I compared both a 2021 QX50 Sensory and a 2020 RDX A-Spec before buying the Infiniti. Everyone talks about the “slow” acceleration performance of this car, but it’s the same or quicker than an RDX A-spec and gets better fuel economy. Not to mention it looks much more upscale inside and out than the RDX (IMO), and has more cargo room. Again beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think the QX50 will age much better than the RDX … especially the interior design. I prefer the Infiniti sound system, but that’s a close fight. That said, it doesn’t have that track pad controller for the infotainment system that drives me up the wall! I’ll give the RDX a better grade for sporty handling, but IMO that is really the only place it wins. It has a traditional auto, but with so many gears I found it hunting for a sweet spot too often. So that’s a wash vs. CVT. To each their own but I’m happy with my choice.
I think that if Infinity wants to stick to CVTs, it could benefit from a similar system used by Toyota which includes a physical 1st gear and then switches to CVT for the rest of the range. This would mitigate the issue you pointed out with acceleration.

Great job Alex on comparing it to its biggest rival, the Acura RDX. Happy you went into great scintillating the two. No luxury car should have a CVT and that really hurts the engine here. Love this car ,I have been driving one since September 2019 ,it’s a very comfortable quiet easy on gas type of a cross over,10 thousand miles later ,wouldn’t trade it for anything else ,I have taken 2 3000 mile trips and it’s one of most comfortable vehicles I have driven and I have owned a few ,the one gripe I have is Infiniti should have offered the same power train as in the Q60 for the more aggressive driver.
I can't believe you did not compare this vehicle to the RDX. Bought a RDX on your recommendation and love it. Beats this vehicle in almost every segment of comparison.

Unproven engine? It's been out for 3 years now and have been very few reports of issues, its long-term reliability in 5-6 years is still unknown but it is designed to replace the VQ35 motor which accounts for a massive number of the sales in Nissan's fleet. Do you want pure aggressive sports car performance with total reliability good luck to you, go for something different. If you want smooth easy going comfort at a reasonable price and a touch of class. I would repeat the car tester above who seems as confused as you when he said. I think this is one of the sharpest looking vehicles, both inside and out, in its class. The failure, as you point out, is the CVT/engine combo. CVTs are synonymous with efficiency - something that luxury car buyers do not place a high priority on. Infiniti needs to pair that slick engine with a better transmission to make the QX50 more competitive.
Have a 2016 QX50 with 28,000 km in my garage. Pretty much a 370Z with a jacked-up suspension and AWD, 3.7 litre V6, 325 HP. 2020 new model isn't even close to what it was, doesn't have leather standard equipment, costs approx $10,000 more with a couple of extra safety features plus a slush-box transmission.
@@KTAC1 No they're working on replacing the QX60, not QX70. Infiniti dropped the QX70 because it was sort of competing with the QX50 for sales, and the QX50 was winning, hence why there still isn't a new QX70
This is a great video, and I love the new graphics used. The vehicle however seems like a major disappointment. Personally I think they finally nailed the looks, but lost it on the powertrain. When I heard CVT, it lost all credibility. And this VC engine seems pointless when looking at the numbers. Just do what Mercedes does and use 2.0 liter engines that are really built up to use more boost. Those get great efficiency in comparison. With this VC engine, you might as well have used a V6 or heck even a V8.
Infiniti absolutely nailed this little SUV! They really created a unique look with the combination of angular and aggressive exterior styling and elegant, flowing interior styling. Excellent color and materials choices as well. It’s nice to see them finally updating their infotainment and integrating better technology practices in their vehicles. Very strong contender for the money, for sure!
Alex, thanks for the very thorough and informative video. I have a 2019 QX50 and find it very responsive, even from a dead stop going uphill. I usually drive it in sport mode and the difference is noticable. It's very quick and pulls away from the surrounding cars with ease and without straining. I do find the interior noisier than I would like, but I think that's due mainly to the CVT. Prior to the QX50 I had the Q50 sedan and the QX50 is quicker and gets better milage. Long term I'm not thrilled with the CVT since I've heard they're prone to problems after 3-5 years. Wish they'd move to a standard transmission and away from the CVT.
I appreciate the fancy graphics. The only improvements I suggest is getting rid of animation on the information panel. It was so distracting that I missed what you were talking about. One more; the trim information is already busy, adding background image just makes it less legible. If you have to have it, make it super low contrast so the text stands out. As far as QX50, you lost me at no spare tire. You are still the best on the tube.
Thanks Alex.. Great review.. My take. This QX suffers from the same BAD trend of making the stance very low. This looks more like a hatchback, than SUV. I like to sit up higher (much higher). But I do really like the simple, clear, easy to read instrument cluster with physical dials for Tacho and speedo. Much better than the terrible "newer" instrument cluster designs that manufactures are coming out with. The rest of the dashboard is disappointing.. since you basically have two LCD screens to controls things. Just sticking to simple, clear physical (oversized) knobs and physicals control of 15 - 20 years ago - would have been much better.
I think the best compact SUV (sudo lux) deal is the GMC Terrain. Stickers for 42k you can get it for 33-34k and it has most of all the cool bells and whistles.
I am tired of car manufacturers twisting the data around to show how economical the CVTs are. As usual, there is more details and they are just choosing the ones that fit their agenda. The torque in a CVT (the pulley and belt type) is transferred by a very small layer of lubricant between the pulley and the belt. For constant speed and engine revs scenario, it is not as efficient as AT with a clutch inside the torque converter, standard manual or dual-clutch trans. CVTs also have a lower gear ratio, which is comfortably omitted during all the hype. I personally like the way CVT drive, if they connected to an engine that is strong enough. I do not care about the lack of gear shifts. Saying that I drive a lot in the mountains with my family and CVT does great there. It does wine during engine breaking but I do not care much. Reliability is frighting to me though. For steady long distances on the motorway, CVT is not as good as it is sold.
Great looking vehicle but I wouldn’t buy it specifically because of the CVT. I’ve had it in the past and absolutely loathe them. Does nothing but cheapen what could be a great automobile. I’ll stick with the RDX.
If I were shopping in this segment, I would take you with me to the lot. Auto and truck designs offer too many trade offs. You always feel like you have been shortchanged in losing one option against gaining another. As the model designs go through their life cycle, the manufacturers move the options adding and subtracting even between trim levels. Choosing a vehicle has become more confusing than tax law.
I am a huge fan of Alex and his reviews. But this one missed a few important things: 1. He completely missed to compare it to one of the best SUVs in this segment, the RDX. 2. He ignored the outdated screens and skipped the whole topic. 3. He didn’t mention that this car doesn’t sell at all. The previous generation which was 6 year old model sold more than the brand new/redesigned QX50. He should have explained why? 4. At the end, he should have mentioned that the RDX outsold this car by almost 2.5 times. His information was misleading and it came across as this vehicle is comparable to the Germans and Lexus and Acura, which is far from it. Q5, GLC, RDX, NX and X3 sold ~ 60K units last year vs 25-30K QX50. Who agrees?
@@idreesmohammed6828 Actually no. You are wrong. I am car guy and I point goods and bads. The RDX owners do not confirmation....the sales numbers are enough to give them confirmation :)
Lane keep only on the highest trim is a big mistake. I find this feature very helpful when driving on the highway on my accord. I’m not paying for top model just get that feature. RDX is the way to go here.
This car, with a diesel or hybrid could of saved infiniti in Europe, but we didn't get to see it. Infiniti pulled out of Europe in March 2020, which is a shame, as car people respect the brand, but small minded car shoppers only buy a car that their friends can't afford, always with a German badge. The q50 AWD hybrid seems to be the perfect car for everyone, yet no one in the UK bought one. Their are currently only 4 used ones available in the UK, and I hope that one of them will be on my drive soon.

Yes, an in dash CD player!!!!!!
Excellent informative video. Thanks for taking your time to.post and share.
2:50 Useful , especially for European customers!! Another great review !!
I love cvt
I am a huge fan of Alex and his reviews. But this one missed a few important things:
Who agrees?
The screens have a new processor and updated software for 2020. They are quick and smooth.
@@LitfinA Fair enough. But i have mentioned 4 valid points with data and Alex ignored all of them.
Looks like you are an RDX owner and need some
Confirmation 😂
@@idreesmohammed6828 Actually no. You are wrong. I am car guy and I point goods and bads. The RDX owners do not confirmation....the sales numbers are enough to give them confirmation :)
Xc60 for the win!
Apple car play or Android Auto are a must..Infinti engine is not bad but no hybrid option
Lane keep only on the highest trim is a big mistake. I find this feature very helpful when driving on the highway on my accord. I’m not paying for top model just get that feature. RDX is the way to go here.
We have the choice between 2023 Infiniti qx50 top trim and the Volvo xc60, Volvo being a bit more pricey, what would you recommend?
Thanks
This car was not previously a FX model. It was a previous model named the EX.
Love that the car does not have a start/stop system!
Love the Volvo XC60. But the Alfa Stelvio is such a gorgeous beast. A tie.
Excellent job on this video. We’re looking into this exact market and your comprehensive breakdown on the QX50 answered several of our questions. Thanks!
Great interior quality but the design and infotainment system needs some work. Also, get rid of the CVT or switch suppliers Nissan! Also who thought it was a good idea to remove headlight controls from the wheel stocks????
Why is there a tire iron if there’s no spare....
wild nfl to beat people with 🙈🙈🙈🙈
You still have to change run flats after an issue. Also balancing, rotating, regular maintenance, etc.
Stopped when I read CVT
Guess Infiniti will never update their lineup now since the Coronovirus is out and no one will be able to afford these anymore
Great work Alex as always love your videos ❤️
Great review. Like the new graphics.
Run flat tires, CVT. Two big negatives.
@@fcex558 if you don't know how to change a tire in 15 minutes that's on you. And jenko CVTs are awful. Even our accords CVT went out at 105k when our 5 speed auto accord went to 270k. Same mpg too. You must own a Sentra or something and are getting defensive
“ENDLESS MONEY PIT” -Scotty
Scotty is a bit silly most of the time. Poorly based opinions aren't improved simply because he's crazy too.
Anything with a CVT gets thrown off my shopping list.
It is a very sharp looking design. The interior design and dash/center stack look out of place They should have mated that engine to a traditional transmission. Keep the CVT’s for the more eco focused vehicles.
why do people need so much cargo space? they go to costco everyday? they go camping every day? i dont understand that.
The infotainment system is long in the tooth and needs a major refresh. The troublesome CVT transmission is a dealbreaker for me.
Run flats..forget it
what is the issue with run flat? I have no idea
Did you text Rob back?
Always
All these people comments here are followers and never drive one. I own one and it ride smoothly and quiet cabin. Better then the 2018 Ford edge and Chevy i have.
Drop the price by 20 grand on the top trim and maybe I'll consider it with a CVT.
All the complexity with no upside... This is one of the worst powertrains in recent memory
future62 worst power trains AND worst transmissions.
You’re right. I don’t really understand the point of all this new, unproven tech when there seems to be virtually no fuel economy or performance advantage over other similar vehicles.
@@danielc3321 i mean it has pretty much the same mpg rating in the city as a rogue with 100 less hp. Motortrend has it at a 6.1 0-60 which is decent for the power and trapping 96mph. Drive it easy u get good gas mileage. Did the mpg change? I saw 24mpg city b4 with awd for 2019???
future62 Least there trying to be innovative
Daniel C What do you think innovation is......all the tech now was once new tech.
Great review but FYI the comparison section was mono audio. Only can hear in the left speaker of my headphones.
Infiniti lost its way.
Agree, I own a 2008 G35. I don't think they have made a car as cool since.
I also owned a 07 m35. These cars had a wonderful presence then they named them all q. Who went Q Q? I don't know what I'm looking at. If you mention some Q to me I can't envision it.
@@cavemankiwi The G35 was epic. Infiniti has been moving away from performance in recent years. They have an identity crisis and they don't were multiple hats well. The Genesis G70 is what the Q50 should have been by now.
Drop the CVT omg..... give this a real 8 speed and adaptive shocks
Sorry but no manufacturer selling any car over 15K use should ever drop down to downgrade their car with any form of CVT!!!
This is 40K vehicle and it is totally unacceptable to use cheap cost savings CVT here ....no look from me.
@alexonautos - I am curious of the brand of run flat tires used in this vehicle since you mentioned they were pretty quiet. I have a 2011 RAV4 Sport V6 that will need new tires by year end, thank you.
I have been following your work since TTAC, excellent as always.
Yay! More cvt!
YAYYYY
Excellent review
Is the infotainment controls near the gear selector meant for the passenger? Just seems pretty far away for the driver to use.
This youngster says "You get a snazzier cabin than most of the competition for less and it's bundled with a big back seat and large cargo area. The QX50 has the looks to win and is the most comfortable and quietest and is surprisingly efficient." So why do so many equally naive respondents throw mud at this classy and comfortable new Nissan product???
