      Have you tried playing youtube videos from a PC via the HDMI connections on the RZ50? I'm having to send mine back because the videos start then 4 seconds later the sound kicks in. If I pause then restart the video I get the same delay before the sound starts. Curious if this is a widespread issue or if I just got a bad one. If everybody else is having the same issue I'll give up on ordering another one from a different source.

    Thank you for this great comparison tip. However, I found that the info needs couple correction. For example, RZ70 has 2 subwoofers controlled independently. The Crutchfield has revised the comparison for the subwoofer as of now. Also, I would highlight that Auro 3D upmixing is there in RZ70 as an optional update, which is not shown in the Crutchfield comparison.

    $2800 for the RZ70 with an amplifier section that can only garner a THX Select certification? That's just sad. Buy an RZ50 and a separate 11 channel amplifier and you will have a better system. If the independent sub out is your thing, a Mini-dsp DDRC-24 will help you there too. You can probably buy an RZ-50, separate amp, and DDRC-24 for less than the price of an RZ70.

      Doesn’t look like it can do either of those scenarios while simultaneously bi-amping, according to Page 132 of the manual.
      Bi-amping defaults to “no” when two sets of height channels are used (so it won’t work with 5.1.4). And also “no” when a Zone 2 has been set up.

  • @GlassWolfLH
    @GlassWolfLH 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    If you're powering your speakers externally, use an Integra control amp, instead of an Onkyo amplified receiver. You're paying for features you're not using, but that still add more THD (which isn't as simple, or clear-cut as you imply.) Also, if you do use internal power, just look at the difference in the amplifiers inside of the receivers to see what you're paying for. It's not just the power rating, but the build quality, type of amp, etc. This is why a Pass Labs class-A amplifier will cost a lot more than an Emotiva class A/B of the same "power rating (RMS.) Sure, the RZS50 is cheaper, and offers a lot of the same features, which make it a better bargain. PS, Crutchfield is ALWAYS overpriced, and charge MSRP for everything. I can buy an RZ50 right now, BNIB for about $800 by just shopping around a llittle.

      @@ealanosborne Indeed, other than the physical dimensions required when implementing all outboard amps as you noted, the RZ50 suddenly looks like one hellaciously great value as a processor alone.
      First world problems 😂

      Oh, and final note - in Canada, the RZ50 is still available at $2200, while the RZ70 is $4200 (Gibbys - sorta our mini-Canuck Crutchfield😂) Yes, those are Canadian pesos, but even at current exchange rate of, let’s say .75, that’s a major delta.

    The RZ50 got very bad measurments results on ASR, which drove off the RZ70. I ended up getting the Denon X4800H instead. I only have two subwoofers, but as soon as Dirac ART or Bass Control becomes an option for Denon, I'll consider getting at least a third sub.

      The RZ50's poor measurements on ASR was for its amplifier section. The SINAD score was actually better for the preamp section of the RZ50 than the Denon X3800H.

    HDMI Sub and main comes in handy if you have a TV and a projector in the same room. One difference (and an important one) you didn't talk about is the weight difference between the RZ50 (30.9lbs) and the RZ70 (48.5lbs). There may simply be better quality components inside other than just the extra amp channels and 2 optical and coax inputs :)

      @@marconista5390 The lighter weight comes from the use of class-D "digital" amplification these days (ala Pioneer Elite) versus older larege toroidal transformers to drive big class A/B amplification channels. When I was looking to upgrade my Sony AVR, I was looking at the X4700H, and read rumors of the RZ70/RZ90 on Audio Science Review. With the big success of the RZ50, I thought I'd wait for the RZ70 and I could see it being about $2K. Ended up getting sticker shocked at the insane cost the RZ70 and I just got the X4700H after all. I wish it had Dirac, but there are ways around that, and I got Auro. Eventually I'll end up with an HTP-1, most likely in a few years.

      And of course in those few years time the landscape will change yet again. For some use cases - let’s say maybe septuagenarian or beyond boomers ( the cohort in which my date of birth places me) with no gaming or even physical media requirements - WISA or some likely successor may make enough technical headway to be a viable alternative. Depending on room layout, even advanced wireless connectivity sound bars / multichannel systems such as the Nak Dragon could be very attractive for those less than anal about surfing the bleeding edge of FOMO.
      I’d still be inclined towards physical discrete in ceilings for the overhead effects bubble, which as much as I’m not a fan of all of their speakers I’ve heard so far, Sonos’ ecosystem delivers great flexibility.
      No amount of power, signal processing/EQ or number of speaker channels will obviate the need to get the room dialed in first; for most of us there’s always some compromise - it’s just a matter of pick your poison.

      @mikeortiz2139 I actually started out with the Onkyo TX-RZ50, I purchased it from Audio Advice when it was still listed at $1399... However, I had a very difficult time with the Dirac Live software and was unable to optimize the calibration curves that I was expecting... When contacting Audio Advice for tech support, I could never reach anybody through phone support, despite leaving numerous voice messages... I also contacted Onkyo technical support as well, but they also weren't able to provide any real support... Unfortunately, as much as I was hoping the experience with the RZ50 would meet my expectations, I was very disappointed, to say the very least, but mostly because of my negative experience with Dirac Live...
      Needless to say, I ended up returning the Onkyo TX-RZ50 back to Audio Advice within the 30-day return policy... I also found out months later after returning the RZ50, I came across several TH-cam videos that recommend purchasing the Mini DSP Umik-1 when running the Dirac Live software, but unfortunately, I wasn't aware of that at the time and assumed running the Dirac Live software with the included puck mic from Onkyo would be compatible, but I found out the hard way the included puck mic is only compatible with the Dirac Live basic version which is built-in with the receiver...At any rate, I was also very disappointed with the Dirac Live automatic built-in function as well...
      Fast forward, I went on to purchase the Denon AVR-X4700H directly from Denon which had a sale price of $1299 just prior to being discontinued before the release of the new Denon AVR-X3800H and AVR-X4800H receivers... What I found stands out from Denon over Onkyo is my Denon AVR-X4700H includes 2 independent subwoofer outputs whereas the Onkyo RZ50 dual sub outputs are not independent from one another...
      I also had a much more pleasant experience with setting up and running Audyssey room correction over Dirac Live, as it was much easier to understand the interface whether running the automatic version directly through the AVR-X4700H or optional Audyssey MultEQ-X app software for giving end users greater control over calibration parameters and more detailed information about their room acoustics.
      In the end, I've been very pleased with the Denon AVR-X4700H during the past 2 years and in my honest opinion, it provides the best bang for the buck performance over the competition, hands down and offers more features!

    AR's review of the RZ50 is what helped me make up my mind. Also, as you've pointed out, it's the best bang for the buck on a receiver WITH pre-outs. My basement theater is 'on hold' so I decided to upgrade my Den/TV room. It's currently a Yamaha 5.1 only receiver. I was looking for something to do 5.1.4 with, this one was the winner! I'm adding 4 height (on wall) channels onto the ceiling and can't wait to hear what I've been missing! The basement will be a 9.4.4 setup, so this won't be moving when I resume the basement theater. I am not sure yet whether the RZ-50 will cut it for "power", but this is a pretty small room, so I doubt I'll need to add any external amps. MAYYYYBE for the LCR speakers... but I haven't tried it without yet, so that remains to be seen..err... heard ;)

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, technically you can, but there may be unwanted issues that you’ll have to deal with, like always needing to turn on the receiver and stereo amp manually, since the DH190 in particular doesn’t have a trigger input to automatically turn on when the receiver turns on, like a true external amp would have.
      Also there’s the volume difference - having to match the volumes of each unit - and unwanted audio processing that the stereo receiver might add to the signal, unless the stereo amp has a “pure direct” mode, adding no processing whatsoever.
      In a pinch, it’s okay, but not advised. I sometimes use a Peachtree Nova300 in my system because it’s a stereo integrated amp that has “home theater bypass” mode which integrates seamlessly into a larger system, and also has a trigger input.

    I'll explain how I personally use the MAIN/SUB HDMI outputs. I have both connected to the same tv. My dumb TCL tv doesn't have 4k@120Hz on the eARC HDMI port, so I use the MAIN as eARC only and all video output routed out of SUB to a 4k@120hz hdmi port on the tv. Things get pretty wonky when you do this. I had to disable CEC to make this work because I end up in a black screen loop with the avr and tv switching endlessly.

    Does the RZ50 have subwoofer outputs?

      2 of them, yes. 🙌

      The RZ50 does include dual subwoofer outputs, but they are NOT independant outputs!

    we got the lg c1. got it at a discount. Ultra low price. At some place.
    They said the z50 is the one to get. Well one with 8k connections. The TV is a 4k 120 TV. Kinda weird.
    Trying to save money here. The receiver came out years ago and still cost almost 2 grand. whats up. onkyo went out of business.

    The rz70 has discrete subwoofer outputs

    • @fonkenful

      If you don’t mind a bit of futzing around behind the curtain, you can probably achieve similar or even more flexible multiple subwoofer control with a miniDSP2x4HD for a shit ton less money than the difference in cost these two models.
      There is no such thing as future proof.

      @@fonkenful This is the exact path I took: TX-RZ50 plus miniDSP2x4HD and its still $1k less than a RZ70. There is a bit of a learning curve with the miniDSP but the results are worth it. Definitely the best value in Home Theater currently 🍺

      @@askmatt7283 Have you tried playing youtube videos from a PC via the HDMI connections on the RZ50? I'm having to send mine back because the videos start then 4 seconds later the sound kicks in. If I pause then restart the video I get the same delay before the sound starts. Curious if this is a widespread issue or if I just got a bad one. If everybody else is having the same issue I'll give up on ordering another one from a different source.

    they are both so similar yet the rz 70 is close to 20 pounds heavier, 1 pound heavier per extra watt of power?? lol what is taking 10 extra pounds

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They just added some extra lead bricks in it just to add weight. 😄 J/K. Well, it does have 2 more amps and heat sinks than the RZ50. Maybe more robust amps? Hard to say.

    9:03 I had to watch 5 times over because I was so flabbergasted you skipped over the weights!!! After reading us a million specs that were all exactly the same you skipped over the weight! 🤯48.5 vs 30.9 lbs!! Huge difference bro. Power supply and amps must be substantially better on the 70. Would love to see all channels driven numbers on both units. $57.73 per pound on the 70 and 51.77 per pound for the 50. Pretty similar
    But as always bro excellent content. Your conclusions are undeniable, the 50 is a great deal and it wins the battle. I actually loled at the “Aw shucks” part

    Ealan like the channel, but could you spend some time on the HDMI motherboard problem that still plaques the receivers being sold still today! Pioneer and Onkyo tech services, seem to totally disregard the problems still exist. no handshake, drop-outs, no pass thru in standby, can not get the system setup screens. Overall just poor quality and a fair amount of consumers not happy, thanks in advance!
