Thank you for this video! I had no idea! It's really not mentioned by Onkyo. I have the RZ-30 in for review, and one of the design goals is causing me a bit of havoc. You can't use the OSD (On Screen Display) on 4K TVs, using the MAIN - ARC HDMI port, so you have to switch to the non ARC port (SUB) for the OSD to work. The MAIN is designed for 8K only, while the secondary SUB port is 4K & 8K, so the OSD works via that port only. Having a way to program the AVR from my computer via this trick and interface, means that I don't have to rely on the SUB port and lose ARC compatilibty. I can just work from my laptop. Very, very cool! Thanks! Now, if I could just figure out the implications of the different options...
Been watching this AVR for awhile but finally made the jump when this deal came out. At $1999 its well beyond anything else on the market at that price.
Thank you Gene for posting detailed videos about this Onkyo receiver a couple of weeks ago, here in Perth Western Australia it was on sale at West Coast HiFI stores for $3,748 normally $5,000 , it’s replacing my Onkyo TX-NR708. I am redoing my home theatre room, I wish I Knew, what I know now about 24 years ago when I had my home built, I included a dedicated room for home theatre, I would have gone 500 millimeters larger, and added stud walls to soundproof it, we build double brick exterior and single brick interior walls, I went with 2.5 metre high ceilings, which is 30 courses of brick, instead of the standard 28 courses. Thank you again, I’ve watched a lot of your videos and learn’t some interesting information. Take care, Gary 😊
Please always change the passwords, the receiver might not be interesting in itself, but it might have access to other devices on your network, enabling a hacker to use it as a proxy. The proxy can then be used to attack other things in your network, which eventually might result in access to your computer for example.
I bought the Integra drx8.4 and wow. I'm coming from an Anthem avm70 and an Arcam av41. Never thought I would keep the Integra over the Arcam. The best part about this receiver is the way it got my sub integrating with my speakers. Don't know what Integra is doing in the bass management but the sub disappears in the room. The highs are clean and airy and that's what I was missing on the Arcam. The Anthem had a few issues that were annoying and its wasn't as dynamic as the Arcam. But the integra is and there so many pluses. The built in amp is great if setting up speakers as small 80hz plus. You can bi-amp the front left, right and center channel!! The fans keep the amp cool and never hear them. Movies sound a bit more cinematic. The web ui is well thought-out and great for setting up the unit. But you also have the onscreen display, cmon. I'm impressed. Thanks for convincing me.
I switched from Denon to the RZ50 two years ago. Still a huge Denon fan, but the value was tough to beat making the jump to ATMOS. I run it as a processor (though I don't believe I have the preamp only mode in the RZ50). As you say Gene, I wish it was a 6 channel atmos platform. I was nervous jumping from Denon, but I have been surprised. With current pricing, huge value prop.
@@tomhermann6558 Yeah I just got the RZ50 and at $999 on Amazon it’s the best bang for my buck. I’m running the Emotiva XPA DR3 for my front stage but had to use my old Denon to run rear surrounds in order to have rear height speakers connected to the internal amp channels on the Onkyo RZ50. Just seeing if it’s worth the $1k jump in cost to get into the RZ70.
+1 on the wishlist to remove zones in favor of more processing channels and adding manual PEQ. Would also love the ability to select other speaker options beyond Klipsch (I'm using Polk). Thanks for the great video, Gene!
I use Zones in my Hobby room and workshop but found it very annoying that the crossover in zone 1 applies to zone 2. My zone 1 had a sub woofer and zone 2 had nothing. Ended up dityching the sub woofer and going to buy 8inch in ceiling speakers to get better bass. Only using SR494 but im sure my RZ50 at the time had the same issue. Would I be able to use this to set my speaker set up? Due to my room set up I have to have speakers just go up the wall, over my head, and down the back wall. I don’t have side surrounds. So how would I configure that It would be 2 front towers, few feet about that on wall are two in wall speakers Then 4 ceiling speakers And then 2 in wall speakers behind me

Can someone tell me if the Onkyos behave the same way as other AVRs, such as the Denons, when it comes to sound modes and the way they behave with certain codecs? I just set up a Denon x2800 as a former diehard Onkyo fan, and I can't get my head around the way I have to switch sound modes via the remote with every disc I play (if I watch a disc that doesn't make the Denon drop back to the last mode used). I can't stand how you have to switch to a different correct mode for every new piece of content; but is this just the way the new AVRs work now because of the Dolby Surround and DTS Neural upmixers? I'm used to my old Onkyo 605 using Pro Logic II for two channel signals while auto switching for all appropriate surround modes....do the new Onkyos behave this way via the remote as well?
Hi , I purchased the rz70 and ran into a weird situation . My front speakers are focal 1028be sub is REL t7x and center plus surround are Martin Logan. Out of the box the stereo mode sounds terrible on the fronts ( very thin , trebley and completely lacking of the front base … after dirac room correction it’s much better but still not great. Today I tried the other modes and was shocked how great the “ pure sound “ mode sounds like! Suddenly the front speakers are well balanced and have insane base without the sub .. I am puzzled- any idea why stereo mode sounds so bad ??
Have both, running external amplification in both cases. I would say it depends on how much control you need over your subwoofers. Do you need separate sub outs? Do you want Dirac Live Bass control? If the answer is yes to those two questions then get the 70, if not you may be better off with the 50, depending on the amps you use externally.
Gene...about that preamp mode. I'm looking for it in the manual and can't find it. I was wondering if selecting front only turns off the front L/R or is it L/C/R? Would be nice if you could do L/C/R for people that want equal power across the front 3 channels. Otherwise you're stuck with only having a 2 ch for front L/R or needing to externally amplify all your channels if you turn the preouts off. Its probably splitting hairs on whether you'll hear a difference if you leave the preamps all on or turn off the ones needed by still would be nice to have individual control.
Is there a way to just use the internal amps for only the height channels? I have a 7 channel external amp and only need the internals for the .4. This is a deal breaker if not. If preamp mode is set to 2 channel, does that disable every other pre out?
With regard to Speaker Virtualizer - does this affect the Dolby Surround upmixer when both are engaged in a 5.1 system and you play a non-Atmos track? I only have a 5.1 setup with surround speakers in the ceiling above us, but I don't want the upmixers to mess with the normal 5.1 tracks on discs, yet from what I'm told, the upmixers don't engage - even though they light up on the front of the AVR - when it's a 5.1 system, because there's really nothing to "upmix" to. Does My Input Volume actually work like other input level adjustment systems, where you can "boost" or "cut" the input trim, like a power amp's input level control?
Gene, Great review and demo. I had one quick question: Do you know of a site that has all of the previous firmware files for the RZ70? I am reluctant in doing any updates without having a previous firmware file. Thank You

Comparing the Onkyo TX-RZ70 with Yamaha A6A/A8A, the Yamaha has "Surround AI" which seems to override standard Atmos processing when enabled. Assuming my understanding is correct, does the Onkyo have anything equivalent to "Surround AI" and, if not, is it losing anything as a result. VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION! IF I have a amplifier hooked up to my three fronts let's say two fronts are SVS Towers Tower speakers that can handle 200 Watts how can I get 200 Watts to those speakers when the Onkyo only puts out 140 per Channel 2-channel driven thanks.PLEASE HELP !!!!!
You don't need to match power ratings of a speaker with output power of your amplifier. The Onkyo will deliver 170 watts/ch 2CH driven at 8 ohms and close to 300 watts @ 4ohms which the SVS towers are. You've got plenty of power to drive them well.

If you're going to troll a channel to get your 2 seconds of fame, at least do some basic research first 🤔 before you say something that isn't accurate or really doesn't contribute anything informative to the conversation. If you are so triggered on the price of this product, then buy something that's more in your budget. Wow, what a concept 👏 unless you do it to just crave attention from anyone?
