I’m not sure. I’ve never had the cash to push the outer limits so my response is coloured by my budget but if this thing is under $2,000 CDN, then I’d say that’s about my point of no return. That was my price point for my Q950A system so around $2,000 for just an amp is my upper limit.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I mean my experience with the Q950A in our bedroom installation has me reflecting on perpetuating my living room AVR based system if I have a need to upgrade any of it down the road. I’m plagued by eARC switching issues in both rooms and I’m starting to think it’s the LG OLED’s that are the issue as they are the switching device common to both rooms. Sources are identical cable box, ATV 4K first gen and Nvidia Shield Pro. Switching issues have only gotten worse with the latest LG update, especially on the CX model. My C9 switches reliably but drops the video for about five seconds randomly. Makes me mental as I suspect it would you too.
First, thank you for recognizing the need for us, in whichever way we can, to be a positive. I also live in Texas and am a healthcare provider. The last 12 months, and definitely the last 10 days, have had me questioning the integrity and humanity…well,… I should leave it at: Thank You! Second, I am an idiot so can you tell me where is the link, again? Third, the price point for me depends on the longevity/durability of the component and how it is future adaptability. My Integra prepro is now over 12 yo and is the bottle-neck to my system (7.1), but working flawlessly otherwise. Sources and TV (eARC) are all 4K, but relying on TV to upscale. I was willing to go up to 4, and if given a great argument, even 5000 (Rotel, Anthem) if anything can blend into my system as well as the integra did in term of reliability, ease of use, low/no maintenance, and performance for 5-7 years. My hearing is definitely not as uh…refined as it was so 2 channels listening is not as important. So under 1500 and checking off almost al the box (only if it’s a prepro with balanced outputs) is almost perfect? Hopefully, the 2 Sunfire amps and the Thiel speakers will hold out another few years until I downsize my residence. One question, how is the built quality? Old school?
I think Andrew and Kristi deliver some of the best reviews on anything that can be reviewed. So clean, classy and well articulated. You are fantastic! Thank you
Love watching your reviews and I love hearing Kristi’s take! It’s really refreshing hearing two takes in one vid. I also really like the conversational back and forth between you two during her part.
@@KristiWright Indeed, super clear, well articulated, but since some of us are non native speakers, can you clarify what did you say around min 23 or so; " "..I prefer yamaha sound over just about anything, and we are talking about receivers, specially, I really like that, so I thought the onkyo was great and definitely, no one like the onkyo sound better than what I've heard from Denon, at least, so far.." THANKS; Super review Guys, I'm just about to pull the trigger on the Denon 4700 (just one unit arrived to our country today!)
Just upgraded from the Marantz NR1711 to Onkyo RZ50. This receiver is BEAST!! Best receiver l have ever owned. Watching movies on 5.1.2 (height speakers), takes it to the next level. This review convinced me to go this route. It was worth every penny. Will have for many years. Thanks Andrew!!!!
Am looking to change from NR1711 as well , hoping sound quality improves especially at lower volumes , running Polk R200's 5.2.2, nice to hear apples to apples
I have a marantz 6013 , thinking of getting rz50 or marantz 50... so hard to pick. What do you guys think ? I have left, center ,right plus 2 upfiring atmos speakers
I bought this based on your reviews. I bought it for a third of of the others I was looking at. I am powering Focal Chor 826D and the whole Chora line with a svs PB1000 Pro sub . I bought the focals on clearance and the SVS on sale . I have the Eversolo A6 for streaming . I bought all this based on your wonderful reviews. I like how you break down how you get minuscule degrees of performance improvements with spending more cash . For a everyday working person like me you have majorly influenced my purchases .I am so happy . So pleased with what you guys have opened the door for me to find these products . Some I would have never seen if not for your channel. Thank you
Have you tried playing youtube videos from a PC via the HDMI connections on the RZ50? I'm having to send mine back because the videos start then 4 seconds later the sound kicks in. If I pause then restart the video I get the same delay before the sound starts. Curious if this is a widespread issue or if I just got a bad one. If everybody else is having the same issue I'll give up on ordering another one from a different source.
1 month of ownership i can confirm this review to be spot on. We streamed the tomorrow war dolby atmos codec and was blown away running a 9.2.2 system. JbL studio series with 2 klipsch 12 subs. Dirac once dialed in really did the job in my rec room. I can't see it getting too much better at home without breaking the bank on some super high end gear.
When speaking to diminishing returns, I can't personally answer due to budget. I love that you two addressed this specifically, and imagine that 1500 is near my limit for an AVR barring a dream build or big budget home theater.
@@superpeca it actually is pretty cheap if you consider it’s functionality. Decent receiver is easily $600, good streamer, $500, decent two channel, $550, stand alone Dirac $500. This is actually the cheapest thing I may have ever reviewed for what you get. The most affordable NAD with Dirac is a lot more.
@@cheapaudioman I know, I just don't want you to forget your roots once gear starts going your way that is waaaaay more expensive. For example Holo May is a bargain DAC at 4000 USD compared to other high end DACs but it's still a f-ing 4k dac... Just keep up the good work and don't forget us budget audiophiles...
I have the Rz50 and cinema 50. Cinema 50 blogs music out of the water but the Rz50 is very impressive with all balanced vintage sound. I’m still impressed with my Rz50. My Rz50 is better than my 3800H denon.
I have been waiting WEEKS for you to review this receiver after the hint was dropped. It was literally killing me to wait for this review. I'm glad this confirmed what i was hoping for.
Nice comprehensive review. I especially like you and Kristi's summation. In 1989 I had an Onkyo Integra TX890, excellent beast of a 2 channel receiver. Wood side panels, built like a tank. Many years later it would not power up, it was a relay issue. I regret not fixing it. Very powerful and musical. Thanks for the review.
Over the past 6 months, while in the desert with the military I've watched your videos countless times which led me to purchasing the RZ50 as well as an Emotiva BassX A7 (albeit 9 month used) for my 7.1.4 home theater. I can't wait to get back in the states to take them for a spin. You and Kristi are awesome for providing the professional, honest reviews I've come to admire. Thank you and keep 'em coming.
Bought this receiver because of this review, listened this review 50 times at least and compared with x3800h and cinema 50 for the price and even just perform wise I think it's incredibly good
Wow ... I've been considering upgrading my old Denon X1000, so I came to your channel to watch your review of the 3800, which lead me to this video for the Onkyo RZ50, and I am sold! I've had a few Denon receivers over the years, and although not disappointed, I've been wanting to experience a more high end sound, but without breaking the bank. I enjoy mostly listening to stereo CDs, but also multichannel SACDs, DVD-A, Bluray Audio, and concerts on Bluray, and even some old vinyl, so I think this Onkyo will tick all the boxes and put a huge smile on my face! Thank you for the wonderful review 😊
I took the wife's advice here. AND on the Klipsch 8000f II .... I love both of these. Glad she was able to add her point of view!! I too would highly recommend. 😊
Thank you both for speaking up for those that need their stories shouted from the roof tops. One of the many reasons I love and continue to love this channel. Every video is like two good friends coming over for drinks and talking about life. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
You guys just became 2 of my favorite people in the whole world. As a mid enthusiast you're reviews are stellar. And you 2 are a great balance and duo. But you just brought it to a new level and touched my heart with your charity comments and efforts. And especially you're solidarity with the women in TX. For you to put yourselves out there shows compassion, principal, authenticity, and courage. I've been donating a lot lately, but I'm putting yours top of my cue. Once you have "that" link. And manufactures, if your reading. I do purchase based on their recommendations. About to pre-order that Onkyo RZ50. So align yourselves and consult with Andrew AND Kristi. They are 100 x 360!!!
I was planning on spending more than this on a receiver/amplifier, but decided against trying to go for top $$$ gear just to eke out that last few percent of performance. The glowing review from Andrew and Kristi has given me the confidence to take the plunge with this receiver. I used your affiliate link to make my purchase and hope that small contribution helps both of you and keeps the channel healthy. Keep it up!
This is one TH-cam Channel/Pair that I really like. These guys are so professional, so knowledgeable and so entertaining to watch. I want to build my home theater system based on their recommendations, I wish I had the money to hire them.
Recently discovered the channel and I am very impressed with the delivery and honesty in your reviews. I would love to hear your thoughts on the RZ50 vs the NR7100
Last year I was trying to get my hands on the pioneer elite 504 but I missed the window of opportunity to purchase it and it went out of stock on Best Buy. Then I emailed pioneer and they said they 505 replaced the 504. Both the pioneer elite 505 and the Onkyo RZ 50 were both out of stock. Recently the pioneer elite 505 went back in stock on Best Buy and today the RZ 50 went back in stock and I am pleased to report that I successfully placed my order. Picking it up next Thursday, June 16. Thank you Andrew for helping me make my final decision for my 9.2 receiver for my home theater! Great job you do!
I was an Onkyo fan 10+ years ago. My last Onkyo ($1800) was having different issues from missing a channel to not powering on, I made 2 trips to the store on same day for an exchange. After going through 2 Onkyo AVR I gave up on them. After watching this review gave me hope that Onkyo is on the right path again.
I purchased the RZ-50 earlier this year based upon your recommendation and have been having mixed results with the quality of the Dirac room correction. I recently took another deep dive into the manual and was surprised to learn that for over half of the listening modes, "The speaker calibrations measured with Dirac Live are disabled." This includes pure audio and most of the music related listening modes. Not sure why Onkyo disables Dirac for listening to music, but it certainly restricts how the unit fits into my system.

Love how you guys stand by your beliefs never be sorry for your moral compass. Btw preordered this unit on 8/11 and feel assured of my decision. Your review might cause them to have to increase price because of the chip shortage ; ) !
Andrew Robinson has, in what I believe, the best audiophile reviews. The content and production value are excellent. I do believe that for most audio enthusiasts that the $1500 mark would be the endpoint for most people. Obviously, if you can afford much higher than that, well then you can buy your own theater for god's sake. ;-) I am thinking of getting this receiver but I am wondering if it will play nice with my XBR-65X900H television. This television was promised by Sony to have full HDMI 2.1 capabilities but people have been having issues with eARC and 4K 120hz blurriness. Is it possible Andrew somewhere down the line if you could give your instruction on how to go about setting up Dirac or doing a manual set-up with an SPL meter and so forth?
Thank you for the great information! As a result of your recommendation, I purchased the Onkyo TX RZ-50 and have it hooked up with Klipsch Cornwall's as my L/R and Klipsch RC 64 center. My wife and I listened to a lot of music last night (Valentine's Day) and it sounded great! I also have a turntable, subwoofers, and surrounds to add to improve our system, and I anticipate the Onkyo will continue to wow us. Thanks!
Love the review. I’ve been an Onkyo supporter since 92 and so excited for the future of the brand. Going from almost being gone completely to this amazing model is amazing.
After many months of searching and much gnashing of teeth, I finally pulled the trigger and bought the RZ 50 using your Crutchfield link. Thank you for all the great content. I learn something from every Andrew Robinson video I watch and I watch just about all of them.
@@shawnwacek6791, it's a GREAT receiver. I'm using mine for stereo music listening and home theater. It has plenty of power and, unlike similar Marantz receivers, a lot of inputs. The sound is excellent. And with built-in Dirac, nothing else comes close at this price point. I would suggest ordering from Crutchfield. They have very good support and it's the same price as Amazon. Use the link above to throw a bone to Andrew and Kristi.

Thanks Andrew & Kristi for the review. Though the review is about 2 years old it's still a great choice, and on sale (black Friday?) for $1199. Pulled the trigger today and happy I can use Zones 2 & 3.
thanks for this review Andrew, it helped me a lot I just ordered one for $999.00 on Amazon today 4-30-2024 waiting and excited it will be my first home theater system that I built along with some Klipsch RP-600M II R and L speakers and Center channel Klipsch 504 II to get started
What are your thoughts on purchasing this receiver today in 2023. Really need to upgrade but it's kind of 2 years old tech. Are there better receivers in this price range today?
Today’s question is a good one. I think Andrew summed it up pretty well. As someone who hasn’t used many audio products I’m a strong believer in getting what you pay for. To me, diminishing returns happens when I don’t use something enough or to it’s full utility. For example, I wouldn’t buy an AVR just for just stereo speakers, I would at least want a 5.1.2 set up if I could.
After seeing this video some time ago, this receiver was on my radar for a while. I finally bought one last week open box for $620 from a reputable vendor. I have a Klipsch setup to go with it so I'm very excited to upgrade to this from my old Sony receiver. More power, extra channels and Dirac are what I'm most looking forward too. Thanks for this awesome review.
First and foremost, you guys are freakin’ rocking it with content, quality and presentation. By far, the best audio video reviews…period! My beloved 7.1Ch Denon AVR-5800 from 2001 has finally gone into Protect Mode. This was by far my favorite AVR to date, taking high-end separates into account. Originally, I thought about purchasing some higher end separates but now after watching your review I am convinced that the RZ50 will make fine replacement. To be honest, the last 10 years I was only using my 5800 as an amp while letting my old OPPO BDP-95 do all the processing. It worked remarkably well with Sonus Faber Concertinos and a Martin Logan Descent sub. Even at $1599, this Onkyo makes perfect sense as most solid Pre-Amps are at least 2-3 times it’s price, and that’s money better spent on a solid Amp (Parasound A52+). Which I plan on getting. Thanks to your wholehearted and unbiased review style I found a replacement for my Denon. BTW, I took the casing off of the 5800 and was blown away by the build quality and it’s massive toroidal transformer. My goal is it’s full resurrection and implementation elsewhere.
It's good to see Onkyo still in there pitching when it was looking so bleak for it last year. I'm still quite fond of my venerable Integra DTC 9.8 mutichannel digital preamp that still anchors my video system. (Yeah, Kristi, I'm "that guy" who also runs a dedicated analog preamp for music.) The Integra isn't the latest and greatest for video specs, it only outputs 7.1 channels and it doesn't do Atmos. But it sounds spectacular for what was mid-fi pricing back in the day. It also does a nifty audio-only trick you won't find too many places - it accepts raw, multichannel DSD through its HDMI inputs and decodes the stream onboard. Anyhow, I have a soft spot for Onkyo and hope they continue their comeback.
My RZ50 arrives tomorrow from Crutchfield. I've watched this review 6 times... Still seems the best upgrade from my 1080p setup as I work to move to 4k / Atmos. Do wish the sub outputs were independent - but the whole package is too attractive... that, and there's a $300 price break which pushed me to buy.
I hesitated to reply - as my excitement has been soured after receiving mine. I have now (thanks to Crutchfield) tried TWO different RZ50’s and while there is a lot of good to say about it - I think I’m out. I have 3 sources plugged into my RZ50 evaluation setup: XBOX One / Apple TV 4K / Comcast-Xfinity cable box - all via HDMI. My TV is 1080p currently so I’m not pushing 4K. When I switch between the 3 inputs - I have to turn the receiver OFF every, single time. It appears the signals don’t “latch” and only turning it off and on again solves the issue. It works great if I never switch inputs. Going from cable TV to any other input - I see a picture and hear sound for a second - then the screen goes black - and no sound. Turn it off and back on again - and everything works. I’ve updated my cables to “certified” hi res HDMI. I’ve updated the firmware. I’ve replaced the entire thing once - and the 2nd one does the same thing. I’m pretty disappointed. It sounds GREAT - and my experience using DIRAC with it has been phenomenal. It really is a superior room correction solution (until something better comes along). The video switching issue is a HUGE bummer. It’s taken hours of my life in frustration. I watched Andrew’s review so many times and did so much online research - then the recent price break I snapped one up. Crutchfield was great about replacing it - but now I have to return TWO and I have no alternate yet - and have to go back to the research drawing board. And/or try to engage Onkyo tech support. I’d consider myself - a lifetime gear head / audio and videophile - quite tech savvy. It’s very unlikely user error. If HDMI cables are THAT sensitive that I MUST spend a thousand dollars per input - I’m out. If anyone else (or Andrew) had or has had this experience and can help - I’m all ears. Switching video inputs is a BASIC function that just does not work. It’s POSSIBLE I’ve gotten 2 faulty units - but really? Frustrated and 50-less. Sorry Onkyo. I’m out. Super bummed.
Hi Stephen, I've read your comment about the issues you are having the Onkyo and I believe the fault may lie with your television. Because it is limited to 1080p, I'm guessing it is an older TV which means it may HDMI versions 1, 1.2, 1.4 but doubtful that it has 2.0 or 2.1. If my hunch is correct and your TV is using an older spec of HDMI, this could be causing the handshake issues. I say this because I literrally have the RZ50 hooked up in my own system right now with a PS5 and an Apple TV 4K and while the switching isn't instant it has always worked. So I really think it might be your TV. Another thing you may want to check is make sure the RZ50's HDMI's output settings are 4K standard and nothing higher. Additionally, if your TV does not have CEC controls, you need to make sure those are turned OFF inside the RZ50 as this could be causing some confusion as well. If your TV has CEC, make sure it is turned on and do the same for the Onkyo. But my gut says it's not your Onkyo.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Andrew - thanks so much for the reply. I held that same potential theory as I was writing. I've now lived with the R50 for a week and through a weekend. I have 2 listening / viewing rooms in my home - the RZ50 was purchased as the "start of" my walk up in the basement room (the big room) from 1080p to 4k. The plan was to update my AVR, then get a new AV cabinet - and finally a new 75" 4k TV. The thinking was I could replace a component at a time and walk up to my final updated system. I did fear as I'd read about HDMI being "delicate" that I might bump into something like this. I think you've confirmed it and I'm now at peace with the RZ50 and my plan to update the rest of the gear. Also - I want to also say - that aside from the HDMI switching issue - I couldn't be happier with how it sounds and the experience of "using it". The menus are thoughtful and easy to navigate - the physical remote is fine (oh, how we'd all love backlit remotes - always - but...) and easy to use. The remote App is the best I've seen. Internal streaming options like TuneIn Radio and Tidal are fantastic - especially when used with the App. DIRAC - wow. I mean - WOW. It IS finicky about room noise while setting up - but certainly not in a "flawed" way - and the sonic results are truly enjoyable to listen to. 2 channel listening is REALLY enjoyable - and I do like how the 2-channel = 2.1 as the subwoofer is engaged in 2 channel mode. There is A LOT to like about it. Thanks to Crutchfield for helping me with the swap - (I'm now wondering if I should keep them both - one for each of my rooms) LOL. My hedge bet is that you're right, Andrew- and getting a new TV solves this annoying issue. It's just money, right? Finally - as a lifetime audiophile and gear head - my wife has been very patient with me along the way. YOUR videos however, she'll watch happily along with me - which I cannot emphasize enough how amazing this is. GREAT production value, great reviews and great channel. You're building bridges! Thanks again for the reply - the internet rabbit hole is a wild and chaotic place filled with people commenting without hands-on experience - so forums can be frustrating to weed the crazy out of the useful. And - Crutchfield can thank you - as the TV and media console are next! See you on the innter-webs!
After your review, I bought this AV receiver on Crutchfield, I pair it with a set of Klipsch 5.1.2 speakers on Costco, so far I'm still getting used to it , and the sound is great .
FYI: For anyone looking for one of these during this time of shortages. I picked up the Brother of the TX-RZ50 which is the Integra DRX-3.4 (slightly less power, and is not nearly as good looking as the ONKYO- but seems to be the same exact product- ) For those whom like physical buttons will love the Integra!
I snagged an Onkyo TX-RZ50 today from Best Buy and got $140 off and am so stoked for it to arrive! It was literally back out of stock 5 minutes after I placed the order. Thanks for your reviews, I watched many of them when trying to decide on which receiver to buy.
I check BB every now and then, maybe even yesterday. Never in stock. I keep checking for an open box deal, that would be more in my budget. Still not sure I really need the RZ50 vs NR7100.
Some of the best, thoughtful reviews on the internet. I'd love for you to get your hands on an Anthem MRX 740/1140 for comparison to the NAD T778 and Rotel 1580...
Thanks for the review, I'd be curious to see how this compares to the new Yamaha AVENTAGE coming out in a month. And in my opinion I think diminishing returns start to kick in at the $800 mark for home theater use, but for two channel musical listening I think once you get above the $1500 mark for AV receivers you are really splitting hairs.
Thank you for setting me straight on the difference between subwoofer .1 and .2. This RZ50 looks like a possible candidate for a high end audio system without going through the aggravation and space hogging of separates.
Glad to finally see some information on this receiver after almost nothing since its announcement 6 months ago. If someone were disappointed by the lack of the second sub out having its own channel instead of them both being the same. Would something like a miniDSP 2X4HD also using Dirac be enough to push this receiver to actual greatness?
Hi Andrew, ordered mine in January and finally got it in June. I wholeheartedly agree with your review. Sold my Anthem and like this receiver so much better. Dirac is really good! Please consider doing a basic Dirac video if you have time in your busy schedule? Love your videos!
I just got one and the dac for music listening is far better than my denon 4300, soundstage is great, not super hires detail but plenty of detail The theater presentation is great Still has a few bugs in software so soft reset often
Very worth it, bought one a few months ago. Have had no issues, sound is phenomenal in pure mode 2 chan and atmos. Dirac is great. Hi Res music files sound incredible. No software issues. Did update immediately upon turning it on.
I went Yamaha 5.1, Then Onkyo 7.2, Onkyo RZ710 for 5.1.2 Atmos, Got an incredible deal at the time to get my current Marantz SR6012 9/11.1. I have liked them all and Glad to see a strong showing from Onkyo driving competition! Price point depends on the product and time. Receivers at the moment I would say $1500ish
so its 2023 and I think I am ordering a TX-RZ50. Modest speaker setup 5.1 channel and this receiver is still relevant enough for years to come I think. Great review.
onkyo with it Dirac integration into their AVR really is a game changer, where a lot of consumer can enjoy a quality avr with still reasonable price. kudos to onkyo and not to forget pioneer

@MrSteveCasper I have not tried that specific sequence. I am however having other issues with mine. But I want to attribute my issues to mine being a refurb. that's what I tell myself to keep from being sad
I needed this review. Long time Onkyo receiver owner and I was considering Yamaha but was hoping Onkyo would do something like this. So I will use your link to buy this gem. P.S. I'm a 27 year A.V. super enthusiast, and I absolutely love your videos Andrew. They are always thorough in every respect needed. And I love Kristy's take on things for a females perspective. And as a great husband (my wife would agree), I like seeing how you look at your wife while she reviews, you clearly know what you're doing in that department as well. Thank you always!
I received my TX RZ50 last week, and like any receiver etc I needed to play with it, the DIRAC is crazy good, much better than the Odyssey-from Denon, I initially bought the x3700H, not completely satisfied with its performance for the money. I was amphless waiting for the RZ50, nothing available, I purchased an Emotiva XPA-5, hooked up to a Marantz 7705, great set up but pricey… don’t get me wrong I loved them both, but I really wanted less and out of no where Amazon had the RZ 50 available… bingo, I ordered the RZ 50, honestly I am so stoked on its performance I’m still smiling from ear to ear… DIRAC calibrated my speakers to sound incredible! I tweaked the levels to match the calibration and it’s a killer sound for hi-fi and theater. I’m running a 5.1 system… I just wanted to thank you for the awesome review, you nailed it…
@@harryjohnson6255 Is this with just the RZ50 on its own or with the Emotiva power amp also? I have an older Flagship Onkyo 5009 which ive loved but its starting to have some issues, so ive ordered an RZ50 but a bit concerned on its own it will have enough power to go with my M&K 150s in a 5.1 set up🙂👍
I just bought the RZ50 as a secondary receiver for my basement recently. Nice impression. ( don't know all the ins and outs yet) Only got two Polk audio Tower speakers + a center and two rears + sub. The sound is very impressive. but. a month ago I bought a Yamaha RX-A6A, which is just about identical to the RX-A8A. with a different price tag. with all due respect to Andrew and Kristi who do an awesome job. Prices have come down dramatically in the last 2-3 months. and while I only paid $1299 for the RZ50. you get a lot for this receiver for its price point. nothing can beat it. But. if you"er an audioholic like me. then you need to hear the Yamaha RX-A6A. it's a game-changer. It's currently about $1000 more than the RZ50. especially if you own 4-6 Ohm speakers. while the RZ50 will probably is suitable for most. the Yamaha is in a totally different league. if you have high-end speakers and a good listening area with proper acoustics. then you will immediately notice the difference between a high-end receiver and a good bang for your $ receiver. I can say the Yamaha RXA6A is on par with the Denon a110 amp. there is no magic here. you get what you pay for. it all depends on your budget and if you're looking for top end audio. the RZ50 is a bargain right now at $1299.

Andrew, can the RZ50 disconnect the amps when using preamp outs like the Denons? Also have you ever heard/reviewed the TX RZ810? I have that AVR and the sound quality is excellent.
I've been happy with my old Onkyo NR696, but it's time to upgrade. Of course you are my go to for information, and this just sealed the deal. Thanks professor!
I was in the market for a receiver, as I just moved into a house that will have a dedicated theater room. Coming from an amazing 2 channel PeachTree Nova 220SE, I needed something with a good balance of features, audio quality and room correction. Boy did your review come at the prefect time. Just got my Onkyo in today and I'm looking forward to seeing what is potential is. Thanks for all the helpful reviews
Set up my Dirac yesterday on my RZ50, way better than I had hoped..fantastic. Down loaded on my iPad, easy setup.

I HAVE ONE BEING SHIPPED AS YOU SPEAK THANKS FOR THE REVEIW I HOPE IT IS ALL IT IS MADE OUT TO BE. IT HAS BEEN AWHILE SINCE I SPENT MONEY ON A RECEIVER SINCE 1979 THANKS AGAIN I LIKE YOUR REVIEWS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
The key question I take away from this review is.... Given the strong praise for for the TX-RZ50 and the significant improvement in performance compared to the TX-NR5100.... is the TX-NR7100 more like the RZ50 or NR5100 (and the NR7100 will be getting Dirac and Dirac Live), as well? Great review Andrew and Kristi!
Hey Andrew! New to the channel here and I love your content!! I’m wondering if it’s still worth going for the Onkyo RZ 50 or should I consider going either with the RZ 30? I was able to find the 50 for $850 and it seemed like a steal after watching your video…however this video is 3 years old at this point 😏 let me know what you think or let me know if you have any other recommendations at this price point. Thank man! Keep up the good work 🙌🏼
Would like to know when this will be avalible in the UK. Planning to buy this along with the Klipsch rp8000 and the centre, well, if they ever get stock back in. It was your review that sold me on the klipsch speakers, now the onkyo amp.
I had the 7100 for a few days. Earc port was a nightmare. Sent it back. Got the yamaha a4a avantage. Hated it. Remote is terrible, screen was tiny, not user friendly at all compared to onkyo. Sent it back. Just ordered the rz50. I know it may or may not have problems with it's earc port. It's been reported more than a few times. But I'm willing to give it a shot. I loved everything about the 7100. Simple to set up and use. But the arc problem was pretty bad.
Can’t wait until you get your hands on the “cousin” to this Onkyo, the Pioneer Elite - VSX-LX505. Always preferred Pioneer to Onkyo so if it’s as good as this one, it’ll be installed in my living room ASAP.
Looks good, glad to see Onkyo still alive. I had an integra for years and years (pre HDMI days) and was happy with it. Seems like the natural comparison is with the Yamaha RX-A4A (same price), although if the onkyo sound is similar to yamaha nowadays (as opposed to the noticeably different presentation of marantz and denons), it may just come down to the features and room correction preference. Onkyo seems to have a winner (at least at this price point).
I think for AVRs it all comes down to preference as they have to be competitive in terms of features and price at every turn for consumers to pay attention to one over the other. That said, the RZ is special IMHO.
I have been excited about the potential for the RZ50 since reading about its coming launch. When Kristi dropped the hint of better of things to come during the 5100 review I have been anxiously awaiting your take. Sound like it is exactly what I have been looking and waiting for. Preordering today. Thank you both for all the work you do.
Andrew! Have you considered reviewing the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505 A/V receiver? It's nearly identical to the Onkyo TX-RZ50 in everyway and is in stock according to Pioneer's website.. For just $100.00 more over the Onkyo TX-RZ50, the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505 would be a great alternative for those who don't want to wait around, not knowing when the Onkyo TX-RZ50 will be in stock again.. In the meantime, I'd be very interested in your opinions and feedback.
Andrew, first, let me say, I've really enjoyed watching and learning from your video's, they are done really well!! Second, I am finally getting my dream system together, and after seeing this review, as soon as it is available, I will be buying the RZ50! I also just purchased a Monolith 12" THX Ultra subwoofer, so my question to you is, what surround speakers would you recommend to pair with those? 90% of the time we use the system to watch movies, and I'm hoping to stay under $1000 bucks for all 7 speakers. (including 2 in atmos in the ceiling)
And maybe worth knowing Onkyo went insolvent and this is a restart in AV receivers...I personally own a Denon avr-3311 ci the damn thing is 12 years old by now and still works flawlessly..I also was considering Onkyo back in the day just because they were somewhat cheaper..Yeah until i started reading about units failing (HDMI boards and overheating)...i decided to go with the brand reliabillity of Denon and never looked back..My next avr will also be a Denon
Even though this video is over 1yr old, I still trust you and your wife's opinions, so I purchased the rz50 to replace the Onkyo tx-rz830 I've been rocking. Hope the Dirac processing works. I have a miniDSP HD running my 4 subwoofers (six18's total 😅)
Andrew and Kristi, thank you both for the excellent reviews you have produced. Having both your prespectives is really valuable. I have a favor to ask when reviewing AV receivers. Could you please also test it as a "AV processor" using the pre-amp outs into an outboard amp for at least the front 2 channels. The reason I ask is, In your review of the RZ50 you if I remember correctly you mentioned the sound stage and imagining wasn't quite as wide and deep as some of the best amps you have tested and there was some tiny lack of detail and clarity. I am wondering if that is a result of the amps and power supply in the receiver not being able to drive the speakers as well as they could be driven. If the processor and pre-amp section are excellent and the speakers just needs an amp with some gusto to get back that sound stage, imaging, clarity and detail then the addition of an outboard amp could be a cost effective future upgrade. For example matching the RZ50 with AudioLab 6000 for the front two channels could potentially bring back the sound stage, imaging, details and clarity and the combo of the RZ50 and the Audiolab 6000 would be cheaper than the Yamaha A8A. Thanks for your consideration.
Man, I’m thrilled that Onkyo is back! As a classic AV Onkyo receiver owner (XV51 Pro II), I’m definitely paying attention. I’m not a surround guy. My system is only 3.1 and certainly music focused. Does Onkyo offer a receiver that is more tailored for music with “basic” A/V features? Cuz if they, do…my wife is freaking right now lol.
@@msoles30 that makes 3 of us. This AVR has everything I am looking for but like you had two Onkyo's in the best die on me and also went Yamaha it has been infinite reliable. Scared to buy the brand again
That’s about how much i paid in the usa as well. Sucks. But from what I’ve gathered it’s still about the best one in this price range. I’m upgrading from a Sony STRDH790. So this better blow me away. Lol.
Good to hear about this product. I am an Onkyo fan and hope they make it. I currently use three Onkyo products, 2-CD Players, and one AVR (in my audio room). I love them all. I run a Marantz SR7013 in the home theater. Love it. The TXRZ50 seems like a great product that will work well for most people. I think you nailed the diminishing return line.
Ugh, I saw this coming. Onkyo recently increased it's price by $200. It's now $1599.99 USD at any authorized retail store including Onkyo's own US Online Store. :(
Great review. I would say that $1500 to $1800 is about the limit for me on the AVR. Does the TX-RZ50 runs hot during the review? My ageing and dying 7.2ch Onkyo can be hot at times. How would you rate the TX-RZ50 against the Yamaha RX-A6A or even the previous gen A3080 if you discount the HDMI 2.1 disadvantage?
I’ve had my TXRZ50 for 3 days now and that’s was a concern of mine. I haven’t owned an Onkyo since I was a kid and have been reading they can run extremely hot. I currently have 5 channels bypassed using Emotiva XPA5 and have it sitting directly on top of my amp for the time being. It hasn’t as much gotten warm. I have zone 2 hooked directly to receiver and just kept zone 2 on and playing to see how much if any difference and it didn’t. I will be eventually moving it off my floor into new cabinets as soon as I have them built so I will be adding 2 AC Infinity Aircom’s for more air movement.
I bought this Onkyo to replace my Denon 4520ci that was hit by lightning. I can tell you this technology is light years beyond Audysey and the app is much more user friendly. Side note: it sounds AWESOME!!
Man you both got me wanting to sell my denon s960h receiver for this onkyo... 🙄 I wish I would have waited.. it is out of my budget but I could have just kept saving.. great review 👏🏽

I’m not sure. I’ve never had the cash to push the outer limits so my response is coloured by my budget but if this thing is under $2,000 CDN, then I’d say that’s about my point of no return. That was my price point for my Q950A system so around $2,000 for just an amp is my upper limit.
@@SeanVedell Appreciate you answering the QOTD. $2K for just an amp is about my upper limit too.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Is this Class AB? or Class D? This is a very important item you forgot to mention.
Thank you
You are very kind to say that. Thank you.
😍😍😍😍
I wouldn't buy a receiver without also seeing a review from Audioholics, but yes, Andrew does a great job!
@@larrylebeck4854You won’t regret it, I guarantee! Enjoy🍻
I have a marantz 6013 , thinking of getting rz50 or marantz 50... so hard to pick. What do you guys think ? I have left, center ,right plus 2 upfiring atmos speakers
It's a good receiver, unless you want 4 height channels then it's trash.
This channel really found its mojo and is making the most honest hi-fi content that I can find in YT. Just a pleasure to watch.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
This thing sounds amazing. Dirac, streamer, preamp outs... this could be end game for myself personally. I need one. Brilliant review
Thanks for watching, Randy.
But it ain't cheap! :) Don't become moderatelyexpensiveaudioman , stay true !
Insert extreme eye roll here
@@superpeca it actually is pretty cheap if you consider it’s functionality.
The Cin 50 is also 2.5 X the cost. You failed to mention that little tidbit.
Everybody should have a RZ50, Cinema 50 and an X3800H. I mean, why not?
I have been waiting WEEKS for you to review this receiver after the hint was dropped. It was literally killing me to wait for this review. I'm glad this confirmed what i was hoping for.
Appreciate you watching! So, is this going to be the one for you?
Nice comprehensive review. I especially like you and Kristi's summation. In 1989 I had an Onkyo Integra TX890, excellent beast of a 2 channel receiver. Wood side panels, built like a tank. Many years later it would not power up, it was a relay issue. I regret not fixing it. Very powerful and musical. Thanks for the review.
It arrives in Sweden during January 2023. Just about to place an order. Your review provided the information I needed to make a decision. Thank you!
Onkyo finally getting some respect and attention again. I love it
Thanks Kristi for mentioning it. I donated a bunch to PP and legal groups this week. I hope you find a great house in CA.
Thank you John, we appreciate you watching and while deployed nonetheless, thank you for that and THANK YOU for your service!
Always loved Onkyo. Had a 696 in the ‘00’s. Hats off to the bigger message (s).

Thank you so much! You should see a donate button below or next to this video.
Keep it up!
Evan, it does help! Kristi and I both really appreciate it. We hope you enjoy it!
Do you by chance know if Onkyo recent bankruptcy affect future service/warranty?
Well finally pulled the trigger on the RZ-50 on your and other reviews but I think yours was the one I trusted the most. Love your reviews.
Have you tried playing youtube videos from a PC via the HDMI connections on the RZ50? I'm having to send mine back because the videos start then 4 seconds later the sound kicks in. I was an Onkyo fan a couple/few decades ago. I still have the Integra A-8700 in my basement system. Good to see them back!
Love how you guys stand by your beliefs never be sorry for your moral compass. Btw preordered this unit on 8/11 and feel assured of my decision. Your review might cause them to have to increase price because of the chip shortage ; ) !
Thank you Kristi and Andrew for helping us find some awesome home AV solutions!
Beautiful video, as always! 😊
Glad the review is helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Could you please share where you were able to purchase the Onkyo TX RZ-50?
It is $960 refurbished from Onkyo with Warranty! Insane deal! Still an amazing value even now.
Love the review. I’ve been an Onkyo supporter since 92 and so excited for the future of the brand. Going from almost being gone completely to this amazing model is amazing.
Well. I may be wrong, but I rarely see Andrew and Kristy enthusiastic on a product as this Onkyo. This looks like a "must buy".
After many months of searching and much gnashing of teeth, I finally pulled the trigger and bought the RZ 50 using your Crutchfield link. Thank you for all the great content. I learn something from every Andrew Robinson video I watch and I watch just about all of them.
How is the receiver ? it's on Amazon right now for $1,199 for Onkyo TX-RZ50 ? PURCHASING AT THIS PRICE ?
@@shawnwacek6791, it's a GREAT receiver. I'm using mine for stereo music listening and home theater. It has plenty of power and, unlike similar Marantz receivers, a lot of inputs. The sound is excellent. And with built-in Dirac, nothing else comes close at this price point.
I would suggest ordering from Crutchfield. They have very good support and it's the same price as Amazon. Use the link above to throw a bone to Andrew and Kristi.

Same question
@@jacksonranch Thank you let's bump the thread so he can see it hopefully =)
Same question I have.
Good news for everyone in Europe, Sharp announced that Onkyo, Pioneer and Integra are coming back to Europe this autumn through their distributors 🎉
Congrats. Have u used the preamp section?
@@Zimmy_1981 Unfortunately, FedEx destroyed it. When I opened the box the foam was in a billion pieces and the RZ was very banged up
I wanted to thank you Andrew for this video and your channel in general. I am pretty convinced this is the receiver I will buy next, thank you!
Glad I could help.
You two are definitely a Class Act!! Thank you so much for what you do. It's really appreciated.
☺️
Mr Beck tell us about your experience with the RZ50 wish u could show pic,, let us know???
Where is the DRX-3.4 available to purchase at?
I snagged an Onkyo TX-RZ50 today from Best Buy and got $140 off and am so stoked for it to arrive! It was literally back out of stock 5 minutes after I placed the order. Thanks for your reviews, I watched many of them when trying to decide on which receiver to buy.
I check BB every now and then, maybe even yesterday. Never in stock. I keep checking for an open box deal, that would be more in my budget. Still not sure I really need the RZ50 vs NR7100.
Retailers we recommend: bit.ly/3n2lTje, bit.ly/3k1gqs8
Some of the best, thoughtful reviews on the internet. I'd love for you to get your hands on an Anthem MRX 740/1140 for comparison to the NAD T778 and Rotel 1580...
The way you both give your review / opinion in your own way ( nerdy / not ) is what makes this channel special. Thanks for the great content
Much appreciated!
I have questions. How are you satisfied with RZ50 today? Is it still worth it in 2023? What about music in stereo mode (phono), is it ok?
I just got one and the dac for music listening is far better than my denon 4300, soundstage is great, not super hires detail but plenty of detail
The theater presentation is great
Still has a few bugs in software so soft reset often
Very worth it, bought one a few months ago. Have had no issues, sound is phenomenal in pure mode 2 chan and atmos. Dirac is great. Hi Res music files sound incredible. No software issues. Did update immediately upon turning it on.
@@ericgardner5548 fantastic, thanks for the response
Can I run 5.1.4 with no extra amps using rz50 for 5.1
I went Yamaha 5.1, Then Onkyo 7.2, Onkyo RZ710 for 5.1.2 Atmos, Got an incredible deal at the time to get my current Marantz SR6012 9/11.1.
D A I'll be getting one also, and I've owned Yamaha receivers for 35 years...
onkyo with it Dirac integration into their AVR really is a game changer, where a lot of consumer can enjoy a quality avr with still reasonable price. kudos to onkyo and not to forget pioneer
Woohoo!! Only 2 years late but I am expecting delivery of my RZ50 TODAY!!!! so excited
Hope you enjoy it!
@MrSteveCasper I have not tried that specific sequence. I am however having other issues with mine. But I want to attribute my issues to mine being a refurb. that's what I tell myself to keep from being sad
@robinsonbrand not as much as I hoped unfortunately
I needed this review. Long time Onkyo receiver owner and I was considering Yamaha but was hoping Onkyo would do something like this. So I will use your link to buy this gem. P.S. I'm a 27 year A.V. super enthusiast, and I absolutely love your videos Andrew. They are always thorough in every respect needed. And I love Kristy's take on things for a females perspective. And as a great husband (my wife would agree), I like seeing how you look at your wife while she reviews, you clearly know what you're doing in that department as well. Thank you always!
Thank you for watching.

I’m running a 5.1 system… I just wanted to thank you for the awesome review, you nailed it…
When did Amazon have the RZ50 in stock? I been checking for weeks and it's never available.
@@fredwerza3478 June 15 is when I ordered the Amph… crutchfield had in stock for 15 minutes… I checked Amazon and they had 2 available… I was “Lucky”…
Is The onkyo rz-50 is better than your marantz 7705??
The 7705 is in a different class, it is an amazing preamplifier.. different set up.. home theater recovers the RZ50 is excellent
Have you tried playing youtube videos from a PC via the HDMI connections on the RZ50? I'm having to send mine back because the videos start then 4 seconds later the sound kicks in.
I still have my NR696.
Been waiting for the Yamaha A6A, this review makes me want to look at this Onkyo…. Thanks…
I was wondering the same thing.
3 months later and still no answer anywhere on the internet to in my opinion the most important question about Onkyos newest receivers
Great review! I had just recently ordered the Onkyo TX-NR7100, but after watching this review, I'm now going to upgrade to the TX-RZ50. Thank you.
I have had several Onkyo receivers… Each sounded good until their HDMI boards went south; I hope they have addressed this!
Can’t wait until you get your hands on the “cousin” to this Onkyo, the Pioneer Elite - VSX-LX505. Always preferred Pioneer to Onkyo so if it’s as good as this one, it’ll be installed in my living room ASAP.
Kristi - don't ever feel that you have to apologize for bringing up what's happening here in Texas.
October 2 is our day ❤
Thank you, Christine. I wish we didn't have to keep marching but if that is what it takes, we will be there.
What I saw in this video was a really good review and really great people. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for tuning in! I hope you're as pleased with it as we have been. I know Kristi and I have really enjoyed our time with the RZ50.
I agree. Both are calm, professional, and the quality is among the best.. While free, I cringe watching so many channels.
Do yourself a favour and buy a comparable Denon or Marantz...Maybe pay a little more and have a receiver you can enjoy for moren then 2 years..
Onkyo TX-NR7100 vs. Onkyo TX-RZ50 is it worth the $400 extra bucks? Specs are very similar.
Andrew!! I just picked up the Onkyo RZ50, it's a beast!! Thanks for ur review!!!
Enjoy it!
Had an Onkyo that burned out on me many years ago, was as hot as a frying pan, even off. Have those issues been fixed? Went Yamaha and had no regrets.
Want to know the same thing
@@msoles30 that makes 3 of us. This AVR has everything I am looking for but like you had two Onkyo's in the best die on me and also went Yamaha it has been infinite reliable. Scared to buy the brand again
I had to pre order mine no question about it after watching this video. I am a long time Onkyo fan tho so this is just the icing on the cake
I finally ordered the rz-50. Took me a long time, since the price in Denmark is 1772$ 😱🤬🤢 but, i want it. Thanks for the review. Regards jannick 🇩🇰

Well I pre-ordered it today! Their telling me mid March to April delivery. You’re review made my mind up!
Good choice!
That's a shame.
I am really considering the Onkyo TX-RZ50... or who knows... the 70!
I value your opinion. What are the best budget speakers to pair with the rz50
Great value! Really want to see how this compares to the Anthem MRX 540 or 740.
