t think I can ever forgive you for what you did, but I would like to try). To get through the pain, she compensated that regret by impliedly forgiving Abby, in the same way that Abby tried to compensate her regrets of not being able to save her dad by saving Lev and Yara. At the end of the day, Abby and Ellie are the same - - - both are being haunted by the trauma and grief (note stages of grief) of losing someone and both are trying to live with it, possibly in a most brutal way. At the end of the day, they’re just both daughters who lost their fathers.
I actually see the ending slightly differently, but very similarly. I don't think Ellie forgave Abby, but rather I think that moment showed that Ellie finally forgave Joel. This is foreshadowed throughout the game, starting with the flashback in Salt Lake City, when Ellie told Joel that her life would have mattered, but he stole that from her. I think a lot of the game was her struggling with the fact that he was gone and she didn't have an opportunity to forgive him for what happened. Though perhaps, Ellie forgives both Joel and Abby in that moment, but I tend to lean towards Joel. Either way, both Ellie's and Abby's revenge cost them everything - friends, family, loved ones - and Ellie realized enough was enough.
You summarised everything I felt in my play through. I gotta be honest though initially when I started playing as Abby in seatle I hated the game, I even skipped 2 days and didn't play it. Then eventually when I started I understood Abby, at the same time I was connected to Ellie and Joel. Didn't get that connection with Abby but I understood her. And I think that's what the creators wanted, the game was still about Ellie. And that finale is one of the best maybe controversial but beat ending I have ever seen in anything

it’s quite interesting to see everyone’s perspective change once they learn both sides of the story and come to an understanding why the characters did what they had to do or at least what they felt was right to them these are the kind of games I like because it’s all based on beliefs and morals and I like hearing peoples opinions as long as they are open minded about it.
I think these video is very one sided there are a lot of people who would prefer abby dying like pewdipie that didnt liked the end also I include myself Joel and if Joel was in that position he would have killed her in my opinion.

She's poorly written in the sense thats shes pushed upon you and you're expected to like her, which they attempt to do in flashbacks and other things of the such, which works for some people, but others still felt as if she wasn't very fleshed out or detailed, and many weren't able to empathize with her. Along with this, she becomes quite a morally questionable character. Her drive to kill Joel was understandable in a sense, but while following Ellie she doesnt become much better than her, and kills a good deal of people without remorse, evening planning to willingly kill Dina after discovering she was pregnant. Ellie questions her choices constantly throughout the game, feeling remorse and attempting to avoid killing when possible, as we see when she encounters Abby's friends, who typically give her little choice, while Abby willingly kills anyone who gets in her way, seeming to enjoy it in a sense.
